Opinion | After Enduring “Complete Hell” During Pandemic, Food Workers Face Obstacles Getting Covid-19 Vaccinations

The thousands of workers who pick, pack, and process our food have become eligible to receive the Covid-19 vaccine in many states. But they still face obstacles to actually getting the vaccine, as companies sort out their vaccination policies and advocates struggle to secure enough doses for a workforce that ranks among the most vulnerable to the coronavirus.

Labor organizations and the food industry spent months pushing for agricultural and food processing workers to be in early distribution phases of the Covid-19 vaccine. In December, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommended that agricultural workers be vaccinated in Phase 1b, and many states have followed suit.

Yet with the vaccine rollout moving slowly because of continued shortages and with some states shuffling around their priority populations, there are still unanswered questions about how and whether the vaccines will actually get to workers and about what role food manufacturers will play in getting shots into arms.

Florida is now requiring vaccine recipients to show state driver’s licenses or proof of residence, potentially excluding the state’s 200,000 migrant and seasonal farmworkers

Meanwhile, food system workers are still contracting the virus at workplaces across the country. More than 85,500 food and farmworkers have contracted Covid-19 and at least 368 have died as of Jan. 27, according to FERN’s tracker. Nearly 7,000 cases have been added to the database since the beginning of January, even with just a few states regularly reporting data.

Kristy Tijerina, a worker at a JBS meatpacking plant in Plainwell, Michigan, says it’s essential that the vaccine be allocated to the industry’s workers as quickly as possible. At her plant, at least 88 workers have contracted the virus and one has died. Tijerina herself contracted Covid-19 in the spring, and her father died of the virus in August.

“It’s just getting really bad right now,” she says of the case rates in her community. “The more everybody gets vaccinated, it’s a lot better for everybody working here together.”

One obstacle to expediently vaccinating food workers is the still-changing prioritization of essential workers in states’ vaccination phases. Amy Liebman, director of environmental and occupational health at the Migrant Clinicians Network (MCN), which has been supporting local health systems in vaccinating farmworkers, says it’s “been a disappointment” seeing food and farmworkers still unable to access vaccines in many states, given their high risk of contracting Covid-19.

“First and foremost, we need the doses,” Liebman says.

In California, home to as many as 800,000 farmworkers, Gov. Gavin Newsom recently shifted the state’s vaccine distribution structure to be age-based, leading to concerns that many essential workers would need to wait longer for their shots. Florida, another major agricultural producer, is now requiring vaccine recipients to show state driver’s licenses or proof of residence, potentially excluding the state’s 200,000 migrant and seasonal farmworkers from being vaccinated at all.

“Farmworkers are among the most vulnerable populations, because they work in close proximity to each other [and] they go home, often to multigenerational households,” said Fresno County supervisor Brian Pacheco at a vaccination site on Wednesday. Fresno County became one of the first counties in the country to begin vaccinating farmworkers this week and plans to vaccinate more than 3,000 agricultural workers in the coming days at vaccination sites around the county.

“Vaccinating our essential farmworkers will ensure the safety of their workplaces, their homes, their families, our food supply, and the vital services that they perform,” Pacheco said.

One of the logistical questions facing employers and health departments is where, exactly, workers should get inoculated. Particularly for migrant farmworkers, who may relocate between shots, vaccine distribution must happen at easily accessible locations, says Leibman. MCN is aiding in that effort with a virtual case management program that can help workers figure out how to get a second vaccine dose if they move after their first shot.

“We need to make sure that the vaccine is available to workers rather than the workers being available to the vaccine,” she says.

For meatpacking workers, the best option is to get vaccinated at work, says Mark Lauritsen, vice president of meatpacking at the United Food and Commercial Workers union. Many large meatpacking plants have their own health clinics, where workers already receive medical care. Workers may be less nervous getting vaccinated in a familiar setting, he says.

