A single dose of the vaccine is insufficient to return to normality | Q COSTA RICA

QCOSTARICA -Since Friday, July 16, Costa Rica has been under a massive vaccination campaign against Covid-19, when the Caja Costarricense de Seguro Social (CCSS) embarked on an intensive mission: vaccinate hundreds of thousands of people against COVID-19, in a matter of 10 days, with 500,000 doses of the Pfizer / Biontech vaccines donated by the US government.

Laura Masís, from Aguacaliente de Cartago, stood in line from 3:00 am to get the vaccine from her. She should come back in 12 weeks for the second. She was administered by Carmen Calvo Molina. Photo: Rafael Pacheco Granados

For hours thousands have people from the 40 to 57 years age group without risk factors have lined up on the streets, in parks, shopping centers, hospitals and clinics to get the jab.

This group is part of the last group that would have to wait possibly for several months more to get vaccinated if it were not for the generous donation of vaccines by the United States that arrived in Costa Rica on Wednesday night.

These same will have to make line again in 12 weeks to get their second dose.

However, experts are concerned that many may feel, that now that they have been vaccinated, life can get back to “normal”.

But that is not entirely the case. With the first dose, the action on the immune system to generate a response against SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes the disease) has already begun. The work to build the protection is in progress, but people must “seal” that work, in 12 weeks, with the second dose.

And after that, one has to wait about two weeks for the body to generate enough antibodies to prevent you from getting seriously ill with Covid-19.

“People enter the ICU (Intensive Care Unit) every day who only have one dose. Do not trust yourself, only the complete scheme guarantees you the best result,” summarized intensive care physician Leonardo Chacón Prado.

Why are there two-dose schedules?

Pharmacist Santiago Rodríguez, spokesperson for the College of Pharmacists (Colegio de Farmacéuticos), points out that the number of doses depends on something called the mechanism of action of the vaccine, the way in which it was manufactured and motivates the production of antibodies.

“One-dose vaccines, like Johnson & Johnson’s, have a different mechanism of action and with one dose they give the person what they need, with Pfizer and AstraZeneca both are required,” he said.

For epidemiologist Juan José Romero, in the two-dose schedules, each one fulfills a function.

“With the first dose there is an awakening, with the second, a ‘sociolón’ is attached to the first response so that there are more antibodies and more defense cells that generate antibodies,” said Romero.

What happens if I don’t get the second dose?

“If we are left with just one dose, we wake up the immune system, but we leave it ready for a second dose. If we find the virus, the system could be stimulated, but not at a sufficient level,” explained Romero.

“If we stay only with the first (dose of the) vaccine, we have some protection, yes, but we are playing with chance, so we must go for the second dose when it is our turn. It is raising our window of advantage,” added the specialist.

Virologist Eugenia Corrales Aguilar, who has studied this virus since the beginning, comments: “a single dose is not a final or complete layer. The vaccine is wonderful and very good, better than we expected, but it is not the only thing. It is a process”.

Rodríguez adds: “a cap of antibodies is needed for the body to defend itself, this is not necessarily achieved with a single dose. It helps me a lot, but it doesn’t protect me at all”.

Taking care

How should people protect themselves in the period between doses? The message remains the same: maintain distancing, use a good mask and prefer open spaces, good ventilation and prefer (where possible) teleworking.

This rigorous care must be maintained for at least two weeks after the second dose, so that the body has generated a more complete response.

Romero sums it up: “think like they haven’t vaccinated me.”

“When you get the vaccine today, it is not immediate, I am not automatically immunized. My body must process the information and activate it. And only one dose does not reach the maximum of that protection,” stressed Corrales.

The schedule is considered complete 15 days after the second dose.

And, even after that time has passed, take care.

“The vaccine must be accompanied, not left alone,” said Romero.

Corrales agrees: “vaccination is not complete, absolute, or immediate protection. They are layers of protection, the vaccine is just one layer. Avoid crowds, avoid closed spaces ”.

Rodríguez adds: “the care before, between doses and after are the same. We cannot rely on not using preventive measures. The vaccine will defend me from not hitting me so violently, but the other measures lower the risk that it won’t hit me.

