Human actions in the drainage network of hydrographic basins interfere with the functioning of ecosystems, causing negative impacts on the environment. Among these impacts, mass loads with a high concentration of phosphorus (P) have a significant potential for point and diffuse pollution of freshwater. The objective of this work was to model P spatially in the Paraopeba River basin, namely in the main water course and 67 sub-basins, and temporally in the years of 2019, 2020, and 2021, after the rupture of B1 tailings dam of Vale, SA company in Brumadinho (Minas Gerais Brazil). The distribution of total phosphorus concentrations (Pt) in relation to environmental attributes (terrain slope, soil class, and land use) and stream flow was assessed with the help of SWAT, the well-known Soil and Water Assessment Tool, coupled with box-plot and cluster analyses. The Pt were obtained from 33 sampling points monitored on a weekly basis. Mean values varied from 0.02 to 1.1 mg/L and maximum from 0.2 to 15.9 mg/L across the basin. The modeling results exposed an impact on the quality of Paraopeba River water in a stretch extending 8.8–155.3 km from the B1 dam, related with the rupture. In this sector, if the contribution from the rupture could be isolated from the other sources, the average Pt would be 0.1 mg/L. The highest Pt (15.9 mg/L) was directly proportional to the urban area of a sub-basin intersecting the limits of Betim town and Belo Horizonte Metropolitan Region. In general, urban sprawl as well as forest-agriculture and forest-mining conversions showed a close relationship with increased Pt, as did sub-basins with a predominance of argisols and an accentuated slope (>20%). There were various moments presenting Pt above legal thresholds (e.g., >0.15 mg/L), mainly in the rainy season.

Collin County Politics: We’re in a War for Our Soul | The Psychological Hook

May 10, 2022

Picture: What a line-up of strong women marching for reproductive freedom! From left to right: Cassandra Hernandez (HD70), Caroline Werner (CCDP Chair), Angie Solomon (Plesa staffer) Iro Omere (CD4), Sheena King (HD61), Mihaela Plesa (HD70), and Elizabeth Michel (President of MADC).

Covid Update: Collin County has 215,289 confirmed Covid cases. That’s 796 more cases than I reported last week and 1,506 of our Collin residents have died (that’s an increase of 2 people). Our transmission rate is still low but a surge could still be coming as it gets hotter. The NY Times said they’re expecting the fall surge to start in the southern states as people head inside to get away from the heat.

Schools: With the election of some radical extremists to school boards, it’ll be interesting to watch how they fit in. For a while now, I’ve been wondering why so many school board trustees vote in lockstep with each other, almost as if they’re afraid to vote outside the majority. It turns out that there’s a reason!

Texas has this obscure education rule (because of course it does) that all 1,100-plus school boards in the state must undergo “Team of Eight” training for three hours each year. The teams consist of seven board members and the superintendent and the goal is to get everyone on the same page. That may sound good in theory but it’s terrible for democracy! We don’t vote people into office to get along; we vote for them to represent us and sometimes that requires disagreement. If group members always agree with each other, it turns into groupthink in which participants are afraid to voice contrary views. That’s how we got the Bay of Pigs and the Challenger disasters.

The radical extremists have shown they’re not afraid to buck the system. But that was when they were outside of it. We’ll see what they’ll do when they’re forced to work within it.

Commissioner’s Court: Cheryl Williams was absent again for the 34-minute meeting. How many meetings has she missed this year? With her $136,000 salary, we certainly pay her enough to actually show up. There was routine business but Joshua Murray’s public comment sure got them in a snit. This will never not be amusing. He began by saying he wanted to comment on an agenda item, the Turnover Report, but since they already voted on it, his comment doesn’t matter. This is an excellent point and one that should force them (not that they will) to put public comments back at the beginning of the meeting.

Murray expressed ongoing concern over staffing levels by pointing out that we have fewer county employees than Denton County which has 150,000 fewer people than Collin. While most cities within our county are growing like wildfire, there doesn’t seem to be any sense of urgency within the court about staffing. This isn’t surprising, of course, because they don’t care at all about services other than the Sheriff’s Department. That’s been clear for a while. I truly believe that every commissioner thinks their job is to keep taxes low and maintain a strong, ensure a punitive presence of law enforcement, and that’s it.

