Sign of solidarity: German foreign minister Baerbock visits Ukraine DW News

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock arrived in Ukraine on Tuesday on the first trip there by a Cabinet member since the Russian invasion on February 24. Her surprise visit comes as Germany continues to face criticism over its previous policy toward Russia, which has been widely perceived as placing economic interest over human rights concerns, notably in the area of energy exports. However, Berlin is now giving considerable military support to Ukraine to help it fight off Russia’s invasion in a radical break with former restrictions on sending arms to conflict regions.

Supervisors Promise Better Conditions for Troubled Youth, Better Pay for Social Workers

The Fresno County Board of Supervisors started their second meeting of the year on Tuesday thanking the department of social services for their efforts in finding placement for troubled youth.

After last year’s media headlines brought attention to troubled youth under CPS custody living in unsafe and unsanitary conditions, the county vowed to make things better for foster youth and social workers.

“As politicians, you are not going to make everyone happy,” said Supervisor Brian Pacheco. “Nothing is perfect, but we need to keep moving forward.”

Placing Foster Youth Is Focus for DHS Interim Director

The newly named interim director of Social Services, Maria Aguirre, was accompanied by colleagues Tricia Gonzalez and Catherine Martindale, who described the challenges of finding homes for troubled youth.

Maria Aguirre took over as interim director of Fresno County’s Department of Social Services in December 2021. (GV Wire File)

Supervisor Brian Pacheco complimented the new director on her performance after taking an interim position from former DHS director Delfino Neira.

“As I had mentioned before, as being part of this community and working for child welfare for many years, I am committed,” said Aguirre. “This is a very important task for me, this has been my priority task as interim director and will continue to be my focus.”

Where Are Fresno County Youth Held?

In the fall of 2021 when it was revealed that children under CPS custody were being housed in harsh conditions, the county moved many of the troubled youth into a temporary facility — the former University Medical Center campus near the Fresno fairground.

Since then, children have been provided with hot meals, access to showers, and on-site security. But the opening of a new facility in Clovis was pushed back from November until mid-2022.

While the building is finished, it isn’t open because of supply chain issues and staffing shortages.

Supervisors Say They Have No Power Over Youth

At least 20 at-risk youth stayed up to three nights in November. In December, that number dropped to one but picked up again in January with at least five youth currently held at the temporary facility on the old UMC campus.

“Unfortunately, I believe that number will continue to grow,” said Gonzalez. “With the lack of placement capacity and also with the choices that the children make.”

Children and youth can often walk in and out of the facilities and also refuse placement. They are often runaways, victims of trauma and abuse, or are being sexually exploited.

Gonzalez says they try to find short-term and long-term placement solutions, including reaching out to relatives and utilizing a new strike team to help look for them.

Which prompted Supervisor Nathan Magsig to ask whether the county has any parental rights over the youth at all.

“They can come and go as they please, they can refuse a placement, anywhere, so how is it that we have all this responsibility and yet no authority?,” asked Magsig.

Legislative Help?

At the moment, placement is a priority for the department due to a shortage of places to go throughout the state.

To combat the issue, DSS is looking to promote a community-wide campaign to help recruit homes and families to take troubled youth in.

They have also developed a strike team that will respond to troubled youth and collaborate on ways to help find placements.

The department is also offering training for social workers beginning this month that will aid them in mental health and other crisis interventions.

For long-term solutions, DSS says it will submit a state application for a temporary shelter that will help teens with mental health issues. However, a funding source is yet to be identified.

Aguirre said the county must advocate for legislative change.

“I think you have been very supportive and I appreciate that,” said Aguirre. “I think advocating at the state level is really important and what we need to continue to work.”

Social Workers Will See A Hike in Pay

Apart from the issue of how youth have been treated while under the custody of Fresno County, social workers are advocating for better pay.

They have claimed that they are bogged down with severe staffing shortages, paperwork, and little training to deal with troubled youth.

