Seaford’s Ashley Diaz first girl to place in sectional wrestling tournament | Newsday

Ashley Diaz became the first girl in Long Island history to place in a sectional wrestling tournament.

The Seaford sophomore won by fall over Wheatley’s Joe Manzano to place fifth at 118 pounds in the Nassau County Division II sectional tournament at Cold Spring Harbor High School late Saturday night. It was the third win in the tournament for Diaz, who pinned Manzano in 1:45. She finished with a 3-2 record.

It was a historic moment in the 64 years of the Nassau sectional: a girl going where no girl had gone before — to the winner’s podium.

“I felt so proud and very excited to be standing there on the podium,” Diaz said of her fifth-place finish (the top six place). “It was a great accomplishment being the first girl to place in the county tournament. And hopefully I’ve inspired other girls to follow their dreams and compete. I’m the first but I’m sure I’m not the last.”

Diaz’s road to the victory platform was not an easy one. She was beaten in her very first sectional bout by second-seeded Justin Dvorak of Locust Valley, losing a 10-7 decision.

The early loss did not discourage the 15-year-old history-maker, who stormed through the wrestleback rounds for a shot at third place. Diaz beat North Shore’s Kevin Becker and pinned Jonah Santoro of Locust Valley in 3:55, guaranteeing her a place on the podium. She was pinned by Jefry Pacheco of Island Trees in 1:44 and forced to wrestle for fifth place against Manzano.

“I’ve been wrestling since seventh grade and feel I won because of all the work on my technique and dedication in the gym,” Diaz said. “And I’ve found that eating a clean-based diet with high-protein foods is important. I cook a lot and I cook most of my meals because everything is about balance and moderation.”

Diaz earned her big first-period win with a sweet single- leg takedown that she worked into a Half Nelson and the pin. She credits her technique to a workout schedule with the Vougar wrestling club and time with the Razor Girls Wrestling Club.

“She wrestled in a few sanctioned high school events for girls over the past four months and she’s done well,” Razor coach Teddy DiPasquale said. “She won a prominent preseason high school tournament at the Journeymen Fall Classic in Albany and she’s an emerging figure on the girls wrestling scene from Long Island.”

“I’ve focused on getting stronger while maintaining mobility for strength and muscle mass,” Diaz said. “I was into jiu-jitsu and competitive swimming when I was younger. And that inspired me to try wrestling. We don’t have a pool or a team at my high school, so I tried wrestling.”

Her father, Joel Diaz, said he’s proud of her accomplishment. He’s also overwhelmed by it all.

“I was nervous at first and afraid of serious injury because the boys are very strong,” he said. “I’m cautious about this whole journey in such a tough sport, the toughest sport of all. I have other parents telling me she inspires other girls to wrestle, and that’s incredible.”

Her mother, Cynthia Diaz, said, “Ashley was bullied by a boy in elementary school, and we put her in jiu-jitsu to protect herself. He was always kicking her and pulling her hair. Now she wrestles. He doesn’t bother her anymore.

“She just amazes me. She’s a strong, powerful woman who wants to attend medical school and become a doctor and make a difference.”

Ericsson, TDC Net enable 5G robot connectivity trial

TDC Net, Danish robotics company Shape Robotics and Ericsson have powered an innovative 5G robot connectivity trial in Denmark that has enabled a teenage student to join his classmates in real time, inside and outside the classroom, during the school day despite having a medical condition which prevents him from physically attending school.

Rasmus Dalsten (13), from Herlev in Denmark, experiences a full day in the presence of his peers via a tablet with a live video connection from a 5G smartphone mounted on a fully mobile robot in the school premises.

The extremely low latency, fast speed and high data-handling capabilities of 5G mean that Rasmus, who is unable to physically attend school because of a lung condition, not only doesn’t miss out on classroom or schoolyard activity, but has the freedom to move and look where he wants.

Rasmus had a previous robot that was controlled by teachers and classmates at school. If he wanted to change the view of what he was seeing, someone at school had to physically turn the robot in that direction.

