Darkseid & Reverse-Flash Share a Dark Power DC Wants You to Forget

Two of the most sinister villains in the DC Comics universe are Darkseid and Reverse-Flash. Darkseid is a threat to everyone in the multiverse during his search for the Anti-Life equation, often combating New Genesis, Superman, and the rest of the Justice League. Meanwhile, Reverse-Flash, aka Eobard Thawne, is on a constant mission to humiliate and destroy Barry Allen and all of his allies. While these villains don’t often cross paths, they share a remarkably similar trait.

Whether it was Infinite CrisisBlackest NightFinal Crisis, or Flashpoint, the early 2000s marked some of DC Comics’ gravest events ever. While they may not exchange much dialogue, Darkseid and Reverse-Flash each share roles as monumental antagonists during this period. In Grant Morrison, J.G. Jones, Carlos Pacheco, Marco Rudy, and Doug Mahnke’s Final Crisis, Darkseid attempts to control reality and destroy DC’s most famous heroes. In Geoff Johns and Andy Kubert’s Flashpoint, the final event before the New 52 comics, Reverse-Flash and Flash fight their most epic battle in a different universe with the fan-favorite Thomas Wayne Batman.

During the final pages of Final Crisis, Grant Morrison details some notes regarding his thoughts on Darkseid. He comments that everything Apokolips’ tyrannical leader touches “rots in his hand.” While the methods of doing so are different than Darkseid’s, Reverse-Flash can also disintegrate matter. During Flashpoint, Barry reveals Eobard can “deteriorate objects with a touch,” an ability granted by the “Negative Speed Force.” Interestingly, Darkseid and Reverse-Flash have these over-powered abilities but rarely use them.

In Flashpoint, Reverse-Flash uses his matter deterioration powers on Barry’s costume towards the end. Essentially, his red lightning reduces matter to ash. However, before readers can see this in its full effect, Thomas Wayne stabs Reverse-Flash through the heart. Aside from this moment, Reverse-Flash never really does this throughout comic book history. It’s most likely because it would kill any opponents in seconds, so writers choose to leave it out of stories. However, there could be more to it than this. Barry Allen says it himself, “for every positive, there is a negative.” Like Barry, Eobard must gain speed to use his Negative Speed Force energy. If Flash needs to have peak momentum to access his most damaging attacks, it’s likely Eobard’s powers work the same way, and Barry only overestimates his villain to play it safe.

When it comes to Darkseid, his ability to disintegrate objects is more straightforward. He draws power from the cosmic energy field known as the “Omega Effect,” which grants him access to his incredibly destructive omega beams and blasts. These discharges are so powerful even Wonder Woman’s invulnerable bracelets have no defensive power against Darkseid’s omega beams. The only characters who have persisted after Darkseid’s beams hit them are Superman, Doomsday, and Yuga Khan (Darkseid’s father). Interestingly enough, Batman also gets hit by Darkseid’s beams at the end of Final Crisis. However, because DC would never kill off the Batman, Darkseid’s Omega energy mysteriously sends Bruce to the Stone Age.

If a writer were to put them through the ultimate test, it seems Reverse-Flash and Darkseid could literally destroy anything, including heroes. Both characters are some of the most threatening characters in all comic books for a reason. Time will only tell if DC Comics shows Reverse-Flash disintegrating someone the same way Darkseid does.

Chocolatito-Martinez Weigh-In Results; Main Event Subject To Same-Day Weigh-In – Boxing News

SAN DIEGO – Julio Cesar Martinez still has a fight but with plenty of work left ahead.

The WBC flyweight titlist failed on two official attempts to make the 115-pound contracted limit for his scheduled 12-round junior bantamweight fight with legendary former four-division champion Roman ‘Chocolatito’ Gonzalez. Martinez weighed 116.4 on his second try, nearly two hours after weighing a beefy 117 pounds during the official commission weigh-in Friday morning.

Nicaragua’s Gonzalez (50-3, 41KOs) weighed 114.pounds on the first try for Saturday’s DAZN main event, which airs live from Pechanga Arena in San Diego.

As of Friday afternoon, the fight will proceed though with the stipulation of a same-day weigh-in to take place 9:00 a.m. local time Saturday. Per California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) rules, Martinez (18-1, 14KOs; 2ND) must weigh no heavier than 10% above the contracted limit—126.5 pounds—to avoid a mandatory fine. CSAC rules call for an immediate cancelation if a fighter weighs more than 15% above the contracted limit—132.25 pounds, as it relates to this fight.  