“We’re going to work to make sure that it’s an efficient process and a safe process, and that there’s no barriers to accessing [the vaccine],” he says. “The power of having it right there at the plant means we get to these people with very few obstacles.”

Yet there’s also an essential role for public health departments, especially in cases where workers may not trust their employer or report to work on a regular schedule. Advocates who represent subcontracted workers in food processing recommended recently that local health departments be “heavily involved” in vaccine distribution to ensure that temporary workers are reached.

In some states, meatpacking and other agricultural workers can already receive the vaccine or will qualify imminently. Iowa’s meatpacking workers are expected to be able to set up vaccine appointments by Feb. 1, and in Kansas, they began to qualify for vaccine appointments on Jan. 26.

Meatpackers are still figuring out some of the details of how they will vaccinate workers. Nikki Richardson, director of communications for JBS, says vaccination logistics are still being determined at each plant, and that in some cases, public health departments, pharmacies, or local health clinics will carry out worker vaccinations. But the company is “prepared for our phase of vaccine allocation whenever it may occur,” Richardson says.

Tyson Foods plans to “offer vaccinations on-site at our facilities, at no cost, while our team members are on the job,” said the company’s public relations manager, Derek Burleson. Tyson has contracted with Matrix Medical Network to coordinate its worker testing and vaccination, so the timing of vaccinations will depend on when states make vaccines available to Matrix, Burleson says.

Meatpacker JBS says it will pay workers $100 to get vaccinated. A critic called the incentive program an “attempt to distract from the company’s failure to protect its workers.”

Smithfield did not respond to questions about the specifics of its vaccination program.

Employers are also still sorting out whether to incentivize or compensate workers for getting vaccinated. In the grocery sector, where at least 109 union workers have died of Covid-19 and more than 17,000 have contracted the virus, some retailers are introducing incentives to encourage workers to get the vaccine, though they’re not requiring it. For instance, Instacart will pay $25 to employees who take time off to the get vaccinated. Trader Joe’s will give its workers two hours of pay per vaccine dose.

So far, JBS is the only meatpacker that has said it will pay workers to get the vaccine—$100 for employees of the Brazilian-owned meatpacker and its subsidiary Pilgrim’s Pride. But that approach isn’t uniformly popular.

Kim Cordova, the president of UFCW Local 7, said in a statement that JBS’s incentive program is an “attempt to distract from the company’s failure to protect its workers.” Local 7 represents workers at a JBS plant in Greeley, Colorado, where six workers have died of Covid-19 and nearly 450 have been sickened by the virus. The company should quickly restore hazard pay for its workers and implement daily testing, among other precautions, Cordova said.

Meatpackers are also mixed on whether the vaccine should be mandatory for their workers. JBS is “currently focused on achieving the highest voluntary participation rate possible,” says Richardson. Tyson is “strongly encouraging team members to take the vaccine but are not mandating it,” says Burleson.

Lauritsen says the UFCW is opposed to making the vaccine mandatory and that receiving the vaccine should not be a condition of employment. Besides, he says, workers are ready to get the vaccine without it being made compulsory.

“Given the work that’s been done, the complete hell that these folks have went through during this pandemic,” he says, “our members are ready to get the vaccination, and the sooner the better.”

Marvel unveils a slew of 2022 titles, including the Kang-centric TIMELESS, Rowell & Antônio’s SHE-HULK, and more – The Beat

Marvel Comics has released information on a number of titles and storylines launching in December 2021 and into early 2022. Included are the December-launching Devil’s Reign, the continuation of Chip Zdarsky and Marco Checchetto‘s Daredevil storyline; a multiverse-spanning Avengers adventure from Jason Aaron and Aaron Kuder; a new She-Hulk series from Rainbow Rowell and Rogê Antônio; and much more.

