Canelo Alvarez vs Avni Yildirim – Big Fight Preview & Predictions
Hot on the heels of his dominant December 2019 points win over Callum Smith, Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez makes a swift defence of his Super Middleweight gold on Saturday night against a man considered as having little to no chance of victory in Turkey’s Avni Yildirim.
DAZN is the place to see the pound for pound flag bearer, Canelo (54-1-2, 36 KOs) put his WBC and WBA ‘Super’ and Ring Magazine titles on the line against Yildirim (21-2, 12 KOs) at the Hard Rock Stadium, Miami and 2021 could well be the year we see some blockbuster fights for the Mexican.
The 30-year-old needs little introduction, and has taken the premier fighter mantle from old foe Floyd Mayweather Jr and ran with it in the last few years.
After a spell as WBC Super Welterweight champion, and then unified champion, Canelo dropped his belts to Mayweather in September 2013 in a learning reverse.
That remains his only professional defeat, and world titles have since come at Middleweight, Super Middleweight and Light Heavyweight in a glittering career that has seen him defeat names such as Erislandy Lara, Miguel Cotto and Amir Khan.
A hotly disputed draw with Gennady Golovkin was followed a year later by a majority win. A move to 168lbs brought him Rocky Fielding’s WBA ‘Regular’ belt and after a drop back down to defend his Middleweight gold against Daniel Jacobs, he knocked out Sergey Kovalev in eleven to become WBO Light Heavyweight champion.
Alvarez was last out just two months ago, easily dealing with the challenge of Callum Smith, taking a wide points win.
Victory for Canelo will set him up for a clash with WBO Super Middleweight titlist, Billy Joe Saunders with a deal reportedly agreed for a May showdown, should the Mexican overcome his WBC mandatory challenger.
If the man from Istanbul could somehow take the win on the weekend, it would rank with one of the most monumental upsets of all time.
Yildirim started as a Light Heavyweight, and dropped down to Super Middleweight, and a May 2017 points win over Marco Antonio Periban saw him emerge as a contender.
This was quickly dispelled however, as one fight later he was knocked out in three in an IBO title tilt against Chris Eubank Jr.
The 29-year-old was given a shot at the vacant WBC belt in February 2019, losing to Anthony Dirrell on a technical decision, with the fight halted, after the American suffered a cut. He hasn’t fought since, which makes this opportunity even more bizarre.
Prediction: Alvarez will want to waste no time in winning and moving on, and Yildirim shouldn’t pose too many problems for him. After a feeling out opener, the Mexican should cut loose, and can remove the Turk from battle inside three or four rounds in this one.
Martinez defends WBC crown against Arroyo
Exciting WBC Flyweight boss, Julio Cesar Martinez makes a third defence of his crown on the bill against McWilliams Arroyo (20-4, 15 KOs).
Martinez (17-1, 13 KOs) is a big puncher, and has gone from strength to strength since winning the title in December 2019.
2020 saw two defences, a points win over brave Welshman Jay Harris, followed by a second round hammering of Moises Calleros in October 2020, which was his last appearance.
Prediction: Arroyo hasn’t been stopped in four defeats and has failed in two previous world title bids against Amnat Ruenroeng and Roman Gonzalez. He does hold a February 2018 win over Carlos Cuadras and is durable, but Martinez has heavy hands, and I can see him halting his challenger in the championship rounds.
The rest of the card is pretty threadbare. At Heavyweight, China’s Zhilei Zhang takes on Jerry Forrest over ten.
Forrest (26-4, 20 KOs) is a tough nut to crack, and has gone the distance with Michael Hunter and, last time out, Carlos Takam. The pick is for Zhang (22-0, 17 KOs) to take a dull decision win.
The sole eight rounder is at Super Middleweight, where Diego Pacheco (10-0, 8 KOs) will more than likely need the distance to see off Rodolfo Gomez Jr (14-4-1, 10 KOs), who hasn’t previously been halted.
The six rounder also comes at Super Middleweight, and Alexis Espino (6-0, 4 KOs) should be able to halt Ashton Sykes (5-3, 1 KO) inside schedule.
In four round action, exciting Super Featherweight prospect, Marc Castro (1-0, 1 KO) is back in action, and it should be an early nights’ work against Raul Corona (2-3).
At Super Lightweight, Aaron Aponte (1-0, 1 KO) is up against Harry Gigliotti (6-1, 3 KOs). Aponte should come through on the cards.
Highly-touted prospect, Keyshawn Davis makes his debut, and the Lightweight is in with Lester Brown (4-2-3, 1 KO) where an inside the distance win is possible.

