Koniku’s Scent-Detecting Device

An “iridescent purple nipple the size of a steering wheel” could be the answer to one of biotech’s trickiest problems: creating a device that successfully detects and recognizes odors. , founded and helmed by Osh Agabi, creates neurotechnology devices; one of their products is the aforementioned “purple nipple,” known as the Konikore. Within the device, living nerve cells are “suspended inside a proprietary solution designed to replicate the mucosa, the layer of membrane high up in our nasal cavities. The cells contain specific transmembrane proteins programmed to recognize odor molecules, precisely as those in our nose would catch a whiff.” The Konikore essentially signals and decodes what it smells, ultimately recognizing the specific scent. It’s already being used by the world’s biggest brewer, Anheuser-Busch InBev (owner of Budweiser, Corona, Stella Artois and others) to test drinks’ aromatics, and will soon be used in airports for bomb detection. But Koniku isn’t the only tech company exploring the olfactory world, find out more at .

Malaga, Spain’s Eye-Catching Crochet Sunshade

The sun-soaked town of Alhaurín de la Torre in the province of Malaga, Spain used plastic awnings to shade pedestrians for years until the City Council’s Department of the Environment tapped local crochet teacher Eva Pacheco, and her students, to crochet colorful sunshades from recycled materials. The stunning assemblage of shifting patterns now provides shade over roughly 500 square meters. Read more about the artistic, environmental endeavor and watch a video at .

Amsterdam’s Utrecht Central Museum Hosts “The Blind Spot” Exhibit for Visually Impaired People

Within their current exhibit, The Blind Spot, Amsterdam’s Utrecht Central Museum recreates well-known paintings with additional dimensions and sensory triggers. This is so visually impaired guests can better access and enjoy the works. For instance, the museum’s 3D version of Floris van Dyck’s “Still Life with Fruit, Nuts and Cheese” (originally from 1610) allows viewers to reach in and touch the items portrayed on the original canvas—grapes, a bread roll and cheese. Scent from the latter also contributes to the experience. Read more about the exhibition and the way it was designed at .

New Type of “Water World” Exoplanets Beyond Our Solar System

The search for exoplanets has traditionally centered on those similar to Earth (of a relatively proportionate size and mass with comparable temperatures and atmospheric compositions) but scientists are now “rethinking the kinds of planets that may be habitable” and looking toward a new class known as hycean planets. Beyond our solar system these planets, akin to “mini Neptunes,” are much bigger than Earth and are believed to be habitable—meaning the search for life elsewhere in the universe could yield results sooner rather than later. Hycean planets are “hot, ocean-covered and with hydrogen-rich atmospheres,” with temperatures reaching up to 392 degrees Fahrenheit (200 degrees Celsius) and are “basically water worlds,” says Dr Nikku Madhusudhan, the lead author on University of Cambridge’s research. Former Baldwin Park city councilmember pleads guilty to receiving nearly $38,000 in bribes

A former Baldwin Park city councilmember has pleaded guilty to accepting tens of thousands of dollars in bribes from a Baldwin Park police officer working at the FBI’s direction, in exchange for political support of the Baldwin Park Police Association’s contract with the city, the Justice Department announced.

Ricardo Pacheco, 58, pleaded guilty on June 15 to a federal bribery charge. On Tuesday, federal prosecutors unsealed documents containing criminal information against Pacheco, as well as portions of a plea agreement in which he agreed to fully cooperate in.

According to the DOJ, “the unsealed plea agreement contains a redacted statement of facts to protect the integrity of ongoing aspects of those investigations”.

The unsealed documents reveal that Pacheco admitted to soliciting and receiving a total of $37,900 in bribes from a Baldwin Park police officer from January through October 2018 to support and vote for the Police Association’s contract.

Officials say the police officer made the payments at the direction of the FBI after two officers approached the FBI and agreed to assist in its ongoing corruption investigation.

In exchange for the payments, Pacheco voted in favor of the Police Association contract in March 2018.

Documents show that payments to Pacheco included a $20,000 cash bribe in October 2018. Pacheco also solicited and received $17,900 in checks that he directed be made out to his church and sham political action committees he had set up.