Rather than address several of Murray’s actual points, Susan Fletcher self-righteously nitpicked that the agenda item referenced was a FYI and not something they voted on. I’m unmoved by her nitpicking. It just so happened to be the case this time but if citizens need to comment on agenda items and can’t speak until the end of the meeting, our voices are silenced. I mean, that’s true in general since they rarely meet with or respond to those of us who disagree with them. In fact, Chris Hill actively blocks people (like me!) from commenting on his page and removes negative comments in general.

This would be illegal if he had an official page which is why he only has a “campaign” page (typical Republican sneakiness). Thus, there is no way for those who disagree with Hill, our elected representative, to talk with him. He won’t answer emails, allow you to comment on his Facebook page, or meet with you personally. Speaking at a meeting (which they purposefully schedule so most people can’t attend) is your only option. Thus, although they won’t listen to your opinion there either, putting public comments at the beginning of the meeting is at least performative inclusion.

It was clear that Murray got under Hill’s skin. Hill reiterated Fletcher’s non-point, concluding that “everything is in order.” Uh huh. Hill then melts down asking the county manager if the court had implemented programs authorizing bonuses for lateral moves, veterans, referrals, etc. to prove they’re doing something. Unfortunately for him, this wasn’t the “own” he seemed to think it was because, despite all these programs, they still have MAJOR problems with recruitment and retention at the jail. Hill sanctimoniously said the court works hard with the Sheriff’s Department and all of their departments (which he quickly hastened to add since he doesn’t want to show the clear favoritism to the Sheriff’s Department) to recruit new talent. Again, this isn’t great. What they’re doing isn’t working and Hill’s petulance is incredibly unattractive.

None of our stellar “leaders” addressed Murray’s overall point about the Turnover Report. For example, the Highway Patrol had a 60% turnover rate while the Detention employees had a 31% turnover with a 23% overall turnover rate for the entire Sheriff’s Department. This seems problematic but our “leaders” are too busy trying to show up Murray to actually deal with it. That will turn out well.

Frisco School Board: I’m heartbroken over the loss of Kelly Karthik, the only progressive in her race. Some are blaming her for being the “spoiler” in the Place 2 race, including her incumbent opponent, Natalie Hebert who lost to a radical extremist by 53 votes. By the way, this is a prime example of your vote having way more impact in local elections. Instead of blaming the thousands of dollars spent by conservative PACs on Lowe’s campaign, articulating a better message herself, or maybe not going out of town the week before Election Day, Hebert sent a nasty message to Karthik and two prominent Democratic activists. Wow! I can’t say I’m sorry she’s gone. She seems delightful.

Hebert actually told them they owe all FISD students an apology and they’re more terrible than Representative Jared Patterson and “more vile” than Trump (both of whom she’s supported in the past because duh, they’re Republicans), all because they tried to elect someone with progressive values. When screenshots of her poor loser rhetoric became public, Hebert doubled down. I’d love to tell you that people excoriated her for her terrible behavior but remember, these are Republicans. Of course, they didn’t! They’re not ones for personal accountability (unless you’re poor or a person of color) or civility (that’s for Democrats). No, they did what they always do: turned Hebert into a victim and blamed the “leaker” of the message. Who could’ve seen that coming? That’s what they do now when their poor behavior becomes public.

I could spend all day complaining about what happened in this race and how some Democrats immediately started blaming Karthik and those who voted for her but we’re better served if I enumerate the lessons learned instead.

To be clear, the 2 radical extremists just elected to the Frisco school board will be absolute disasters. There’s no doubt about that. But Democrats start running into trouble if we support “moderate” Republicans when there’s a better option. After all, we have “moderates” to blame for the unqualified hacks on the Supreme Court (thanks, Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski) and other judicial benches. If we want the country to move forward, we have to stop compromising our values and do the work!

