An up-close look at the Canadian Freedom Convoy: Spearheading resistance to COVID tyranny – LifeSite

(LifeSiteNewsFor two weeks now, LifeSite has been reporting intensely on the Canadian trucker convoy for freedom which saw tens of thousands of trucks from the furthest reaches of the country head toward the national capital of Ottawa to demand the return of freedom to Canada.

From the very beginning they were clear that this movement was not just for truckers but for the freedom of all Canadians. It was sparked by the trucker vaccine mandate which forbade unvaccinated truckers from crossing the U.S.-Canada border but took on the quest for freedom in Canada. LifeSite has been on the ground across the country to cover those parts we could get to in order to provide you with a first-hand look at what is happening on the ground and to counter the absolutely false narrative being touted by the mainstream media, the prime minister, and others.

As of this writing, the latest news is that Ottawa has declared a state of emergency and police have seized the fuel intended for the truckers to keep them from freezing to death in the bitter cold. GoFundMe cancelled the $10 million donated by supporters of the convoy. They were going to donate it to other charities, but public clamor caused them to return the funds to the donors. The truckers are determined to stay put until freedom is returned, and just now Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò has sent a message of encouragement to the truckers.

Boy what a whirlwind it has been for the last two weeks! My video producer and I have been back and forth the two-and-a-half-hour trip to Ottawa day after day with breaking news happening by the second. We hired a chopper to get the lay of the land, only to learn that Ottawa had restricted the air space above the city as it never has before. We have seen hundreds of thousands of Canadians over the last two weeks in the most loving, happy, encouraging, hopeful, fun demonstration we have ever seen.

As the truckers rolled in they were greeted along highways and bridges by supporters from every walk of live, every creed, every color. In this most culturally diverse land, there were outpourings of support that could hardly be imagined. Families waiting and praying in the bitter cold for hours on end, offering money, food, hot drinks, fuel, snacks, and “thank you” letters scribbled with painted pictures by little children. The overwhelming gratitude from Canadians is expressed in tears, as is the gratitude of the truckers who are soldiering this fight.

Let me just tell you one snippet from Saturday. Again it was bitterly cold. We arrived with one of my sons joining in to witness this piece of Canadian history. It was a bright and sunny day, but about 20 below zero. But it was so crowded on and in front of Parliament Hill you could hardly move. It was like a crowded dance hall with people joyfully dancing, shouting “FREEDOM,” so many draped in Canadian flags and listening to inspiring speakers urging them to stand for a return to freedom.

Here is a little glimpse of the joy and fraternity on display there:

It was so crowded that a young lady accidentally tripped me up as I was trying to make my way through the crowd. She apologized so kindly and as I was saying no trouble, I was still actually in the midst of trying to catch my balance while still filming. I happened to almost fall into a fellow who caught me, then in typical Canadian fashion he apologized for my bumping into him and also gave me an encouraging little hug saying, “Sorry, brother.”

There is such fraternity, such friendliness, such love. This is Canada, this is what Canadians are all about. That is the reality on the ground. And that comes in stark contrast to the false narrative — the disinformation — being peddled by the mainstream media and the prime minister.

Trudeau claims the truckers and their supporters are a small fringe minority holding unacceptable views. Then, after being in isolation for exposure to COVID after having been vaxxed three times and catching COVID from his fully vaxxed and boosted son — thus proving the senselessness of the vaccine mandate, by the way — Trudeau gave a hate-filled rant against the truckers painting them as a mob of violent racist extremists. Have a look:

BREAKING: Blackface enthusiast Justin Trudeau describes the Trucker Convoy as a small fringe minority “who are holding unacceptable views that do not represent the views of Canadians who have been there for each other” #cdnpoli pic.twitter.com/zPd7hzPcTI

— Unacceptable Rowan (@canmericanized) January 26, 2022

And the mayor of Ottawa Jim Watson is similarly inflammatory: “It’s disturbing when you see the protest turning into what looks like some kind of a fun carnival, where they’ve got bouncy castles, and hot tubs, and saunas.”

Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson comments on the convoy to CTV:

“It’s disturbing when you see the protest turning into what looks like some kind of a fun carnival, where they’ve got bouncy castles, and hot tubs, and saunas” https://t.co/Q52l6xulvv

— Ryan O’Connor (@rpoconnor) February 6, 2022

And watch this from the mainstream media.

Here is CBC suggesting that the Russians are behind the protest!

The CBC suggests “Russian actors” are behind the #TruckersForFreedom convoy. Seriously. #cdnpoli pic.twitter.com/a6sQyWtKkx

And not to be outdone here is MSNBC saying the truckers are stealing food from the homeless in Ottawa:

Listen to MSNBC attack the Truckers as a cult

This is Capital TV from Hunger Games but in real life pic.twitter.com/ypZzIIrWLJ

— Truckistan Amb. Poso 🏁 (@JackPosobiec) January 31, 2022

A columnist for The Washington Post called the trucking convoy movement “extremist” and “fringe” and compared it to a “temper tantrum” in an article entitled “Canada must confront the toxic ‘Freedom Convoy’ head-on.”

I could go on and on, but you get the picture. This is a disinformation campaign. Intentional falsehood is being portrayed. Are there perhaps a few bad actors in this huge crowd? Sure. But 99.9 percent are peaceful, loving Canadians who have said “Enough!” to the senseless mandates and are demanding freedom.

Last week the media narrative was about how small the demonstration was. It was actually so huge that crowds could be found scattered all over Ottawa. Here is another group that was by Rideau Mall down the street from the main group:

As we showed you already in a video we released over the weekend, the police have come out in force to create hassle for the truckers and their supporters by issuing hundreds of tickets for noise violations (honking), for seatbelt infractions, having license plates obscured, etc.

Watch this video of an old man pulled over for honking his support for the truckers:

Now police in Ottawa have seized the truckers fuel, which is of course dangerous considering the temperatures are such that without running their engines, the truckers would freeze to death.

“Fuel is being seized, yes,” says a police officer at 6:55 in this video.

The leadership of the convoy held another press conference yesterday in which they presented calmly that they are ready to be arrested and will remain peaceful — but will not move. They are ready to be removed by police and will not resist, but will not move of their own accord.

And the majority of the public, despite the lies of the Mainstream media and politicians, are supporting freedom. A new survey from Canada’s leading polling company Angus Reid reveals 54 percent of Canadians feel it’s time to “remove restrictions and let Canadians manage their own level of risk.”

The Catholic Church too is divided on this question. Shamefully the Archbishop of Edmonton Richard Smith gave a homily in which he compared the vax mandates to diving mandates and the freedom demonstrators to those who Jesus threw out of the temple.

But Texas Bishop Joseph Strickland has come out supporting the truckers.

The freedom convoy is deeply rooted in the basic values that have built the world we take for granted. We must be free to make choices for our own lives. God has given us a tremendous freedom as He created us in His image. We MUST respect individual freedom.

And in a message of support for the truckers you can read on LifeSiteNews, Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò says:

Your protest, dear Canadian truck driver friends, joins a worldwide chorus that wants to oppose the establishment of the New World Order on the rubble of nation states…

[Y]our yearning for freedom was shown in all its coordinated harmony, moving towards the capital Ottawa. Dear truck drivers, you are facing great difficulties, not only because you give up your work to demonstrate, but also because of the adverse weather conditions, long nights in the cold, and attempts to be cleared away that you face. But along with these difficulties you have also experienced the closeness of many of your fellow citizens, who like you have understood the looming threat and want to support you in protesting against the regime. Allow me also to express to you my support and my spiritual closeness, to which I join the prayer that your event may be crowned with success and may also extend to other countries.

Today more than ever it is essential that you realize that it is no longer possible to passively assist: it is necessary to take a position, to fight for freedom, to demand respect for natural freedoms. But even more, dear Canadian brothers, it is necessary to understand that this dystopia serves to establish the dictatorship of the New World Order and totally erase every trace of Our Lord Jesus Christ from society, from history, and from the traditions of peoples.

