Mother’s Day on Lanai – Lanai 96763

To celebrate Mother’s Day, we asked people around town to share special memories of their mothers. Here’s what they had to say:

Megan Amby
Mother: Fiona Amby

What is your fondest memory with your mother?
During 4th of July weekend when I was around 8 years old, I was upset that I was missing the Pineapple Festival since I was sick, so my mom rented movies of my choice from the old rental store. We spent the night watching movies and hanging out while my brothers and dad were at the festival. At the time, I was afraid I was missing out, but I think what we did was even more memorable.

What is the most memorable advice your mother ever gave you?
My mom always told me to “not sweat the small stuff.” Although I didn’t take the advice right away, I always consider it now as an adult.

What do you/did you appreciate the most about your relationship with your mother?
The thing I appreciate most is the calmness she brings me, and that I know I can talk to her about anything. I know if she is there, everything will turn out okay.

What makes/made your mother the happiest?
If our family is happy, my mom is happy. Also, she likes when people compliment her cooking!

What are some traits that you share with your mother?
As a mother myself, I know we share the same “mama bear” instinct and we are both extreme caregivers. We are also both trustworthy and hardworking.

Anthony Pacheco
Mother: Darlene Pacheco-Rapp

What is your fondest memory with your mother?
When I was little, my mom would sometimes take me out for night drives. Parked outside of town, we’d look at the stars together and she’d ponder over the infinite mysteries of existence, then turn to me and ask, “What do you think about why we are here, Tonino?”

What is the most memorable advice your mother ever gave you?
With regards to masculinity and raising a son, “Show love so he can show love when he grows up too.”

What do you/did you appreciate the most about your relationship with your mother?
I appreciate her bold and unwavering loyalty.

What makes/made your mother the happiest?
She’s transcendent in the presence of a good song.

What are some traits that you share with your mother?
We’re both very imaginative. We can get fully immersed in any creative project we start. I get confused as a technologist a lot but I’m way more artsy than technical, and that’s really thanks to her.

Nicole and Michelle Fujie
Mother: Nola Fujie

Nicole Fujie

What is your fondest memory with your mother?
My fondest memory is when my mother stayed with me in Washington while going through stem cell transplant at Seattle Cancer Care Alliance. I loved making Snap Chat videos with her. She was always so funny and said random things during the video.

What is the most memorable advice your mother ever gave you?
Your a** is the boss. (When you gotta go, you gotta go)

What do you/did you appreciate the most about your relationship with your mother?
She always encouraged me to try new things and to never give up.

What makes/made your mother the happiest?
Food. She would always plan the next meal.

What are some traits that you share with your mother?
The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. I most definitely look like her. She inspired me to shave my head after she got diagnosed with cancer. I saw she had a nicely shaped head and was very cute while growing back in. I have kept a short haircut since January 2021 in memory of her.

Michelle Fujie

What is your fondest memory with your mother?
My fondest memory is going on walks together with our dogs and watching her play with my children.

What is the most memorable advice your mother ever gave you?
Make yourself happy first so you can make others happy.

What do you/did you appreciate the most about your relationship with your mother?
She was always there for me and would give the most honest advice. She also loved me unconditionally.

What makes/made your mother the happiest?
Food and being with her dogs.

What are some traits that you share with your mother?
My fun-loving nature and generosity.

Erin Atacador
Mother: Chelsea Trevino

What is your fondest memory with your mother?
My fondest memory with my mom is of the day my son was born. She made sure we were both well taken care of, with a smile on her face the whole time.

What is the most memorable advice your mother ever gave you?
“Life isn’t always fair, but still try your best every day.”

What do you/did you appreciate the most about your relationship with your mother?
I appreciate the never-ending support my mom gives me. No matter the circumstances, I can always count on my mom to be there for me.

What makes/made your mother the happiest?
I think spending time with family and friends makes her the happiest.

What are some traits that you share with your mother?
The most meaningful trait my mom has shared with me is to always see the good in people – always keep an open mind and never judge.

Michele Holsomback
Mother: Charlotte Holsomback

What is your fondest memory with your mother?
I have many fond memories with my mom shopping! She won’t admit it, but we both have a love for shoes! As long as I can remember, we were always trying on shoes. It helps that we wear the same size shoe, so we can always justify buying new shoes and saying the other person can “borrow” them.

What is the most memorable advice your mother ever gave you?
“If you have nothing nice to say, then don’t say anything at all.”