“In addition, there are many unvaccinated people, those under 40, but also those under 12, who until now have no vaccines for them. In consideration of them, we must continue with the measures”.

Rodríguez affirms: “the vaccine may prevent me from getting seriously sick, but it could still infect someone who has not been vaccinated and that person could get complicated.”

The World Health Organization (WHO) has posted on Twitter a reminded message that “even after getting vaccinated against #COVID19, keep taking precautions to protect yourself, family and friends”.

Turlock Police honor those in department who shined in 2020 – Turlock Journal

The Turlock Police Department took a small step towards returning to normalcy on Thursday by hosting an outdoor and distanced awards presentation to honor those employees and volunteers who performed outstandingly in a very abnormal year.

The department typically holds an indoors awards breakfast early in the year, but when it became apparent it wasn’t going to happen this year, they adapted to an outdoor afternoon presentation.

“It is important for us to recognize those that have earned recognition, so we decided to move it outside,” said Acting Turlock Police Chief Steven Williams.

Each year the police department honors the volunteer, employee and officer of the year. They also present an award of excellence to an individual or a unit and present any special citations and medals for those individuals who have gone beyond their regular duties in service to the community.

The department awarded the Medal of Meritorious Service to three detectives for their actions that helped save the life of Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Deputy Caleb Collins, who was critically injured in a traffic collision on June 25, 2020.

Detectives Gina Giovacchini, Tim Redd and Jason Tosta were all headed separately to the police department to start their shift when they saw a vehicle make an illegal turn and strike Collins, who was on a motorcycle and working traffic duty at the time.

“Without hesitation, these detectives immediately began assisting the deputy who had obvious signs of serious physical trauma from the impact,” Williams said.

The collision happened at W. Main Street and Tully Road during busy morning traffic.

“While attending to the deputy’s medical condition, traffic was heavy due to the morning commute and there was no way to move the deputy nor could they leave him; therefore, the detectives were exposed to traffic and vulnerable to being injured themselves,” Williams said. “While rendering aid to the deputy, it was clear his airway was blocked. With no advanced medical equipment, the detectives assisted with clearing his airway and stabilizing his neck. They continued to monitor his pulse and ensure he was breathing until the paramedics arrived. The paramedic from American Medical Response said the actions of the detectives saved the deputy’s life.

“Detective Giovacchini’s, Detective Tim Redd’s and Detective Jason Tosta’s actions exemplify going above and beyond the call of duty and demonstrated Turlock Police Department’s Mission Statement of, ‘As Police Professionals, We Commit Ourselves to Public Safety, Service, and Excellence,'” Williams said. “Their actions are not only an example of their commitment to the community but also to their fellow law enforcement comrades. These detectives acted courageously and brought honor to themselves and to the Turlock Police Department.”

“Thank you for your swift and heroic actions — it’s the reason I’m standing here today,” Collins told the detectives at the presentation. “I will be eternally grateful.”

“I feel blessed to have been in that position, to happen to be there where we could help,” Tosta said. “It was truly a team effort.”

“I just want to say that I am glad you’re okay,” Giovacchini said to Collins. “That was the most important thing to me, so to hear that you’re back to full duty is great.”

“I would like to acknowledge that Detective Frank Navarro was there as well and had it not been for him running over and stopping the driver, who ended up being an impaired driver, he probably would not be facing some type of prosecution,” Redd said.

The Volunteer of the Year award went to George Plisko, who Williams described as being vital this past year to helping with the issuance of police permits.

police awards 6
George Plisko was selected as the Volunteer of the Year.

“This was a much-needed assistance and George picked it up quickly,” Williams said.

The Employee of the Year award was presented to Erika Grace, who also earned a special commendation from the department.

Grace was hired as a crime prevention specialist, but just as she started her position, all the outreach efforts were suspended because of COVID-19 restrictions.

police awards 7
Erika Grace was named the Employee of the Year and earned a Special Commendation.

“Erika came back to us this year and was challenged by having to completely redesign all of the Crime Prevention programs to meet COVID requirements,” Williams said. “That, on top of having all her VIPS unable to help due to COVID. Erika took it in stride and hit the ground running with organizing our current programs, so we would be ready to go once the time came to get back to business as usual.”

