US-Venezuela relations and the need for a real solidarity movement – Venezuelan Voices

As the new US government starts shifting away from some of Trump’s domestic and foreign policies, there is the enigma of what path it will follow regarding Venezuela. Trump’s policy was totally disastrous for the Venezuelan people. It was a policy of interference and economic aggression that aggravated the brutal crisis already suffered by the Venezuelan people as a consequence of decades of plundering policies by the Chávez and Maduro governments. Maduro launched a monstrous attack on the wages, union liberties and living conditions of the Venezuelan masses as early as 2013.

In addition to financial and oil sanctions established in 2017 and 2019, and the encouraging of a military coup since 2019, Trump also propped up the fiction of the Guaido interim government, facilitating its corrupt operations. Trump also stole substantial assets and funds from the Venezuelan State, using part of these -approximately US$ 600 million- for the xenophobic border wall with Mexico.

Of course for Trump, the suffering of the Venezuelan people was completely irrelevant to his policy decisions. Taking into account the long history of US official support for dictatorial client regimes in Latin America and the world, to this very day still valid in places like Egypt, Honduras and Haiti, the claims about worries for democracy in Venezuela are not to be taken seriously. Yet the fact is that, putting aside the complete lack of legitimacy for Trump’s stated goals in Venezuela, far from weakening the Chavista civil-military regime, his policy actually helped consolidate it and gave it the alibi of the “blockade” to blame on external factors the hunger and misery that millions of Venezuelans suffer under Maduro.

Trump not only inflated the corrupt and right-wing opposition sector. Also through Giuliani and other operators, corrupt negotiations with the Bolibourgeoisie that must be investigated took place, together with Trump’s real estate deals with members of the Chavista regime involved in money laundering of corrupt money.

Biden has not outlined a clear policy regarding Venezuela, but the record of the Democratic Party is terrible when it comes to interventionism in Latin America, from the invasion of the Dominican Republic in 1965 to the coup in Honduras in 2009 with Obama’s support.

Upon assuming the presidency, Biden has given continuity to the policy of maintaining a puppet “interim government” represented by Guaido. He did not announce any change regarding the oil and financial sanctions. So far, continuity is given to important elements of Trump’s policy, although there’s a symbolic gesture in the license issued on February 2 by the Office of Foreign Assets Control making minor changes to some of the sanctions related to Venezuelan port and airport activities. Maduro, who invested heavily in the US lobby industry during Trump’s government, will probably continue to pursue normalization, offering massive privatizations as an opportunity for US companies.

As the struggles against racism and police brutality, for women’s rights and workers’ strikes contributed to Trump’s defeat, we, as Venezuelan left opposition activists, want to engage in discussions and raise awareness in the US left and social movements about the need to fight for a halt in US aggressions against the Venezuelan people, while developing at the same time true solidarity with those who struggle for the rights of workers, women, indigenous peoples and peasants in Venezuela.

The Venezuelan people have the right to free themselves from Maduro’s oppressive rule, exercising the right of self-determination. There is nothing to be gained from imperialist interference, as it has been demonstrated, but solidarity between peoples is crucial.

Through popular denunciation and mobilization, pressure can be exerted to reverse oil and financial sanctions, prevent the confiscation or sale of Venezuelan state assets such as Citgo, and for official recognition of the illegal diversion of Venezuelan money for Trump’s wall. Also, to demand the release of all Venezuelan immigrants trapped in ICE concentration camps, as part of the struggle for the release of all detained immigrants and the closure of that infamous institution.

US oil companies use semi-slave labor in Venezuela; for example Chevron, Schlumberger and Halliburton have paid wages of less than $0.50 a day to their Venezuelan workers. It is very important to advocate for the end of this collusion between big US oil companies and the Venezuelan regime to abuse Venezuelan quasi-free labor, taking advantage of the repressive climate in the country.

DSA and other organizations of the left and the labor movement have the responsibility to speak out and demand an end to the sanctions, while also demonstrating true solidarity with those struggling against extreme misery and Maduro’s state terrorism.

