Marvel’s Edge of the Spider-Verse Series Launches This Summer

Marvel’s Edge of the Spider-Verse Series Launches This Summer

The Spider-Verse is very much in vogue right now, so of course Marvel is about to revisit the 2014 crossover event that saw Peter Parker teaming up with a wide array of multiversal doppelgangers. Starting in August, Marvel will launch Edge of the Spider-Verse, a brand new five-issue anthology series. This in turn will set the stage for End of the Spider-Verse later in 2022.

Each issue of Edge of the Spider-Verse features three different stories. Some of these tales will catch readers up on previously established spider-variants like Spider-Man Noir and Spider-Gwen. However, others will bring new characters into the mix. One of the latest additions is Night-Spider, who hails from a universe where Felicia Hardy got spider powers instead of Peter. There’s also the Hunter-Spider, a Kraven variant who gained his own powers in a very “unusual” way. Additionally, the series’ creators will introduce Spider-Laird, whom Dan Slott claims is “the first kilt-wearing hero of the Spider-Verse.”

Slott is the former writer of Amazing Spider-Man and the original Spider-Verse event. He’s returning to the franchise in Edge of the Spider-Verse with a team of collaborators that includes co-scribes Alex Segura and Karla Pacheco. Superstar artist Mark Bagley is also working on the series with a few other illustrators who have yet to be announced. Their combined work will eventually build toward End of the Spider-Verse, which (as its title implies) is the final chapter in Marvel’s Spider-Verse saga.

“If you ask me, it’s madness,” said Slott in a recent interview with Polygon. “Why would they do this? WHY? They could’ve milked this spider-cash-cow for decades. That said, if you are going to do it, going all-out in a blaze of glory is definitely the way to go!”

Edge of the Spider-Verse #1 hits comic shops on August 3. You can view covers and designs for the new series in the gallery below.

Snow due for Tahoe could dust some Bay Area peaks

Brisk and chilly conditions ahead will bring a bit of snow to the San Francisco Bay Area’s highest locations, and a lot more to Lake Tahoe and the Sierra, the National Weather Service said.

“We do have a very cold air mass that continues to filter into the Bay Area in wake of a cold front that moved through earlier in the day,” meteorologist Roger Gass said Sunday afternoon.

That air means that scattered and isolated rain showers, unlikely to lead to significant local rainfall, could instead yield snowfall atop elevated locations like the South Bay’s Pacheco Pass and Mount Umunhum and the East Bay’s Mount Diablo, Gass said.

Cold-air lows should drop to 2,500 feet in the North Bay’s interior valleys and parts of the East Bay through early Monday, with accumulations from a dusting up to an inch. He added: “It’s going to be very hit-or-miss as far as snow actually occurring or, you know, actually doing enough to accumulate and stick in the hills or the ground.”

Uphill from the Bay, a winter-weather advisory in effect until 11 p.m. Sunday means snow could happen down around 2,500 feet, with 1 to 3 inches of snow likely at lower elevations and 3 to 7 inches above about 4,000 feet along the northern Sierra’s western slope.

Closer to home, Bay Area residents can expect brief scattered and isolated showers with partly sunny skies and gusty winds, as well as lows dropping into the high 30s and low 40s in interior North and East Bay valleys and the low to mid-40s overnight.

Similar conditions are expected Monday and Tuesday, with drier, warmer air boosting temperatures into the high 60s to low 70s from midweek, Gass said: “That warming trend will continue into early next week, and it looks like we may even see 80s to low 90s return by Saturday and Sunday.”

The world is running out of oil — vegetable oil | The Star

It’s funny how we sometimes take the simple things in life for granted. Cooking oil is certainly one of them, though our appreciation for vegetable oil could soon reach new heights.

Prices have increased by 25 per cent just in the last six months. Palm oil went up 50 per cent, while canola oil is up 55 per cent on average. The world is slowly running out of vegetable oil.

Vegetable oils are not just about frying things — the ingredient is in many things we eat. All household kitchens and restaurants use vegetable oils. Major companies will buy vegetable oils to manufacture the food we buy daily. Pasta, cookies, chocolate, cookies, mayonnaise, and many dry and baked goods contain vegetable oil; it is one of the most universal and versatile ingredients we have at our disposal.