What do you/did you appreciate the most about your relationship with your mother?
What I appreciate the most is our communication. We talk all the time. She has always been there by being supportive and understanding.

What makes/made your mother the happiest?
My mom is the happiest when she’s talking story with family and friends! She enjoys catching up with family and friends she hasn’t talked to in a while. She also enjoys visiting family and friends she sees regularly – especially with her great-granddaughters.

What are some traits that you share with your mother?
Putting family first, accomplishing whatever you put your mind to, and being kind. My mom is the kindest person I have ever met. Her kindness extends to anyone, whether she knows you or just met you. If I can be at least half the person my mom is, that would be awesome.

Joelle Aoki
Mother: Florence Endrina

What is your fondest memory with your mother?
One of my fondest memories with my mother was watching her in the “Great Koele Stampede.” She rode a soft sleigh, towed by a rope, by one of our most spirited horses, named Misty. Misty was ridden by my father in a race with other Lanaians at the Koele ranch. As my father raced down the arena and back, with my mother hanging on for dear life, they won the blue ribbon! I remember her big smile, infectious laugh as she was covered in dirt, and the genuine trust and courage she had for my father and our horse.

What is the most memorable advice your mother ever gave you?
My mother once said sometimes it’s easier to just “let go.” Later in life, she finished the sentence with “And let God…”

What do you/did you appreciate the most about your relationship with your mother?
I appreciated many things about her, and I didn’t realize how much until she was gone. On some mornings, I would wake up to the piano playing as she taught students, classes, and choirs. She played hymns from church, Joplin, and Beethoven. As a 7-year-old at the time, I did not realize how fortunate I was to be woken by the sound of the piano playing. Today, the notes ring through to my head and heart with gratitude for the relationship I was blessed with by my mother, and her music which is now a beautiful memory.

What makes/made your mother the happiest?
She was the happiest when she could eat Chinese food, watch a great movie, spend time with her grandchildren painting, creating ceramics, or reading a good Nora Roberts novel in two days.

What are some traits that you share with your mother?
Some of the traits I share are my independence, courage, talkativeness, humor, and maybe a little of her smarts.

Kaleo, Ola and Kaeo Ropa
Mother: Sandra Ropa

What is your fondest memory with your mother?
Our fondest memories consist of our camping and fishing trips to Honuapo and Ka Lae. Also, our celebrations on Christmas and New Year’s holidays in Kau.

What is the most memorable advice your mother ever gave you?
Always be humble, and “eat all your food; get kids starving in China.”

What do you/did you appreciate the most about your relationship with your mother?
We are grateful of the fact that our mother is able to help raise our children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She has unconditional love for all of us and her hugs cure all heartaches. We appreciate having everyone together as a family as our home base.

What makes/made your mother the happiest?
She’s the happiest when my Dad visits her to remind her he is still watching over her.

What are some traits that you share with your mother?
We share the love for our ohana and the Aloha we have for our Hawaiian culture.

Mahina Romero
Mother: Heather Romero

What is your fondest memory with your mother?
My fondest memory is when my mom and my late father, Louis Julian Romero, would sing with each other in our living room together. She would teach Pine, Kamaunu, Kekai, and me how to sing and entertain. Serious moments, but also bus’ laugh moments too. The happy days.

What is the most memorable advice your mother ever gave you?
Don’t lie or cheat or get “lickins”.

What do you/did you appreciate the most about your relationship with your mother?
I appreciate her reminding me every day about the same thing, over and over – so I don’t forget. And helping our entire family in times of need.

What makes/made your mother the happiest?
Being with all of her grandchildren.

What are some traits that you share with your mother?
We share the same laugh. If you know, or have been around us, you know what I’m talking about.

Aulii Kamalii
Mother: Leilani Spitalsky

What is your fondest memory with your mother?
My wedding day. I asked my mom if she would do me the honor of walking me down the aisle before handing me off to my dad. Without her, I could not have started this new chapter in my life. She made me the woman I am today.

What is the most memorable advice your mother ever gave you?
Always try to be the best at whatever you do in life.

What do you/did you appreciate the most about your relationship with your mother?
I always appreciated how nurturing and encouraging she is, and her unconditional love.

What makes/made your mother the happiest?
Being outdoors or at the beach, surrounded by family and friends.

What are some traits that you share with your mother?
We are both bold and sincere.

