General Fortean’s secrets are revealed in Gamma Flight #4 preview | GamesRadar+

As Al Ewing’s Immortal Hulk races toward its finale, spin-off limited series Gamma Flight also heads toward its conclusion, with Marvel Comics releasing a preview of Gamma Flight #4, the penultimate issue.

Written by Ewing and Crystal Frasier with art from Lan Medina and Antonia Fabela, Gamma Flight focuses on the anti-Hulk taskforce of the same name, made up of Gamma-empowered characters such as Absorbing Man, Doc Sasquatch (the recently amalgamated form of Sasquatch and Doc Samson), and Del Frye, along with other allies including Puck of Alpha Flight, She-Hulk’s rival (and Absorbing Man’s wife) Titania, and America Chavez.

In this preview of Gamma Flight #4, we’re offered a glimpse back into the past of Dionne Fortean, the daughter of General Reg Fortean, as she finds out about her father’s transformation into a new Abomination-type Gamma villain. Initially the leader of Shadow Base, whose mission was to capture and experiment on the Hulk, General Fortean has been one of the main villains throughout the run of Immortal Hulk and its spin-offs.

And it’s not just readers who get some insight into Fortean’s experiments from his daughter, which include strange Gamma-related surgeries done to Hulk’s son Skaar and even mutating his own daughter. Dionne also spills the beans to Gamma Flight themselves, as they attempt to track down Emil Blonksy, the original Abomination (and just in time for that character’s return to the MCU in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and She-Hulk).

Here’s the preview of pages, including covers from Carlos Pacheco, Rafael Fonteriz and Marcio Manyz, and Patrick Zircher and Jesus Aburtov:

T notes: Boston’s fare-free bus test runs afoul of fed rule

THE CITY OF BOSTON’S  plan to launch a two-year test of fare-free buses on three MBTA bus routes may run afoul of federal rules limiting pilot projects to just six months.

Lynsey Heffernan, the MBTA’s assistant general manager for policy and transit planning, told a subcommittee of the transit authority’s board on Thursday that the Federal Transit Administration doesn’t allow pilot projects to extend beyond six months. At the six-month mark, she said, the federal agency requires transit authorities to either end the pilot or make it permanent.

Heffernan said the Federal Transit Administration provided some additional leeway during the height of COVID, but that no longer applies.

The city of Boston launched a fare-free pilot on the Route 28 bus roughly four months ago and the city council recently approved a proposal from Mayor Michelle Wu to spend $8 million of the city’s federal aid money to extend that pilot another two years and to add two more two-year pilots on the No. 23 and No. 29 buses.

“The MBTA has started discussions with the city regarding the vote by the city council and the mayor’s intention for the funds, including how those intended uses would be viewed by the FTA,” said Joe Pesaturo, a spokesman for the T.

Straus frowns on RMV giving T hiring help

Rep. William Straus, the House chair of the Legislature’s Transportation Committee, said he expressed concerns to the MBTA about using the database of the Registry of Motor Vehicles to help recruit additional bus drivers and doesn’t think it will happen again.

The MBTA plans to pare back service on 31 bus routes and the Mattapan trolley to better reflect the agency’s current driver staffing shortages. It is also taking a number of steps to hire more bus drivers, including reaching out to 30,000 commercial driver’s license holders using data supplied by the Registry of Motor Vehicles.

Using the Registry database, Straus said, means the MBTA could be soliciting drivers working for other public agencies, such as regional transit authorities across the state. He also said the Registry’s use of its database to help track down potential drivers for the T raises privacy issues.

“This just doesn’t leave a comfortable feeling,” he said. “Commercial driver’s license holders probably didn’t think they were signing up for a marketing campaign.”

Straus backs T on service cut approach

The House chair of the Legislature’s Transportation Committee said the MBTA’s decision to pare back service in response to a shortage of bus drivers makes sense.

Rep. William Straus said the T is currently dropping trips because it doesn’t have enough drivers, which inconveniences passengers who can’t be sure their bus will arrive. By cutting back service to roughly 90 percent of pre-COVID levels, Straus said, the T is actually improving service by assuring riders their bus will actually arrive as scheduled.

The business group A Better City on Wednesday decried the service cuts, calling them a step in the wrong direction. Rick Dimino, president and CEO of the business group, urged the T to do everything possible to restore service to pre-COVID levels. He even said it may make sense for the MBTA to seek a waiver from the Pacheco law to allow the T to bring in private bus operators to provide service.

Straus said he didn’t think A Better City’s call for privatizing bus service made sense. He said hiring private bus operators would take time, their buses are often not handicap accessible, and they  are facing the same challenges in finding drivers as the T.