Demonstrate for your rights, Canadian friends: but may these rights not be limited to a simple claim to the freedom to enter supermarkets or not to be vaccinated: may it also be a proud and courageous claim to your sacrosanct right to be free men. But your demonstration should be one of true freedom, reminding you that it is the Truth – that is, Our Lord Jesus Christ – who alone can guarantee you freedom: the truth will make you free.

And Canadian Catholics are doing just that. A group of Catholics led by John Pacheco has prayed a public rosary during the truckers’ convoy. They have held multiple rosary rallies processing from the Supreme Court to Parliament:

In the end, the world is watching. It has been incredible to see trucker convoys for freedom from the Great Reset agenda taking place in many different countries. In America, in the Netherlands, in Brazil and many other nations. As a Canadian I’m so proud to see many of the truckers in other nations flying the Canadian flag since it has become a symbol of resistance to the COVID tyranny.

It is so evident that the forcing of this abortion-tainted vaccine on the whole planet is about much more than a feared pandemic. The failure of the vaccines to stop transmission which has been proved in spades has, at least for those willing to see, forced off the rose-colored glasses and allowed people to glimpse the grab for total control of the masses by the elites. The fomenting of different classes of citizenry with a Chinese-style social credit system regulating the lives of all inhabitants on the planet with vax passes allowing privileges to the citizens who bend the knee to the dictators — and those who conscientiously object suffer.

There remains “choice,” the dictators say, but the cost of that choice for those unwilling to take the abortion-tainted dangerous and inefficacious COVID jab is exclusion from society. It is the same “choice” that unborn children are afforded with the so-called “woman’s right to choose.” It is only choice of the oppressor over the oppressed. We must resist. With fidelity to God and begging His help against the infernal forces pushing the great reset we must resist. And one battle cry that no one in history could have predicted has today taken center stage — HONK, HONK!

Daily Report – Bitcoin and Market Update (February 7 2022) – The Birb Nest

HTF 1W:

Weekly chart shows off a progression to the upside off the lows at 33000 USD. It seems that bitcoin is heading towards the $50k mean reversion retest.

Firstly, BTCUSD has closed a successful weekly breakout to the upside at the weekly highs, which implies that the week was dominated by the bullish recovery.

MA50 is set as potential resistance at $50k USD, which in my opinion will serve as a temporary stop on the way up. Because the profile of the average is relatively flat and low at momentum, it would be a bit surprising to expect a massive push through the ATH in one go, but I do not necessarily cross it out of my list of scenarios.

The weekly trend and momentum are still fully oversold at the levels of the previous bottoming regions: 3-4k USD, 6-7k USD, 30k USD. This makes me think that, overall, bitcoin has more upside room for growth and can finally over shoot the old all time highs at quite a decent, not-overbought, momentum.

The weekly supports are defined by the bottom candle’s high at 39000 USD and the following week’s close at 41700 USD.

HTF 1D:

Daily chart shows a first successful daily breakout over the CTF Trailer dynamic resistance since the correction started in mid November 2021.

After breaking through the CTF Trailer, the bull confirmation has been triggered and hence the official market tendency shifts in the bullish favor. Bulls have re-gained the upper hand officially and the momentum is on the bullish side. CTF Stop is set at 36398 USD which is the invalidation level for the brand-new upwards trend that has just kicked off.

That being said, BTCUSD is currently targeting the volatility-based supply zone 43000-46000 USD, which technically is rather a poor risk/reward spot to long for short-term positions. Long-term traders who choose to be more conservative and careful can choose to wait for the first successful daily candle above the High Momentum Band over 46000 USD, which would print a volatility breakout signal.

BWAP block shows demand region at 37.4-38.1k USD and in case of a sudden breakdown caused by external factors, I could see this zone playing out as one of the support areas.

For now, the trend is upwards-oriented with a bit of ease to be expected within the 43-46k USD.

HTF 12H:

The middaily chart is showing a sequence of upwards oriented candlesticks forming higher highs and higher lows. It stands for a clear definition of an upwards trend.