One program Grace was intent on saving was the Blue Santa program, which earned her the special commendation. Due to budgetary constraints in 2019, the Blue Santa program had to be suspended and with the COVID-19 pandemic it didn’t appear it would be able to return in 2020.

“Erika organized the Blue Santa Program in a way that was safe, efficient, and fiscally responsible,” Williams said. “With the hard work of Erika and coordination with numerous Turlock Police Department employees who volunteered to help, Blue Santa was a great success. Many families and over one hundred children were provided with much needed joy this holiday season.”

Sgt. Michael Parmley was selected by his colleagues as the Officer of the Year. Parmley is in charge of the department’s professional standards and serves as the department’s spokesperson.

police awards 8
Sgt. Michael Parmley was named the Officer of the Year.

“Sgt. Parmley works so hard on a daily basis,” Williams said. “He is always focused on his tasks but is always helpful and patient if he’s pulled in a different direction at a moment’s notice.”

The Excellence Award was presented to the Records Unit for the extra effort they put in while short staffed and pulling together during a change in records technology.

“Records took on several new responsibilities that required new processes and procedures,” Williams said. “They developed new systems that are the example for the county. Despite staffing and workload and deadline stressors, everyone in Records stayed positive and kind. Every customer was treated like their request was the only thing that mattered.”

police awards 4
The Records Unit was selected by the police department to receive the annual Excellence Award.

The Records Unit consists of Lilia Franco, Kelly Hines, Vanessa Bravo, Chandra Hopson, Janya Younan, Bianca Shields, Jeannette Del Toro, Stephanie Paiz, Megan Tuggle, Madelyn Dixon and Wilbur Marshal.

The system change also earned Distinguished Service Medals for Senior Records Technician Vanessa Bravo, Records Supervisor Lilia Franco and Dispatcher Supervisor Marivel Rodriguez.

“Over a year ago, the Turlock Police Department embarked on an enormous project of changing providers of our Computer Aided Dispatch and Records Management System,” Williams said. “Building the system before the “go-live” date consumed the lives of several employees. After the system went live, hundreds of issues kept those same employees working long hours and days off.”

police awards 2
Senior Records Technician Vanessa Bravo, Dispatcher Supervisor Marivel Rodriguez, and Records Supervisor Lilia Franco were preented with Distinguished Service Medals.

Business Unit Supervisor Amanda Fortado also was presented with a Distinguished Service Medal for her work on implementing a new payroll and scheduling system at the department.

“Amanda taught herself on how to use the system and configured it to the best she could to serve our needs,” Williams said. “We discovered it was not intended for a police department with our obscure 24/7 schedules, but Amanda found a way to make it work. Once she figured it out, she made several videos and easy-to-follow written instructions so staff could use the system with or without Amanda here. The training documents will be used for a long time, fulfilling the succession planning desire.”

police awards 3
Business Unit Supervisor Amanda Fortado was awarded a Distinguished Service Medal.

Capt. Miguel Pacheco, who served as the Acting Police Chief for the first for months after former police chief Nino Amirfar’s departure, was awarded a special commendation for shepherding the department through the pandemic and civil unrest.

“Along with being the Acting Chief at the time, Capt. Pacheco maintained his involvement in the Field Operations Division and was very hands on,” Williams said. “While overseeing planning and giving clear direction, he allowed his staff to facilitate operations. His leadership and support guided the Turlock Police Department through exceptionally chaotic times. Under his command, Turlock Police Department staff suffered no injuries at protests, maintained a positive public image, and kept pandemic infections isolated to individuals staff members taking all precautions to guard against mass outbreaks within the department.”

police awards 5
Capt. Miguel Pacheco was presented with a Special Commendation for his work over the previous year.

Relief funds to ‘supersize’ NM well plugging – Albuquerque Journal

Copyright © 2022 Albuquerque Journal

For Randy Pacheco, the CEO of A-Plus Well Service out of Farmington, starting to plug an old oil or natural gas well is like stepping into an abandoned house – you never know what you’re going to find.

“Every well is unique,” Pacheco said. “You can get one that’s very, very easy to plug and the one right next to it could be complicated because the casing is rotted out or it’s falling apart.”

New Mexico is set to receive unprecedented funding to clean up abandoned oil and gas wells.

