‘Happy Face Killer’ Victim Identified 30 years After Body Found Near Gilroy

GILROY (CBS SF/AP) — A victim of the Happy Face Killer has been identified nearly 30 years after her body was left near a rural Gilroy highway.

Patricia Skiple of Colton, Oregon, had been known only as “Blue Pacheco” for the color of her clothing until genetic genealogy was used to identify her last week, the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office said.

According to cold case investigators, the case began when a female body was located on the side of California State Route 152 in
unincorporated Gilroy in June 1993.

At the time of the incident, the body was dressed in blue clothing and her identity was unknown. The Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s autopsy report classified the cause of death as “undetermined”. A nearly a 30-year investigation ensued.

In 1994, an Oregon newspaper ran a five-part series “The Happy Face Serial Killer” in which an anonymous letter-writer claimed to have committed five murders throughout the West Coast.

The person behind the anonymous letter-writing was later identified as Keith Hunter Jesperson, also known as the “Happy Face Killer”, who signed his anonymous letters with a happy face symbol.

In 2006, Jesperson submitted a letter to the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office admitting to sexually assaulting and killing an unknown female subject along a dirt turnout on Highway 152.

In July 2007, Jesperson pled guilty to killing a female subject, referred to as “Blue Pacheco”, but the woman’s identity remained a mystery.

In 2019, Sheriff’s office cold case detectives used advanced investigative genetic genealogy in an attempt to identify “Blue
Pacheco”. They partnered with the DNA Doe Project.

A major break came last week, after pursuing multiple leads, detectives were able to identify “Blue Pacheco” as Patricia Skiple, known to family and friends close to her as “Patsy”. She would have been approximately 45 years old at the time she was killed.

“This case was exceptionally challenging due to recent Norwegian ancestry which resulted in very distant DNA matches on GEDmatch and FamilyTreeDNA,” said DNA Doe Project team leader Cairenn Binder.

Jesperson eventually confessed to killing eight women between 1990 and 1995 in California, Washington, Oregon, Florida, Nebraska, and Wyoming. He currently is serving four life sentences without possibility of parole in Oregon.

Thief in Wig Smashes Into Boyle Heights Restaurant – NBC Los Angeles

A small business owner in Boyle Heights says he’s concerned about a rise in crime after his restaurant and vehicles have been broken into four times during the past year.

The restaurant, Birria Los Socios on East Third Place is closed on Mondays and the front door has been repaired, but early Easter Sunday, a thief smashed through the glass and made off with thousands of dollars in electronic equipment.

“He tried to pry it open here,” said owner Jose Pacheco. “As you can see he dented all this with a screwdriver.”

Pacheco is still assessing the damage after his business was broken into around 5:30.

He’s hoping this surveillance video might help identify the thief – who busted through the front door glass and went directly to the kitchen where he stuffs iPads and an iPhone into a bag.

Cameras caught him trying unsuccessfully to get into the cash register, and then crawling into a hallway to rifle through employee lockers.

“He opened them all up,” he said. “He emptied out whatever was valuable.”

Pacheco says the thief wasn’t able to get into the locked office.

“The alarm went off. I think he got panicked and luckily he left before he opened that door.”

Pacheco says the loss of the iPads means he can’t accept any online orders for doordash or grubhub, which accounts for about half of his business right now.

“Now I have to wait for new iPads to arrive,” he said. “Now I’m not going to be able to sell online orders – it’s really gonna hurt my business.”

Pacheco is surprised the thief was so brazen, breaking in despite plenty of lighting, an alarm system, and surveillance cameras.

Pacheco says he took a big risk opening a restaurant during the pandemic and he’s been struggling due to a previous break-in on New Years Eve, and several break ins of his families vehicles parked outside.

“It’s getting pretty bad,” he said. “Like I mentioned before my mom got her truck broken into and I got my catalytic converter stolen from my truck.”

The LAPD said they took a report, but they admit it will be hard to catch this guy because he was wearing gloves and the cameras never got a good look at his face.

But he did appear to have bushy grey hair or a wig beneath his hat.

Student emerging artists display work in McMaster Museum of Art exhibit – Daily News

Taking Space, an exhibition at the McMaster Museum of Art, highlights and showcases the work of the graduating class of McMaster’s School of the Arts’ Bachelor of Fine Arts program.

“Taking space means daring to be bold, seen, and heard. The 2022 SUMMA exhibition Taking Space does exactly that,” says curator Sahra Soudi.

The work of the 18 emerging artists is united around this central theme and pieces of each artist’s personal stories is woven into the art.

“Through the exhibition, these young visionary artists explore the connections between their craft and their principles, finding innovative ways to share their emerging art practices,” says Soudi.

On the last day of March, the emerging artists debuted their artwork, which uses all sorts of mediums, from painting, digital media, drawing, photography, textiles, and installation in the McMaster Museum of Art to their families and friends.

Here is a look at some of the pieces that make up Taking Space.

Hanan Abbas
Title of Artwork: 3arabi? (Arabic?)

Hanan Abbas explores creative forms of communication online, while including the text 3arabi? for the chosen displayed piece, which is simply translated to “Arabic?”

This method of communication has been developed by Middle Eastern youth to deal with the limited accessibility of tools and non-support for Arabic script. The work therefore self-referentially asks if this can be considered Arabic.

This piece is a multimedia installation using monitors, as well as vinyl lettering on acrylic sheet displayed on one of the walls at the museum.

PauTheRebel
Title of Artwork: Neon Android and Demon (painting on wall)
Title of Artwork: Android’s Lullably.mp4 (installation)

PauTheRebel presents two pieces of work, Neon Android and Demon and Android’s Lullably.mp4.

Android’s Lullably.mp4, an installation that takes place on the floor of the exhibition, was made in collaboration with PauTheRebel’s good friend, pak. It features a gutted CRT screen and audio that runs for 3:50 mins.

Neon Android and Demon is made of acrylic, vinyl cut-outs, tulle and paint marker on panel.

PauTheRebel’s current collection explores lived experiences and re-experiencing them through a nostalgic lens influenced by the internet.

Gabby Pacheco
Title of Artwork: Pathos in Motion

Gabby Pacheco paints inspiration from photography through the lens of a microscope.

The painting Pathos in Motion is inspired by the cross-section of a cell structure inside a leaf from Pacheco, who minors in biology.

Although Pacheco says Pathos in Motion is much different from their usual work, the colourful and interpretive piece was a fit for this exhibition.

Olivia Missons
Title of Artwork: The poem and Her Colours

Olivia Missons, working with a deconstructed poetry book, uses colour psychology to convey and relate emotion in response to each poem in her piece The poem and Her Colours

The poem and Her Colours uses recycled book pages with additions of hand colouring and embroidery, and hangs from the ceiling of the museum.

Colour theory and line of movement form the base of Missons’ work.

Taking Space is on at the McMaster Museum of Art until April 29, 2022.

To view the exhibition, visit the museum during open hours. Appointments are not required.