2 servings of avocado per week may cut heart disease risk by 16%

  • Researchers examined the relationship between avocado consumption and cardiovascular events.
  • They found that eating 2 or more servings of avocado per week is linked to 16% fewer cardiovascular events over a 30-year period. One serving is half an avocado, or 80 grams (g).
  • The researchers conclude that replacing certain fat-containing foods with avocado could lower cardiovascular disease risk.
  • The note however that replacing plant oils with avocado is linked to a 45% higher stroke risk.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death worldwide. However, it can be prevented through lifestyle factors like diet.

The American Heart Association (AHA) recommends limiting 5 to 6% of calories intake from saturated fatty acid (SFA), and replacing SFA and trans-fats with monounsaturated fats (MUFA) and polyunsaturated fats for better heart health.

Avocados are rich in MUFAs and polyunsaturated fats. Studies have found that their regular consumption reduces triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, and total cholesterol level.

Most studies on avocado consumption have focused on cardiovascular risk factors. Studies investigating the link between avocado consumption and cardiovascular events could improve understanding of the fruit’s health benefits.

Recently, researchers have investigated the link between avocado consumption and cardiovascular events.

They found that higher consumption of avocados was linked to a lower risk of CVD and coronary heart disease (CHD).

“The […] results are significant and strengthen previous findings of avocados’ association with a lower risk of cardiovascular disease [as well as] reducing heart outcomes such as fatal and nonfatal myocardial infarction,” Bhanu Gupta, MD, cardiologist at The University of Kansas Health System, not involved in the study, told Medical News Today.

“Point to be noted: avocado consumption does not lower the risk of stroke in the study. Another point to be noted: avocado is not a replacement for healthy dietary fats such as olive oils, nuts, and other plant oils.”

– Dr. Gupta

The study was published in the Journal of the American Heart Association (JAHA)Trusted Source.

Data analysis

For the study, the researchers used data from the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study (HPFS) and the Nurses’ Health Studies (NHS). Both studies are ongoing and began in 1986 and 1976 to examine the effects of health and lifestyle on the incidence of serious illness in male and female healthcare professionals.

For the present study, the researchers included 62,225 females and 41,701 males who did not have a history of heart disease, stroke, or cancer.

The researchers examined their medical records for incidence of myocardial infarction and stroke, dietary surveys taken once every 4 years, and risk factors such as hypertension and type 2 diabetes from self-reports and physician diagnoses. Participants were tracked for 30 years.

By the end of the study period, the researchers noted 14,274 incident cases of CVD including 9,185 CHD events and 5,290 strokes.

The researchers noted that males and females with higher avocado intake tended to have higher total energy intake and a healthier diet with more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and dairy products such as yogurt and cheese.

After adjusting for major dietary and lifestyle factors, the researchers found that having two or more servings of avocado per week was linked to a 16% lower CVD risk and 21% lower CHD risk compared to those who did not eat avocados.

They further found that replacing half a serving per day of mayonnaise, margarine, butter, egg, yogurt, cheese, or processed meats with the same amount of avocado was linked to a 19–31% lower risk of coronary heart disease.

They reported no significant association between stroke risk and avocado consumption. However, they noted that replacing half a serving per day of plant oils with an equivalent amount of avocado was linked to a 45% higher stroke risk.

Nutrient-rich food

When asked to explain what might account for the positive effects of avocado on CVD risk, study first author Lorena Pacheco, Ph.D., MPH, RDN, postdoctoral research fellow at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, told MNT:

“Avocados are a nutrient-rich food item with favorable food compounds including monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats (healthy fats), vitamins, minerals, soluble fiber, vegetable proteins, phytosterols, and polyphenols. There are potential biological mechanisms by which avocados offer cardioprotective benefits.”

“The primary monounsaturated fatty acid present in avocados is oleic acid – healthy fat – and it is suggested that it helps in reducing hypertension, inflammation, and insulin sensitivity.”

“Additionally, they contain plant sterols that could have favorable effects on lipid profiles. [Also], the soluble fiber intake in avocados can also lead to a better lipid profile, meaning lower ‘bad cholesterol’ levels,” she explained.

“They also are a source of vegetable protein,” added Penny M. Kris-Etherton Ph.D., professor of nutritional science at Penn State College of Health and Human Development, not involved in the study. “Collectively, it is very likely that this ‘package’ of heart-health compounds accounts for the findings,” said Dr. Kris-Etherton.

The researchers concluded that replacing certain fat-containing foods with avocado could lower CVD risk.

