Brazil’s Bolsonaro booed as he lays out priorities to Congress

BRASILIA (Reuters) – Opposition lawmakers booed Brazil’s right-wing President Jair Bolsonaro on Wednesday as he addressed a joint session of Congress to lay out his legislative priorities for the year.

Bolsonaro, who is facing criticism for his handling of the world’s second-deadliest COVID-19 outbreak, said his government had earmarked enough funds to vaccinate Brazilians and the country would immediately acquire vaccines approved by its regulators.

Privatization of state companies, central bank independence, and administrative and tax reform were priorities of his government, he told Congress.

Bolsonaro also included in his priorities a planned “federative pact” reform bill that aims to revamp the financing ties between federal and local governments.

His agenda stands a good chance of passage after his allies took control of Congress on Monday in elections for the speakers of both chambers.

But as he began his address, opponents heckled the president. He replied: “See you in 2022,” in reference to next year’s presidential election when he plans to seek a second term.

Arthur Lira, newly elected speaker for the lower house and member of the right-wing Progressive Party, said the country needs emergency measures to assist Brazilians hit by the pandemic, while observing fiscal responsibility in government spending.

Stipends paid last year to Brazilians who lost their livelihoods in the pandemic boosted Bolsonaro’s popularity, but cost the Treasury more than 322 billion reais ($60 billion), a burden that has pushed government finances farther into the red.

The assistance program ended on Dec. 31 and lawmakers are looking for ways to extend it.

The newly-elected head of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco, of the center-right Democrats party, said the two leaders would meet with Bolsonaro’s economic team to find a way to aid the needy without breaking a mandatory spending cap.

Liberty trying to solve Friday ASUN puzzle

To help reduce travel and the risk of COVID, the ASUN adopted a new scheduling format this season where teams would play on back-to-back nights against the same team at the same site every Friday and Saturday during the men’s basketball season. Many mid-major conferences across the country have adopted a similar scheduling format for this season.

This has created an interesting dynamic with many teams splitting the weekend series. It’s also given an advantage to teams who are deeper and more mature in being able to bounce back quickly from a loss.

“These back-to-backs are different,” Liberty head coach Ritchie McKay said earlier this year. “There is a mental part of it that you have to be very mentally prepared for it. There is a mental part of this. You’ve got to have some maturity and mental toughness to get a sweep.”

For Liberty, it has been much more challenging to play at its best in the first game of the back-to-back with the Flames just 1-2 on Fridays in ASUN play and a perfect 3-0 on Saturday. The Flames’ only win on Friday came against Kennesaw State who is currently 0-8 in conference play this season. Liberty won that game by just six points while rebounding on Saturday to win by 29 points.

In the games on Friday, Liberty is allowing 68.3 points per game to its opponents, compared to just 51.6 points per game allowed on Saturday. The Flames enter this weekend’s games at Jacksonville (9-7, 3-3) holding opponents to 59.1 points per game on the season, good for 5th best in the country.

In the first Friday night ASUN game, which happened on New Year’s Day at Lipscomb, the Flames fell behind by 24 points in the first half. Without McKay on the sideline, the Flames responded with a 20-3 run to cut the Bisons lead to as close as four points in the second half but were unable to complete the comeback.

A week later, Liberty fell behind Kennesaw State, who resides in the ASUN basement, 12-0 and did not score a point for over eight minutes to begin the game. The Flames would ultimately turn things around and hold off the Owls for the team’s only win in conference play on Friday.

In the Flames’ previous Friday night game, Liberty led Stetson 29-20 late in the first half and maintained that lead until midway through the second half before ultimately falling to the Hatters on the road.

“It’s been like a Rubik’s Cube, for me” McKay said when asked about his team’s struggles on Friday. “Is it a coincidence that we just haven’t played great on Friday night or is there something to it? We’ve been searching for answers. We tried to tweak practice in the way we did it this week, but I also know our team is maturing.”

That Rubik’s Cube has an additional twist to it this week as the Flames prepare to face Jacksonville in Florida Friday and Saturday evening this weekend. Friday night’s game will be the first time Liberty has hit the court for a game in 13 days, having not played since the Flames defeated Stetson, 68-58, on Saturday, Jan. 16. With the extra week off, McKay gave his team off Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday a week ago, as the team practiced Monday and Thursday and had a scrimmage on Saturday.

“I’m not sure what to expect tomorrow,” McKay said. “I’ve watched other teams who have had mandatory breaks because of COVID or contact tracing and it seems like there is a little bit of rust to shake off. We play a really good Jacksonville team that is confident and well coached.”