Fresno County DSS workers protested at City Hall in October 2021 after attending a Fresno County Board of Supervisors Meeting. (SEIU 521)

The supervisors all agree that Fresno County must offer competitive pay and will work with the human resources department to settle on a pay rate that matches other surrounding counties.

“We have a good contract, but we still need to be competitive with our surrounding counties, as a chairman and member of this board, I don’t believe any of our employees should be leaving another county for a higher rate of pay,” said Pacheco. “We are the largest county and should lead in that effort as well.”

Magsig agreed that pay should be competitive while thanking DSS and the employees that work in the department.

A comp study will be presented to the board before a final decision on pay rate is formally decided. However, Pacheco proposed a deadline of no later than June 1.

Augsburg 33, Wisconsin-Stevens Point 10 – The Guillotine

MINNEAPOLIS — Winning five of the six bouts wrestled by technical falls in the dual meet, the No. 6-ranked Augsburg University women’s wrestling team scored a 33-10 victory over the No. 11-ranked University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point on Sunday afternoon.

Augsburg won all six of the competitive matches in the dual, with five wins coming by technical falls. Both teams had two forfeits in the dual-meet portion of the afternoon.

In the only meeting of ranked wrestlers on the day, Augsburg’s Marlynne Deede (JR, Springville, Utah/Springville HS), ranked No. 4 in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association’s NCAA national rankings at 155 pounds, moved up to 170 and dispatched UW-Stevens Point’s Jade Herzer, ranked No. 5 at 170, with a 10-0, first-period technical fall. Deede got a takedown and two-point back exposure in quick succession 20 seconds into the bout, then got three takedowns to finish the match at the 1:50 mark. Deede is now 7-1 on the season with six technical falls.

Making her collegiate season debut after winning world championships at the junior and U-23 levels this summer, Emily Shilson (JR, Maple Grove, Minn./Mounds View HS) was dominant in a 40-second, 10-0 technical fall win over the Pointers’ Angelica Torres-Lima at 116 pounds. The top-ranked wrestler nationally at 109, Shilson scored a takedown 13 seconds into the bout, then used a gut wrench to quickly rack up four back exposures and end the action early. Shilson is now 23-0 in her collegiate career, with 13 of those wins coming by technical fall and eight coming by pin.

Nina Makem (FY, Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee HS) made an impressive home dual-meet debut, needing just 40 seconds to end her 143-pound match early with the Pointers’ Megan Struble in a 12-0 win. Now 8-2 on the season with seven technical falls, Makem dove in on a double-leg for a four-point throw just nine seconds into the action, scored a pair of exposures on a cradle, then ended the match with another four-point move.

Katie Lange (FY, Sherburn, Minn./Martin County West HS) improved to 8-0 on the season with a 1:16, 10-0 win over Megan Struble at 143 pounds. She opened with a takedown and back exposure to take a 4-0 lead, then claimed another takedown and used a leg lace to convert two back exposures to end the bout. All eight of Lange’s wins have been bonus-point triumphs, with five technical falls and three pins.

Kya Rybachek (SO, Mountain Iron, Minn./Hibbing HS) improved to 4-5 on the season with a 10-0 technical fall win over Morgan Bethea at 130 pounds. Rybachek scored a takedown 75 seconds into the bout, then scored a four-point move on a dive after a quick restart with 1:10 left in the first period. She then used a front headlock throw to convert another four-point move, ending the match.

Gabby Skidmore (JR, Spooner, Wis./Cumberland HS) improved to 9-2 on the season with a 4-0 victory over the Pointers’ Abby Nelson at 123 pounds. Skidmore scored a force-out point for the lone point of the first period, then gained a passivity point and scored a takedown with 1:20 left in the match to gain the victory.