“You couldn’t implement that quickly,” he said. “The private bus companies are facing the same issues as the T.”

Would a Black Hole Swallow Us if It Replaced the Sun?

The Solar System is the gravitationally bound system of the Sun and the planets that orbit it. But what if we replace the Sun with some other extreme space objects? First of all, all the planets will lose their light source. Some of the planets might even freeze and the Earth won’t be an exception.

Normally, black holes are so far away that we can’t see them even with a telescope. But something strange has happened and a black hole entered our Solar System and managed to replace our Sun! Let’s see what consequences this would have for us and the neighboring planets…

#brightside

TIMESTAMPS
Scenario1 00:00
Scenario 2 02:31
Scenario 3 05:11

SUMMARY
– SCENARIO 1: A black hole that came closer to us – on the spot where our Sun used to be! You can even see an accretion disk, and the background of the sky looks kinda distorted, which means it got really close;
– Our solar system doesn’t have light anymore. No light and no heat either, so even Mercury and Venus will probably get covered in ice pretty soon, not to mention Earth;
– The only salvation might come from the accretion disk that spins so fast it generates heat, but that’s too many chances to take;
– SCENARIO 2: The TV reports say our Sun is gone, and due to some mysterious events, the Moon is not orbiting the Earth anymore – it’s in the center of our solar system now!
– We’re not in the habitable zone anymore. The habitable zone is the distance from a star – in our case, the Sun – at which liquid water could exist on the surface of a planet;
-Without the Moon that peacefully travels close to our planet as it used to, we can see tides are getting lower incredibly fast;
– SCENARIO 3: a giant neutron star took the spot where our Sun used to be. It’s not something we’d recognize on our own – we just noticed something was different and the Sun kinda got smaller and weirder;
– This neutron star has gravity 2 billion times stronger than the one Earth has. This means our new “Sun” will pull all the planets in our solar system towards itself and eventually destroy them.

Hé lộ bí mật kế hoạch TT Trump sẽ trở lại Nhà Trắng nhiệm kỳ thứ 2 thế nào Cập Nhật bầu cử Mỹ 15/12

#tintuc24hol #tintuc

Everything Will Not Be OK. And That’s Perfectly Fine | Yoga Journal

Here’s the thing: We all want things to be OK. Of course we do! But (you knew there was a but)… at any given moment, things may not be OK. Even when they are for us (perhaps better than OK), for someone else they’re not. Intellectually, we understand this. However, emotionally, psychologically, spiritually—impulsively—we look for a workaround. A magic pill or secret password. The right SPF. A new diet or religion or hairstyle. Something to scroll or scrutinize; eat, drink, or buy.

I admire the pragmatism of Buddhism in this regard. Years ago, I joined my devoted Tibetan Buddhist friends, Wendy and Nick, at a lecture with a venerable lama named Ling Rinpoche, said to be the reincarnation of the Dalai Lama’s senior tutor in his past life. I was newly pregnant and terribly nauseous. The lecture hall at MIT where we gathered was impressive, with stadium seating and soaring glass windows. Still, I felt cloistered and queasy. Before the program began, a translator took to the stage and outlined some logistics, first in Tibetan and then in English. He identified the bathrooms and fire exits. He invited people to silence their phones.

“If you have a baby or small child…” he began.

I didn’t have either yet, but my consciousness was preemptively attuned to the advice that would follow.

“If the baby begins to cry … because this is what babies do … please step out of the room, calm the child, and then come back.”

I smiled at the pragmatism. This is what babies do. The lecture had not yet started, but already we were asked to cultivate this generous, compassionate, and unflinching attention to reality.

According to plan

We want things to be OK and to go according to plan, but the planet is melting, with coral bleaching from vivid to colorless, forests burning from lush to ash, and sea levels rising, rising, rising. Systemic racism is a public health crisis. Food insecurity affects one in five households with school-age children as I write this. The healthcare system is so inequitable that falling ill can bankrupt a person or family. Life can be lonely and short. Wildly unjust. Dangerous or devastating. It is still life.

What can we do about it?

First, we must acknowledge reality and allow ourselves our feelings without making them bad, broken, or wrong. Next, we must attempt to deal with what is happening in a compassionate and useful way, beginning with the present. We can also hold space for more than one feeling. Finally, begin again. This last point is the essential teaching of meditation mechanics. Each time our attention drifts, we start over. We come back. It’s a spectacularly convenient and simple practice (sometimes maddeningly so). And it’s applicable throughout life. Even when the big picture is disheartening, we know what to do with this one breath.