A bill signed by Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham in December allocates $3.5 million in federal relief funds for orphaned and inactive wells.

The recently passed federal infrastructure law also sets aside $4.7 billion for orphaned wells, including an initial $25 million allocation for New Mexico.

Adrienne Sandoval, New Mexico’s Oil Conservation Division director, said operators plug the majority of wells that are no longer productive.

But the state plugs about 50 wells a year, at an average cost of about $54,000 a well last year.

“We’re basically going to be able to supersize the program,” Sandoval said. “We’ve already got pluggers on contract, we’ve already got remediation contractors on contract, so we’re really ready to go once that money comes in.”

The OCD estimates there are 1,741 abandoned oil and gas wells on state and private lands in New Mexico.

Well data for federal land in New Mexico was not immediately available from the state Bureau of Land Management office.

The BLM estimates there are more than 130,000 orphaned wells in the U.S.

Taxes on oil and gas operators fund the state program.

New Mexico contracts with local companies to plug wells if operators go bankrupt or if a well owner cannot be found.

OCD will also use the influx of money to hire more inspectors, engineers, environmental specialists and lawyers for the program.

“In the past we haven’t been able to do as much reclamation work, (because) it can be really costly,” Sandoval said. “So this is I think going to give us an opportunity to do that work as well as the well plugging.”

The Interior Department is expected to notify New Mexico soon as to how much grant funding the state is eligible for besides the initial $25 million.

Companies fill old wells with cement from the production zone to the surface to prevent gas or oil from seeping into the water or air.

Pacheco said the funding boost could help support New Mexico’s economy by “bringing in the next generation” of oil and gas reclamation workers.

“We have a real opportunity to clean some stuff up,” he said. “I think if BLM and the state get the right people in place, build teams and build the vision, then 10 years from now we won’t look back and not have anything to show for it.”

Theresa Davis is a Report for America corps member covering water and the environment for the Albuquerque Journal.

DeWalt PowerStack Battery and Technology Review

DeWalt PowerStack lithium-polymer pouches

Designed with stacked pouch battery cells instead of cylindrical cells, DeWalt PowerStack 20V Max batteries make some huge changes. DeWalt claims PowerStack batteries and technology provide more power with less weight and size. They give the case in point with their debut model, the DeWalt DCBP034 PowerStack 1.7Ah battery.

This might be the biggest announcement made since DeWalt Tool Connect came online. DeWalt also seems to be the first major power tool brand to use pouch cell batteries in the construction industry.

UPDATE: DeWalt PowerStack Vs DeWalt 2.0Ah Battery Tested

We were able to test the DeWalt PowerStack battery against the standard 20V Max 2.0Ah battery and the results were telling.

We started with the DCF850 impact driver setting 8-inch GRK Fasteners RSS screws into stacked OSB. We also tested a 5.0Ah battery to see how it compares. Here are the results:

20V Max PowerStack 20V Max 2.0Ah 20V Max 5.0Ah
Test 1 11.43 sec 15.46 sec 10.28 sec
Test 2 11.62 sec 16.24 sec 10.22 sec
Test 3 13.19 sec 11.42 sec 9.28 sec
Test 4 9.75 sec 11.70 sec 10.14 sec
Test 5 10.14sec 12.22 sec 10.69 sec
Average 11.23 sec 13.41 sec 10.12 sec

Clearly, PowerStack has an advantage in this test. It’s not quite as strong as the much larger 5.0Ah battery, though. We decided to take it a step further and shifted to the DCD797 compact hammer drill with a 3/4-inch auger bit in double-stacked 2×4 studs.

In high speed, the PowerStack battery did just fine, averaging 2.25 seconds. The 2.0Ah battery was only able to complete one hole in high speed and failed on the other four. That’s a solid result in itself, but we flipped the drill into low gear just to see what time differences there were.

20V Max PowerStack 20V Max 2.0Ah
Test 1 4.68 sec 5.16 sec
Test 2 4.57 sec 5.44 sec
Test 3 4.61 sec 5.35 sec
Test 4 4.51 sec 5.11 sec
Test 5 4.59 sec 4.91 sec
Average 4.59 sec 5.19 sec

If there was any doubt remaining, this final test sealed the deal. You clearly get better performance from a DeWalt PowerStack battery than the standard 2.0Ah compact pack. You give up a little capacity. But then again, you get the work done quicker, which may very well even out the runtime.

