Isha Mahashivratri: Sadhguru announces 30,000 km lone motorcycle journey from London to India to save soil

Live-wire energy enveloped the Isha Yoga Center as it celebrated its annual 12-hour cultural extravaganza, Mahashivaratri, beginning at 6 pm on March 1. High-voltage music and dance performances, powerful meditation sessions, Linga Bhairavi and Adiyogi Maha Arti and the lighting of the Mahayoga Yagna contributed to the electric atmosphere at Adiyogi as the event unfolded in the presence of Sadhguru, Founder-Isha Foundation.

As customary, Sadhguru performed the Pancha Bhuta Aradhana or the cleansing of elements at the Dhyanalinga Yogic Temple before the celebrations at Adiyogi. Sadhguru also lit the Mahayoga Yagna to symbolize the spread of Yoga through the world before welcoming the gathering at Adiyogi.

Sadhguru shared details about his latest and arguably the most critical global movement that he has launched to Save Soil. The Save Soil Movement will urge leaders around the world to initiate urgent policy-driven action in their countries to prevent soil extinction. Scientists and UN agencies have predicted that the planet has cultivable soil for only up to 55 years and have warned of catastrophic food shortages that could plunge the world into brutal civil strife. In a strong, emotional appeal, he told the audience, “Soil is the only magic where if you bury death, it sprouts life,” and added “we have come from this soil, we eat of this soil and when we die, we get back to the soil.”

Asking the audience to join the Movement and raise their voice to Save Soil, Sadhguru said, “From 21st of March, I’m riding from London – a lone motorcycle – 30,000 km, 27 nations, 100 days. These 100 days, every one of you, at least for 5-10 minutes a day, say something about soil. This is important. The whole world should speak of soil for 100 days.” He said unless people express explicitly to governments that they are concerned about the state of the soil, governments cannot act. “This is not a protest, this is not some kind of pressure tactics. This is an expression of the will of the citizens,” he said.

A galaxy of singers teamed with Isha’s home-grown music band, Sounds of Isha, to keep the energetic audience on their feet through the night. They included Sean Roland, Karthik, Sandeep Narayanan, Papon, Mangali, Machel Montano and Hansraj Raghuvanshi among others. The Kalari (martial arts) performance by students of Isha Samskriti along with dancers from Kerala had the audience spellbound. The drum jam is one of the most popular segments of the Mahashivaratri celebrations every year. This year, the Jamaab Drummers’ wowed the audience with their foot-tapping music.

The performances were interspersed with meditation sessions guided by Sadhguru and Sadhguru’s discourse which included a Q&A session. Thousands of people participated either in person or through live relay in the much anticipated powerful midnight meditation led by Sadhguru.

Guests at the event included H.E. Mrs. Mariana Pacheco Montes, Ambassador of Columbia to India; Shri. Pramod Sawant, Chief Minister, Goa; Shri. Om Birla, Hon’ble speaker of Lok Sabha; Miss India Manasa Varanasi, former India cricketer Venkatesh Prasad, and popular Hindi film actor Kangana Ranaut were among several celebrities who were in attendance besides central government officials.

The Maha Annadanam, which is an offering of food to everyone who visits the Center on Mahashivaratri, was served to all visitors.

For those who could not be present at the venue, over 150 television and web channels streamed the event live enabling them to participate virtually, reaching the event to a few million people worldwide.

Treatment for opioid addiction often brings discrimination – ABC News

PHILADELPHIA — Danielle Russell was in the emergency department at an Arizona hospital last fall, sick with COVID-19, when she made the mistake of answering completely when she was asked what medications she was on.

“I said yes, I was taking methadone,” said Russell, a doctoral student who also was in recovery from heroin use. “The smart thing to do, if I wanted to be treated like a human, would be to say no.”

Even though her primary doctor had sent her to the ER, she said she was discharged swiftly without being treated and given a stack of papers about the hospital’s policies for prescribing pain medications — drugs she was not asking for.

“It becomes so absurd and the stigma against methadone especially is so strong,” she said, noting that other people in recovery have had it worse. “You’re getting blocked out from housing resources, employment.”

It’s a problem people in the addiction recovery community have dealt with for decades: On top of the stigma surrounding addiction, people who are in medical treatment for substance abuse can face additional discrimination — including in medical and legal settings that are supposed to help.