Richardson School Board: There were several races across North Texas that should be quite instructive for Democrats and that includes the two RISD seats. Despite the Richardson Families First PAC spending thousands on these two races, one of the extremist candidates lost outright to Rachel McGowan (a progressive candidate) despite it being a 3-way race. The other extremist is in a run-off with Vanessa Pacheco, another progressive candidate. Yes, Richardson is bluer than many of the other cities in Collin County but they’ve demonstrated that we can take on the extremist PACs and win.

Local Politics: Run-offs are on May 24th. YOU MUST VOTE!! Here are some results from the municipal elections which many Democrats sat out. If we had shown up in Allen and Frisco, we’d have a lot more to celebrate.

Allen ISD: Incumbent Amy Gnadt is returning along with two radical extremists. Buckle up, Allen residents!

Allen City Council: Chris Schulmeister and Ben Trahan both won re-election. I mean, yay? I don’t love them but at least they weren’t as bad as their opponents.

Frisco ISD: Incumbent Gopal Ponangi barely eked out a win. Two radical extremists will join him on the board. Great job, Republicans!

Lovejoy ISD: Julie McLaughlin was the big winner in her race.

Murphy City Council: Both Elizabeth Abraham and Jene Butler, members of the Liberal Women of Collin County, won big. Woohoo! They too faced PAC money and personal attacks but kept focused. Congratulations!!

Parker City Council: Unfortunately, Edwin Smith didn’t win. Only 1,504 total votes were cast in that race. Smith deserved more support.

Prosper ISD: We held back the extremists (sort of) with the wins of Jorden Dial and Kelly Cavender. Garrett Linker, a strong conservative, won Place 6 by 23 votes (yet another example of how important voting in local elections is!). Let’s hope he isn’t too extreme and is willing to listen. By the way, Linker’s win was almost solely due to the people who live in Windfall…er, I mean Windsong Ranch in Denton County. They turned out to vote for him in droves. If only Democrats would vote like that!

Prosper City Council: Marcus Ray won his race.

Richardson ISD: Progressive candidate Rachel McGowan won her race. The other 2 races are in run-offs. Both progressive candidates Vanessa Pacheco (District 2) and Dr. Catalina Garcia (Dallas College) are still in the running. Richardson Democrats, YOU MUST SHOW UP ON MAY 24!!

When spiders unite, they can tie down a lion.

Given all the GOP money poured into our municipal races, it’s clear they outspent and out-organized us. We could despair about this because we’re in a terrible situation. But then we’ll never get out of it. We could decide to vote only for the least worst Republicans. But if you vote for a cold instead of the flu, you’re still sick. Or (and this is the solution I like) each and every one of you can stop complaining and start doing something. Voting is no longer enough; you need to do more. If the Ukrainian people had meekly complied or merely grumbled when an overwhelming force arrived to conquer them, they’d be under Russian control right now. We need to show the same kind of courage.

Part of this courage means not voting for the least nasty Republicans (who are getting harder to find) or, even worse, not running our own candidates. Not running Democrats is an awful long-term strategy. It gives us no chance to elect progressive people to serve. None. Sane people wanting a fresh alternative to tired candidates without solutions or (even worse) with terrible ideas will have nowhere to turn. Many will likely stop voting because why bother.

All this “strategy” of voting for Republicans when there are progressive options does is nullify any influence Democrats might have because Republicans will realize they don’t have to consider our wishes. If they know we’ll always reliably vote for their least awful candidate, then why reach out to us and try to earn our support? They don’t and they won’t. We’ll be without any power at all.

I know many are against splitting the vote when we run a “spoiler” because it will end up with a radical extremist in office. After yesterday’s election, we now have several extremists in leadership positions and it’s horrific but there are several silver linings. This may wake some people up to how important local politics are and stimulate activism. We’ve been letting the extremists control the narrative for far too long. Maybe we have – at long last – hit bottom.