Mexico City’s Martinez accepted the fight on six weeks’ notice, replacing lineal/WBA junior bantamweight champion Juan Francisco ‘El Gallo’ Estrada (42-3, 28KOs) who tested positive for Covid in January. Martinez has reigned as WBC flyweight titlist since December 2019, but whose title reign has been plagued by injuries, illness and past struggles to shrink down to the flyweight limit.

The hope of taking a fight three pounds above his normal weight would alleviate that concern, though Martinez still fell miserably short. As a result, he is no longer eligible to claim the WBC Diamond junior bantamweight title which is now only at stake for Gonzalez. The significance behind the trinket is that the WBC was prepared to order the winner to next face Estrada, who remains the recognized WBC “Franchise” title.

Gonzalez hoped to avenge a controversial split decision defeat to Estrada in their terrific rematch last March 13 at American Airlines Center in Dallas. The fight came more than eight years after their equally memorable November 2012 junior flyweight title fight, where Gonzalez won by unanimous decision.

A British man has died after his plane span out of control and crashed down in to fields during a training flight in southern Spain

The 26-year-old is believed to have died instantly after the light aircraft came down in a field by a main road near the town of Pinzon, 25 miles south of Seville.

The Briton, who has not been named, was the sole occupant of the plane, which had taken off from nearby Jerez Airport on Wednesday.

Local reports say he was a pupil at Fly-in-Spain, one of the two training schools based at the airport.

The tragedy occurred around 12.15pm on Wednesday. A witness phoned the emergency services to say the plane had crashed onto farmland 300 metres from the SE-9020 road which runs between Pinzon and the nearby town of Los Palacios and Villafranca.

Police, firefighters and paramedics were mobilised but could do nothing to save the pilot, who was pronounced dead at the scene after his body was removed from the wreckage of his light aircraft.

Footage showed it spinning dangerously out of control as it plunged towards the ground and an onlooker yelled: ‘It’s going to crash.’

Fly-in-Spain, which describes itself on social media as one of the leading flight training schools in southern Spain with ‘over two decades of consecutive operations and satisfied clients’ has yet to make any official comment.

Footage showed the plane spinning dangerously out of control as it plunged towards the ground and an onlooker yelled: ‘It’s going to crash.’

Separate investigations are now underway, one by the Civil Guard which is the police force probing the accident, and another by the Civil Aviation Accident and Incident Investigation Commission (CIAIAC) which is the Spanish national agency responsible for air traffic investigation.

A spokesman for a regional government-run emergency services co-ordination centre confirmed: ‘The sole occupant of a light aircraft has died after his plane crashed over a rural area near to Utrera in the municipality of Seville.

‘The accident occurred at 12.15pm on Wednesday with a witness alerting the emergency services to the spot where the plane came down which was a field 300 metres from the SE-9020 road near the town of Pinzon.

‘Paramedics were mobilised along with firefighters, Civil Guard, and an environmental officer who was in the area when the accident happened.’

The plane is said to have started leaking fuel after coming down, sparking a fire risk which the emergency responders also had to deal with.

Police sources told local media the flight had been registered and previously programmed in line with standard procedure.

In May last year British expat Paul Lowry died after his plane plunged into the sea off a beach near the Spanish port city of Cartagena.

The 66-year-old, originally from Smethwick near Birmingham and a former worker at Birmingham’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital before he moved to Spain with his wife Anne, was described at the time as an experienced pilot.

Javier Martinez Pacheco, head of flights at Totana Airdrome where Paul took off from shortly before his light aircraft came down, said at the time: ‘He was a very experienced pilot who had been flying for many years.

‘He was also a very serious pilot who never did anything silly with his plane when he was in it.

‘You know there’s risk attached to a hobby like flying but what’s happened is obviously very regrettable and tragic.

‘We are mourning the loss of a companion and suffering with his family and feeling absolutely devastated.

‘Other people were going to fly with him but ended up staying to do maintenance work and he went out alone.’

He added: ‘It appears he could have come across a bank of coastal marine fog in an area where it doesn’t normally form and got into problems because of that.’

In December 2017 a former rally champion credited as Colin McRae’s mentor died in a horror air crash at Mutxamel Aerodrome near the Costa Blanca capital of Alicante.

A damning report later concluded Aberdeen-born tycoon Donald Milne performed banned acrobatic stunts and also failed to respect the normal aerodrome circuit before coming in to land and smashing into the back of a helicopter he had not seen.

Mr Milne was a well-known figure on the motorsport circuit, where both his sons Quintin and Freddie have competed.

He lent Colin McRae, who died himself in a helicopter crash in Lanark in 2007, cars early in the future world champion’s rally career before he went on to win two British titles and the 1995 world title.