With 5G, Rasmus has full control of the robot, called Fable, which is about the size of a small teddy bear. Wherever he wants to go, and whoever he wants to make contact with at school, he controls Fable to become his real-time eyes and ears.

He can react to classroom lessons as they happen by steering Fable himself. If someone behind Fable makes a comment as part of a discussion, Rasmus can maneuver Fable to see who is speaking, and even join in.

Rasmus says: “I’ve got a new robot that I can turn around myself and it’s no trouble for the adults or myself. It is very nice.”

Rasmus’s mother, Charlotte Dalsten, is impressed that Fable, which Rasmus has trialed for six months, allows him to make instant eye contact with his classmates.

“Rasmus logs onto the PC and the iPad, which is connected to the robot,” she says. “This way he gets to be with his school class all day, during lunch breaks and in class. It has been important for me to see that Rasmus is happy when he logs on, that the others interact with him and that he is able to look around and make eye contact with them.”

Rasmus’s teacher, Cille, says the 5G-powered robot enables Rasmus to take part in lessons on a par with other classmates who are physically in the room.

“It is not me who decides if he looks at the blackboard or if he looks at those in the classroom who are speaking,” she says. “He decides where to look and where to go. That’s what he would do if he was here physically. So that has clearly been the biggest benefit.”

The 5G trial emerged from collaboration between Danish  communications service provider, TDC Net, Danish robotics company Shape Robotics and Ericsson at the TDC/Ericsson 5G Innovation Hub in Denmark.

Ericsson, TDC Net and Shape Robotics say the trial has proved the potential of 5G-enabled mobile robotic connectivity use across a host of use cases spanning domestic, workplace and industrial applications.

Moises Pacheco, CTO and Co-Founder, Shape Robotics, says: “Thanks to the collaboration with TDC NET and Ericsson, we have been able to show the potential in combining 5G technology with robots in an educational setting. Although Fable also works with 4G, in practice, it is a different robot when using 5G. With 5G, students experience lightning-fast sound and image, so they can participate on the same terms as other students.”

Toke Binzer, Vice President, Technology, Strategy and Economics, TDC NET, says: “It is roughly a year since we initiated the launch of the first nationwide 5G network in Denmark. Since then, we have seen increased interest in using the technology to deliver value within many different sectors.Robots connected to the 5G-network can, unlike other robots, both send and receive large amounts of data without delays, while at the same time being able to be controlled remotely. And if we take a step back from the educational sector it becomes clear that the learnings from this project can be transferred to other areas such healthcare, social care and working remotely across industries.”

Niclas Backlund, Head of Ericsson Denmark, says: “Denmark was one of the first countries in the world to roll out a nationwide 5G network. I am convinced that the Danish robot example, together with the other initiatives we have implemented with the 5G Innovation Hub, can inspire companies beyond our borders. 5G proves to be a fruitful innovation platform for new use cases. This remote school application really shows the power of digitalization to address societal needs and is an excellent example of digital inclusion.”

Here’s what Utah restaurants are offering for Valentine’s Day, and other options for the big weekend

Editor’s note • This story is available to Salt Lake Tribune subscribers only. Thank you for supporting local journalism.

Because Valentine’s Day lands on a Monday, restaurants are offering reservations starting on Friday, Feb. 11, and running through Feb. 14.

In all cases, assume reservations are required, that tax and gratuity are extra, and that you should book now, if it’s not too late — for example, Log Haven is totally filled for Feb. 14, and so is Caffe Molise, though they may have a few walk-in tables available that day.

If you aren’t able to grab a reservation and aren’t stuck on celebrating on the 14th proper, note that Table X is offering its Valentine’s menu for a full two weeks, through Feb. 19.

For those who aren’t into traditional sit-down romantic dinners, we’ve included some other options — after all, the Valentine’s weekend also encompasses Super Bowl Sunday on the 13th.
