The first Franc Du Monde results announced

Medals for Argentina, Slovakia, Serbia, Croatia and Hungary

Producers of Hungarian Villány wine region have been organizing Franc & Franc conference and tasting for years, and by today the event has become the internation forum of Cabernet Franc variety. After several years of successful conferences, they decided to create a prestigious wine competition focusing on Cabernet Franc – this is Franc Du Monde.

Wines could arrive from every region of the world, where – like in Villány – winemakers pay special attention to this grape and make varietal Cabernet Franc wines.

Categories of Frand Du Monde:

  • classic: Cabernet Franc single-varietal wines with at least 9% ABV
  • premium: Cabernet Franc single-varietal wines aged for at least 12 months in oak with at least 12.5% ABV
  • older vintages: Cabernet Franc single-varietal wines with vintage at least ten years ago (in 2022, wines from the 2012 vintage or older)
  • blends: blends containing at least 70% Cabernet Franc

The story started with legendary Michael Broadbent visiting Villány in 2000 and making his famous statement: “Cabernet Franc has found its natural home in Villány”. “Our decision to create a new wine contest was inspired by the experiences of the past years, since Villány wine region has already organized Cabernet Franc themed trade and consumer events 6 times so far. During these years many of the most significant Old and New World producers presented their wines at Franc & Franc. They are devoted producers who believe in the variety and make varietal wine of it” – commented Gergely Nagy, the executive manager of Tenkes Regional Development Nonprofit Ltd.

Premium – the most popular segment

101 wines entered from 8 countries: France, Slovakia, Croatia, Serbia, Romania, Turkey, Argentina and Hungary. “Premium” was the most popular category with 67 entries. Wines were evaluated by renowned international wine experts including two Master of Wine experts. As the jury members summarized after the contest, the overall quality of the wines was very high, and since the contest followed the OIV rules, only 30% of the entered wines could receive medal. The medal winner wines are all above 89.2 points!

PFL’s Larissa Pacheco blasts Kayla Harrison for GOAT talk: “Her fights are boring, they are not interesting to watch” | BJPenn.com

PFL women’s lightweight Larissa Pacheco believes most of Kayla Harrison’s success is due to marketing.

Since the Judoka burst onto the MMA scene in 2018, she’s been one of the faces of the PFL. Harrison went on to win two PFL women’s lightweight tournaments from that time forward and became one of the hottest names in the sport.

She had heavy interest from Bellator and UFC earlier this year but stuck with the PFL. With her re-signing to the promotion, Harrison has become the favorite for the women’s lightweight tournament. However, a former foe of the Judoka has some words about that.

Larissa Pacheco discussed Kayla Harrison’s rise in an interview with Trocação Franca. The Brazilian blasted the Olympian for being a boring fighter. She also opined that most of Harrison’s success and hype is due to marketing.

The Brazilian is currently hunting for a trilogy fight with the former tournament winner. Pacheco and Harrison have faced off on two occasions, with the latter winning both times.

“Too much marketing, way too much marketing. Most of the time she’s won against inexperienced girls. I think it’s just a lot of marketing because she’s the beauty standard, that standard that all Americans love and the world has to love too because she’s just too good. They deify her way too much, but she’s only a judo fighter. She does perfectly what she’s been doing her entire life, which is judo. We can’t deny that. But, in all other aspects of MMA, MMA being a sport that mixes every martial art, her game is weak.” (h/t MMAFighting)

Larissa Pacheco continued, “She only does one thing. She might do that perfectly, but that’s all she does. Her fights are boring, they are not interesting to watch. The problem is that they have all that marketing over her, deifying this athlete. But I don’t think she’s the world’s best pound for pound. There are athletes who are 1,000 times better than her.”

What do you think about Larissa Pacheco’s comments about Kayla Harrison? Do you agree? Sound off in the comments below!

Fourth of July Review: Louis C.K.’s Comedy Fruitlessly Looks for Catharsis

Louis C.K.’s Fourth of July appears to be torn between honoring the personal ambitions of its creators and playing by the rules of formula. On paper, the film sounds quite ordinary, like another dramedy about a neurotic artist attempting to come to terms with his family. Take a pinch of Woody Allen, and add to the recipe the work of every Allen imitator to make any kind of impression on American indie cinema in the last 30 years, and you’re closer than you probably should be to capturing the spirit of Fourth of July.