Larissa Pacheco expects to KO Kayla Harrison in 2022 PFL Finals matchup | Yardbarker
If the Professional Fighters League’s Larissa Pacheco is accurate in her assessment, a million-dollar prize may be within her grasp.
In 2019, Pacheco joined the PFL and entered into its inaugural women’s lightweight bracket. The former Ultimate Fighting Championship bantamweight had moved up 10 pounds in her lone regional bout after leaving the UFC, beating future UFC talent Karol Rosa at featherweight. Over one year later, she stepped into the PFL cage at lightweight, and she drew the 3-0 Harrison only to drop a decision. The Brazilian bounced back with a quick armbar over Bobbi Jo Dalziel to reach the playoffs, and a decision win over Sarah Kaufman slotted her into the finals, in a rematch against Harrison.
This time, it took Harrison the full five rounds to get the win, but the two-time Olympic gold medalist cleanly swept every round and even earned a 50-43 score on one judge’s card. After those losses, Pacheco totally changed her life. Since then, she has won four fights in a row by first-round knockout, and in both the 2021 and 2022 seasons, she claimed the top seed in her division. This year, her next test will a rematch with Helena Kolesnyk, a woman she cleanly knocked out in 2021, but she
definitively plans on facing Harrison in the finals. Pacheco spoke
to Sherdog about her life following the Harrison bouts on
Wednesday, confident that things will be different should they meet
again.
“Since 2019, I have changed everything,” Pacheco admitted. “Today I [work] with physical trainer, psychologist, and endocrinologist, and I’m happy to show the result of that change with four first-round TKO wins.”
Pacheco did not hide her discomfort with all the hype over the two-time champ Harrison, who herself reached the playoffs with nine points and will take on Martina Jindrova in the semifinals. She is similarly frustrated with how fans address her and other notable female fighters.
“Of course, all the marketing over her bothers [me], but I just don’t let it affect me,” the 27-year-old remarked. “We must understand that Kayla is a national hero – Olympic Champion – I think it’s pretty natural that she is the big star of the show. Actually, what really bothers me is to see the prejudice some fans still have over my stereotype, saying things like, ‘This is not a woman, that’s not fair.’ I always answer politely that my look has no relationship with my abilities. People must understand that fighters like myself and Amanda Nunes, we don’t want to be recognized by our sexual
orientation, but for what we deliver inside the cage. Look at my
last fights. I’m a jiu-jitsu black belt who got three TKOs against
strikers in the last 12 months. I cannot be accused of not
entertaining the fans.”
Pacheco, who does face another opponent that Harrison on Aug. 20, is laser focused on the unbeaten woman who has topped her twice. She addressed an interview given by Harrison’s manager, Ali Abdelaziz, who claimed that Harrison would be a betting favorite today against Cristiane Justino or Nunes.
“I totally disagree [that Harrison would be the favorite against Justino or Nunes],” Pacheco stated firmly. “Besides being pioneers, ‘Cyborg’ and Amanda are complete MMA fighters. I fought eight rounds with Kayla. She is strong in what she proposes to do, apply judo in MMA, but she is not skilled in striking – not even on the ground. She is in an evolving process of MMA. The fact is that most of her opponents enter the cage afraid of her size, athleticism and all the marketing. Kayla needs to improve a lot [of her] MMA abilities to be considered favorite against these two legends.”
While Harrison easily outworked Pacheco thanks to her grappling, Pacheco does not believe that Harrison is or was the most dangerous judo player in the game.
“I truly think Ronda [Rousey] was better than her on the ground for MMA, having more variations,” the Brazilian noted. “Kayla’s stabilization is very good, she is very strong, but she is still unable to punish while stabilizing and you could see by my clean face after both fights we did, that it was not difficult to fight her on the ground.”
Despite that Pacheco is not concerned with Harrison’s skills this year, or that the Olympian’s skills may not be as dangerous as others believe, she made sure to elucidate that she has no personal issues with her prospective adversary.
“Our backstage relation is of mutual respect, just like I have with all my opponents,” she explained.
When the subject of conversation turns to the result of that awaited trilogy match in the final of the PFL women’s lightweight tourney, the mutual respect mode is switched by total self-confidence. After two tears of complete renovation and four months training with Roan Carneiro in American Top Team Atlanta, Pacheco believes Kayla will not last till the 5th round if they both win their semifinals, against Kolesnyk and Jindrova, respectively, in August.
“Jindrova is a great fighter, but she is coming from lighter divisions and of course that favors Kayla,” Pacheco analyzed. “I also respect Helena a lot, but my goal is to knock her out once again. In the final, you can expect a totally different fight from two previous ones. My body has changed, my mind has changed, my power has changed, my [hands are] much heavier. Kayla is not used to absorbing punches [or having] her takedown game frustrated. If she passes over the first round, we will follow the strategy. She may reach 2nd or 3rd, but she will not reach the 5th round. I’m sure she [cannot] stand [with] my hands.”