DeWalt PowerStack Technology Overview

The big deal behind DeWalt PowerStack batteries is the use of stacked lithium-ion polymer pouches instead of cylindrical cells. While current 20V Max batteries use either 18650 or 21700 cells, PowerStack uses a literal “stack” of 5 lithium-polymer pouches.

DeWalt PowerStack battery vs compact 20V pack

When using stacking technology, you gain the advantages of less internal resistance, longer life, and better utilization of internal space.

18650 cells vs pouch batteries

That means you can make the packs smaller with the same amount of power output. This high energy density, of course, also lets you choose to occupy the same space while providing even more power. Because you have the potential for greater energy density and more life cycles, stacked cell batteries offer a lot of hard-to-ignore advantages.

DeWalt powerstack pouch battery

Bold Claims

According to DeWalt, their 1.7Ah DCBP034 Powerstack battery provides 50% more power than their 2.0Ah DCB203 in a 25% more compact housing. DeWalt also claims 2X the charge cycles compared to the 18650 cell-based DCB203 compact 20V Max battery.

DeWalt PowerStack Technology

More power, more compact, and more charge cycles? You can bet we’ll see a lot more stacked cell batteries in the near future.

DeWalt PowerStack DCBP034 vs DCB203 Compact Battery Specs

When comparing the 20V Max DeWalt PowerStack DCB034 vs the DCB203 Compact battery we want to look at weight, size, and capacity. Here’s what we know:

DCBP034 DCB203
Capacity (Ah) 1.7 Ah 2.0 Ah
Capacity (Wh) 30.6 Wh 36 Wh
Length 4.1 in. 4.625 in.
Width 2.5 in. 2.95 in.
Height 1.7 in. 1.875 in
Weight 0.7 lbs. 0.8 lbs.
Charge Cycles (estimated) 1000 500
Price TBD $99

The first thing we noted was the apparently lower Ah and Wh rating of the pack. What has us perplexed is how a 1.7Ah pack is “50% more powerful” than a 2.0Ah pack. We’ll have to learn more about how these numbers translate into real-world results after we get our hands on some of these new DeWalt PowerStack batteries.

DeWalt PowerStack lithium-ion pouch cells

Size Does Matter

The real big deal—aside from energy output—has to be the size. These new packs offer a lot more power density, which means you get more power in less space. The specs above form some of the total picture. Perhaps these photos can help show the key difference in both length and width:

  • DeWalt DCB203
  • DeWalt DCBP034 PowerStack
  • DCB203 2.0Ah pack
  • DCBP034 1.7Ah pack

DeWalt PowerStack Battery Pricing and Availability

Fortunately, DeWalt gave us pricing on the new PowerStack battery pack as well as some available configurations. For now, DeWalt has three options for their new batteries with PowerStack technology:

  • DCBP034 Compact Battery – $119
  • DCBP034C Compact Battery Starter Kit with DCB112 Charger – $149
  • DCBP034-2 (2-pack) – $179

The DeWalt PowerStack 20V Max Compact Battery (DCBP034) begins rolling out in North America starting December 1, 2021. DeWalt then plans to continue its global debut of the technology through Spring of 2022. Look for DeWalt PowerStack batteries to arrive as a parallel premium option alongside existing 20V compact batteries.

Final Thoughts

DeWalt couched their comments to specs when talking about power, citing “not in application” when talking about power. We really look forward to understanding how stacked polymer “pouch” style batteries fare in real-world testing. From what we’ve experienced so far, these packs should put out more power while saving on bulk and weight.

The limiting factor does indeed appear to be runtime. When DeWalt manages to release packs with larger amp-hours remains to be seen—that will take the power and add additional runtime.

Traditionally, pouch cell batteries tend to swell with gas during charge and discharge cycles (with as much as a 10% increase in volume). Hopefully, the engineering behind DeWalt PowerStack batteries accommodates or solves this expansion and contraction issue.

The increased number of charge cycles really impresses us. That can’t be overstated as it means your packs last longer—and that translates into real savings.