Here’s the full breakdown of the announced titles:

All hell breaks loose in the Marvel Universe as The Kingpin finally declares all-out war on the heroes in Devil’s Reign!  Having set the stage in their Eisner-nominated Daredevil epic, Chip Zdarsky and Marco Checchetto’s far-reaching crossover event finds Mayor Fisk outlawing all Super Heroes in New York and unleashing intel on all their dark secrets, while pitting Daredevil, Elektra, Captain America, Iron Man, Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four and many more against his Thunderbolt agents. But in the end…Who Will Reign?

This story was teased a few weeks back in the Spider-Man/Venom FCBD one-shot. The Zdarsky-written Daredevil series has been really excellent, and he’s worked hard to build up Wilson Fisk and his conflict between wanting to maintain his previous control of New York while also wanting to be taken seriously as a reformed politician. It’ll be interesting to see how this series builds on those themes.

Marvel Comics’ Avengers Forever pulls together archeologist Tony Stark aka the Invincible Ant-Man and Avengers from across the multiverse to bring order to timelines where ‘hope’ is a four letter word. Jason Aaron and Aaron Kuder present an all-new series that will redefine the Avengers as…the Multiverse’s Mightiest Heroes.

Another story that seems to have been teased a few weeks ago, this time in the Avengers/Hulk FCBD title. The multiverse is all the rage right now so this is also a totally logical move on Marvel’s part.

The future of the Marvel Universe is here, and Timeless is where it all begins. When a threatening new timeline emerges, Kang the Conqueror must fight his way through the coming year to protect the main 616 timeline he’s worked centuries to solidify as his own. Jed MacKay, Kev Walker, Joe Bennett, Mark Bagley and more provide a first look at what’s coming to the Marvel Universe in 2022 in a story that will prove…the Future is Timeless.

Speaking of things that are all the rage, given his debut at the end of the Disney+ Loki series the rise in prominence of Kang on the publishing side was pretty much a foregone conclusion. Jed Mackay has quickly become one of Marvel’s most consistently entertaining writers on books like Black Cat and Moon Knight.

House of X and Powers of X ushered in The First Krakoan Age of the X-Men. Now, Marvel Comics’ X Lives of Wolverine and X Deaths of Wolverine will test ‘the best there is at what he does’ before any mutant can survive to The Second Krakoan Age. Benjamin Percy, Joshua Cassara and Federico Vicentini tell two interlocked tales about what happens to Wolverine when…His Pasts Meet His Future.

It’s unclear if this will be a separate miniseries or a storyline in the ongoing Wolverine series that Percy and Cassara are already working on.

Marvel Comics’ She-Hulk, from Rainbow Rowell and Rogê Antônio, throws the book at Jennifer Walters as she tries to put her rage-filled days behind her and return to practicing law in defense of the innocent. But when a friend from her past comes knocking with a mystery she can’t resist, She-Hulk gets…Back To Bashing.

Shulkie’s return has also been pretty expected given the upcoming Disney+ series. She’s had a string of pretty great solo titles in recent years, so hopefully this one will continue that streak.

Dan Slott is joined by Carlos Pacheco and Rachael Stott for Marvel Comics’ Fantastic Four: Reckoning War, an epic saga over 15 years in the making. The original secret war of the Marvel Universe has been reignited and every living being in reality is in danger, for we are finally at…Our Day Of Reckoning.

“Over 15 years in the making” is interesting. What significant events took place in the Marvel Universe in 2007? Let the speculation begin!

Lunella Lafayette and her lovable twenty-foot dinosaur are BACK in Marvel Comics’ Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur.  But what shape will their partnership take in this exciting new era?  Keep your eyes peeled in the coming months for more news about the next adventure of the biggest brain in the world that will send dino-sized shockwaves throughout the Marvel Universe. In 2022, Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur will bring new meaning to the term “Marvel Team-Up” in a tale that promises to… Shake Your World.

No creative team listed for this title yet, but MG&DD has by accounts been a solid performer in collected editions. I’d wager this’ll be written by a YA author with some name recognition in the bookstore market.

Look for all of those titles from Marvel, and surely more that have yet to be announced, in December 2021 and January & February 2022.