The social and economic disaster has made Venezuela’s the second largest forced migration in the world after Syria in the last decade, with more than 5 million people displaced abroad. Many more survive in dire conditions inside the country. The only options are not either supporting imperialist intervention or supporting Maduro’s cynical, corrupt and repressive government, as it is often presented by most of the anti-war and left movements now, under a “solidarity with Venezuela” rhetoric.

It’s urgent to build a genuine solidarity movement.

Ghost Stories Surrounding the Creepiest Places in New Orleans

New Orleans is a city full of history… and ghost stories, too. From eerie hotels that only the brave can survive a night in, to the creepier than normal cemeteries, New Orleans is home to some spooky tales.

Back in 2017, Travelers Today even dubbed New Orleans one of the most haunted cities in the world. Yes, that’s right – the world! We’ve come up with a list of the top haunted places throughout the city that are sure to give you goosebumps. Check them out below!

1. LaLaurie Mansion

The LaLaurie Mansion mansion is located in Royal Street and was once a tourist attraction but is no longer in operation. It was once owned by Madame Lalaurie, who was said to be quite vicious of a person. Her home was reported to have a high number of slave turnovers and one neighbor said that a young slave girl jumped to her death rather than face punishment from Madame LaLaurie. In 1834, a fire broke out in the mansion, and when help came to the home, they found slaves bound, tortured, whipped and kept in such horrid conditions that an angry mob attacked the place. The LaLaurie family fled New Orleans in fear of their lives after the public became outraged with them. The location is believed to be haunted, possibly with the slaves who were once kept here.

2. Arnaud’s Restaurant

Photo by Carlos Pacheco via Flickr

This fine dining restaurant features classic Creole cuisine, and is believed to be haunted by “Count” Arnaud Cazenave himself. His ghost has been known to rearrange the silverware or the bar setup to his liking. The Mardi Gras Museum at the restaurant is named after his daughter, Germaine Cazenave Wells, and her ghost is rumored to look over the festive gowns and artifacts that are housed here. She has been seen as a misty form.

3. Le Pavillon Hotel

Photo by Terence Faircloth via Flickr

There are a couple different ghosts who are said to haunt this hotel. The first is Adda (also known as Eva or Ava), a teenager who has been spotted in the lobby and main entrance with teary eyes. She was said to have been killed by a runaway carriage and her ghost is known to walk up to guests and before disappearing, she says “Pardon me, I am… very lost.” Her apparition has fair skin, brown eyes and brown hair that is pulled back. She dresses in black, flowy clothing and carries a clutch that she sometimes drops. Some witnesses say she also smells like lilacs or roses. There is also a ghostly couple from the 1920s who haunt the building. The middle-aged couple has been spotted wandering the grounds and hallways, mostly on the third and fourth floors. A ghostly man, around the age of 20, has also been seen and is said to have long hair and wear bellbottom pants. His ghost is known to play tricks on the guests and cleaning staff and may run out into the street, even being caught on security’s video surveillance. And beware – because his ghost may also peek inside your guest room from outside!

4. Lafitte’s Blacksmith Shop

This bar is a well known haunted spot in New Orleans, and rumor says Jean Lafitte himself, once the famed owner of the actual blacksmith shop, lingers here in spirit. His ghost has been spotted on the premises, and some say they have seen eyes that look very similar to Lafitte’s, watching them from the fireplace grate. A woman’s apparition has also been seen here, believed to be the ghost of famed Voodoo priestess Marie Laveau.

5. St. Louis Cemetery No. 1

Photo by Wally Gobetz via Flickr

Located on Basin Street, this cemetery is believed to be haunted, possibly because a Voodoo Priestess named Marie Laveau is buried here. Witnesses say a crow watches over her grave, and many say her spirit has inhabited the animal.

6. New Orleans Pharmacy Museum

Photo by Tess Dixon via Flickr

This historic pharmacy dates back to 1823 and is believed to be haunted by Dr. Dupas, a former owner. He was a man who reportedly conducted horrific medical experiments on pregnant slaves. He was also rumored to practice voodoo. In 1867, Dupas died after catching syphilis and his apparition has been spotted after hours dressed in his lab coat or brown suit. His ghost has been known to throw books and move items in display cases, which sets off the security system. Stories say pregnant women are especially susceptible to paranormal activity here.