The only previous time Liberty has had an extended break of more than six days this season was over Christmas when the Flames went 10 games in between games against Alcorn State and Lipscomb. Liberty lost that game to the Bisons in Nashville on Friday night, 77-70. The Flames played that game without having McKay on the bench or traveling to the game as he had tested positive for COVID-19.

“Not to sound like an excuse, but Scottie (James) and Myo (Baxter-Bell) and Georgie (Pacheco-Ortiz) and Caleb (Homesley), they knew,” McKay explained. You didn’t have to tell them, ‘Hey, this team is really good and they are capable.’ Those guys knew. They had been through it. They’ve been through the lows and felt the disappointment. This group is still in that practice. I hope we are better (Friday) night, but if we’re not, we’ll go back to the drawing board board and try to figure out how to do something different.”

East-West Seed Philippines honors 40 ‘farmer- heroes’ and holds vegetable field day – Mommy Iris | Top Lifestyle Blogger Philippines | Pinay Ads

Forty (40) vegetable farmers were hailed as ‘farmer-heroes’ by leading tropical vegetable seed company East-West Seed to mark its 40 years of “Growing a Healthier Tomorrow”. The awarding ceremony took place on October 7, 2022 in Lime Hotel, Pasay City.

On the following day, October 8, 2022, East-West Seed held a vegetable demo field day at Hortanova Research Center, Lipa City, Batangas for farmers and their business partners.

40 Farmers Hailed as Heroes

The 40 “farmer-heroes” from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao were recognized by East-West Seed for achieving success in vegetable farming, making significant contributions to their communities, and demonstrating innovativeness in adopting new technologies in farming.

“At East-West Seed, we believe that the farmers are our heroes. Because of their hard work we have something to eat every day. We want to give our farmers the honor and recognition that they truly deserve,” shared Jay Lopez, East-West Seed Philippines’ General Manager.

The company also sees these 40 farmer-heroes as role models to other people in showing how vegetable farming can enrich lives.

“Simula nang nagtanim ako ng Macho sweet corn, tumamis din ang aking buhay! Dahil sa sweet corn, maraming first time akong nakuha – first time makapunta sa Maynila, makasakay sa eroplano, makatulog sa Shangri-La Hotel, magkaroon ng sariling sasakyan. Yung mga hindi ko pinangarap, yung akala ko sa panaginip lang magkakatotoo, nagkatotoo dahil sa awa ng Diyos at sa sweet corn, (Since I planted Macho sweet corn, my life has become sweeter too! Because of sweet corn, I got many firsts – first time to go to Manila, get on a plane, sleep at the Shangri-La Hotel, have my own car. The things I never dreamed of, the things I thought that would only come true in my dreams, became a reality because of God’s mercy and sweet corn,” shared Rubisper Udal from Bukidnon, one of the 40 farmer-hero awardees.

Umangat po ang buhay namin at nakapag-iipon na rin po kami (Because of our income from growing vegetables, we were able to buy land, various farming machineries, such as rotovator, water pump, and mini tiller. Before, we only depended on the pension, but now we have extra income. Our life improved and we were able to save),” shared Eden Arquero, another farmer-hero awardee from Nueva Vizcaya.

Lopez said that through the farmer-heroes’ success stories, they hope to inspire others to choose vegetable farming as their careers.

Vegetables take center stage

Over forty (40) different types of East-West Seed vegetable varieties and flowers were displayed in the demo field day of East-West Seed in its research center in Lipa City, Batangas.

Aside from the company’s top varieties that have helped increase the income of farmers for many years, the demo field also included exciting and unique vegetable varieties such as Morado purple corn, Sophia butternut pumpkin, and Ilocana short ampalaya.

Most of our vegetable seed varieties are bred here in the Philippines to ensure that they will grow well under our country’s growing conditions, address Filipino farmers’ needs, and suit the taste and preferences of the Filipino consumers. Our varieties also give higher yield and are more resistant to pests and diseases,” shared Lopez.

Stories of farmers, the latest innovations in seed technology and East-West Seed’s first museum that depicts the company’s history for over four decades were also showcased during the event.

East-West Seed was founded in Lipa City, Batangas in 1982 by Filipino seed trader Benito Domingo and Dutch seedsman and World Food Prize Laureate 2019 Simon Groot. The company has expanded to 14 other countries in Asia, Africa, and Latin America and has served over 23 million farmers worldwide.

“The world will need an additional 730 million tons of fruits and vegetables by 2050 with the predicted population growth. We need to help our smallholder farmers and encourage more people, especially the youth, to go into the agriculture sector to meet this growing food demand, ” said Lopez.