CrossFit Semifinal Copa Sur: How to Watch, Predictions
Copa Sur is the only South American CrossFit sanctioned event that will grant a Games’ invitation to athletes from the continent. Check out who’s competing, who we are excited to see, the workouts programmed, and how to watch it.
According to the rulebook, the top 2 men, women and teams will receive an invitation to the CrossFit Games. Individuals placed 3rd, 4th and 5th can continue to the Last-Chance Qualifier.

Men
Who Should Win?
In the men’s division there really isn’t much discussion that Guilherme Malheiros will maintain his reign over South American athletes. The current 7th Fittest Man on Earth took the world by surprise with his strength and determination.
Malheiros has recently become a Mayhem Athlete and everyone is excited to see how much more can he improve under Rich Froning’s guidance.
Who Will Fight For Podium?
Another name that stands from the crow is Argentinian athlete Agustin Richelme. Richelme has actually won last year’s South American CrossFit Semifinal (Brazil CrossFit Championship) with 12 points ahead of Malheiros.
Dark Horse
Two other Brazilians can fight for a place on the podium. Kaique Cerveny and Anderon Primo are both incredibly strong athletes who could pose a threat to Malheiros and Richelme. Running not far behind we could see Nicolas Bidarte and Omar Martinez, from Argentina and Venezuela respectively.
Women
The women’s division is a bit trickier to predict as both women who have qualified last year through Semifinals are not on the roster this year. Larissa Cunha was banned for 2 years after failing a drug test although she proved her innocence. Sasha Nievas decided to go team this year.
Who Should Win?

Who Will Fight For Podium?
Without Sasha Nievas or Larissa Cunha on the roster, it’s an opportunity to see many up-and-coming athletes fighting for their chance to be under the spotlight. This is where Valentina Rangel, Julia Kato and Victoria Campos can battle for that Games’ invitation.
All three athletes have narrowly missed their opportunity last year by finishing 5th, 4th and 3rd respectively.
Dark Horse
The 20-year-old Luiza Marques can shine this year. She has only been to the Games as a team member or as a teenager, but since she finished 1st at the Quarterfinals recently, many are speculating it is her moment.

There are 10 Semifinals events spread worldwide. Four in North America, two in Europe, and one in Africa, South America, Oceania and Asia. Unlike last year, this time all Semifinals are in-person.
This is the last weekend of CrossFit Semifinals.
The Last-Chance Qualifier is an online competition that takes place from June 29th to July 1st.
The Games will take place on August 3-7 in Madison, Wisconsin, United States.

According to DEWALT, its new ATOMIC COMPACT SERIES 20V MAX* Pin Nailer delivers an ideal balance of size and power for fine woodworking without hoses, compressors, or gas cartridges
With its high-output brushless motor, the DCN623 pin nailer is capable of driving 23-guarge pin nails from 5/8″ up to 1-1/2″ in length into a variety of woods, including solid oak.

The tool boasts an impressive runtime with the ability to drive, on average, 2,000 nails per charge to help maximize uninterrupted work time.
For job-site efficiency, the low nail lockout system with LED indicator informs users when it is time to reload and in addition, this pin nailer features a tool-free jam release that helps to reduce downtime by quickly clearing jams, as well as tool-free depth adjust for precise nail placement.
The ATOMIC COMPACT SERIES 20V MAX* Brushless Cordless 23-Ga Pin Nailer will be available this month as a bare unit (DCN623B) or kitted with a battery and charger (DCN623D1) where DEWALT ATOMIC COMPACT SERIES products are sold.

Benicia: Multi-alarm grass fire closes roadway west of I-680
BENICIA — Firefighters were working to contain a multiple-alarm grass fire Wednesday evening west of Interstate 680 that could be seen from parts of the East Bay, authorities said.
The fire began around 4:40 p.m. in the 2000 block of Lake Herman Road close to Channel Road, and picked up second- and third-alarms within a half hour as multiple firefighting agencies from around Solano County sent resources.
By 5:30 p.m., authorities closed Lake Herman in both directions after flames reportedly jumped the roadway. Preliminary estimates of the fire said 50 acres were burned with no containment yet, but Cal Fire updated that around 6:10 p.m. to 60 acres and 30 percent containment.
As of 7:20 p.m., Cal Fire pegged the blaze at about 115 acres with 40 percent containment, with flames’ forward progress stopped due in part to robust mutual-aid responses and favorable weather conditions.
There were no initial reports of any threatened structures or evacuations, and a cause was under investigation.
