Hawaii Baptist Academy was awarded its eighth consecutive win for “Best in State” at the annual 54th High School Journalism Awards ceremony Thursday.

The school’s newspaper, the Eagle Eye, took home a $200 award. Following in second place was Sacred Hearts Academy, which was awarded $100, then Moana­lua High School in third place, taking home $50.

“It was a welcome surprise,” said Connor Malinger, a senior and the editor in chief of the Eagle Eye.

Students spent their after-­school hours working on contributions to the Eagle Eye, and it was a relief to see it all pay off, Malinger said.

Malinger also took first place in the best column/review writing and best photo essay categories. He hopes to continue writing for the school newspaper in college, although he doesn’t plan on majoring in journalism in the future.

Malinger’s faculty adviser, Eunice Sim, later said that Malinger plans to attend Lehigh University in Pennsylvania and study integrated business and engineering.

Justin Mayeshiro, a senior and the photographer/video­grapher for the Eagle Eye, was voted most valuable staffer at the publication. He also won the best video and best action photo awards.

“A lot of people would like to know that their work means something to other people,” Mayeshiro said. “So I think that awards given out really help to recognize people that worked hard on their projects and deserve the affirmation.”

Winning Best in State is always welcome, especially considering the number of quality high school newspapers in Hawaii, Sim said.

At the beginning of Thursday’s awards ceremony, student speaker Shane Kaneshiro from McKinley High School spoke about a bill in the Legislature that the McKinley journalism program has been following. House Bill 1848 would prohibit school administrators from censoring students’ reporting. It would also provide legal immunity for state agencies and employees for students’ exercise of press freedoms.

Kaneshiro and the rest of the McKinley journalism students submitted written and verbal testimony supporting HB 1848, and Kaneshiro encouraged other students and advisers to support the bill as well.

Hawaii Baptist Academy, Mid-Pacific Institute and Sacred Hearts Academy were all recognized in each of the division categories, including writing, photo, design and online. The first-place winners in each category were awarded $200.

Sim appreciates that her students sometimes struggle but admires their persistence.

“The most enjoyable part of the job is to be able to see my students grow and also discover what they’re good at, or work on getting better at what they think they like,” Sim said.

Complete casting has been revealed for the previously announced Shakespeare in the Park production of Richard III, directed by Slave Play Tony nominee Robert O’Hara and starring Danai Gurira in the title role. Performances will begin on June 17 and run through July 17 with ppening night set for June 30. The series will celebrate its 60th anniversary when it returns to the Delacorte Theater this summer.

In addition to Gurira, Richard III will feature Wyatt Cirbus as the Prince of Wales, Sanjit De Silva as Buckingham, Sam Duncan as the Duke of York, Monique Holt as the Duchess of York, Gregg Mozgala as King Edward IV/Richmond, Paul Niebanck as George, Michael Potts as Lord Stanley, Ariel Shafir as Lord Hastings, Heather Alicia Simms as Queen Elizabeth, Ali Stroker as Anne, Sharon Washington as Queen Margaret and Daniel J. Watts as Catesby Ratcliffe. The ensemble will include Maleni Chaitoo, Thaddeus Fitzpatrick, Skyler Gallun, Sarah Nina Hayon, Matthew Jeffers, Matt Monaco, Xavier Pacheco, Marcus Rae Perez, Grace Porter and N’yomi Stewart.

One of Shakespeare’s most indelible villains, Richard is determined to be King. Following his lust for power and the throne, he manipulates, kidnaps and kills all who stand between him and his throne, using brilliant words and dark charm to conceal his dismantling of government and justice.

Richard III will feature scenic design by Myung Hee Cho, costume design by Dede Ayite, lighting design by Alex Jainchill, sound design and composition by Elisheba Ittoop, hair and wig design by Mia Neal, fight direction by Teniece Divya Johnson and Jeremy Sample, intimacy direction by Teniece Divya Johnson and movement direction by Byron Easley.

“It has been over 30 years since Richard III was produced at the Delacorte, and I’m excited to bring one of drama’s all-time favorite villains back onto the Central Park stage,” director O’Hara said in a statement. The 1990 production, directed by Robin Phillips, featured Denzel Washington in the title role and returning cast member Sharon Washington as Lady Anne.

TRACY, Calif. — Weather wreaked havoc with the 2022 NFCA Nor Cal High School Leadoff Classic tournament schedule over the weekend, but teams were still able to get back on the field at the event for the first time in three years.

The 17th edition of the long-running event, conceived and run since 2004 by Pacheco High head coach Charlie Pikas, carried the NFCA banner for the first time this year through a partnership with the Association. It was supposed to have been rebranded in 2021, but COVID-19 intervened, and last year’s tournament was canceled for a second-straight season.

This year, rain, hail and lightning halted play by the afternoon on the opening day, leading to a quick pivot to a three-game, two-day event for teams, rather than the planned four contests over three days. The existing schedule was scrapped, and teams were matched as best as possible for competitive balance.

“The brackets went out the window,” Pikas said. “We resorted to Plan B, which was to get teams at least three games, instead of the four from the original schedule.”

The new matchups led to some very good games. At one point on the fields at the main complex, pitchers committed to Division I schools California, Chattanooga, Connecticut, Ole Miss and UC Santa Barbara, plus Division II’s San Francisco State were all in game action.

While the revised format didn’t allow divisional titlists and an overall champion to be crowned, the event did provide a challenging warmup for the playoffs in three weeks.

The tournament had originally been planned to feature 48 teams across three divisions and two locations in Tracy, Calif., with trophies awarded to each of the bracket winners. Before this year, the tournament was last fully played in 2019, after only getting one day in before rain halted things in 2018. Oakdale was the 2019 Platinum winner, while Del Oro took the Gold division, and Del Campo claimed the Silver crown.
