Tomato âSungoldâ
If you can only grow one tomato, make it the exceptional cherry tomato âSungoldâ. Possibly the sweetest tomato ever bred, every juicy fruit is a burst of intense flavour. If sunshine had a flavour, it would taste like âSungoldâ! These little golden gems are versatile, being ideal for salads, roasting or just eating straight off the plant â you wonât be able to resist. As âSungoldâ only needs to ripen to orange, this cordon variety is great for growing outdoors in a sunny spot.
Sow: indoors from February to April, or buy as young plants. Harvest: July to October.

Climbing Bean âCobraâ
Climbing bean âCobraâ is our favourite of all climbing beans. This delicious French bean is an exceptional cropper, producing huge yields of tender, flavoursome beans over an incredibly long season. Its pretty lilac flowers also make it a decorative addition to the allotment or veg patch! Once blanched the beans freeze very well, so any surplus can easily be frozen for later use.
Sow: indoors in May or June, or buy as young plants. Harvest: June to October.

Lettuce âLittle Gemâ
You canât go wrong with the crisp, sweet hearts of âLittle Gemâ. The perfect base for a salad or garnish for a sandwich, this cos lettuce is well known for its reliability and flavour. For a continual supply, sow successionally between March and September, and if protected from frosts by a cold frame, âLittle Gemâ will keep cropping well into winter. No-dig veg guru Charles Dowding says: âIt takes two to three months to develop a heart. Space closer at 15cm. Or, space at 22cm and pick as a leaf lettuce â I find this works really well.â
Sow: outdoors from March to August, or buy as young plants. Harvest: June to October (and later if protected from frosts).

Courgette âSure Thingâ
Poor pollination is something that can really limit your courgette crop, especially if you only have a small number of plants. Solve this problem with courgette âSure Thingâ, whose fruits will develop whether or not they have been successfully pollinated, resulting in high yields of glossy dark green zucchini. You may even enjoy an earlier harvest since you arenât reliant on warm, dry conditions to tempt out pollinators. Forming neat, compact plants, âSure Thingâ is ideal for small spaces, and also shows strong resistance to powdery mildew to further extend the harvest season. A great crop is a sure thing!

Chard âBright Lightsâ
Paint your plot a myriad of colours with this gorgeous rainbow chard. Rainbow chard is a crop that is difficult to find in the shops â and if you do, itâs expensive! Chard âBright Lightsâ is a prolific but stunningly beautiful variety that is sure to become the centre of attention on the plot and on the plate. Long, strong stems in a myriad of vibrant colours bear large, glossy, deep green or purple leaves that are packed with vitamins, minerals and iron. The chopped stems are great stir-fried or used as a celery substitute while the leaves are used in the same way as spinach. A sheer joy to cook with!

Onion âSettonâ
Onion âSturonâ has long been one of the best-loved of all spring-planting onions on account of its outstanding reliability and flavour. However, recent breeding has taken âSturonâ and improved it even further, ramping up yields, storage potential and uniformity â and onion âSettonâ was born. With a great, strong flavour, round shape and long shelf life, this RHS award-winning onion is a a show bench favourite that will excel in all your kitchen needs.
Plant: March or April. Harvest: August to September.

Leek âAutumn Mammothâ
Autumn Mammoth varieties such as âAutumn Mammoth 2â (âSnowstarâ) produce huge, thick stems of crisp white flesh that are a hit both on the show bench and on the plate. No-dig veg guru Charles Dowding says: âAutumn Mammoth grows long, pale shanks, even without earthing up. It is always one of my highest-yielding varieties, tastes good and withstands moderate, but not severe frost.â
Sow: outdoors in March or April. Harvest: September to March.

Beetroot âBoltardyâ
Beetroot âBoltardyâ is a top quality, bolt-resistant variety that can be sown earlier than any other beetroot and holds an RHS Award of Garden Merit. Charles Dowding says, âFor the very earliest, âBoltardyâ is excellent, providing sweet beets by late spring â one of the first fresh vegetables of the seasonâ. Beetroot can be easier to grow than other root veg such as carrots, as they donât succumb to problems like carrot root fly. The leaves can also be eaten in the same way as spinach â so no part of the plant is wasted!