The main “signal” and hint of the momentum flipping back to the bullish side was flashed several days ago with the breakout above $40365 level. Since then, a new medium-term (at least) trend has been officially initiated in the chart.

CTF Trailer Stop is set (dynamically) at 40305 USD and in it could be used as a condition protective stop level. A daily close below that level (the breach alone is not enough; needs to close below) would hint a fake breakout and downwards continuation.

For now, the trend is aiming higher for the first time in the last 3-month correction period. Bulls have re-gained the upper hand in the market.

MTF 4H:

MTF chart displays a powerful breakout to the upside from a short term sideways movement between the 4th and the 7th of February.

Volatility based region provides supply within the 43.3-44.3k USD region and unless a successful breakout outside the upper band occurs I would expect at least a local short-term throwback towards 41-42k USD region. It’s not compulsory or certain, though.

CTF Trailer shows an aggressive expansion and provides the current BTCUSD upwards trend with a Stop invalidation level at 42466 USD. If a breakdown below that level happens, it is likely bitcoin see lower levels in the high 30000s USD as an option, especially 38.5-39.5k USD region defined by the Low Momentum Band. It is a volatility based demand zone for short-term longs to be placed more safely.

The Level Lines suggest automatically adjusted resistances and support levels accordingly as follows:

48949
45769
44037

41376
38678
36208

LTF 1H:

The hourly chart shows demand/supply blocks visualized based on the key pivotal levels of bitcoin’s price action. Hence, it reveals the most important technical levels of interest to pay attention to.

Local support is defined at 42800s USD and then further below at 41500-41700 USD region.

Most importantly, bitcoin has managed to reclaim the old levels of weakness at 43.1k USD with resistance at 44.1k USD yet to be tested.

BWAP support layer is given for the short-term price action at 43.2-43.6k USD.

As long as these levels said above are maintained, bitcoin has near targets 46300-46500 USD.

FEAR/GREED INDEX

The index shows a hand at 45 points on the scale. It is still marked as the fear territory.

This is the first successful “breakout” on the sentiment side to the upside since mid December. The sentiment is improving, the more, the higher the price of Bitcoin reaches.

As the current movements are full of momentum and upwards pace, it may make the bears feel trapped and in danger of liquidating their short positions, so they end up either cutting the losses or risk the liquidation. Such a short squeeze can potentially add even more to the upwards momentum and cause the price of Bitcoin to appreciate even more and faster.

The crowds are usually right in the middle of trends and usually wrong at the extremes. While this is not a timing indicator, it rarely ever pays off to counter trade the side of the market gaining on momentum.

For now, unless external and unprecedented events, Bitcoin seems to be set for the further upside recovery, less minor interruptions.

More details will be shared, as always, in exclusive video report.

Make Some Time for These Adorable and Awkward Baby Bird Photos | Audubon

Photographing birds can be difficult, with no shortage of early morning wake-ups, frustrating weather conditions, and uncooperative subjects. But capturing compelling images of young birds presents its own set of challenges. Chicks can be even more unpredictable than adults, have funny behaviors—peeping or begging for food for hours on end—and move suddenly, disrupting an otherwise beautifully in-focus image. Photographing parents with chicks also requires extra patience (feedings occur quickly and infrequently) and hypervigilance to any sign of stress in the parents or chicks. Taking pictures of baby birds from a responsible distance and with a telephoto lens is the best way to avoid causing harm to adults or young.

The 15 photos in this gallery safely and crisply capture chicks of various species in all their cute and fluffy glory. Although the images below didn’t snag any awards—check out the winners and Top 100 if you haven’t yet—they certainly warmed our hearts. Read on to learn more about each species’ nesting behavior and perhaps even utter a gleeful sound or two.

Feeling inspired by all the adorableness? Consider submitting your best birdy photos to the 2022 Audubon Photography Awards, which are open for submissions through March 9!

