The 8+ Best Vegetable Crops To Sow In July | Polytunnel Gardening

In July, many gardeners may have stopped sowing for the season and will have turned their attention to harvesting crops sown earlier, in the spring. But if you want to grow and eat your own year round, there are plenty of vegetable crops to sow in July.

In July your polytunnel will be full and things will be progressing quickly. There will still be plenty of enticing produce to pick, and you will be eating a variety of fresh, delicious home-grown food.

While outside, the UK summer can often be a bit of a disappointment, either too cold, wet and damp or too hot and dry, inside your polytunnel the crops can remain unfazed by the weather outdoors – as long as you continue to take care of the watering, weeding and ventilation.

The key this month is to make sure, in addition to harvesting and other summer gardening jobs, that you take the time to plan for the months to come – getting in quick crops before the first frosts arrive, and planning for winter growing to feed you over the winter, or in spring of the following year.

Here are some of the crops that you might be summer sowing outdoors or in a polytunnel garden in the UK this month. You will find options to sow for a late summer or autumn harvest, and can plan ahead for yields in winter, and even through to the spring ‘hungry gap’ next year.

Beans (Dwarf French)

First of all, this is an option only for those growing undercover in England, or those in the far south of the UK. If frost free conditions can be offered for a sufficient length of time, you might sow dwarf French beans this month – it is your last chance to do so in order to obtain a harvest before colder months arrive.

Dwarf French beans don’t need staking, and can cope with dry conditions far better than many other crops. They are beneficial because they fix nitrogen in the soil. Since they love to be sown into a warm soil or growing medium, July can be a good time to sow your final succession of this crop.

Remember, however, that these plants require frost free conditions. You might be able to harvest one final yield of beans before the first frosts if you get in a sowing before the middle of the month.

But if you live further north, in a cooler area, it may be best to leave these for now, and instead plant overwintering broad beans (with protection) in September or October to fix nitrogen in your garden. Since you are unlikely to be able to get a worthwhile yield pf French beans before the end of the primary growing season.

Some varieties to try include:

Beetroot are typically sown earlier for a full-sized main crop. But in July, you will likely still certainly have time to harvest baby beetroot before the coldest weather arrives, and may even be able to harvest larger roots to store for use in winter. And with a polytunnel or in another protected area, might even be able to grow beetroot on through the winter months.

Beetroot can cope with a range of conditions, but will do best in a fertile, well-drained soil, enriched with plenty of organic matter.

You can harvest beetroot when they reach around golf ball size, or leave them to mature to around the size of a cricket ball.

Some beetroot varieties to consider sowing in July include:

Brassica (Cabbage Family Plants)

Brassicas are among the most important food producing families for UK gardeners – many of our favourite common crops are within this cabbage family – not only cabbages but also kale, broccoli, cauliflower, kohlrabi, turnips, and Asian options like pak choi, tatsoi, mustard greens etc…

Quick heading Calabrese broccoli can still be sown outdoors soon after mid summer for an autumn harvest. Another less well known option is Broccoli raab, or rapini, which produces slightly spicy sprouting broccoli shoots just 40 days after sowing. Turnip greens can also be ready around 4 weeks from sowing.

Kale sown outdoors in July can also be used for tender baby greens in fall, kept in place over the coldest months for a great source of winter greens for cooking.

Asian brassicas are a great crop for autumn (and winter too in a polytunnel). Quick cropping mustard greens, and a variety of Asian greens in the cabbage family can also be great to sow at this time of year.

As well as sowing Brassicas for the autumn and winter months, you can also sow a range of Brassicas, including sprouting broccoli, and spring cabbages, for yields in spring next year.

Carrots can also be sown up until July for baby carrots in autumn or a maincrop for winter use. This is the last month that you can sow carrots if you want to grow these late in the year and keep them in a protected growing area like a polytunnel over the winter months.

Carrots need a light and friable soil that is free-draining and relatively free from obstructions to root well. In heavier soils, short-rooted or globe types can be best.