While C.K. was riding the creative high of the television shows Louie and Horace and Pete, one didn’t anticipate in the comedian’s future a movie that might invite comparisons to, say, an Edward Burns production. After accusations of sexual harassment (which he admitted to committing) stalled his career, C.K. seems determined here to “play nice” and make something ingratiating. Yet, in the cracks of certain scenes, you see an artist peek through.

Joe List, a comedian who’s opened for C.K. on stage, and who co-wrote Fourth of July, plays Jeff, a New York jazz pianist recovering from alcoholism. List himself has been in recovery since 2012, and he and C.K. imbue the film’s first act with a jittery sense of irresolution that’s true of newfound sobriety and reminiscent of the livewire comedy of C.K.’s past triumphs.

Fourth of July’s scenes are jagged, never quite reaching their anticipated destinations. Jeff, on the wagon for about three years, is talked into serving as a sponsor for Bobby (Robert Kelly). At Jeff’s apartment, Bobby appears to be on the verge of a confession, about how his weight and drinking problems coalesce with his family history, until Jeff’s wife, Beth (Sarah Tollemache), walks in and inadvertently crushes his momentum. The casualness with which Bobby’s potential catharsis fades into the ether of everyday banality is very truthful and funny.

In the film’s best moments, C.K. seems to be aiming for a more commercially palatable John Cassavetes movie: something loose and revealing that still keeps us grounded in familiar story beats. When Jeff is playing a set at a bar, C.K. lingers on the show, letting us drink in the textures of the setting. We’re allowed to realize for ourselves that Jeff has to spin a cocoon, one that includes only himself and his instrument, in order to feel safe in a bar from relapsing.

As a performer, List has an understatement that’s rare for comedians riffing on themselves. He doesn’t hammer the pathos of his presence into the ground or act cute to court audience sympathy. You have to come to him a bit, which is becoming of a new and raw actor. And List somehow positions his glasses, large and owl-shaped, as a symbol of self-loathing. Throughout, they make his eyes look as if they’re perpetually drooping in resignation.

What C.K. doesn’t do in Fourth of July, which positions it in stark contrast to much of his prior work, is evince a willingness to risk breaking the entire production open so as to mine something truly, uncomfortably personal. Cassavetes did this sort of thing all the time: Husbands, one of the supreme cinematic masterworks concerned with machismo and alcoholism, spends a half hour of its running time in a bathroom with drunk men recriminating one another. In such a moment, you feel the filmmaker’s will to risk losing his audience, and even himself, so as to channel the depths of his mania.

C.K. displayed similar tendencies in Louie, Horace and Pete, and, most audaciously, in his prior film, I Love You, Daddy, which appears to be in direct conversation with his sexual dysfunctions. It’s a shrill, sleazy movie that’s less likable than Fourth of July yet more memorable—a personal work that you can somehow hate and respect in equal measure.

It’s a shame that C.K. and List don’t stick with Jeff and Bobby and their adventures concerning Bobby’s newfound sobriety, because the film’s deviation from this setup, and from Jeff’s bitchy sessions with his therapist (C.K.), is profoundly disappointing. Jeff eventually goes to Maine for the traditional vacation with his family during the week preceding the Fourth of July to make the declarations that he’s been promising to make for years: that he resents them and wishes to air his laundry so that he might be comfortable with fatherhood.

Many men in real life have such feelings, especially those in recovery, yet this setup feels pat and recycled from countless other things. This feeling isn’t alleviated by the fact that Jeff’s family is a collection of boisterous sitcom clichés prone to saying the wrong working-class thing at the wrong time—and, of course, they think Jeff’s obsession with feelings is girly.

Fourth of July has a scrappy, dashed-off quality that softens many of those clichés. The film barely has a second act and not much of a third, as Jeff’s week with his family seems to be ending just as he got there, in the process sparing us a lot of pop-film psychology. Jeff lashes out at his drunk and insensitive family, they take it in stride…and that’s about it.