Common Merganser (above)

Bathed in soft morning sunlight, a female Common Merganser stands guard over her six small youngsters. Based on the emergence of their tail feathers, the chicks appear little more than two-weeks old, though they already closely resemble their mother with their gray bodies and cinnamon-colored heads. Common Mergansers lay up to 17 eggs, so it’s not uncommon to observe a parade of merganser chicks following their mom along the shore or across a freshwater lake in the summer. Mergansers nest exclusively in cavities and rely on old Pileated Woodpecker tree hollows or human-constructed nest boxes. The male helps little after mating, abandoning the female to incubate eggs and raise chicks alone. Young grow rapidly and can forage on their own after a week, eating mainly small aquatic insects before switching to catching fish. The mother sticks close to her chicks for several weeks to defend them from predators, including hawks and eagles.

Great Horned Owl

    Photo: Michael Cassella/Audubon Photography Awards

Photographer Michael Cassella captured this photo of a floofy young Great Horned Owl in fading sunlight, highlighting the streaked feathers and glowing yellow eyes of the chick. Great Horned Owls are the most widespread owls in North America, surviving in any habitat except the coldest arctic regions. The are known to nest in a wide variety of locations, from trees to barns to cliffs. Unlike most species in temperate climates, they also nest in winter, commonly laying eggs in December and January. The female incubates the eggs while her mate hunts to feed her and himself during the 30–37 day period. Though chicks don’t fly until almost seven weeks old, they can climb and scramble around at 40 days old. Good thing for this chick, which was blown out of its nest in high winds, according to Cassella.

Orchard Oriole

    Photo: Ann Pacheco/Audubon Photography Awards

Orchard chicks typically fledge, or leave the nest, after two weeks, but the family remains together at the breeding territory for several more weeks. Here, a male Orchard Oriole and its adult-size fledgling share a thin branch as the father places a morsel of food in the youngster’s open bill. Though the fledgling’s bright greenish-yellow plumage matches that of the female Orchard Oriole, the feeding behavior helps identify this as a juvenile bird. Orchard Orioles eat a variety of foods ranging from berries and insects to the nectar from flowers or hummingbird feeders. Females build hanging, basket-like nests of woven grass and plant fibers, where she lays 4-6 pale blue eggs. Common in the Midwest and southern United States, Orchard Orioles breed early, wrapping up chick-rearing by early August. Males depart for Central and South America first, while females and juveniles forage together for at least four more weeks before starting their southern migration.

Great Black-backed Gull

    Photo: Michael Weinstein/Audubon Photography Awards

Don’t mess with Great Black-backed Gulls: They are surprisingly fierce predators, able to swallow small mammals and adult birds as big as Atlantic Puffins whole. Fortunately for any potential prey, this small downy chick won’t be swallowing anything that large for some time. Instead, when hungry, the young gull chick will peck at the red spot on the lower bill of the adult, stimulating the adult to regurgitate a tasty meal. Nearly extirpated by the feather industry and egg collectors during the 19th century, the Great Black-backed Gull population rebounded to numbers exceeding historic estimates, in part due to anthropogenic food sources and discarded bait from commercial fishing. The largest gull in the world, Great Black-backed Gulls winter along the entire eastern coast of North America but only breed in coastal areas stretching from North Carolina to Maritime Canada.

Common Gallinule

    Photo: Lyssa Koo/Audubon Photography Awards

A tiny Common Gallinule chick uses it already-large feet to navigate its way across a cluster of dinner-plate-size lily pads. Mostly covered in sooty down, the chick has featherless tips on its wings, called “spurs,” that help it climb into the nest and grab onto vegetation. Common Gallinules practice cooperative breeding, where a female and one or more of her daughters sometimes share a male and raise young together. Pairs can raise two broods each year, often with juveniles from the first brood helping chick-sit and feed young from the second brood. Not quite as secretive as other species in the rail family, Common Gallinules frequent wetlands and marshy areas in the eastern and southern United States, breeding as far north as parts of Canada. The widespread destruction of wetlands has caused the Common Gallinule to decline across much of its range.

