Nicole Gardner was walking her dog around her Corona neighborhood one October afternoon when she had a shocking encounter — with a wild pig.

“It had tusks. It growled and moved toward us,” the 18-year-old said. “My dog just started barking at it. I was pretty scared. They were about the same size.”

Gardner and her mom, Judy, said the pigs have visited their north Corona neighborhood near the Santa Ana River at least three times since October. They roam in the street and dig around for food in front lawns, the family’s video footage shows.

“If you drive around our streets, you’ll see all these lumpy yards,” said Judy Gardner, who described her front lawn as a “puzzle.”

“We’ve just sort of given up fixing ours,” she said. “We try to make light of it, but it’s really a terrible and unsafe situation.”

Wild swine have been around for decades in parts of Riverside County, mainly around the Santa Ana River, Prado Reservoir and surrounding areas, including Corona, Norco, Jurupa Valley and Riverside. In one example of their rampages, the porkers tore up turf at Riverside’s Fairmount Park in 2016. And, in early January, they damaged grass by the cabins at Rancho Jurupa Regional Park in Jurupa Valley, near the river, Riverside County Regional Park and Open-Space District officials said.

“It looks like someone used a rototiller on the turf, as they use their tusks to dig up their dinner,” said Jack Altevers, a park ranger supervisor.

The pigs regularly loop around the park, starting and ending their days in the river bottom, he said.

Wild pigs have been reported in the Santa Ana River since the 1970s, said Chanelle Davis, a biologist with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. Most are descendants of domestic pigs who escaped or were set free from old farms around the river corridor and became feral, Davis said. Some bred with European wild boars, creating a wild boar/feral domestic pig hybrid that has evolved over time.

The omnivorous creatures are mostly found in meadows, marshes and woodlands near bodies of water, where the ground is fertile. They feed year-round on roots, grubs and invertebrates like earthworms and centipedes. They mainly hunt for food in the evening until early morning.

Though the Gardners haven’t seen pigs in their neighborhood for a few weeks, the family expects that to change closer to summer. They’ve also spotted the animals roaming the hills and damaging the field near Stagecoach Park in Corona, where recent winter rains have kept the grounds fertile.

“A well-watered lawn is very enticing for them — they tend to allow insects to be closer to the top of the soil where they can be easily detected by feral pigs,” said Davis, who said she’s seen reports of 20 to 30 pigs hunkering down in different areas.

Davis expects the pig population to grow, “based on pig biology and the lack of predators.”

“If there’s food, they’re going to procreate,” she said. “And there appears to be a lot of food.”

Corona police are also aware of the hogs and said there “may be hundreds” of wild pigs that frequent the field next to Corydon and Rincon streets. But they’ve never received a report of a pig attacking a human, Animal Control Supervisor Daniel Pacheco said. The parks department adjusted the watering schedule at Stagecoach Park, in hopes of reducing the grub.

The hogs are not razorbacks or wild boars, and some have tusks that help them root for food, county parks district officials have said. They are smaller, quicker and darker in color than average farm pigs, and can produce several litters of six to eight piglets a year.

The pigs were particularly active in the early 1990s, when officials estimated 300 to 400 roamed the Santa Ana River bottom. They frequently terrorized neighborhoods and farmland, even spooking horses.

Dustin McLain, chief of parks and resources for the county parks district, called the pigs a “known nuisance” because they destroy natural habitats and species, “moving from water source to water source.” They are territorial, but “transient” — meaning they normally hunker down during the day and run away from humans. But they can charge at people or objects, McLain said.

For example, an aggressive pig was shot in 1992 after attacking an off-duty Riverside police officer near the Jurupa Hills Golf Course in what’s now the city of Jurupa Valley.

During the 1990s, pigs wreaked so much havoc that Riverside County had plans to allow hunting permits in the Hidden Valley Wildlife Area and surrounding county lands in and around Riverside. Officials called it a “last-resort” attempt to control the growing number of wild pigs.

But state and county-sponsored hunts never happened because of county hunting laws, which strictly limit where firearms can be shot. There have also been fewer wild pig sightings over time, partially because of flooding and wildfires destroying their habitats.

The pig population fluctuates, depending on the amount of rainfall and food, but McLain said the county does not need state trapping or hunting permits. It has considered short hunts in the past, as recently as 2015.

“I don’t think it’s at the point where it’s too many pigs,” McLain said.