Study limitations

The authors noted some limitations to their findings. As their study was observational, they could not establish causation.

Shannon Hoos-Thompson, MD, a cardiologist at The University of Kansas Health System, not involved in the study, explained for MNT:

“To put the findings in perspective, eating less cardiovascular unhealthy food may be the explanation [rather] than the result being specific to avocado consumption.”

The authors also noted that their study population was primarily non-Hispanic white nurses and health professionals, so their results may not be generalized to wider demographics.

“The dietary data were self-reported and have some measurement error,” added Dr. Kris-Etherton. “However, the authors used a repeated measurements dietary assessment method and collected intake data over time, which reduces random measurement error.”

A Live Music Venue With a DIY Bloody Mary Bar Zooms Into Clarendon

B Live’s blinking bar is framed with a mural of music legends like Janis Joplin, Freddie Mercury, and Prince. | Albert Ting/B Live

A Clarendon nightlife group plunks a psychedelic party pad inside the old Whitlow’s on Wilson

Fast-growing B Social Hospitality is at it again, this time with an energetic music venue for Clarendon that invites guests to jam out and toast to a wall of rock greats with a customized bloody mary or cereal milk shooter.

B Live is the latest nightlife attraction from the owners of nearby Clarendon Pop-Up Bar, Pamplona, and The Lot, along with brand new D.C. club Alias on 14th under Dolce Vita.

B Live breathes fresh life into the front half of Whitlow’s On Wilson, the beloved watering hole that closed last summer after a 25-year run (2854 Wilson Boulevard). Come summer, a tropical rooftop bar called Coco B’s will fill out the balance of the iconic corner space.

B Social Hospitality owners and Arlington residents Mike and Christal Bramson say they opened B Live to fill a concert void in a neighborhood that’s said goodbye to mainstays like Clarendon Grill, Mister Days, Clarendon Ballroom, and The Bracket Room in recent years.

“Unfortunately, a lot of iconic bars in Clarendon have closed, and with that the live music scene went with it. We love live music and miss having that option. It’s more limited now with bigger venues,” says Mike Bramson.

Five Guys was the rumored replacement to Whitlow’s, but that deal fell through last year and the Bramsons called dibs on the whole two-part project.

B Live can seat around 100 guests at a time.

Beverage director Josh Odmark’s B Live cocktail list calls for martinis, “man-mosas,” and spiked coffee drinks. A childhood classic gets a grown-up edge at B Live. Cereal milk from Lucky Charms, Fruity Pebbles, and Cocoa Puffs is infused with vodka and liqueur to make mini “cereal bowl shooters,” sent out in four-ounce portions.

B Live’s stage will host live performances five nights a week, with a rotating lineup of acoustic solo performances, bands, and DJs. B Live balloons to a 300-person capacity for shows, with a patio for nearly 50 out front coming soon.

B Live is going for a retro diner feel, complete with a black-and-white checkered floor and stage, album cover collages, and big bulbs over the bar that change colors with the music for a game show-styled effect.

The rocker-chic look is a joint effort between the Bramsons, John Howard of A2Z Music Factory, and longtime friend and general contractor Mike Juliano. The forthcoming Coco B’s piece will take a more feminine approach with lots of pink and feathers.

The 4,100-square-foot spot to jam out doubles as an all-day brunch destination, complete with a build-your-own bloody mary corner stocked with a dizzying count of hot sauces, mixes, celery, and other fix-ins to assemble the daytime vodka cocktail oneself. The idea for the DIY weekend feature stems from Dewey Beach staple Starboard – and the Bramsons’ first date spot – that’s famously outfitted with a lengthy wall of bloody mary ingredients.

B Live also plans to bring Delaware’s boozy beach town to Arlington by booking cult cover bands that regularly play there and in neighboring Ocean City, Maryland. Cover charges will fluctuate, depending on the act. Singer Bryen OBoyle of Mr. Greengenes kicks off a three-day weekend opener on Thursday, May 12.

Lahlou Restaurant Group corporate chef Juan Olivera (Dolce Vita, Lupo Verde, Lupo Pizzeria) consults on a comfort food menu set to go live over the next few weeks. Once running on all cylinders, B Live’s hours will kick off daily at 11 a.m. and until 11 p.m. on Sunday to Wednesday and Thursday to Saturday until 2 a.m.

Next up for B Social Hospitality: opening The Cove, an all-outdoor waterfront bar and brewery in Navy Yard by the Fourth of July.