Western Grebe

    Photo: Krisztina Scheeff/Audubon Photography Awards

The red eye and vibrant yellow bill of this adult Western Grebe might normally steal the show—but not when three downy gray chicks are hitching a ride. Photographer Krisztina Scheeff described snapping this image at a fortuitous time: All three chicks eagerly reached out simultaneously as a parent approached with a fishy mealNative to freshwater lakes in western North America, Western Grebes and the closely related Clark’s Grebes are perhaps best known for their enthusiastic courtship displays. The birds perform elaborate dance moves, standing vertically, their long, elegant necks extended, and running across the water. In South America, the Hooded Grebe takes these moves to a whole new level

Virginia Rail

Two tiny, black Virginia Rail chicks forage in the green stubs of emerging grass. Like many rails, Virginia Rails inhabit shallow wetlands with tall grass and rushes that provide protective cover and ample foraging opportunities for snails, crayfish, insects, and small fish. Both parents construct the main nest where females lay 4–13 eggs, but pairs also build a secondary nests to use as extra space for feeding or brooding chicks. These “dummy” nests can also come in handy as backups if rain floods the main nest site. Chicks leave the nest within several days of hatching, but parents continue to brood the chicks at night, until they thermoregulate on their own. Both parents feed chicks until they are a few weeks old. Looking closely, you can see a worm—freshly delivered by the adult—hanging out of the central Virginia Rail chick’s bill.

Eastern Kingbird

    Photo: Xianwei Zeng/Audubon Photography Awards

Eastern Kingbirds cover a wide range of North America, breeding as far north as Canada, where the photographer captured this adorable scene. During the summer breeding season, Eastern Kingbirds primarily eat insects, like the small praying mantis an adult Eastern Kingbird prepares to feed its fledgling in this image. Because of their insect-heavy diet, Eastern Kingbird chicks and adults regurgitate compact pellets of insect exoskeletons—the rough bits they can’t digest. Their diet switches to berries during migration and when wintering in tropical forests of South America. Although young can fly after two weeks, parents continue to feed them for more than a month after fledging.

Red-winged Blackbird

    Photo: Brian Rice/Audubon Photography Awards

This Red-winged Blackbird is the quintessential awkward adolescent, with white wisps of downy fluff and a characteristic large yellow gape—the fleshy area at the base of the bill. Somewhat of a generalist, Red-winged Blackbirds frequent uplands, wetlands, and semi-natural habitat lining agricultural fields. Females tuck their grassy nests into the crooks of trees and weave them into cattails and reeds. Hatched as a blind and mostly naked chick, this youngster was wholly dependent on its parents for the first 10 days, rapidly gaining weight and sprouting feathers before fledging. Still dependent on its parents for an additional two weeks after leaving the nest, the young Red-winged Blackbird in this photograph clings tightly to a reed stem until its next feeding.

Northern Flicker

Three gray heads of Northern Flicker youngsters poke their heads out of the side of a rough-barked tree, all three focused on an object to the left of the frame, out of sight. Their side profiles stand out sharply against the blurred green background.

Photographer Rowland Willis patiently hid behind a tree to capture this image of three red-shafted Northern Flicker chicks poking their heads out of their nest cavity. Though males do the heavy hammering, both parents work to create the cavities in dead trees where they lay eggs and rear their young. Unlike other woodpecker species, flickers use their bills to dig up ants and beetles from the ground to feed their chicks—no small feat when you have three nestlings to care for. Formerly classified as separate species, the red-shafted and yellow-shafted subspecies of Northern Flicker inhabit wooded areas in the western and eastern United States, respectively. Adult, and even juvenile red-shafted males sport a red malar stripe extending down from the bird’s bill below the eye; the lack of any red in the birds’ faces, even at this young age, suggests these are probably female nestlings.

