Seattle Public Library Helps Teens Explore Mental Health With Virtual Reality | South Seattle Emerald

by Agueda Pacheco Flores

Inside a cabin surrounded by greenery, flowers, and evergreens are colored pebbles, pots, labels, a compost machine, and a seed-creator machine. The sound of birds chirping and a little goat can be heard periodically. A few steps away from the cabin is a cave, and on the walls of its entrance is the question “How are you feeling today?” with buttons for emotions, such as happy, angry, hopeful, and stressed.

The virtual reality (VR) game, called “De-Stress Gardening,” is alluring for the same reason many agricultural farming games are popular: They are designed to imitate nature, and as opposed to being competitive, are goal-oriented and have low stakes. But “De-Stress Gardening” is still more unique. It was co-designed by a group of 12 teens from around Seattle (as far south as South Park and as far north as Greenwood) with the help of The Seattle Public Library (SPL) staff and student interns from the University of Washington (UW), with the goal of destigmatizing mental health.

“One of the things that, for me, was very transformative was allowing these conversations to happen,” said Juan Rubio, SPL program manager and project lead. “It was like hesitation in the beginning, because you’re so unfamiliar about just mentioning mental health, but in this space, because we were intentional, it became more normal.”

For six months, the group of 12 teens met virtually with Rubio, other SPL staff, and UW interns and researchers. They talked and learned about mental health, workshopped ideas, and brainstormed designs. SPL staff were surprised to see such high retention among the teens (between the ages of 14 and 16), who came back to the remote meetings every other week.

“De-Stress Gardening” is just one of three virtual reality projects funded by a grant offered by the Institute of Museum and Library Services in 2020 to help libraries respond to the pandemic. SPL provided additional funding to launch the mental health-focused initiative alongside the District of Columbia Public Library in Washington, D.C., and the Fayette Public Library, Museum & Archives in La Grange, Texas.

With the program now finished, SPL has launched the VRtality.org website, which gives teens a step-by-step road map to replicate the process of designing a mental health-centered VR game. The VR games are also available for download on the website for anyone with a VR headset. The games are compatible with the Oculus Quest 2, which the library offers on loan to community groups.

“This common theme … seems to appear a lot when we come up with ideas for what we want to do in the VR … like pets or nature, and what was really interesting to us was this sort of concept, constructive destruction; [the teens] want the VR space to be a place where they can express their frustration and negative emotions in some way,” said Jin Ha Lee, one of the UW investigators involved with the project.

An element of “De-Stress Garden” allows players to smash and destroy inanimate shapes and objects in order to collect color material for the garden.

The other mental health game designs include “Animal Excursion,” where players walk through a forest interacting with woodland creatures, designed by the students in Texas, and “Purrrniverse,” a game about a typical cat that knocks things off tables, designed by students in D.C.

In a presentation that Elin Björling, one of the principal UW investigators on the VR project, made to teens, she said teens experience the most amount of chronic stress of any other age group.

“Teens are becoming more stressed and more depressed, especially in the U.S.,” she said.

The U.S. Surgeon General, Dr. Vivek Murthy, warned last year in a report that the pandemic had intensified an already urgent teen mental health crisis.

The momentum behind virtual reality has grown exponentially with Facebook releasing its new VR platform Meta, and as physical distancing became the norm during the pandemic. But the potential for VR as a therapeutic tool is also steadily catching on, making SPL an institution that’s ahead of the curve.

Since 2019, SPL has been experimenting with virtual reality, creating learning environments for patrons. It has offered interactive VR exhibits that explored the history of the Great Seattle Fire as well as one that explored the evolution of the Duwamish River.

Rubio, who has led many of these VR projects at SPL, says the potential of VR for youth is an opportunity.

“The opportunity for young people to imagine futures, to think of, what is possible? What is their desire?” he said. “In this way, it’s innovative, and it also appeals to their sensibility — they’re gamers.”

The library’s interest in VR and mental health is just another way SPL is expanding what it can offer to the community and perhaps add to the ways libraries help their communities.

“It really gave an opportunity to sort of reimagine the role of libraries and librarians in the mental health space,” said Lee. “We’re never going to be in a situation where everybody in all communities have access to mental health resources, but libraries can really help, because it’s a really well-established infrastructure in our society, even for small and rural communities.”

