Rockets pull off PG sweep

The Kelowna Rockets made sure they paid their northern rivals back twofold.

In likely a foul mood after dropping a 5-2 decision to the Prince George Cougars on home ice Wednesday, the Rockets made sure they made the most of their return trip north.

Kelowna completed a two-game sweep in Prince George with back-to-back 3-2 wins.

Turner McMillen, Jake Lee and Gabriel Szturc, with what stood up as the game winner, scored for the Rockets in the victory.

McMillen opened the scoring six minutes into the opening period. Jackson DeSouza started the play after sprawling out to knock the puck off a Cougar stick in the defensive zone.

Noah Dorey chipped the puck to McMillen who broke out with Marcus Pacheco on a two-on-one. A pass to Pacheco deflected off a Prince George player,past Tyler Brennan.

Connor Bowie tied it eight minutes into the second, as the teams went into the final 20 minutes deadlocked at 1-1.

Lee put the Rockets up for good 27 seconds into the third when, on a Kelowna power play,he jumped off the right point, skated through the slot, and beat Brennan high to the glove side from the top of the left circle.

Szturc scored the winner 13 minutes in then he beat a defenceman to a rebound, and backhanded a shot past Brennan, off the far post and in.

It was the rookie’s 10th of the season.

Hudson Thornton made it interesting, pulling the Cougars to within one with Brennan on the bench for a sixth attacker.

Despite some tense moments, the Rockets held on for their 28th win of the season.

The Rockets, following the Blazers 4-3 overtime loss to Vancouver, are 10 behind Kamloops atop the BC Division. The Rockets hold a game in hand.

Kelowna return home to host the Tri-City Americans Family Day Monday at 2p.m. at Prospera Place.