International Space Station astronauts grow peppers in cosmos – Vegetable Growers News

Astronauts aboard the International Space Station have launched the Plant Habitat-04 experiment, which aims to grow peppers in space for the first time.

The scientists will conduct a microbial analysis of the plants. They will evaluate the relationship between the texture and the taste of the vegetables with the environment in which they grow and the care received during their development.

American astronaut Megan McArthur stated on her Twitter account that growing peppers will be a challenge due to their long germination and growth cycles. She also said she was excited about this experiment, as these fruits are a great source of vitamin C and contain other nutrients that can help supplement the astronauts’ diet.

The astronauts haven’t disclosed what type of pepper they planted as part of the experiment, but McArthur claimed she left a clue in her post.

NASA had stated in April that the pepper seeds would be sent to the International Space Station on SpaceX’s 22nd Commercial Refueling Services mission (CRS-22) to be grown in the Advanced Plant Habitat (APH).

The APH is one of three NASA plant growth chambers on the space station. It contains more than 180 sensors and has the ability to regulate humidity levels, temperature, and carbon dioxide concentrations as plants grow inside.

During the experiment, the astronauts will grow peppers in the APH for about four months and will perform two harvests. This will be a challenge that will test the reliability of the various APH systems because peppers take longer to germinate, grow, and develop than the previous space crops that NASA has grown, such as radishes and leafy greens.

Brazil’s Bolsonaro fans judiciary flames, calls top judge ‘son of a whore’ | Reuters

BRASILIA, Aug 6 (Reuters) – Brazil’s far-right President Jair Bolsonaro ignored calls to drop his feud with the Supreme Court on Friday and called one of its justices a “son of a whore,” amid rising tensions over his unfounded claims the nation’s voting system is vulnerable to fraud.

Speaking to supporters in southern Brazil, he insulted Luis Roberto Barroso, the top court justice who also heads the Supreme Electoral Court. The insult was uttered during a live broadcast shared on Bolsonaro’s Facebook account but later deleted. Copies continue to be shared on social media.

Justice Barroso, speaking at a forum on electoral systems after the comments, said that if his actions were causing such a nuisance, it was a sign he was doing his job properly.

Bolsonaro has railed for weeks against the electronic urns used in Brazil and pushed for the adoption of printed receipts that can be counted if any election result is disputed.

Critics say Bolsonaro, like former U.S. President Donald Trump, is sowing doubts in case he loses next year’s presidential election. He has threatened not to accept the result if the system is not changed.

With his popularity falling after overseeing the world’s second-highest COVID-19 death toll, opinion polls show Bolsonaro trails former leftist President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, though neither of them has officially announced they will run.

Earlier this week the Supreme Court approved an investigation into the president’s unfounded accusations about voter fraud.

On Thursday, in Bolsonaro’s worst set-back in Congress since taking office in 2019, a lower house committee voted to shelve a constitutional amendment he has been pushing that would have adopted printed ballots. read more

Speaker Arthur Lira, however, said on Friday he would put the controversial amendment to the plenary despite the committee defeat. He explained the decision saying that a quick resolution was preferable because political tensions over the issue are holding up the country’s legislative agenda.

The proposal is not expected to clear the lower chamber where constitutional amendments need three-fifths of the votes.

Earlier on Friday, Senate President Rodrigo Pacheco criticized Bolsonaro for his attacks on the Supreme Court and offered to mediate, saying the president’s insults against Barroso were unacceptable.

Pacheco said Bolsonaro must respect the results of next year’s election even if he fails to change the all-electronic voting system – which the president groundlessly claims is vulnerable to tampering.

“Any threat, however slight, to this democracy will be promptly rejected by the Senate,” Pacheco said in a GloboNews television interview.

The Senate head said anyone advocating a “democratic retreat” or the suspension of next year’s elections would be seen as an “enemy of the nation.”

“I think a majority in Congress at this moment want to maintain the electronic voting system,” he said.