This week, the U.S. Department of Justice published new guidelines aimed at dealing with the problem: They assert that it’s illegal under the Americans with Disabilities Act to discriminate against people because they are using prescribed methadone or other medications to treat opioid use disorder.

The guidelines don’t change federal government policy, but they do offer clarification and signal that authorities are watching for discrimination in a wide range of settings. The Justice Department’s actions this year also show it’s taken an interest in the issue, reaching multiple legal settlements, filing a lawsuit and sending a warning letter alleging other violations.

One of the government’s recent settlements was with a Colorado program that helps house and employ people who are homeless. A potential client filed a complaint claiming she was denied admission because she uses buprenorphine to treat her addiction. As part of the settlement, Ready to Work is paying the woman $7,500. Stan Garnett, a lawyer for the organization, said Thursday that the organization’s staff is being trained to comply with the law.

“It’s terrifying to be told by some authority — whether it’s a judge, or a child welfare official, or a skilled nursing facility — someone who has something you need is telling you you have to get off the medication that is saving your life,” said Sally Friedman, senior vice president of legal advocacy at the Legal Action Center, which uses legal challenges to try to end punitive measures for people with health conditions, including addiction.

Friedman said advocates and lawyers will cite the new guidelines when they’re making discrimination claims.

Dan Haight, president of The LCADA Way, which runs addiction treatment programs in the Cleveland area, said a suburb where they wanted to put a clinic at one point nixed the idea because of a moratorium in place on new drug counseling centers.

“We’re not looked at as another medical facility or counseling office,” Haight said. “We’re looked at because we do addiction.”

The new guidelines suggest that such broad denials could be violations of the ADA.

Overdoses from all opioids, including prescription drugs containing oxycodone, heroin and illicit laboratory-made varieties including fentanyl, have killed more than 500,000 Americans in the last two decades, and the problem has been growing only worse. That has frustrated advocates, treatment providers and public health experts who see the deaths as preventable with treatment.

Even as the crisis has deepened, there have been glimmers of hope. Drugmakers, distribution companies and pharmacy chains have announced settlements since last year to pay government entities about $35 billion over time plus provide drugs to treat addictions and reverse overdoses. Most of the money is required to be used to fight the epidemic.

It’s still to be determined how the money will be deployed, but one priority for many public health experts is expanding access to medication-based treatments, which are seen as essential to helping people recover.

But there’s still a stigma associated with the treatment programs, which use the medication naltrexone or drugs that themselves are opioids, such as methadone and buprenorphine.

Marcus Buchanan used methadone from 2016 through 2018 to help end a decadelong heroin habit. During that time, he was looking for work near his home in Chouteau, Oklahoma — mostly at factories — and could never land one.

“I can nail an interview. It would be the drug-screen process” when he’d explain why the results showed he was using methadone, said Buchanan, who is now an outreach coordinator for an opioid prevention program. “Every job, more than 20 probably, during those two years, was a door shut in the face.”

Dr. Susan Bissett, president of the nonprofit West Virginia Drug Intervention Institute, said people who are in treatment programs often hide it out of fear that they could lose their jobs.

She said she wants to reach out to business leaders and encourage them to hire and retain people who are using the medications.

“The next step is helping employers understand this is a disease instead of a moral failing,” Bissett said. “We don’t think about substance abuse disorder the way we think about diabetes, for example.”

One of the places where medication-assisted treatment is sometimes restricted or banned is in state drug diversion court programs, which are intended to get people help for addiction rather than incarcerate them.

Fewer than half the states have specific language that prohibits judges from excluding people who are taking the medications from participating in diversion programs or requires that they allow its use as part of the programs. That finding is based on an Associated Press review of legislation, administrative court orders and drug court handbooks that guide state drug diversion court programs.

Some states allow individual courts to make their own rules, while others only include language saying people can’t be excluded. Judges in some states still require defendants to taper off the medications and allow the diversion programs to decide whether the medications are appropriate for each person enrolled.

The Center for Court Innovation is trying to steer the drug courts into creating policies and programs that support people taking those medications instead of incentivizing them to stop.

“It can be frustrating, because nobody needs to tell a judge they need to allow someone to take blood pressure medication,” said Sheila McCarthy, a senior program manager for the Center for Court Innovation. “But for some, there is just a disconnect about the real effect these medications have on a person’s daily life.”