Palm oil is the big one, given how affordable it is. Indonesia, the largest producer in the world, recently announced that the country would ban exports of palm oil, starting in late April. Indonesia accounts for 55 per cent of palm oil exports. It’s huge. Since the price of palm oil increased by 40 per cent there, the government believed it had no other choice. Malaysia, the second-largest exporter, is experiencing unprecedented labour shortages affecting palm oil production. The country accounts for nearly a third of palm oil exports, according to the Observatory of Economic Complexity.

Although many condemn the use of this oil for environmental reasons, many large companies buy the product. Nestlé, Mondelez, Ferrero — most of the big food companies need it, and we eat it every day.

For sunflower oil, the situation is even worse. Ukraine, the victim of an atrocious invasion, is the largest exporter in the world. In 2021/22, the country exported over six million tonnes of sunflower oil, about half of the globe’s supply. Russia, responsible for another quarter of sunflower oil exports, will have difficulty finding customers due to sanctions imposed against it.

For canola oil, Canada, the largest exporter, must contend with last year’s abysmal season. The drought was so severe that our country had to import canola to meet our own demand for vegetable oil. So, there were hardly any reserves to start 2022.

And finally, there is soybean oil, with Argentina, Paraguay and Brazil ranking among the largest exporters. The three countries were also hit by major droughts and anemic production in recent years, creating supply problems everywhere.

Even if other major vegetable oil-exporting countries like Holland and Germany have good harvests in 2022, it will not be enough to cover the anticipated deficit this year, and possibly not next year either. The importance of an ingredient that we have all taken for granted in our kitchens will be much more evident.

One measure that could help is to lessen the amount of vegetable oil used for energy. About 15 per cent of all vegetable oils are used to support the production of biofuels. We could perhaps see some countries divert some of that production for more cooking oils, but that’s far from a given.

As we navigate through this global food crisis, we are expecting more countries to instinctively ban exports and even hoard commodities to secure food supplies. Each decision will add more pressure to the market, raising prices across the board. Over the next several months, things will most certainly get to a point where many will experience famine or acute hunger — perhaps more than 100 million people. Devastating.

Despite all of this, as Canadians, we’re the lucky ones. If your grocer is rationing vegetable oil, don’t be surprised. As consumers, we should feel lucky just to have access to some vegetable oils.

Wilmer Valderrama and also Fiancé é Amanda Pacheco Reveal Baby Girl’s Name – E! Online – UK

The Keto Diet List – Medical News Bulletin

A ketogenic diet is a low carbohydrate, moderate protein, and high fat diet to allow ketosis to occur throughout the day. When insulin levels in the body are low, the process of ketosis burns body fat for energy. Some benefits of a ketogenic diet may include weight loss, appetite control, and lowered blood pressure. Always speak with your doctor before changing your diet, to make sure it is right for you.

The Standard Ketogenic Diet, which is the most popular version of the keto diet, recommends 75% fat, 20% protein, and 5% carbohydrates.1

Low carbohydrate intake

Carbohydrate intake should generally be under 50 grams per day to maintain ketosis. If your main reason for following the keto diet is weight loss, the amount of carbohydrates in your diet should be limited to 20–25 grams per day. It would be best to spread out consumption of carbohydrates throughout the day in order to meet nutrient requirements with each meal.2

1. Vegetables

Dark leafy greens, such as kale and spinach, are low in carbohydrates and sodium, in addition to being high in essential vitamins and minerals. Other options for leafy greens include brussel sprouts, cabbage, iceberg lettuce, and fennel.

Vegetables are low-carb and have numerous benefits, such as improving gut health, reducing the risk of metabolic diseases like heart disease, and aiding weight management. Aim to eat vegetables at every meal.

Vegetables that are high in fiber, such as cauliflower, digest slowly so can help you to feel full for longer.

Although aromatics like onions and leeks add flavour, they contain natural sugars so be aware of portion sizes. Limit starchy root vegetables, such as any form of potato, parsnips, and beetroot.