Black Tern

    Photo: Sabrina Dao/Audubon Photography Awards

Wings outstretched, an adult Black Tern flutters in midair as it extends its bill with a single tiny fish to two begging young. Tern chicks remain in the nest for only a few days after hatching, and then hide in nearby vegetation, running out to the nest site with mouths open wide when parents arrive with food, as captured in this photo. With their dark plumage and preference for freshwater marshes, Black Terns are anomalous from other tern species identified by their bright white plumage along the ocean coasts. As with these other terns, the Black Tern’s pointed, agile wings help them swoop gracefully down to the water surface to capture fish or other prey, including moths. Black Terns breed in the northern United States and Canada—as well as Eastern Europe and Russia—and migrate to coastal areas in Central and South America and the western African coast for winter. Though they have declined substantially in North America due to conversion of their preferred marshy habitat, their wide range still makes them a species of low conservation concern globally

Sandhill Crane

    Photo: Nathan Arnold/Audubon Photography Awards

Here, an adult Sandhill Crane with its characteristic crimson-red mask stands guard over one fuzzy young chick, its tiny head barely peeping above the grass. A second chick helps keep watch from the adult’s back. Most Sandhill Cranes breed in the northern United States and Canada while wintering in southern states, but some populations live year-round in Cuba, Florida, and Mississippi. When migrating, they depend on critical stopover areas—the Platte River in Nebraska being one of the primary ones—to make their journeys. Sandhill Cranes have an elegant courtship ritual with eight unique displays that involve wing pumping, head bowing, and leaping into the air. They also mate for life, sticking together year-round. Sandhill Crane’s often build floating nests of dried grasses and sticks where females lay their two eggs. Covered in yellow down when they hatch, chicks leave the nest and even swim soon after hatching. Young, called colts because of their long legs, stick with adults up to 10 months, even accompanying parents on their fall migration.

Common Loon

Photo: Katherine Sayn Wittgenstein/Audubon Photography Awards

After a vigorous feeding session, this downy Common Loon chick curled up on its parent’s back to nap. Common Loons nest on lakes throughout Canada and the northern edge of the United States, though only bodies larger than 250 acres can support more than one breeding pair. Loons are more attached to a territory than a mate; during their long lifespan—up to 30 years—they will switch mates, sometimes even during the breeding season. Common Loons struggle to walk on land, so females build nests close to the lake edge and typically lay two eggs. Within hours of hatching, Common Loon chicks—covered in sooty down—enter the water and start swimming. Parents stay with the chicks for up to 12 weeks after hatching to continue feeding, teach them to dive and forage, and, yes, even offer free rides.

A large Anhinga chick, covered in clean white down and half the size of its parent, sits in a nest built of sticks and twigs. Snuggled close to the adult, the chick imitates its parent’s posture, curving its neck and looking upward. A thick lump in the throat of the youngster suggests a recent feeding. Anhingas live year-round in parts of Florida, and make short, partial migrations between breeding areas in the southern United States and Florida, Louisiana, and Mexico to winter. Master swimmers, Anhingas dive underwater and capture prey by stabbing fish with their long, dagger-like bills. Anhinga feathers lack waterproofing, making them heavier and helping them dive deeper and spend more time stalking prey. Like their cormorant relatives, Anhingas stand upright with outstretched wings to dry the waterlogged feathers after foraging, a common sight in protected water bodies or close to the coast.

Northern Mockingbird

    Photo: Julie Mackinnon/Audubon Photography Awards

Perched on a backyard fence, a Northern Mockingbird parent prepares to place a single food item in its young fledgling’s open mouth. Similar scenes can be witnessed across the country each spring and summer. Northern Mockingbird chicks fledge after just 12 days, but they still depend on food from their parents for a few more weeks before they’re ready to survive on their own. Parents feed young chicks piecemeal, bringing individual spiders, grasshoppers, and butterflies initially, and then a higher proportion of berries as they get older. Even with this extended chick-rearing time, Northern Mockingbirds can raise up to six broods each year, though three or four broods are most common in northern climates. Despite Northern Mockingbirds being widespread and relatively abundant throughout the United States, capturing this feeding was a challenge for photographer Julie Mackinnon. Careful to avoid disturbing the flighty youngster, she waited by an open window in her house to capture this crisp shot.