If establishment Republicans grasp that Democrats won’t just go along with the program, that we’ll work for progressive candidates, they may truly understand their dilemma. In the Frisco race, it was obvious that the loser Hebert counted on getting Democrat support. That’s why she blamed us when she lost. Her tantrum was embarrassing but I hope other Republicans take note. If Democratic votes aren’t certain, they’ll have to work against radical extremists themselves and this means working with us. Politics is a game of compromise. So far, we’ve been the only ones doing that. No more. We need to make them recognize they need to give us something too.

Although it feels yucky right now, there’s no need to despair. As I keep saying, municipal elections are low turnout races. As demonstrated at least twice in this election cycle, wins can be accomplished by only a few votes. WE CAN DO THIS!! But it means starting to work now and not waiting until a few weeks before the next election. Republicans can outspend us but we can out-organize them. They did it in Georgia in 2020 and we can do it here.

Democracy requires participation which is why each and every one of us must step up and do more. Consider running for office. Sign up to join the team covering your city council or school board. Everyone is welcome. Contact me at [email protected] and let me know you’re interested.

CIF Softball: Another Millikan Comeback Carries Rams To Semifinals – The562.org

The562’s high school baseball and softball coverage for the 2022 season is sponsored by LBUSD Board of Education Member Megan Kerr

Thursday was deja vu all over again for Millikan softball.

On Tuesday, the Rams erased an early deficit and scored four late runs to beat La Habra. In the CIF Southern Section Division 2 quarterfinals two days later at South Hills, Millikan erased an early deficit and scored four runs in the seventh inning to come back and beat the Huskies 7-5 in dramatic fashion.

Millikan will visit Corona Centennial on Saturday for its first semifinal appearance since 2005 when the Rams won a CIF championship.

“This feels good and I love it,” Millikan third baseman Ari Ramirez said. “I can’t wait to go back to school tomorrow and tell people we made history.”

The Rams trailed 4-3 in the seventh inning when Erica Estrada, Katie Knarr and Ari Ramirez led off the inning with singles. Ramirez’ single scored Estrada to tie the game, and then after Shorty Wright drew a walk to load the bases, Mikaela Pacheco delivered a 2 RBI double to put Millikan ahead. Wright scored on a ground ball to cap the four-run inning.

“It’s hard to put into words how badly we want to win,” said Pacheco, who had the walk-off hit in the second round against La Habra. “I wanted to hit the ball so badly and win for these girls. I care about them so much.”

Millikan starting pitcher Ava Schaffel didn’t make it out of the first inning because of control issues, but All-Moore League pitcher Victoria Byrum made a triumphant return to the circle. The junior had missed the last two months due to injury, and Thursday was her first appearance since March 17.

“I never doubt (Schaffel) but I always stay ready no matter what,” Byrum said. “This team is very encouraging and helped me so it definitely showed on the field after not playing for months. My team believing in me really helped me in this game.”

Byrum scattered four hits over 6.1 innings while striking out nine and stranding 13 runners on base. She came back out in the bottom of the seventh with her first lead of the day, and after an intentional walk and a single put runners on with no outs, she limited South Hills to one run in the final frame to secure the win.

“When I felt early on that Ava didn’t have her stuff as much I had to keep a short leash on her and that was the strategy to get (Byrum) in,” Lehr said.

With the bases loaded in the seventh, Byrum got Huskies star first baseman Joie Economides to roll over a changeup for the last out of the game.

“It took us a while to get her changeup in the groove but it worked on the last pitch,” Lehr said. “She’s been chomping at the bit for at least three weeks. She has wanted this moment. She was able to channel all of that energy and did a really good job for us today.”

South Hills used a pair of walks, a miss played ball in the outfield and a passed ball to take a 2-0 lead in the first inning and chase Schaffel. When Byrum came out of the bullpen with runners on and two outs, Ramirez came over to pick up her pitcher.

“I told her, ‘You’ve been wanting this. I know you want your name in the article. So, do you’,” Ramirez told Byrum.

Byrum said she’s been able to work on increasing the spin on her curveball, and said that pitch was key to keeping the potent South Hills offense batting defensively.

Millikan cut the lead to 2-1 in the top of the second inning when Pacheco led off the inning by reaching on an illegal pitch from South Hills starter Audrey Gallegos. She moved to second on Camila Lara’s sacrifice bunt, and scored on Robin Garcia’s two-out RBI single to left field.