No magic pills

Some spiritual communities are vulnerable to losing their footing when it comes to how we can be OK in a moment of suffering. Part of this incongruence has to do with an inability to decipher between these meaningful practices and the wellness industrial complex with which they overlap. For instance, in trying to sell a product or service, it behooves a brand to suggest that it is the magic pill we need. If we use it, all will be well. If all is not well—the logic goes—it must be user error. Another risk is when spiritual ideas or practices are used “to sidestep personal, emotional ‘unfinished business,’ to shore up a shaky sense of self, or to belittle basic needs, feelings, and developmental tasks,” according to John Welwood, a prominent psychotherapist who coined the term spiritual bypassing, which is in plainer terms a defense mechanism and, when directed at others, a form of gaslighting.

Some signs of spiritual bypassing include:

Practice reality

With mindfulness we are not trying to bypass any aspect of the moment. In fact, the basic theory is that the best way to pragmatically address reality is to practice. We can use any aspect of the here and now to do this. One opportunity is, first, to consider when in your day are you most mindful? You might quickly jot a list. When are you most present in the moment and focused on what is actually happening rather than how you’d like things to be different? In contrast, when are you least present? What do you rush through, ignore, dash off, wish away, or worry ahead at the cost of experiencing the moment?

You probably notice that some activities land in both categories. This phenomenon happens a lot. Take coffee, for example. People often share how their morning coffee rituals can be habitual impulses possessing minimal awareness. Or they can be the complete opposite: deeply grounding routines that place them in the present moment with full, almost holy attention—to the aroma of the grinds, the feel of the mug in hand, and the sensory impressions throughout the house as the world wakes up around you. The sound of the coffeemaker! Even I, a devout tea drinker, love that sound.

How to make any routine a practice in mindfulness

If you don’t have time to meditate or you need to find a small respite in your day, choose anything you do regularly and turn it into practice. Here’s how.

This mindfulness practice through everyday activities doesn’t require altering a daily routine or adding time to an already full schedule. It merely requires a shift in awareness. We’re paying attention to life as it’s happening—the tiny, trivial stuff, as well as the momentous and meaningful. Of course, we can’t operate this way all the time. But it’s powerful and instructive to step out of autopilot and into awareness whenever we can.

By committing to the moment that is present and real—this cup of coffee, this sip of tea, this pose on our mat, this compassionate and clear-thinking breath within our busy day—we reconnect to a sense of steadiness and agency. We cannot guarantee what the next moment will be like, only that meeting it honestly is the best way forward.

COP26: Countries split over key emissions text in climate agreement

A group of more than 20 countries is pushing to remove the entire section of the draft COP26 climate agreement on reducing emissions.

Protest outside the COP26 compound. Photo: DrillOrDrop

The mitigation text includes a commitment to pursue efforts to limit world temperature increases to 1.5C, a central goal of COP26.

It also has a target to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 45% by 2030 and calls on countries to accelerate the phasing-out of coal and subsidies for fossil fuels.

These are critical parts of the draft text for many vulnerable nations and environmental groups who point to emissions from burning fossil fuels as a leading cause of climate change.

But Diego Pacheco, for the Like-Minded Developing Countries (LMDC), representing 22 countries, including China, India and Saudi Arabia, said today:

“We requested to the Presidency to remove completely that section on mitigation because they are trying to shift the responsibilities from the developed world to the developing world.”

He said developed countries had a greater historical responsibility for climate change but they were asking developing nationals to meet the same deadlines on emissions reduction.

This afternoon, the UN’s lead negotiator, Archie Young, said there were “very strongly divergent views on a number of elements”.

“There is not yet at this conference a consensus that we do need to collectively ramp up our ambition.”

Reference to fossil fuels has never until now appeared in a COP agreement.,

The EU climate policy chief, Frans Timmermans, said today the text on phasing out fossil fuel subsidies must stay in the final version. He said:

“Removing it would be an extremely, extremely bad signal”.

the UN secretary general, Antonio Guterres, said:

“promises ring hollow when the fossil fuels industry still receives trillions in subsidies.”

Mr Guterres told the AP news agency that COP26’s aim to limit temperature rise to 1.5C was “on life support”.

He said the COP26 summit would probably not see governments make pledges to cut greenhouses gas by enough to keep 1.5C in sight. But he said:

“Every country, every city, every company, every financial institution must radically, credibly and verifiably reduce their emissions and decarbonise their portfolios starting now”.

Earlier today, the COP26 president, Alok Sharma, said “time is running out” on an agreement. He said:

“We still have a monumental challenge ahead of us but collectively we have no choice but to rise to that challenge and strain every sinew to achieve a timely outcome.”

Also today, a new grouping pledged to phase out oil and gas. See DrillOrDrop report