Volcanic activity worldwide 8 Apr 2022: Fuego volcano, Popocatépetl, Semeru, Dukono, Reventador, Po…

Map of today's active volcanoes

Map of today’s active volcanoes

Campi Flegrei (Phlegrean Fields) (Italy): After the water in the Averno crater lake turned red last week because of an unusually strong algae bloom, stretches of the sea in the Gulf of Pozzuoli also turned red recently, presumably from the same phenomenon.
Such algae blooms of the Averno lake usually happen in winter, when deep water is warmer than at the surface and rises along with algae that can multiply explosively. However, this year’s algae bloom, especially its extension into the adjacent open sea seems to be much stronger than what residents can recollect from recent memory. Many are worried whether there is a connection with the increased seismic and degassing activity of the caldera volcano:
… [read more] … [show less]

Since the status of the Campi Flegrei has been on a first level of increased unrest for a while, many residents are concerned about a possible connection. A suspicion voiced is that the algae bloom in the sea could be due to an increased heat flow at the sea floor, as a result of increased volcanic degassing.

São Jorge (Azores Islands, Portugal): ) The seismic swarm under the island’s northwestern rift zone has decreased a lot during the past days, but it is still ongoing at lower levels.
Weak inflation also continued to be registered, which is why the official alert level remains at the second highest level of V4.

São Jorge (Azores) seismic activity continues above normal levels. Although it has decreased in hourly frequency and magnitude, it is still ongoing. Since 19 March at least 226 events were felt by the population. For updates follow @PROCIVazores and CIVISA https://t.co/nTI0gn2FPH pic.twitter.com/VrujkrVfjF

— Adriano Pimentel (@AdrianoAzoVolc) April 5, 2022

Kadovar (Northeast of New Guinea): ) Explosive activity continues. Volcanic Ash Advisory Center (VAAC) Darwin warned about a volcanic ash plume that rose up to estimated 5000 ft (1500 m) altitude or flight level 050 and is moving at 15 kts in SE direction.
The full report is as follows: DISCRETE VA EMISSIONS TO FL050 EXT TO SE OBS VA DTG:08/0130Z to 5000 ft (1500 m)

Semeru (East Java, Indonesia): ) Volcanic Ash Advisory Center Darwin (VAAC) issued the following report: VA REPORTED TO FL150 AT 07/2248Z OBS VA DTG:07/2248Z

Dukono (Halmahera): Explosive activity continues. Volcanic Ash Advisory Center (VAAC) Darwin warned about a volcanic ash plume that rose up to estimated 7000 ft (2100 m) altitude or flight level 070 and is moving at 20 kts in NE direction.
The full report is as follows: CONTINUOUS VA EMISSIONS TO FL070 EXT TO NE AT 08/0850Z to 7000 ft (2100 m)

Kilauea (Hawai’i): ) The lava lake has dropped, but remains active. This follows the usual pattern of recent deflation at the summit of the volcano and will likely revert to inflation and rising lava lake levels in the near future.
The volcano observatory reported: “The summit eruption of Kīlauea Volcano, within Halemaʻumaʻu crater, continues at this time. The level of the active lava lake within Halema‘uma‘u has dropped by several meters since 6:00 p.m. yesterday, in association with summit deflation and a decline in volcanic tremor.
… [read more] … [show less]
However, the lake surface has continued to circulate today. This activity resembles that of other summit deflationary periods in recent weeks, so lava will likely be on the surface of the active lava lake this evening.”

Popocatépetl (Central Mexico): Explosive activity continues. Volcanic Ash Advisory Center (VAAC) Washington warned about a volcanic ash plume that rose up to estimated 20000 ft (6100 m) altitude or flight level 200 .
The full report is as follows: VA EMS OBS to 20000 ft (6100 m)

Fuego (Guatemala): Explosive activity continues. Volcanic Ash Advisory Center (VAAC) Washington warned about a volcanic ash plume that rose up to estimated 15000 ft (4600 m) altitude or flight level 150 and is moving at 5 kts in W direction.
The full report is as follows: ONGOING VA EMS to 15000 ft (4600 m)

