Campi Flegrei (Phlegrean Fields) (Italy): After the water in the Averno crater lake turned red last week because of an unusually strong algae bloom, stretches of the sea in the Gulf of Pozzuoli also turned red recently, presumably from the same phenomenon.
Such algae blooms of the Averno lake usually happen in winter, when deep water is warmer than at the surface and rises along with algae that can multiply explosively. However, this year’s algae bloom, especially its extension into the adjacent open sea seems to be much stronger than what residents can recollect from recent memory. Since the status of the Campi Flegrei has been on a first level of increased unrest for a while, many residents are concerned about a possible connection. A suspicion voiced is that the algae bloom in the sea could be due to an increased heat flow at the sea floor, as a result of increased volcanic degassing.
São Jorge (Azores Islands, Portugal): ) The seismic swarm under the island’s northwestern rift zone has decreased a lot during the past days, but it is still ongoing at lower levels.
Weak inflation also continued to be registered, which is why the official alert level remains at the second highest level of V4.

Dukono (Halmahera): Explosive activity continues. Volcanic Ash Advisory Center (VAAC) Darwin warned about a volcanic ash plume that rose up to estimated 7000 ft (2100 m) altitude or flight level 070 and is moving at 20 kts in NE direction.

Kilauea (Hawai’i): ) The lava lake has dropped, but remains active. This follows the usual pattern of recent deflation at the summit of the volcano and will likely revert to inflation and rising lava lake levels in the near future.
The volcano observatory reported: “The summit eruption of Kīlauea Volcano, within Halemaʻumaʻu crater, continues at this time. The level of the active lava lake within Halema‘uma‘u has dropped by several meters since 6:00 p.m. yesterday, in association with summit deflation and a decline in volcanic tremor.

Poas (Costa Rica): ) An eruption occurred yesterday (7 April) morning at 2.42 a.m. local time from the volcano’s crater northern area. The event lasted about 3 minutes and generated a steam plume that rose 500 m from the crater to approx. 3200 m altitude.
There was apparently no warning for the eruption, which came without detectable precursors, such as increases seismic activity, an increase in temperature at the fumaroles or other geophysical changes. During other eruptions of Poás, the temperature at the northern crater rim’s fumaroles often had been seen increasing from 100 to 900°C, volcanologist Javier Pacheco from Costa Rica’s monitoring agency OVSICORI-UNA explained in an interview with La Nación. This had not been the case yesterday. As the eruption seems to have not involved any new magma, but almost purely ejected steam, it was likely a phreatic (steam-driven) explosion.

It is actually rather typical that such phreatic explosions occur with little or no warning at an active volcano: Fluids, water and gasses, contained in the subsurface system of cracks and cavities normally form a circulating system that allows heat and excess gasses that can no longer be stored in solution to be transferred to the surface, where degassing takes place, often in the form of fumaroles or hot crater lakes.