South Hills got the run right back in the bottom of the third inning thanks to a pair of walks and a seeing eye infield single. The score remained 3-1 South Hills until the top of the fifth inning when Millikan put together a two-out rally.

Knarr doubled with two outs, Ramirez was intentionally walked, and then Wright blasted a 2 RBI triple to deep center field to tie the game 3-3.

South Hills retook the lead 4-3 in the bottom of the fifth on Isabella Venegas’ RBI single through the right side.

That one-run advantage lasted until the seventh with Millikan scoring four runs, and at no time were the Rams panicking in their dugout because they knew they could come back in any game— like they did on Tuesday.

“I don’t like to panic,” Ramirez said. “I like to trust my team and have hope.”

“I don’t think we need to say anything at this point,” Lehr said of motivating her team after another sloppy start. “We all knew we were disappointed in the first inning. But you don’t have to sit here and lecture these girls. They know, and they just keep fighting. No matter what has gone wrong they just let it go and they beat it with the bats.”

Millikan finished with eight hits and five different spots in the lineup scored runs. Pacheco had the biggest hit of the day in the seventh, just like she did in the second round, and she almost wasn’t even part of this Rams team.

“We almost passed on her and put her on JV,” Lehr said of Pacheco. “I tell her all of the time that she was the one who almost slipped through the cracks. She’s just been so clutch for us.”

“I am surprised that I came up as a sophomore and started and am doing these things,” Pacheco said. “I used (being the last girl to make the Varsity squad) as motivation because I wanted to prove that I deserved to be on Varsity and I can do things for these girls.”

This is the first season as head coach for Lehr, and she’s been candid about the fact that her team wasn’t exactly receptive when she took over last year.

“Coming in we were very structured and that rubbed some of the girls the wrong way,” Lehr said. “My philosophy is a little bit different than what they’re used to. When my team hates me in the beginning and now is all excited and excited to play for us, hell yeah that means more. Change is hard. The fact that we were able to do this with a big change, it just goes to show this team is so talented.”

“I think it does (mean more) with new coaches and a new program and system,” Ramirez said of the success. “It means a lot. We just opened our minds up and put our guard down. We had so much love for our last coach and I think we just didn’t want to have love for the new coach. So, I think opening up to them was the key.”

Four Big 12 Teams Advance to NCAA Women’s Golf Championships

Four Big 12 women’s golf teams are moving on to the NCAA Championships, led by Baylor’s victory at the Stillwater Regional on Wednesday.

Baylor and Oklahoma State advanced out of the Stillwater Regional, while Texas and TCU advanced out of the Albuquerque Regional. In addition, two Iowa State players — Ruby Chou and Taglao Jeeravivitaporn — advanced as individuals.

The NCAA Championships will be held at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona, from May 20-25.

Baylor ended up with a 14-shot victory after shooting an even-par third round of 288, which led the Bears to a three-day score of 1-over-par 865.

Arizona State finished second at 15-over-par 879. Oklahoma State, which hosted the regional, tied for third with Auburn, with both finishing with a 17-over-par 881.

Baylor ended up with a brilliant final day, as Gurleen Kaur, Britta Snyder and Rosie Belsham all finished in a tie for second, each shooting a 214. Kaur wrapped up her tournament with a final-round 72, while Snyder and Belsham each shot a 71.

Addie Baggarly fired a final-round 74 for a three-round total of 223, while Hannah Karg shot a final-round 77 with a three-round total of 232.

Oklahoma State’s Maddison Hinson-Tolchard won the individual portion of the event with a three-round total of 212, punctuated by a final-round 69. Han-Hsuan Yu (74-76-74—224), Rina Tatematsu (74-74-77—225), Lianna Bailey (76-81-71—228) and Hailey Jones (82-77-73—232) helped get the Cowgirls out of regionals.