Some examples of the amount of carbohydrates in certain vegetables are:

2. Fruits

Sweetener and sugar intake needs to be limited on a ketogenic diet. Fresh fruits are a great alternative and help regulate blood sugar levels. Berries are high in fiber and rich in antioxidants that reduce inflammation and protect against disease. In addition to strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries, avocados and coconut are the best fruits to include in a ketogenic diet. A study found that people who ate one avocado per day experienced improvements in heart health risk factors, such as reduced levels of LDL cholesterol.3

Some examples of the amount of carbohydrates in certain fruits include:

Moderate Protein Intake

Protein is an essential building block for the body. It helps maintain bone density and strength, in addition to helping repair internal tissues and organs. Protein intake should be approximately 40–50 grams per day for women and 50–60 grams for men on a ketogenic diet. People on ketogenic diets should avoid eating a large amount of protein. This is because it is possible to come out of ketosis and instead undergo gluconeogenesis, which is when the liver converts protein into glucose.

3. Meats and poultry

Meats and poultry are a source of lean protein and can help you feel fuller for longer. Eat a moderate level of meat, including pork, lamb, and poultry.

Skinless chicken breast, ground beef, and lamb contain no carbohydrates. Processed meats like bacon and sausages should be limited, as they are associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease.

4. Plant-based protein alternatives

Plant-based protein alternatives are a good option for those who do not eat meat. For instance, a cup of tofu contains four grams of carbohydrates and 20 grams of protein.

5. Eggs

Eggs are a filling and versatile option as they are low in carbohydrates and a good source of protein, B vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.

One large egg contains less than 1 gram of carbohydrates and approximately 6 grams of protein.

6. Fish

Fish is a good source of protein, B vitamins, potassium, and selenium. Oily fish, such as mackerel, salmon, tuna, and sardines, are high in essential omega-3 fatty acids, which have been found to lower blood sugar levels and increase insulin sensitivity.

7. Dairy

Cheese is high in saturated fat. However, avoid too much cheese and nuts, as they are significantly high in protein.

Plain Greek yogurt and cottage cheese are nutritious, high protein foods, that can be eaten in moderation on a ketogenic diet. They are helpful in reducing appetite and promoting feelings of fullness.

Although dairy products are high in fat, some dairy, such as milk and yoghurt, do contain some carbohydrates in the form of lactose.

High fat intake4

According to the American Heart Association, fats are a vital part of the diet. Fats are essential for the production of fatty acids, as well as being the source of fat-soluble vitamins, such as vitamins A, D, and E.

Although it is possible to have a good amount of fat on a ketogenic diet, it is advisable to choose healthy fats and not to snack in between meals. There are four types of ketogenic-approved fats: saturated, polyunsaturated, monounsaturated, and naturally occurring trans fats. It can be challenging to obtain enough fat without eating too much protein.

8. Healthy oils

Use healthy oils, such as extra virgin, hazelnut, avocado, or coconut.

9. Nuts and seeds

Nuts and seeds are high in fat and low in carbohydrates, as well as being a good source of dietary fiber and magnesium. Choose unsalted nuts as salted nuts can be addictive and lead to overeating.

What should be avoided?

Sweets and high-carbohydrate snacks should be avoided as they contain high levels of trans fats that are associated with weight gain, increased blood sugar, and raised cholesterol levels.

Limit alcohol and avoid juices and sodas; instead, drink water, unsweetened sparkling water, or unsweetened tea and coffee.

Avoid grains, refined sugar, sugar alcohols, and refined vegetable oils. Grains, such as rice, bread, pasta, cereal, and crackers are high in carbohydrates. Sugar, honey, maple syrup, and other forms of sugar are high in carbohydrates and low in nutrients. Avoid margarine as this is a form of processed food.

Always speak to a healthcare professional before starting a new dietary regime. It is important to make sure you are getting enough nutrients while maintaining ketosis. Remember to stay hydrated and avoid sugar and sweeteners. Be aware of side effects, such as dizziness, fatigue, and digestive changes.