Veronica Pacheco has been off methadone for nearly a year after being on it for more than six years to treat an addiction to pain pills.

She said some people in the medical field — a physician, a dentist, a pharmacist — seemed to treat her differently after they learned she was on methadone treatment. They sometimes assume she was going to ask for new prescriptions for pain medications.

“I felt like I had a sign on my forehead saying, ‘I am a methadone person.’ The minute someone has your medical record, everything changes,” said Pacheco, who lives in the Minneapolis suburb of Dayton. “Now that I’ve been off it, I can see the night-and-day difference.”

PFL 3 will see the promotion’s top stars back in action. Kayla Harrison (12-0) will be headlining the fight card and will be taking on promotional newcomer Marina Mokhnatkina (6-2). Cooper is riding six straight wins into this season’s debut with wins over Christopher Curtis, Rory MacDonald, and Magomed Magomedkerimov.

The remainder of the main card feature some more big names, with former UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis (24-12) looking to rebound from his lackluster first season with the PFL to take on newcomer Myles Price (11-7).

You also can’t forget about the former Bellator MMA welterweight champion the “Red King” Rory MacDonald (22-8-1) taking on newcomer Brett Cooper (28-15). MacDonald will look to get over the hump and finally be the PFL welterweight champ this season.

Karol Rosa’s Blueprint for Success

Karol
Rosa
likes to keep all her options on the table.

The 27-year-old Brazilian upstart will try to continue her rise
through the
Ultimate Fighting Championship
women’s bantamweight ranks when
she toes the line against Sara McMann
as part of the
UFC on ESPN 33
undercard this Saturday at Nationwide Arena in
Columbus, Ohio. Rosa has rattled off six consecutive victories,
four of them since she joined the UFC roster in 2019, and views
McMann as a potential steppingstone at 135 pounds.

“I’m looking forward to beating Sara and entering the Top 10 of our
weight class,” she told Sherdog.com. “Who knows? I’d love to be
fighting for the belt by the end of this year or by the start of
next year.”

Rosa expects a stern test when she meets the Takoma Park, Maryland,
native. A silver medalist in freestyle wrestling at the 2004 Sumer
Olympics in Sydney, McMann has experienced an uneven run in the
UFC, where she carries a 6-6 record that includes losses to four
current or former champions: Julianna
Pena
, Ronda
Rousey
, Miesha Tate
and Amanda
Nunes
.

“Sara is the best wrestler in our weight class,” Rosa said. “She’s
a great grappler. She has good striking, but her forte is takedowns
and [the] ground game. I’m a jiu-jitsu black belt. I’m very
confident on the ground, and I’ve made significant improvements on
my muay Thai. I believe we’ll have a great fight since our styles
match up so well.”

Operating out of the same Parana Vale Tudo camp that produced
Jessica
Andrade
, Rosa hit the ground running in the UFC. She made her
promotional debut at UFC Fight Night 157 on Aug. 31, 2019, when she
engaged in a memorable firefight with Lara
Procopio
and emerged with a split decision. Rosa has since gone
on to defeat Vanessa
Melo
, Joselyne
Edwards
and Bethe
Correia
. Like many other competitors, she was forced to
navigate the logistical issues brought about by the coronavirus
pandemic, including several failed attempts to book a fight with
Julia
Avila
. It limited her to one appearance in 2020 and two in
2021.

“It was also difficult for Brazilians to enter the United States,
but everything happens on God’s time,” Rosa said. “The
cancellations allowed me additional training time. I was able to
build up my confidence and take time to analyze my future
opponents. The time was also helpful in helping me mature and
further perfect my game.”

Despite her quick success in the UFC, Rosa remembers her brushes
with adversity as a prospect on the regional scene in Brazil. A
majority decision defeat to and submission defeats to Larissa
Pacheco
and Melissa
Gatto
forced her to look inward and did much to shape her
development.

“My losses—we always learn from them,” Rosa said. “I wasn’t ready
to be in the UFC yet. The losses allowed me to mature and learn
more about my own game. It’s how I was able to see what needed to
be improved. That was very important for my growth.”

As Rosa approaches perhaps the most significant opportunity of her
career to date, she points to a source of strength that exists
outside the confines of competition.

“I am a girl who has a lot of faith,” she said. “I believe strongly
in God, and everything that happens in my life is because He allows
it to happen. My faith is what moves me every day.”