Jeff’s issues, particularly with his parents (Paula Plum and Robert Walsh), are never defined, as we’re meant to accept this situation universally as reflective of The Baggage We Carry. These elisions deflate the film of the self-pity that’s often inherent to family dramas, and Jeff is held as accountable for his overall misery as anyone else. Yet C.K.’s glancing under-dramatization of this setup leaves one wondering why he and List bothered with it at all. Fourth of July is painless and occasionally spiky, yet you leave it still hungry for a movie. This is actually an audition reel: for C.K.’s redemption in the film business, and for List’s induction into it.

TESTIMONIALS from

:

“I loved Lee Kull’s devilish story. I wonder what that sly herbalist will concoct in future readings for her next heavy-handed victim!”

“I’ve been pleased by the variety of stories all told with just 81 words. Not only are the stories diverse, but the authors are too. Ranging in age from 4 years to many more lived years, the authors come from all over the world. It’s a terrific book to leave out in a waiting area or by your personal throne for an enjoyable few minutes of very short and entertaining distraction. I highly recommend this book.”

“The quality and variety of stories in this book is magnificent and I love the mini biography for each author after their short story.

I am author No. 533 but hadn’t read any of the other work until I purchased on launch day and although I knew the quality of writing would be good I had no idea how high the standard would be.

Well done to all involved and thank you to those who have purchased.”

“A lot of work has gone into creating this anthology of tiny stories so well done Chris Fielden. Well done to all the authors too – 81 words isn’t a lot to work with to create a rounded story. A great book to dip into and would make a good Christmas present……and it supports the Arkbound charity too.”

Election 2022: Five Democrats, Republican in running for new, open Assembly District in SE LA County – Whittier Daily News

Five Democrats and one Republican are seeking a new, open Assembly District in Southeast Los Angeles County as votes are cast in a primary election concluding on Tuesday, June 7.

Democrats Elizabeth Alcantar, mayor of Cudahy; Roberto “Rob” Cancio, a Norwalk-La Mirada school board member; La Habra Councilwoman Rose Espinoza; Downey Mayor Blanca Pacheco; Norwalk Councilwoman Ana Valencia; and Republican Raul Ortiz, a pest control manager/pastor from La Mirada are in the running for two spots on the November ballot.

The Democrats appear to have the advantage in a district that’s nearly two-thirds Latino and has voter registration that favors Democrats by more than 30 points.

Meanwhile, political newcomer Ortiz Jr. is an ultra-conservative Republican running in one of the mostly solidly blue Assembly districts in Southern California. His advantage, in the short-term, might be math. The five viable Democratic candidates could divide the primary vote in a way that helps Ortiz finish as one of the top two vote-getters on June 7, meaning he could advance to the November general election, where the sole Democrat would be heavily favored to win.

Pacheco won the money war, spending nearly $325,000, while Cancio spent nearly $143,000, Alcantar spent about $127,000 Valencia, nearly $100,000 and Espinoza, nearly $12,000. Ortiz didn’t file electronically.

The California Democratic Party was unable to reach consensus on a candidate to back in the primary. Other Democratic leaders and organizations are largely dividing their support between Pacheco and Valencia.

All five Democrats have been elected locally either to city councils, school boards or both and all emphasized their experiences.

Meanwhile, Ortiz has been endorsed by the California Republican Assembly. He’s campaigning with a slate of GOP candidates calling themselves “You First,” with CA-38 challenger Eric Ching, SD-30 challenger Mitch Clemmons and AD-56 candidate Jessica Martinez making the rounds together to promote their campaigns at area churches and community events.

Homelessness was a hot issue at a candidates forum in Norwalk.

Candidates vowed to come up with money to provide wraparound services, a term meaning “child–focused, family-centered, strengths-based, needs-driven planning process, according to a definition on the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health website.

While there’s a clear ideological line between Ortiz and the other five AD-64 candidates, there also are significant distinctions for voters to parse among the Democrats.

On the question of single-payer healthcare, for example, Alcantar was the only one to say she supports the idea. Cancio and Pacheco said no.

When it comes to abortion rights, Alcantar, Cancio and Pacheco all said they strongly support a woman’s right to choose. Espinoza she “would support an abortion when the procedure is necessary for the life and health of the mother.
