Six miles of streets in unincorporated South Whittier to be repaved – Whittier Daily News

By December, repaving six miles of streets in portions of unincorporated South Whittier could be under way as part of an $11 million project.

It’s one of many the county will have launched or completed in recent years in unincorporated South and West Whittier.

The repaving is badly needed for the streets, long-time area leaders say of the project that is expected to be completed by July 2022.

“It looks like hell and the roads are deteriorating,” Butch Redman, a South Whittier activist, who has lived in the area for 73 years, said. “It looks like cobblestone. The whole area needs it.”

The work will be done on Leland Avenue from Leffingwell Road to Florence Avenue and  residential streets east of Carmenita Road, south of Virginia Avenue and Fendale Street, north of Meyer Road, and south west of the Candlewood Country Club.

According to information supplied by the office of Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn, work  will include:

The Board of Supervisors approved the project at its May 4 meeting.

The money is coming from SB 1, also known as the Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017, which raised the gas excise tax by 12 cents a gallon, with annual adjustments for inflation. Diesel excise taxes are going up 20 cents, while the diesel sales tax will rise from 1.75 to 5.75%.

Ralph Pacheco, a Whittier Union High School District trustee from South Whittier, agreed with Redman the streets need repaving.

“There’s a small number of potholes but it’s not major but several cracks, particularly north of Meyer,” Pacheco said. ” I’m happy it’s being done but it’s been a while since they’ve been repaved.”

Relax My Cat’s music will help to calm and soothe your cat or kitten in a variety of situations. Minimise separation anxiety, reduce hyperactivity, minimise fear of thunderstorms or fireworks, stop unwanted whining, comfort sick or injured cats and calm your cat on car journeys – Relax My Cat does it all!

Our music is based on feline vocal communication and environmental sounds that pique the interest of cats; it is written in a musical language that is uniquely designed to appeal to the domestic cat. All of the music is recorded on traditional instruments and the human voice. No actual cat, mouse, or bird calls are used (although it may sound like it).

Relax My Cat’s music is unique, and will help in a variety of situations as a substitute for medication. We have helped thousands of cats and kittens worldwide to sleep and reduce their anxiety. Music therapy for your cat can keep them calm, happy and healthy, and it is a great way to rehabilitate rescue cats – or just get your kitten or cat used to their new home.

Being re-homed is an incredibly stressful time for cats – as they have to get used to a lot of different sights and sounds, as well as their new family and any other pets in the household. We recommend that you play Relax My Cat during this time, and it will help reduce their heart rate and relax them while they explore their new surroundings. No more whining kittens – they will get used to your home in no time at all with the help of Relax My Cat’s music!

You may be litter training, which can be a stressful time for both dog and parent, and our music will soothe your kitten making your life easier. When listening to Relax My Cat you will notice your kitten start to relax, and get more used to their tray, or similarly if you are training them to get used to their travel box.

It is also very useful to calm your cat during car journeys – which many kittens find a stressful time. They may associate it with vets visits – so we recommend playing Relax My Cat’s music before and after visits to the vet to reduce their stress.

The worst time of year for over 60% of cats is Firework season – the loud bangs are really scary for them and you may notice a huge change in your kitty during this time. Thunderstorms are another difficult time for cats, with the majority of cats being very scared of storms because of the unfamiliar loud noises. Relax My Cat is the perfect solution to this anxiety inducing situation – just play our music to reduce your cats anxiety and make them feel safe.

The most common problem we hear is separation anxiety in cats – being separated from you can cause severe anxiety in many cats. Relax My Cat’s music has improved thousands of cases of separation anxiety and noisy felines all over the world.

Our music will help cats of all breeds and ages to stay relaxed and keep calm. We are also on a number of social media platforms – so join our community and let’s chat! We love to hear about and see pictures of your kitties!

3 Things About Me

  1. Personal: I was born in 1980 in Mexico. When I was 8 years old my family moved to the U.S. and we ended up in Gilroy CA, where I’ve lived ever since. I attended Gilroy high school and graduated in 1998. I started taping right out of high school. In 1999, I joined the union as a taper and worked for a shop in San Jose until 2006 Then I went to work for a shop in San Francisco for 10 years. In 2017 I came to work for J&J Acoustics.

  2. Family: In 2003 I married my wife Alejandra, we have two sons, one 17 and another 15. I spend a lot of time with my wife and kids. We spend a lot of time at a small ranch we rent, where we keep some riding horses, a couple of cows, and some chickens. We all enjoy being there and tending to our animals.

  3. Hobbies: On weekends, especially in the summertime I participate in the sport of Charreria, which is basically Mexican rodeo. I enjoy this sport because traditionally it has been practiced by most of my family. With my 2 sons now learning and participating in this sport, it makes it even more enjoyable for me.

What I Like About Working at J & J Acoustics

Working at J&J Acoustics is being part of a winning team. Being an employee for J&J Acoustics allows me to take part in the construction of the biggest and most important projects in the Bay Area. Working for J&J Acoustics is a very positive experience. It is very easy to accomplish our goals out in the field thanks to everyone who is always ready to help. Whether it’s getting material or equipment, paperwork, or additional information on projects, the people in the office are always available and ready to help. Four San Marcos athletes ink LOIs on National Signing Day

Four college-bound athletes took the stage at the Performing Arts Center inside San Marcos High School early Wednesday morning to ink their letters of intent for National Signing Day.

Angelina Sotelo, a four-year letterman for the girls’ basketball team, signed with Texas Luthern University. Sotelo liked that TLU is a very good academic school and was excited by the chance to play for head coach Troy Patterson in Seguin.