7. The Beauregard-Keyes House

This home is located on Chartres Street and operates as a museum. It is a well known haunted spot in the area. Stories say Paul Munni, a crazy Chess champion once lived in the home and would run through the streets of New Orleans with an axe. Then there are others that say this story is entirely false, and that the champion’s name was actually Paul Morphy and he never ran around with an axe. Either way, no matter which story is true, this spot is believed to be quite eerie.

8. Bourbon Orleans Hotel

This hotel is rumored to be haunted by a number of spirits. There is a Confederate soldier that likes to wander the halls, as well as the ghosts of children and nuns who died during the Yellow Fever epidemic when the hotel operated as an orphanage. A ghostly dancer is known to dance alone in the hotel ballroom as well.

10. LaBranche Building

This historic building is said to be haunted by at least two different ghosts. Stories say a wealthy sugar planter Mr. LaBranche had a secret mistress named Melissa, and his wife found out after he died. It was said that Mrs. LaBranche invited Melissa over for tea, drugged her and chained her up on the third floor, starving her to death. It was said Mrs. LaBranche lived for another 15 years, with the woman’s corpse above her all those years. Both women’s ghosts are said to linger here; Melissa making restless movements on the 2nd and 3rd floors and Mrs. LaBranche has been seen on the second wearing a blue gown.

Delta Regional Authority graduates 24 from leadership institute – Talk Business & Politics

The Delta Regional Authority (DRA) graduated 24 regional leaders from the Delta Leadership Institute (DLI) Executive Academy. The 2021 DLI class marks the 16th year of DLI-trained regional leaders, composed of government, non-profit, and business professionals from all eight DRA states.

Since 2005, the DLI Executive Academy has enhanced leadership skills, policy knowledge, and networks of community members in the Mississippi River Delta and Alabama Black Belt regions. The leadership development program empowers fellows with the tools, experiences, and networks to address local and regional challenges, improve decision-making, understand policy development, and strengthen leadership capacity and mutual understanding of regional, state, and local cultures.

“Congratulations to the 2021 Delta Leadership Institute Executive Academy fellows on their graduation,” said DRA Alternate Federal Co-Chairwoman Leslie Durham. “I am proud to celebrate and honor your leadership, commitment, and perseverance this year. My challenge to each DLI graduate now is to return home and use the knowledge, training, and relationships gained from DLI to invest back into their communities.”

The graduates participated in six training sessions over the past year, learning best practices employed throughout the Delta region for economic and community development in order to catalyze innovative solutions implementable in their own community and region. DLI fellows learned from subject matter experts in infrastructure and transportation, small business and entrepreneurship, workforce development, public health, and other fields necessary to facilitate economic growth.

Patch Notes: DEAFKIDS

An electronic performance with samplers, synths, pedals and traditional South American instruments from the Brazilian noise-punk trio.

DEAFKIDS are Douglas Leal, Marcelo Dos Santos and Mariano Sarine, a three-piece from Brazil whose cross-genre experiments take influence from punk, noise and industrial sounds, combined with hypnotic polyrhythms that draw from Brazilian music.

The trio’s extensive discography spans music has appeared on legendary US independent label Neurot Recordings and on Rocket Recordings in the UK. DEAFKIDS have also collaborated with recent Fact Live guests Petbrick as DEAFBRICK, whose first album of metal and electronics was released last year. In 2019, they released a collaborative two-song EP with São Paulo duo Rakta, and last year, they appeared on the Cyberpunk 2077 soundtrack.

In this episode of Patch Notes, Fact visited the trio at a studio in São Paulo, where they set aside their guitars for an hybrid performance involving samplers, synths, pedals and drums as well as traditional South American percussion and wind instruments.

DEAFKIDS’ next release will be another collaborative release with Rakta, a live album recorded at São Paulo’s SESC Pompéia in 2019. Pre-order it here ahead of its release on May 21, and find more of DEAFKIDS’ music at Bandcamp.