As part of his plea agreement, Pacheco resigned from his City Council seat in June. He also agreed to forfeit $83,145 in cash proceeds seized by the FBI.

Pacheco was elected to the City Council in 1997 and served as mayor pro tempore in 2018.

He is scheduled to be sentenced on August 2, at which time he will face a statutory maximum sentence of 10 years in federal prison.

Carifta qualifier Jaeda Grant celebrates birthday with win at Mile Reloaded event

Jaeda Grant gave herself the perfect thirteenth birthday present last night when she qualified for the Carifta under-17s 1,500 metres after clocking a winning time of 5 minutes, 34.57 seconds in the middle school race during the Mile Reloaded event at the Flora Duffy Stadium.

Grant’s time equated to a 5:11.71 time over the 1,500 metre distance, making her the first local athlete to reach a qualifying standard for next April’s Games in Jamaica. Carifta qualification requires the younger athletes to be 14 in the competition’s calendar year.

Devon Bean, the national track and field coach, was delighted to witness Grant’s performance which comes a month before the first track and field event of the season.

“Jaeda puts in the work, I’ve watched her from a little girl and she is now in middle school,” Bean said. “She’s hungry and passionate about the sport and what you saw tonight is testament to what hard work entails.

“Was it expected for her to qualify this year, no, it caught me off guard, too, but that should tell you the time she puts in and the type of shape she is in early December. If she can hone in on that come February or March, who knows what is in store.

“She couldn’t ask for a better birthday. She has a good support system behind her, her parents and grandparents. They encourage her and obviously she likes to run.

“That time should come down even further once she gets in the grove. She didn’t run in spikes tonight!”

Grant finished a comfortable 21 seconds ahead of second placed Ava Butterfield, who clocked 5:55.48, the real battle coming for second place as Butterfield edged Arabella Newport Derbyshire (5:55.88) in the closest of finishes.

One of the closest races of the night saw Tommy Marshall, another aspiring Carifta athlete, edge Tajahri Rogers by one second to win the high school boys race in a time of 4:50.16. Rogers finished in 4:51.16 and J’auza James third in 4:59.86.

Marshall came from third place with about 100 metres to go to claim the victory.

“I was really happy with it, I just came over from the summer training for triathlon and going away to a big cycling race,” Marshall, 17, said.

“Over the cross country series I have been building up my fitness in running again, so coming into this race, I hadn’t done anything over this distance yet so I was super happy to come out with the win.

“Coming around the corner I was in third place and took the lead and going into the last sprint I was just looking forward and hoping no one would come past me.”

Marshall is looking forward to competing in his first Carifta Games, having qualified twice before.

“Once I didn’t make the cut because there were two runners quicker than me and in 2020 I made the team but then there was the Coronavirus,” he explained, now hoping it will be third time lucky.

In the men’s open race, Teddy Shum claimed first place ahead of Domico Watson in a time of 4:47.51 while Watson crossed the line in 5:06.58 and Anthony Furbert was third in 5:33.57.

“Obviously there was a few fast guys missing like Dage [Minors] and Chayce [Smith] who I train a lot with, but I was happy with it,” said Shum who returned to the island in January. “I wanted to break 4:40.

“I’ll run the Jingle Bells race on Sunday and see what happens next year. I just ran the New York Marathon a month ago. I’m going out for a pizza now to celebrate.”

Gayle Lindsay won the women’s 20-39 race in 5:33.62, while Dem Salter was the women’s senior open winner in 7:23.62.

Fenella Wightman of Bermuda High School claimed the Senior school girls (14-19) title with her time of 5:44.35, with Shayla Cann of Bermuda Pacers second in 5:55.93.

Declan Reardon took the 11-13 boys crown in a time of 5:11.96, finishing ahead of MAAC team-mates Cameron Adkins and Tom Hyland in 5:23.27 and 5:24.80.

The Primary schools boys and girls (U-10) winners were Chavi Pacheco Hill in 5:40.22 and Riana Robinson in 6:39.55.