“It means a lot,” Sotelo said. “This is a really big step in my future and this journey. And I just can’t wait … I mean, it’s only the start.”

Wednesday was a day Kayleigh Dorsey had been waiting a long time for. She signed to join Central Christian College of Kansas’ women’s golf team. She’d taken a visit to the school in McPherson, Kan., and fell in love with the smaller-sized campus and family atmosphere.

“I’ve honestly been dreaming about this day for as long as I can remember. I’ve always seen people go up (on the stage) and do this. And I just want it to be a part of that as well,” Dorsey said. “It just felt really good. It felt like I was accomplishing everything I wanted to.”

Avery Pacheco was originally involved in competitive cheerleading, but became interested in the Diamond Line drill team in middle school. On Wednesday, she became the first dancer at San Marcos to sign to a college team, signing with Tarleton State after taking a visit in Stephenville.

“(It’s) a great honor because I have worked my whole life for this,” Pacheco said. “And my team being here also meant a lot to me because my team means everything to me. They’re the best team I could ever ask for. And I don’t know, it just meant a lot because it’s something I’ve never done before. I didn’t think it would ever happen for me and I’m glad I get to continue my journey.”

Jacob Pinkston signed with Southern Virginia, a school in Buena Vista, Va., after anchoring the San Marcos offensive line en route to a playoff appearance. Pinkston took a liking to the school’s multimedia program and head coach Edwin Mulitalo, a Super Bowl-winning former NFL player for the Baltimore Ravens and Detroit Lions.

“I’ve seen former teammates sign and I’m proud of them and I wanted to be like them,” Pinkston said. “(Southern Virginia was) really good to me. And so I wanted to be good to them.”

Rattlers athletic director John Walsh was proud of the group’s accomplishments.

“They’re all ambassadors of San Marcos,” Walsh said. “Signing Day’s about honoring the athletes and Signing Day’s about showing appreciation to the people who helped these athletes.”

Art Industry News: German Painter Ernst Ludwig Kirchner’s Death by Suicide May Actually Have Been Murder + Other Stories | Artnet News

Art Industry News is a daily digest of the most consequential developments coming out of the art world and art market. Here’s what you need to know on this Tuesday, October 12.

NEED-TO-READ

Kunsthaus Zurich Under Scrutiny For Arms Dealer Ties – The splashy new Kunsthaus Zurich is getting flak for its association with the Swiss industrialist Emil Georg Bührle, who made his fortune selling arms to Nazi Germany and bought up reams of looted art. Bürhle was a board member at the institution and 203 works from his collection are due to be shown in the museum’s $220 million extension. “It’s a collection built with money from arms sales, from slave labor, from child labor,” said historian Erich Keller. (New York Times)

Jay-Z Is Hitting Up a Lot of Art Stuff in London – The rapper and music producer is in London for Frieze week and has already been spotted at high-profile events around town. He attended a performance by Torkwase Dyson at Pace the opening of Antwaun Sargent’s Gagosian exhibition “Social Works II.” (Fun fact: Dyson’s uncle is the author of the 2019 biography Jay-Z: Made in America. Small world!) (ARTnews)

Was Ernst Ludwig Kirchner Murdered? – The official account of the German Expressionist’s death by suicide has been called into question following an exhibition at the Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg. Kirchner, who struggled with depression and addiction, died from two gunshots to the chest in June 1938. But while historians say he was experiencing life-threatening depression at the time, weapons experts contend it is unlikely he fired both shots himself. No potential perpetrators have been identified. (The Art Newspaper)

On the Town With Art PR Maven Kaitlin Phillips – The Cut shadowed PR maven and Twitter personality Kaitlin Phillips (@yoloethics; sorry, her account is private) at a party at her East Village apartment. Painting sensation (and now gallerist) Jamian Juliano-Villani makes an appearance, as does artist Sam McKinniss—but the hostess proves elusive. (The Cut)

MOVERS & SHAKERS

Underground Museum Names Director – Meg Onli has been tapped to lead the Underground Museum in Los Angeles. She currently serves as associate curator of the Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia, and will co-lead the space with COO Cristina Pacheco. (Artforum)

The V&A Will Show a Lost Fabergé Egg – London’s Victoria & Albert Museum will present the long-lost Third Imperial Egg in its new exhibition devoted to Fabergé. The egg was rediscovered by a businessman in 2011 at a street market and will go on view alongside other Fabergé eggs owned by the Romanovs, a former imperial house of Russia. (Archaeology Wiki)

Artist Makes Weird Monument to Angela Merkel – Wilhelm Koch has unveiled a sculpture of the German Chancellor Angela Merkel on horseback. He created the work in response to the tradition of men being represented in equestrian statues. If it feels absurd, Koch says, that’s kind of the point. (Monopol)

Studio Voltaire Has Reopened – The London nonprofit has reopened after a £2.8 million ($3.8 million) revamp. The site now has 42 percent more space for artist studios, as well as new facilities including a kitchen and two residency spaces. (Press release)

FOR ART’S SAKE

See Es Devlin’s Monumental New Work at 180 Strand – The artist and set designer has unveiled BLUESKYWHITE at 180 The Strand in London as part of the new media exhibition “LUX: New Wave of Contemporary Art.” Inside a 24-meter-long red-lit tunnel, Devlin reads Bryon’s 1816 poem Darkness, which was written following the eruption of Indonesia’s Mount Tambora. The event appeared to dim the sun and caused temperatures to drop in what was known as “the year without summer.” In the second part of Devlin’s work, viewers are presented with contemporary accounts of solar geo-engineered solutions to global heating. (Press release)

Es Devlin, BLUESKYWHITE (2021).