Some varieties to consider include:

Of course, you can consider a range of heritage options and grow carrots that are not only orange, but in a range of different hues. so you can enliven salads and many different cooked dishes over the months to come.

Lettuce (& Other Leafy Greens)

Lettuce is another useful crop to sow in July. Of course, there are many different types and cultivars to choose from. Lettuce can be an easy crop to grow – you just have to make sure that it gets the right conditions and won’t bolt prematurely in hot weather.

You can still sow a quick crop of cut and come again lettuce, which can be ready to eat in as little as a month or so.

This month, and onwards, you can also consider sowing winter lettuces, that with some protection (such as that provided by a polytunnel) can be harvested even in the middle of winter.

Some good options for winter lettuce include:

There are also plenty of other leafy green salad crops to sow this month, including Asian brassicas as mentioned above, also endives, perpetual spinach and chard, land cress, miner’s lettuce, rocket etc… chards and spinach and the like can be sown in July for a supply of fresh greens through autumn and potentially right through to next spring.

Onions (Spring Onions/ Bunching Onions)

Many people will sow bulb onions in autumn for overwintering. But there is also the option to start a little sooner in planning for the months to come, and to sow salad onions in the summer.

Onions grown primarily for their greens rather than their bulbs can be a great option for smaller spaces, and can give you a useful yield through winter and spring. Like other alliums, they can also aid in pest control and be useful as companion crops.

Peas (Final Succession Sowing)

Peas can be sown in Succession from early in the year right through to July, and if you make the right choices and plant the right varieties at the right times, you can enjoy eating fresh peas from your garden over far more of the year than you may have imagined.

Peas for overwintering will not be sown until the autumn, but you may still be able to squeeze in one last crop of fresh peas before the frosts. If frosts are rather early in your area, you might not have time to grow peas for shelling. But mangetout or sugar snap peas should provide yields before the end of the season.

Radishes are another quick crop that can provide you with something to harvest in less than a couple of months. Radishes are best sown in small batches for regular harvests and you can keep succession sowing this month.

In July and August, you can also consider starting to sow different radishes, which will survive through winter in a polytunnel or other protected garden. Black Spanish radishes, and Daikon radishes are two options to consider sowing this month or next for cool season growing.

Of course, these are just some common crops that you can sow this month, and there are several other options that you might consider.

But if you are just getting started with gardening – it is not too late to get growing in July. And if you already have a garden, you should keep sowing this month in order to make the most of all the space available to you throughout the year.

Keep on top of watering and ventilation, and care for your tender young plants correctly, and they should give you food over the months to come. You will be able to fill gaps in your garden and make sure you have productive, living plants in the soil over as much of the year as possible.

Valladolid showing better numbers than Mérida in terms of hotel occupancy – The Yucatan Times

The Mexican Association of Hotels of Yucatan (AMHY) reported that during February 2022, the capital of Yucatan was not the one with the highest occupancy rate, but Valladolid with 66.35 percent, followed by Izamal with 54.33, Merida with 47, beach destinations with 36.51 and Chichen Itza with 34.21 percent.

AMHY’s current outlook shows that February reached 48 percent average hotel occupancy, with data from the 61 affiliated lodging sites in Merida, averaging 4,287 occupied rooms, or 47 percent.

The president of the association, Juan José Martín Pacheco, highlighted that in that same month, but in 2021, the occupation barely reached 24.45 percent, so, together with the epidemiological traffic light and the security it provides, 48 percent of this February 2022 offers good expectations for the next holiday period.

Both the AMHY and the National Chamber of Commerce, Services and Tourism (Canaco) expect Holy Week and Easter (from April 8 to 24) with encouraging spillovers, after two years of seeing these dates stopped due to the contingency caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. coronavirus.