Poas (Costa Rica): ) An eruption occurred yesterday (7 April) morning at 2.42 a.m. local time from the volcano’s crater northern area. The event lasted about 3 minutes and generated a steam plume that rose 500 m from the crater to approx. 3200 m altitude.
There was apparently no warning for the eruption, which came without detectable precursors, such as increases seismic activity, an increase in temperature at the fumaroles or other geophysical changes. During other eruptions of Poás, the temperature at the northern crater rim’s fumaroles often had been seen increasing from 100 to 900°C, volcanologist Javier Pacheco from Costa Rica’s monitoring agency OVSICORI-UNA explained in an interview with La Nación. This had not been the case yesterday. As the eruption seems to have not involved any new magma, but almost purely ejected steam, it was likely a phreatic (steam-driven) explosion.
… [read more] … [show less]

It is actually rather typical that such phreatic explosions occur with little or no warning at an active volcano: Fluids, water and gasses, contained in the subsurface system of cracks and cavities normally form a circulating system that allows heat and excess gasses that can no longer be stored in solution to be transferred to the surface, where degassing takes place, often in the form of fumaroles or hot crater lakes.

Nevado del Ruiz (Colombia): ) Volcanic Ash Advisory Center Washington (VAAC) issued the following report: NO VA OBS

Sangay (Ecuador): Explosive activity continues. Volcanic Ash Advisory Center (VAAC) Washington warned about a volcanic ash plume that rose up to estimated 21000 ft (6400 m) altitude or flight level 210 .
The full report is as follows: ONGOING VA EMS to 21000 ft (6400 m)

Reventador (Ecuador): Explosive activity continues. Volcanic Ash Advisory Center (VAAC) Washington warned about a volcanic ash plume that rose up to estimated 15000 ft (4600 m) altitude or flight level 150 .
The full report is as follows: ONGOING VA EMS to 15000 ft (4600 m)

Sabancaya (Peru): Volcanic Ash Advisory Center Buenos Aires (VAAC) issued the following report: continuous ash emissions

Full article: The Ancient Inca Town Named Huayna Picchu

1 This is not meant to be an exhaustive list of works on Machu Picchu, as there are many other publications that deal with the ruins.

2 The San Miguel bridge was located just downstream from Machu Picchu.

3 This conversation and the name “Huainapichu” is recorded in Bingham’s field journal (MacQuarrie 2007:390). When recalling this same conversation some thirty years later, Bingham, perhaps unconsciously, changed the name stating that the miner told him that there were “interesting ruins at Machu Picchu” (Bingham 1948:113).

4 Before he left for Peru, Bingham corresponded with William Curtis Farabee, a Harvard University professor who had led the J. DeMilhau Ethnological Expedition to South America (1906–1909). Farabee reported that during his field work he heard rumors of a lost city in the mountains and he sent Bingham some kind of map. This vague information appears not to have been useful to Bingham in finding the site of Machu Picchu since he writes, “On the other hand, a Harvard Anthropological Expedition, under the leadership of Dr. William Farabee, had recently been over this road without reporting any ruins of importance (Bingham 1915:202).”

5 This new road was built by the German engineer Herman Göhring in 1873. Polo y la Borda was one of the inspectors of the road that the state ordered to build to aid coca production lower down the Urubamba River in the Santa Ana Valley (now generally called Quillabamba).

6 In another article, Bingham (1913:403) describes the conversation as follows “He said that on top of the magnificent precipice nearby there were some ruins at a place called Machu Pichu, and that there were others still more inaccessible at Huayna Picchu, on a peak not far distant from our camp.”

7 Enrique Palma and Agustín Lizárraga, both of whom lived on the valley floor, and Gavino Sanchez, visited the site on the 14th of July 1902 (Cosio 1912:20). They may have looted Machu Picchu during this visit, as a large Inca vessel said to be found by Lizárraga, and subsequently sold to Tomas Alvistur (the son-in-law of the owner of the nearby Huadquiña Hacienda), was purchased by Bingham in 1914 (Heaney 2010:172–173). At the time of Bingham’s 1911 visit, Alvistur had no knowledge of Machu Picchu, but he offered to help Bingham visit a series of other, smaller sites, that were near to the Huadquiña Hacienda (Bingham 1912:220–221). For additional information on pre-Bingham explorations in the Urubamba River valley near Machu Picchu, see Buck (1993).

8 Luis A Pardo (1961:7) suggests that Luis Bejar Ugarte visited the site in 1894 but provides no additional details.

9 Mr. Agustín Lizárraga died crossing the Urubamba River on 11 February 1912 about a month after he led another group of visitors to the site (Cosio 1912:13).