Seward Park Neighbors Come Together to Save an ‘Exceptional’ Tree | South Seattle Emerald

You can see the tall western red cedar tree before turning onto South Mayflower Street in Seattle’s Seward Park neighborhood. Known as “May,” the tree is one of the tallest on the street. But one cannot appreciate May in full until you stand beside its thick trunk that splits into three, its branches soaring high above.

To the right of May is a house that’s under construction. Beside the tree is construction material: planks of lumber with stacks of heavy rebar on top. 

With a diameter of 44.5 inches, May is considered an “exceptional tree,” according to standards set by the Seattle Department of Construction & Inspections (SDCI). An SDCI list of tree species that could be considered exceptional includes the Western red cedar, among many others, like western hemlock, madrona, and red alder. An exceptional tree is any tree that has “significant value due to their size and species.” These are considered protected, so they cannot be cut down or, in the event of construction, require a permit to be cut down. 

“Her name is May, after South Mayflower Street,” said Mordo De Jaen, a neighbor of the tree. “And she’s been crying out, ‘Mayday, Mayday!’”

De Jaen, who is 91, says he believes the tree is older than he is. He’s lived in the neighborhood since 1959 and has watched May grow over the years. De Jaen is admittedly fond of the tree, and he’s not alone. He is one of many neighbors who came together to save May earlier this year when a permit to remove the tree was submitted to the City. 

When the space around May’s surrounding footbed was covered in construction debris in December, a neighbor reached out to The Last 6,000 campaign, which keeps track of old-growth trees in Seattle with a diameter of more than 30 inches. 

The campaign gets its name from the City’s “2016 Seattle Tree Canopy Assessment” report, which found that Seattle was home to 6,338 old-growth trees. The South End’s tree canopy has one of the sparsest canopies in the city, which has adverse health effects for the community. 

Urban trees help store carbon, clean the air from pollution, provide oxygen, and provide shade, which in turn helps reduce heat island effect (urban areas that are hotter than others due to development). A study by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Forest Service calculated that trees help save more than 850 human lives a year and prevent 670,000 incidences of acute respiratory symptoms.

Meanwhile, Seattle’s 2016 report found that the more People of Color there are in a neighborhood, the fewer trees there are. Consequently, residents of historically majority-BIPOC neighborhoods, such as South Park, have been found to have lower life expectancy than their more affluent and white neighbors toward the north end of the city.

Seward Park’s robust 120 acres of trees provides the South End with a tree canopy full of old-growth trees native to the Pacific Northwest. Still, outside of the neighborhood, the South End residential area’s canopy is sparse, and potentially getting sparser in the face of growing gentrification and development.

Sandy Shettler, a volunteer for The Last 6,000 campaign, lives in Green Lake, but when she heard about the giant western red cedar, she jumped into action, knowing how difficult it can be to protect a tree in Seattle. “South of the ship canals, the tree canopy is so sparse — except for Seward Park — that this has echoes of a lot of other social movements,” said Shettler.

While the City of Seattle and SDCI have standards for what is considered an “exceptional tree,” and legally a developer is supposed to apply to remove such trees, it’s up to the developer to self-report. So exceptional trees can be removed illegally without the City ever knowing about them, Shettler says. 

If a developer applies to remove a tree, the City sends one of its two arborists to review the tree for disease or whether it’s a possible risk or liability before approving its removal or not.

Caryn Swan Jamero, another concerned neighbor of May in Seward Park, called the City to inquire about May in January. When she received a voicemail from Jason Shirley, an SDCI inspector, who said the tree was going to be removed once the permit was approved, the neighbors united and sent SDCI complaints about the debris and protests about May’s removal. 

“As I went around and talked to the neighbors, there was not a single neighbor that said, ‘I don’t care if the tree is cut down,’” Jamero said. 

Since then, the neighborhood has been on high alert, watching over the safety and survival of the tree. 

SDCI has not responded to the Emerald’s request for comment. 

However, the protests seem to have worked. Scott Alderson, co-owner of Revive Realty, the developer building a new single-family home where the previous one burned down, assured the Emerald that new paperwork had been resubmitted with the City and the tree would no longer be removed.

Still, Shettler says May’s story is not uncommon, and she hopes the City finds a better way to regulate exceptional and protected trees. She’s currently advocating for the passage of Council Bill 120207, which would require any tree service provider to be registered with the City and would therefore, hopefully, make compliance with the cutting of exceptional trees more streamlined, and reduce the amount of illegal cuttings that occur.

“When [people] lose a tree, there’s actually an emotional impact,” Shettler said. “Everyone around that tree shows signs of grieving. … It’s traumatic for people to lose a tree.”