“Due to the conditions of the epidemiological traffic light and the progress in the reinforcement of the vaccines against the coronavirus, a greater influx of visitors will be observed in the main destinations of Yucatan, mainly on the beaches and colonial cities. “

“Today, we see that the tourism sector has begun to pick up, and that is good news, because as more visitors, nationals, and foreigners arrive, the occupancy of hotel rooms increases, with benefits not only for those businesses but for others linked to this activity, such as handicraft stores, restaurants, tour operators, car rental companies, among others, which makes the spill reach all destinations in Yucatan.”

Martín Pacheco indicated that for this year’s statistics they expanded the number of hotels for sampling; In 2021, Mérida contemplated 53 hotels and this time 61, and in the interior of the state they went from 24 to 29 hotels, with 90 in total and 4 thousand 952 rooms in this 2022, while in 2021 there were 77 hotels and 4 thousand 381 rooms.

The Canaco Servytur also looks optimistically at these dates, as they expect to reach a spill of 1,200 million pesos, also taking 2019 as a reference, when they had a similar figure.

The prediction is expected thanks to the conditions of mobility and capacity in the businesses that the epidemiological traffic light allows in green color at 100 percent of the capacity; Iván Rodríguez Gasque, president of Canaco, highlighted that hotels, restaurants, craft shops, taxi drivers, travel agencies, car rental companies, airlines and truck companies, as well as tourist guides, among others, have a good outlook.

Well, his chamber estimates that hotels will reach 85 percent occupancy, considering reservations already made and assured that businesses are ready to receive visitors in different destinations in Yucatan, contemplating 80 percent local and 20 percent from abroad.

“When the restrictions on mobility and capacity in the country are lifted, as well as the progress in the reinforcement of the coronavirus vaccine, many Mexicans who had not left their place of origin for fear of getting sick, in this holiday period will look for some destination to walk or rest”.

The largest number of tourists, he said, is expected on beach destinations, Merida, Valladolid, Izamal, as well as in cenotes and archaeological sites.

Casper City Council and Visit Casper looking for synergy in new ‘Community Promotions’ partnership

CASPER, Wyo. — The Casper City Council has historically offered organizations that bring events into the community the opportunity to receive financial support through a program known as “Community Promotions.” In recent years, the city council has offered support with a total value of $25,000 per year through the program.

Most of the support the city has provided to organizations bringing in events has come in the form of waiving fees to rent city facilities and waiving fees for city services. Only a small percentage of the overall $25,000 has been provided to community organizations in the form of cash.

The city council on Tuesday, February 8 discussed a concept to partner with Visit Casper on the “Community Promotions” program. Under the new partnership, Visit Casper, which controls local lodging tax revenues, would provide any cash support to organizations while the city would continue to offer opportunities to waive facility rental fees and costs for other city services.

Both the city council and Visit Casper would appoint representatives to a review board that would consider requests for support from organizations bringing events into the community. That review board would make recommendations to meet cash funding requests to Visit Casper and would make recommendations for in-kind and facility requests to the city council.

City Manager Carter Napier told the city council on Tuesday that partnering with Visit Casper to handle community promotions could have the benefit of adding more expertise into the process to determine which organizations should receive support. The new process would also save the full council’s time by tasking the new review board with the duty to research and consider requests.

Council member Amber Pollock said that the idea for the new partnership came out of discussions that happened when the city council was considering Community Promotions requests in 2021. She said that the process seemed to duplicate some efforts that Visit Casper was already handling in terms of offering support to organizations bringing events into the community.

Visit Casper CEO and Natrona County Commissioner Brook Kaufman told the council that Visit Casper allocates about $200,000 per year in lodging tax revenues to support organizations that are bringing events into the community. She said that the main criterion Visit Casper looks at is whether the event being proposed will drive overnight stays in the community.

Kaufman added that much of the funding support Visit Casper offers goes toward helping organizations pay fees to rent city facilities, pointing to AAU Volleyball and Basketball tournaments held at the Casper Recreation Center. She said that Visit Casper typically writes checks for $10,000 to the Rec Center for AAU tournaments.

“We typically give grant money to offset venue costs in the city,” she said.