Pope Francis has expressed his closeness to the victims of Thursdayâs traffic accident in Mexicoâs Chiapas state that caused the death of at least 54 people, and numerous injuries.
Mario BĂșcaro, Guatemalaâs ambassador to Mexico, confirmed that the majority were Guatemalan migrants and that the rest came from other Central American countries.
In a telegram sent Dec. 10, the Holy Father said that he prays for the eternal rest of the deceased and expressed his deep sorrow to the families of the victims.
âPope Francis, deeply saddened to learn the painful news of the traffic accident that occurred in Chiapas, which has caused the death of more than 50 migrants and many injured, offers his prayers for the eternal rest of the deceased.â
The Holy Father also expressed âhis deep sorrow to the families of the victims, together with his heartfelt expressions of closeness and consolation, of lively solicitude and desire for the prompt recovery of the injured.â
In the message signed by Archbishop MartĂnez and Father Gilberto HernĂĄndez GarcĂa, who is in charge of social ministry, the archdiocese said on Twitter that âWe lift up our prayers to God, rich in mercy, and in consolation for these brothers of ours who have lost their lives in such a way. We also pray to God for those who have been injured in this accident, particularly those in more serious condition. We ask the Lord to look at them with compassion, strengthen them from within, and that, in his will, restore their lives and health.â
They also expressed their condolences and âsolidarity with their familiesâ and encouraged them to âput your trust in God, who remains with you in this time of sorrow and death. We ask our Mother of Guadalupe to take you into her loving arms.â
âWe call on the authorities to determine the facts regarding this unfortunate incident and establish the mechanisms so that situations like these are not repeated.â
The Governor of Chiapas, Rutilio EscandĂłn, expressed his solidarity with the victims and said that âresponsibilities will be determined in accordance with the law.â

A new variant cover for She-Hulk shows off some of the hero’s most sensational and savage costumes.
The cover, illustrated by Russell Dauterman, depicts more than a dozen of the hero’s different outfits, from the torn clothes of her first appearance to her cosmic Avengers attire. The cover is the latest in Dauterman’s series of variants that capture the ever-evolving looks of Marvel’s iconic heroes. The artist has also drawn similarly themed variants for titles such as Avengers Forever, Inferno and Excalibur.
Jennifer Walters was introduced to comic book audiences as the cousin of Bruce Banner in the pages of 1980’s Savage She-Hulk #1 by Stan Lee and John Buscema. After a mobster shot Jen, Bruce used his gamma-radiated blood for a transfusion, which not only saved Jen’s life but also unintentionally gave her a form of his Hulk powers. Though Marvel created She-Hulk to secure the copyright to the name and prevent CBS from creating a female-led spinoff of the Incredible Hulk TV show without its involvement, the character quickly took on a life of her own, joining the Avengers and Fantastic Four. By the time she helmed her second series, Sensational She-Hulk, Jen had become a fun-loving superhero with her own unique voice — one she occasionally used to break her comics’ fourth wall.
In the ensuing decades, She-Hulk has appeared in nearly every corner of the Marvel Universe, which Dauterman’s art depicts. She has taken on a brutish appearance in recent years, rejoining the Avengers as their resident powerhouse. Unlike prior incarnations of the character, this “Hulk” did not retain Jen’s intelligence and spoke in stilted dialogue. However, after going undercover in the Winter Guard as the Winter Hulk, Jen dispelled the excessive radiation she had gained from her body, reverting her to her traditional status quo.
Marvel’s current She-Hulk series comes from writer Rainbow Rowell and artist RogĂȘ AntĂŽnio and focuses on the titular hero’s efforts to focus on her personal life. In the book’s debut issue, Jen’s first night in her new apartment was interrupted by the return of Jack of Hearts, a fellow Avenger whom Jen thought had died years ago. Moving forward, Jack will be a recurring character in She-Hulk, Fantastic Four and Silver Surfer: Rebirth.
Outside of her solo series, Jen will be a significant player in the upcoming Fantastic Four storyline, “The Reckoning War.” The book is written by Dan Slott and drawn by Carlos Pacheco and Rachael Stott, and picks up plot points planted by Slott during his time writing She-Hulk in the 2000s. The story centers on a secret war that took place in Marvel’s history and how the repercussions of that war impact the modern tapestry of its universe.
She-Hulk #4, written by Rainbow Rowell and illustrated by RogĂȘ AntĂŽnio, goes on sale April 13 from Marvel Comics.