Texas finished with a 1-under-par 863 for the Albuquerque Regional, finishing three shots behind Florida, which finished 4-under-par 860. Georgia finished third with an 866 while TCU finished fourth with an 874, one shot ahead of Florida, which finished fifth. Oklahoma was also in the regional and finished ninth with an 895.

Bentley Cotton (68-75-73—216) led the way for the Longhorns to finish in a tie for sixth place overall. Bohyun Park (76-72-70—218) and Sara Kouskova (73-72-73—218) each finished in a tie for 11th place. Brigitte Thibault (72-78-70—220) finished in a tie for 17th while Sophie Guo (74-71-77—222) finished in a tie for 25th.

TCU’s Sabrina Iqbal (68-73-72—213) finished in a tie for third overall. Caitlyn Macnab (72-71-74—217) slipped into the Top 10 with a tie for eighth. Lois Lau (77-71-75—223) finished in a tie for 33rd, Valeria Pacheco (76-76-72—224) tied for 37th and Trinity King (76-77-73—226) tied for 45th.

Oklahoma’s players included Hannah Screen (71-74-72—217), Libby Winans (75-77-72—224), Mikhaela Fortuna (76-75-74—225), Maria Fernanda Martinez (77-78-75—230) and Meagan Winans (79-77-76—232).

Chou and Jeeravivitaporn slipped into the NCAA Championships as they were the top two finishers not attached to an advancing team. USC won the regional, followed by LSU, Stanford and Purdue.

Chou finished seventh (68-73-70—211) while Jeeravivitaporn was tied for 10th (71-71-71—213).

Heart Healthy Avocados

Health prevention comes down to a risk reduction number-game.  Primary prevention serves as a term describing how to keep a healthy person healthy.  At the point of primary prevention, we don’t know who is going to develop which disease so we treat a lot of people the same way trying to prevent as many as possible from getting a particular disease.  In conducting this study researchers wanted to learn if eating more avocados would affect the later development of cardiovascular disease.  From statistical analysis of women in the NHS (Nurses’ Health Study) and men from the HPFS (Health Professionals Follow-up Study; 1986-2016) they found a significant drop in cardiovascular disease risk accompanied avocado consumption.

The numbers game of primary prevention makes studies like these somewhat difficult and expensive.  When looking a dietary intervention like this, clear answers are difficult due to how many study subjects are needed and how many years it takes to see if it made any different. We need a large number because some of the group would never develop the disease regardless of the treatment but we don’t know who will and who won’t.  Again, that leaves us treating a lot of seemingly healthy people the same way.

The study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association analyzed data from the NHS and the HPFS to find that those study individuals who ate half of an avocado twice a week had a 16% lower later incidence of cardiovascular disease and a 21% lower incidence of heart disease.  They looked at over 68 thousand women in the NHS and over 41 thousand men in the HPFS.  These study participants were considered free of cancer, heart disease and stroke history at the time of study entry.  They followed these individuals for 30 years to count how many developed various diseases while monitoring various lifestyle factors with periodic questionnaires.

Those individuals who reported higher rates of avocado consumption were documented to have these lower rates of cardiovascular disease and heart disease.  They believe that the replacement of saturated and other unhealthy fats with these good fats in avocados played a role in that reduction.  Avocados offer a high content of mono-unsaturated fatty acids and polyunsaturated fatty acids along with other nutrients.  The most commonly consumed avocado option in the United States is the Hass avocado which contains an average 13 grams of oleic acid (for a medium sized fruit).

Besides the good fats like oleic acid, they also contain a good mount of fiber, potassium, magnesium, and folate.   Beyond these commonly recognized nutrients, they also contain other phytonutrients and biologically active compounds that act as antioxidants.  In other studies, increase intake of avocados has been linked with higher good cholesterol (HDL), lower rates of metabolic syndrome, and lower body weights.

With this insight into a simple dietary change, consider how you might do a little primary prevention of your own.  Adding some avocado into your weekly meal fare a couple of times per week could lower your risk of heart disease.  Combining this small change with other small changes over a number of years could give you a few more healthy years later in life.  Living a healthier more abundant life requires a little upfront investment of wise choices so you enjoy the payoffs later in life.