There were seven exhibition matches following the dual, with four bouts featuring Auggie wrestlers against each other. Faith Tuttle (JR, North St. Paul, Minn./North St. Paul HS) scored a pair of pins at 191 pounds, Destynie Pacheco (JR, El Paso, Texas/Pebble Hills HS) gained a win at 155 and Melissa Jacobs (JR, Belle Plaine, Minn./Belle Plaine HS (Scott West)) scored a pin at 191.

Mya Velasquez (SO, Santa Maria, Calif./Pioneer Valley HS) scored a 8-3 win over UW-Stevens Point’s Addison Young at 136.

FOR THE FOES

UW-Stevens Point’s team points in the dual came on a pair of forfeits in the opening two bouts.

Megan Struble scored a 10-0, 2:06 technical fall in a 143-pound exhibition, and No. 5-ranked Jade Herzer scored a second-period pin at 170.

UP NEXT: Both teams are in action at the North Central College Invitational next Saturday (12/11) at 9 a.m. in Naperville, Ill.

Kyocera Advanced Ceramic Perfect Peeler – Product Review – Best Vegetable Peeler Ever?

Kyocera Peeler – Best vegetable peeler ever?

Grab your peeler now

Hi and welcome back to Whats4Chow.com Today’s episode is the second in a series of product reviews covering Kyocera’s range of ceramic kitchen equipment. In the previous episode I introduced the Kyocera ceramic knives, and now we’re going to have a look at the Kyocera peeler.

Before we continue, Kyocera is not paying for this review. They were kind enough to send me a few of their products to try out, these are my opinions of the products, and they will not be viewing this video before it goes live.

I must confess that I have had this peeler unpacked for a while and re-packed it only to show everyone how it is packaged. My first impressions of this peeler are that it is absolutely beautiful, with a big soft-touch, chunky handle for good grip, even with wet hands. The molding of the handle is superb with no burrs or imperfections that could lead to discomfort. And that is only the beginning… this peeler has secret powers too…

The cutting head of the peeler swivels through 360 degrees. This allows you to use this peeler left or right-handed, or as a pull peeler or a side peeler. The blade can also be set at 45 degrees in either left or right-handed configuration.

Above all, this peeler has Kyocera’s advanced ceramic blade. This blade is incredibly sharp and breezes through the tasks of peeling potatoes, carrots, and even tough jobs like butternut. Only very light pressure is required for regular peeling, however if you want to cut vegetable ribbons, applying just a tiny bit more pressure will give you amazing cucumber and carrot ribbons.

I must say that this is the most capable peeler I have ever come across, with a blade second to none. My favourite aspect of the peeler is definitely the grip. I have big hands, and regular peelers with their tiny handles are quite difficult for me hold securely, especially if my hands are wet. The left-handed feature also comes into play in a big way, as I am left-handed.

In summary, if you’re in the market for the most amazing peeler out there, you can’t go wrong with this one. It has the best grip, the best blade and serves both left-handed and right-handed users. I have left a link below where you can check it out. That’s it for today folks, and we’ll see you again real soon.

Wareham Man Accused of Shooting at Cops Indicted

A West Wareham who allegedly shot at two police officers and two civilians near the County Road Recycling Center has been indicted by a Plymouth County grand jury.

Gregory W. Schroth, 41, of 8 Reed Road, was indicted on four counts each of armed assault with intent to murder and assault with a dangerous weapon, and one count each of carrying a firearm without a license, carrying a loaded firearm without a license, possession of ammunition without a firearms license, and discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building, the Brockton Enterprise is reporting.

The indictment stems from a June 26 incident.

On that afternoon, Wareham officers Aaron Pacheco and Christopher Corner were dispatched to County Road Recycling for a report of a male trespasser, Wareham Police Chief John Walcek stated at the time. The officers searched the area but were not able to locate him. While speaking with the complainants, the officers heard three consecutive gunshots and realized they were being fired upon, Walcek’s statement said. The officers headed in the direction of the gunshots and observed a male on Reed Road carrying a rifle.