Emerging economies spar with U.S. over ‘carbon colonialism’ – POLITICO

The issue has emerged as one of the most contentious in the talks among the nearly 200 governments that are aiming to finalize many of the rules laid out under the 2015 Paris agreement to keep average global temperatures from rising more than 2 degrees Celsius from pre-industrial levels. Critics say that the policies being implemented by the largest greenhouse gas polluters are falling short of that goal, and are well off the pace of what’s needed to meet the Paris agreement’s stretch target of limiting temperature increases to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

Kerry has pushed countries to revisit their plans and take stock of their emissions frequently to determine whether they were on track for those goals. “It just behooves us — in order to convey to people the seriousness of purpose — to try to revisit this as much as we can,” Kerry said at a press conference last week. “I hope we come up with a very short framework.”

But the call has incensed developing nations, and the group proposed ditching the whole section of a draft text for a pending Glasgow agreement regarding countries’ efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions that are warming the planet.

Under the Paris Agreement, countries agreed to update their climate plans every five years starting in 2025.

Meanwhile, a senior United States administration official on Thursday said calls from some of the nations that face the greatest threats from climate change to update official pledges every year was too extreme.

The dispute over the frequency of the national pledges comes a day after the United States and China issued a surprise collaboration agreement that spurred new optimism for reaching a broad agreement on the negotiations to advance the fight against climate change. The U.S. official told reporters it was too early to tell whether the pact with China had influenced the broader negotiations.

Under the Paris climate agreement, countries were due to update their climate initiatives this year. While some nations have upped their climate goals, not all have — or they have only modestly adjusted their targets, including countries like Brazil, Mexico and China, the world’s largest greenhouse gas polluter.

The new submissions set the word on a path of 2.4 degrees Celsius warmer than pre-industrial levels this century, according to a report by Climate Action Tracker, well short of the growing calls to aim for the 1.5 degrees Celsius target.

Pacheco Balanza criticized the focus on squeezing additional emissions cuts from nations, including the more frequent evaluations.

“We are not equally responsible for the gap, the ambition gap… developed countries have over-used their domestic carbon space and now they’re using the space of developing countries,” he said.

But the U.S. official pointed to Beijing’s decision to increase its climate action as evidence developing countries were able take action. China is the largest member of the group that Pacheco Balanza represents.

China has said it would keep revisiting its 2030 climate plan, and agreed under its pact with the U.S. on Wednesday to try to reduce its emissions of methane, a potent heat-trapping gas.

The current option on the table at the talks would require countries to provide an update on their climate pledges in 2022. But some nations, including those in a nearly 80-country alliance calling for the world to hold temperatures to the 1.5 degrees Celsius mark, want the assessments to come every year.

“We need to have everybody in this group be accountable for what their their leaders and their ministers have committed to,” Tina Stege, the lead negotiator for the Marshall Islands and chair of the so-called High Ambition Coalition, said this week. “That’s really the basis for the trust that we have to get ambitious action, ambitious outcomes.”

The division on how responsible each nation is for slashing emissions reflects long-standing friction between developing nations and richer countries.

Developing countries say richer nations must bear the burden to slash emissions and provide assistance like finance and technology transfers since it is their pollution that is causing the climate change currently afflicting the planet. But developing nations are projected to account for a bulk of future emissions, meaning those countries must achieve economic growth in a greener way to slow temperature increases.

Pacheco Balanza said the concept of evaluating climate progress next year would break from the plans laid out in the Paris climate agreement.

And he criticized developed countries for failing to fulfill finance obligations laid out in the Paris climate agreement, Pacheco Balanza said. Rich nations missed a goal to deliver $100 billion annually in climate finance to developing countries by 2020, but have vowed to hit that by 2023 — though without making up for the shortfall, something developing nations are still arguing for in the talks.

The senior U.S. official also said the U.S. would oppose efforts to create a fund to compensate other countries for “loss and damage,” or the climate devastation largely caused by historical emissions from rich countries. The U.S. has long held that position, frustrating low-lying and other nations vulnerable to climate change who want developed countries to shoulder more responsibility for climate change.