Kaufman added that there may be synergistic opportunities to make resources go farther if Visit Casper and the city cooperate on the process to consider requests to provide support to organizations bringing events into the community.

Council member Kyle Gamroth expressed hesitation as to whether the city council should be providing any type of support on Community Promotions when the city is already struggling to find money to fund a variety of needs and is already spending around $3 million per year to subsidize facilities such as the Rec Center, the Ford Wyoming Center and Hogadon Basin Ski Area.

Kaufman said that Visit Casper has historically seen value in providing contributions to organizations that bring in tournaments as these can generate significant economic impact for the Casper area by driving spending on things such as hotel stays, dining and shopping. She pointed to the example of AAU tournaments, which can bring in hundreds of families and which generate an estimated $900,000 per event in economic impact.

She said that some of the tournaments would likely not happen if organizations were not able to get some support from Visit Casper and/or the city.

Gamroth asked whether Visit Casper has any criteria for determining whether an organization needs funding in order to make an event happen, saying that some organizations see substantial profits from hosting tournaments or events. He questioned whether the city should waive facility or other service fees if an event is generating substantial profit for an organization.

Kaufman said that Visit Casper does look at profit and loss data from organizations that it supports with lodging tax dollars, noting again that Visit Casper’s decision-making process is tied to whether an event will drive overnight stays in the community.

Pollock said that partnering with Visit Casper would help the city council better quantify what impact offering Community Promotions support adds and whether offering that support is helping achieve goals the council wants to see through the program. She noted that Visit Casper has access to analytic tools that the city council doesn’t that could help gauge if Community Promotions dollars “are being useful for our community or if they are really not.”

Napier added that the new partnership between the city and Visit Casper could also help clarify the role that Advance Casper plays in the community, noting that he has had discussions with Kaufman and Advance Casper CEO Justin Farley.

Drawing a distinction between economic development and economic impact, Napier said that the goal would be for Advance Casper to focus solely on economic development efforts while Visit Casper and the city’s new partnership would handle economic impact efforts.

Mayor Ray Pacheco said that he has been involved in the Community Promotions process for eight years and that he thinks the proposed new process in partnership with Visit Casper seems like a smarter way to make use of city assets: “I think this is a much better way to do this.”

Pollock said that she thinks there needs to be some discussion about the difference in hard costs for the city between waiving facility fees versus waiving fees for other city services to help drive decisions about how much of those types of support the city council wants to make available through the new process.

Napier noted that the Community Promotions program has historically waived 50% of facility and in-kind costs. He said that costs such as staff overtime or direct purchases of materials needed to provide services for events are examples of the type of costs he is most concerned about as waiving fees for these types of services are hard costs the city would not otherwise incur. He said that while the council didn’t need to make an immediate decision about how much hard cost is comfortable incurring via the new Community Promotions partnership, direction from council on such questions is eventually needed as the city council works to adopt a new budget.

Council member Bruce Knell said that he understands organizations may need an initial subsidy in order to provide cash flow to make an event happen, but that once a profit is generated, that should be shared back with the city. Council member Steve Cathey likewise said he would like to see a clawback mechanism asking profitable event organizers to share some of those revenues back.

Kaufman said that there will be lessons that can be learned during the first year of the new partnership, and if it turns out that every organization receiving support is turning a substantial profit, adjustments will need to happen.

Vice Mayor Steve Freel said that he wants to be careful about being overly strict in the amount of support made available to organizations looking to bring events into Casper as the community could stand to lose substantial economic impact if organizations turn to other communities that offer more generous support to make events happen.

Knell said he agreed that a too-stringent process could cause Casper to lose events to communities like Cheyenne or Gillette.

The council gave its support in a straw poll at the end of Tuesday’s discussion for moving forward with the new Community Promotions partnership between the city and Visit Casper. Napier asked that the council give further thought to rules it wants to see written into the new partnership program and added that the first year is likely to be approached as a pilot year that can be adjusted in the future based on lessons learned.