Officer Pacheco then stepped from his cruiser and ordered the man to put the rifle on the ground, but he allegedly refused. Officer Pacheco drew his firearm, commanding the man to put the rifle down; again the man refused, and began walking away toward a camper with the rifle in hand, according to Walcek. Officer Pacheco moved toward the man with his firearm pointed at him, backed up by Officer Corner. Finally, the male put the weapon down just inside the open door of the camper. The officers placed the man in custody and secured the weapon. After a brief search of the area, the officers located a 500-round box of .22 caliber rifle ammunition, Walcek stated.

At the time of his arrest, Schroth was charged with four counts of armed assault with intent to murder, possession of a firearm with an FID card, and discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling.

Walcek at the time praised his officers: “We had a very serious situation where two civilians and two police officers were in grave danger. The positive outcome of this incident is the result of a disciplined and professional response by two of Wareham’s finest officers. Aaron and Chris did an outstanding job and I am very proud of them.”

Best Vegetable Seeds Online For Gardeners – Archute

It is understandable if you are doubtful about buying vegetable seeds online because it can sometimes be frustrating if you don’t get high-quality seeds. Fortunately, we have gathered some tips to help you while purchasing quality products. Here are a few tips that will be useful when making these purchases:

1. Research

If you want to kick off your vegetable garden and there is a particular online seed store you are interested in, you will need to look or ask around for as much info about the place as possible. You could maybe go to the company’s website and look at the customer reviews of the product you want to purchase.

It would also help to ask any questions to the customer care section of the company to remove any doubts that you may have. Another tip on the same is that if a company has been in the business for a longer period, it will likely provide quality products.

2. Start slow

When you are starting, it should be more about experimenting and finding out what seeds you can grow and what yopu can not. So it is more advisable that you start slow and pick a seed that is not soo complicated to plant and take care of.

It is also ideal that you don’t purchase the vegetable seed in bulk for the first time. Again, it would be best to first pick seeds available in your local garden center or hardware store before picking from an online store that you know nothing about.

4. Shipment terms

If you purchase seeds online, you must check the shipping terms before ordering. In some cases, you might find that you are purchasing a single product, but you pay double for the shipment. In most cases, you will encounter that the shipment is free if you buy seeds online in bulk or at a lower price.

5. Check your climate

It would help if you learned as much about the vegetables you want to grow to save you the frustrations of purchasing seeds that you can’t grow. You also need to understand your climate because some climates are not suitable for certain types of crops. Then, when you conduct comprehensive research on the vegetable seed you want to grow, you will see which will work best for your climate.

6. Heirloom vs. Hybrid Seeds

You must understand the difference between heirloom seeds and hybrid seeds before yopu buy seeds online. A hybrid seed comes from the first generation of deliberate cross plants of different varieties. Heirloom seeds are the ones that come from plants that have been handed down for multiple generations.

Hybrid seeds can be a wonderful option if you look for specific qualities like disease resistance, cold or heat tolerance, uniformity, large harvests, and consistency. If you want seeds that grow to be true and want to save on money, you can go for the Heirloom seeds.

7. Organic Seeds vs. Conventional Seeds

Again you will need to understand the difference between organic seeds and conventional Seeds. A certified organic seed should comply with U.S. Department of Agriculture guidelines for organic growing. On the other hand, conventional seeds are seeds that can be bought just about anywhere and are, in most cases, cheaper than organic options.

When it comes to planting, the convention seed is grown in a conventional system using synthetic fertilizers and harsh pesticides. On the other hand, the organic options are grown in an organic system with the main focus on the soil and plants’ health and mainly use natural fertilizers and pest control.

When buying vegetable seeds online, it is essential to go for brands with enough industry background. Companies that are well known and have been in the business for a longer period are more likely to provide you with various quality products. Again it is more likely that they will be more transparent about which vegetable seeds will work for you and which will not. So, when looking to buy vegetable seeds online, you will need to be very keen on the company you buy from.