10 Daniel Buck (1993:30), who has spent decades researching the recent history of Machu Picchu, reports that several days later while Bingham was at Santa Ana, Bingham wrote a letter to the Royal Geographical Society in London announcing his discovery: “found the ruins of a wonderful old Inca city … now called Machu Pichu i.e. old Pichu.”

11 The first member of Bingham’s team to climb Huayna Picchu was Kenneth C. Heald. Heald was the topographer on Bingham’s 1912 expedition and was also in charge of clearing the initial paths to the site. Once the path was completed he turned his attention to gaining access to Huayna Picchu, to investigate what was rumored to be a set of magnificent ruins at it summit. After several failed attempts, he reached the summit with the help of Arteaga who had been there before.

12 Apparently during his January 1912 visit, Justo Ochoa wrote his name on some 30 different locations at the site (Bingham 1930:19). Ochoa returned for a second vision on July 23, 1912, along with Giesecke and a dozen other professors and students from the Universidad Nacional de San Antonio Abad del Cusco.

14 Bingham (1948:114) had a copy of this map on his 1911 expedition.

15 While Bingham references Markham’s book Incas of Peru (1912) several times in his own book Inca land (Bingham 1912), there is no evidence that Bingham had a copy of Markham’s 1910 map when he was conducting research in the Cusco region in 1911.

16 On September 8, 1912, a letter was published in the New York Times (which had been published the day before in Berlin) written by the German engineer Carl Haenel, stating that his colleague J. M. von Hassel was the first to visit the ruins of Machu Picchu. A review of von Hassel’s publications produced while he was working for the Junta de Vias Fluviales by Buck has found no specific mention of the ruins. (see http://www.kimmacquarrie.com/category/did-a-german-discover-machu-picchu/)

17 There is also the curious case of August R. Berns. It appears that Berns first traveled into the region in search of large stands of trees to cut as ties for the Cusco-Arequipa railroad. He established a sawmill near the base of Machu Picchu; the remains of which were seen by many who later traveled down the Urubamba. Sometime later, Berns founded a mining company with hopes of prospecting in the region across the river from Machu Picchu (Greer 2008; Mould de Pease y Romero Pacheco 2008). While the area of the ruins is marked on a map used by Berns as “Point Huaca Inca” there is no additional evidence that he climbed the ridge to visit them, and he never used the names Machu Picchu or Huayna Picchu in his pamphlets (see http://www.kimmacquarrie.com/category/did-a-german-discover-machu-picchu/)

18 Among the vast holdings of Hernando Pizarro were Amaybamba, Biticos (Vitcos) as well as the Valley of Bilcabamba (Vilcabamba) (Varón Gabai 1996), the three most important Inca towns downriver from Machu Picchu.

19 In 1572 a commission headed by Pedro Alonso Carrasco and García de Melo was sent to Amaybamba to investigate why Arias Maldonado had provided no tribute that year. The commission concluded that the Indians of Amaybamba and Piccho could not give what was assigned to them because during the war of Vilcabamba more than one hundred men had been stationed near the Chuquichaca bridge, and many others had passed through the region, exhausting the local produce (ARC. Corregimiento de Causas Ordinarias. Leg. 1. 1551–1585. C. 11. Causas ordinarias).

20 Also known as Inca Yupanqui.

21 This claim that Machu Picchu was built during the time of Pachacuti Inca Yupanqui is supported by a 1570 document published by Rostworowski (1963:229, also cited in Rowe 1990:280) that indicates that the nearby ruins of Guaman Marca in the Amaybamba Valley were also built for the pleasure of Pachacuti Inca Yupanqui (“fueron de ynca yupanqui que tenía allí para su recreación”).

22 It should be noted that some of the Silque documents list four closely spaced toponyms called: Machu Picchu, Huayna Picchu, Apo Picchu and Capac Picchu.

(ARC Ciencias, Documentos Silque, 1635–1722, Parte 1, f. 6–7, transcription by Amado Gonzales).

24 San Francisco de la Victoria de Vilcabamba.

25 Machu Picchu was located on the limits of Inca and Spanish controlled territory for nearly 40 years.

26 For additional information on the history of the Vilcabamba region during the time of Martin Hurtado de Arbieto see Bauer et al 2016:23–42.

27 Some of the inhabitants of the Vilcabamba region may have been originally from Huayna Picchu, having moved into the region with Manco Inca when he fled Cusco.

(ARC Ciencias. Documentos, Silque, 1635–1722. Part 11, f. 8; transcription by Amado Gonzales).