He believes that someday there should be a “management program that will at least keep their numbers low enough to where they’re not causing too much habitat destruction.”

But the Gardners and some neighbors, who find their lawns torn up over and over by hungry porkers, disagree. In December, residents attended a meeting with Corona leaders to discuss how to grapple with the pig problem.

Possible solutions include working with county and state agencies, and allowing trapping and hunting by private contractors. While sport hunting is not permitted, officials are considering allowing hunting if there is immediate danger.

Other possible steps include improving fencing on city-owned property, Corona police said.

So far, the city has shared information with residents, including a newsletter item on the do’s and don’ts of “coexisting with wild pigs in the community.”

“We’d like (Corona) to put up a fence in our neighborhood, round up the pigs and try to get them out of there,” Gardner said. “The streets are a mess. We can’t just live with it.”

I am seeing more and more first-hand examples of supply chain issues affecting aspects of everyday life.

I have a friend who took his guitar to a guitar tech for some work. He has been waiting weeks to have his instrument returned. The guitar can’t be finished because the guitar pickups, which amplify the instrument, are delayed in arriving from Japan.

Another friend complained to me after he went to the store to buy a popular brand of potato chips for a recipe. When he got to the store, this brand could not be found. He asked a manager if they had any in the back. He was told that the store didn’t have the chips because of problems in the supply chain.

Here at the U.S.-Mexico border, growth is booming as more companies attempt to hedge their risk by either building more production space in North America or by leasing extra space so that they can carry more inventory, all in an attempt to not be so vulnerable to delays in the supply chain.

The irony is that I personally know industrial real estate developers who are raring to construct more speculative space to lease so that they can take advantage of the hot market. However, they are being frustrated by the uncertainty of when items such as PVC pipe, steel and other construction components can be delivered. Apart from the delays, shortages have caused prices to rise, making construction more expensive than it was only a few months ago.

Supply chain disruptions, especially those associated with Asia, have to do with several factors. First is the fact that the pandemic has caused pent-up demand for consumer products. At the same time, it also has caused delays in production, and in many cases, a shortage of workers to unload containers. A shortage of truck drivers is causing empty containers to be stored in yards until a truck can come and get them so that they can be returned to their ship. Container ships have grown to enormous proportions and they simply take longer to unload. The largest ships can now transport what is the equivalent of more than 24,000 20-foot containers.

According to Sea-Intelligence, in September, two out of three container ships were behind schedule, with the average delay slightly more than a week. Container lines are desperately diverting their ships to smaller ports to try to save time. However, this sometimes results in longer trucking distances, adding to the logistics costs.

I have a friend who works for a major logistics company in Los Angeles. He told me that the shipping companies tend to go to the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles because of their infrastructure. Ships are now not only anchored in front of these ports waiting to be unloaded, they also are starting to line up on the coastline to the north. My friend lives off of the Pacific Coast Highway and is personally viewing this phenomenon. He says that the situation is not significantly improving, and his company is advising its clients to avoid Long Beach and Los Angeles. Some companies have started shipping to Seattle as an alternative, but many have scrapped this strategy because of the amount of congestion at that port.

While larger companies such as Walmart and Home Depot have commandeered their own container ships in order to try to control the delivery of products, smaller companies are finding themselves at the mercy of the crisis. Companies are booking their logistics on container ships months in advance to not be at the mercy of delays. In many cases, the cost of shipping a container from Asia to the U.S. has increased tenfold.

These cost increases are passed on to the consumer and we are seeing prices rise on a variety of products. The Federal Reserve refers to this inflation as “transitional” and temporarily associated with the pandemic. However, many economists believe that higher prices are not automatically going to go away once the vestiges of the pandemic are behind us. To the average consumer, the nomenclature or argument is irrelevant. Prices are higher right now and are taking a chunk out of people’s pocketbooks.

All the reports I have read on supply chain delays are predicting that disruptions will probably continue until next summer, but a longer-term view is warranted. As demand for products continues to increase, the capacity of U.S. seaports needs to be expanded. Trade with regions such as Asia and Europe is not going away any time soon. More commercial truck drivers need to be trained and put into action. More longshoremen need to be working on the docks. Finally, even though it will add to costs, companies need to establish multiple production and warehousing options to mitigate supply chain disruptions. Now is the time to put a plan together involving these elements, so that the supply chain can be better managed.
