🚹 51 DAYS TO GO. Here’s ~900 ways to make #AmericaBlueIn22 at the Federal & State Level

(Yes, I’ll be reposting an updated version of this diary daily through late October)

As of this writing I’ve raised over $680,000 for Democrats up & down the ballot this cycle with the help of nearly 4,000 unique donors so far. I’m hoping to reach $2 million by Election Day.

It’s important to note that I do not have a PAC! The links below simply go to ActBlue pages which allow you to donate to multiple candidates at once.

100% of donations raised through these links goes directly to the individual candidate campaigns & left-leaning organizations listed on the pages linked to.

Donations are split evenly across all listed races by default, but you can also pick & choose which to donate to using the “customize amounts” option at each link.

U.S. HOUSE (AL – NE)

WHAT ABOUT STATE LEGISLATURES?

We’re all sick & tired of election experts lecturing us about how vitally important it is to win as many state legislative races as possible; states are the laboratories of democracy, state legislatures control redistricting, voting laws and abortion rights, etc etc etc.

Here’s the problem: Unlike statewide races, where most people know which ones are blue, purple or red…hardly anyone knows whether “Michigan’s 54th State House District” or “Iowa’s 43rd State Senate District” are remotely winnable. Hell, most people who live in the district probably don’t know.

I DECIDED TO RESOLVE THIS PROBLEM.

There’s nearly 7,400 state legislative districts nationally, but LA, MS, NJ & VA hold their legislative elections in odd-numbered years, and CT legislative candidates pretty much all use the states public campaign finance option.

In the other 45 states, around ~1,200 are considered competitive, but only ~720 competitive districts have Democratic candidates with ActBlue accounts. I have over 500 of those listed below w/more on the way. If your favorite candidate isn’t listed, please keep in mind that I can’t possibly include them all, and in fact doing so would defeat the whole point.

All districts listed below include the partisan lean rating according to Dave’s Redistricting. With a handful of exceptions, all are ranked R/D +10 or closer.

States where Republicans currently control both the state House and Senate but Democrats have a decent chance at flipping one or both:

States where Republicans currently control one chamber, Democrats control the other, and either could flip either way:

States where Democrats currently control both chambers but one or both are at risk of being lost to GOP control:

States where Republicans currently control both chambers; little chance of flipping either one blue, but supermajorities can be broken/prevented:

Here’s the actual candidates included at each link:

So You Think You Can Dance 2022 Recap: Choreography Round

We’ve seen dozens of auditions in various dance styles over the last three weeks, and after tonight, only the best of the best will make it through to the Top 12 after tonight’s Big Cut.

the Choreography Round consists of three rounds led by choreographer Mandy Moore. The first round will be in their own dance style, the second round will be in partner work, and the third round will be a group routine. Contestants will be cut after each round until only 12 remain.

Mandy Moore teaches routines to each group of contestant in each dance style, and we see one dancer’s foot dripping blood by the end of rehearsals.

Round 1 – Contemporary – Matthew Deloch, Samuel McWilliams, Waverly Fredericks, Thiago Pacheco

The “Contemporary Boys” performs a routine to “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” and Waverly and Samuel outshined the other two, in my opinion.

Matthew, Samuel, Thiago and Waverly move on.

We see a montage of the rest of Round 1.

Konnor and Keaton move on. Sage moves on. Alexis moves on. Several others move on who are not named.

Round 1 – Contemporary – Mia Mellican, Jaliyah “Juicy” Kersten, Madison Moser, Maci Montes

This group performs to the same Whitney song and while Maci’s performance isn’t technically perfect, she is the most fun to watch!

Madison and Maci are cut. Mia and Jaliyah move on.

Round 1 – Hip Hop – Essence Wilmington, Sara Ito, Madina Beisekeyeva, Brianna Grey

Essence absolutely blew them all out of the water with that routine!

Brianna is told to come back and do a solo. Essence, Sara and Madina move on.

Round 1 – Solo – Brianna Grey

Brianna dances for her life with a solo Hip Hop routine in attempt to impress the judges and move on. Her performance is much stronger this time, with some uniqueness she lacked last time.

tWitch says yes, JoJo says no, Matthew says yes.

It’s time for Round 2 and all the dancers are paired into partners and rehearse with Mandy Moore.

Round 2 – Partners – Beau Harmon and Jaliyah “Juicy” Kersten, Thiago Pacheco and Alexis Warr

Jaliyah and Thiago were best and I would have liked to see them partnered together.

Beau, Jaliyah, Thiago and Alexis all move on.

We see Round 2 continue and several more move on, including Keaton and Carter, while several others are cut, including Sage, Jordan and Sara.

Round 2 – Partners – Andrew Park and Madina Beisekeyeva, Matthew Deloch and Brianna Grey

All danced well, but Andrew and Madina had some serious unexpected chemistry.

Matthew moves on. Madina, Andrew and Brianna get cut.

Round 2 – Partners – James (Brianna’s boyfriend) and Virginia Crouse, Waverly Fredericks and Jordan Betcher

James let me down, but Waverly always impresses. And both girls didn’t perform their best.

James, Virginia, Waverly and Jordan all move on.

Round 2 – Partners – Samuel “Hooliboy” Kyei and JoJo Lokhorst, Essence Wilmington and Samuel McWilliams

I expected so much more from Samuel Kyei, JoJo was all right, but Essence is going to win this whole thing I’m calling it right now.

Essence, Samuel McWilliams and JoJo move on. Samuel “Hooliboy” Kyei gets cut.

The remaining dancers now prepare for the final round: the group routine. They all rehearse with Mandy Moore to perform a routine that combines the many different styles.

Round 3 – Group Routine

They all perform the group routine, some dancers clearly outshine others. I liked the way the routine was split between a collective group number and separate smaller ones in different styles, but in my professional opinion as a choreographer, the opening was very repetitive.

The judges deliberate, and the results will come in next week’s episode!

This episode was incredibly fast-paced, so I appreciate you all bearing with me as I recapped everything of importance! The live blog will be taken over by MJ next week when we find out who makes the Top 12, and I’ll be back for the June 22 episode!

Herbs for Weight Loss Resistance | The American Chiropractor | JUNE 2022

Finding a way to achieve and maintain a healthy weight in a sustainable way can improve multiple long-term health parameters, and weight loss is a journey with which many people are familiar. Between 2013 and 2016, nearly half of all U.S. adults attempted weight loss within the previous year, with a majority being women. Medicinal herbs can help break through the wall of weight loss resistance, support the body throughout the weight loss process, and provide other health benefits.

Insulin Resistance

Insulin is a hormone that sends a growth signal to the body, ultimately resulting in the storage of glucose; when insulin is secreted in excess, glucose will be stored as fat. During a state of “insulin resistance,” the body stops responding to proper signals, so both insulin and glucose levels remain high. This can wreak havoc on the normal process of metabolism, often resulting in weight accumulation and sugar cravings.

Herbal support for weight loss resistance due to insulin resistance may include gymnema, cinnamon, and berberine. Gymnema (Gymnema sylvestre) may help with sugar cravings by blocking sweet receptors on the tongue, impairing the ability to taste sweetness.[1] It also can re-sensitize insulin receptors on cells which can help with weight loss as well as insulin resistance.[1] Overall, gymnema has been reported to be very safe, but clinical studies suggest a minimum of two to three months of consumption for best results.[2] Cinnamon (Cinnamomum zeylanicum/verum) is associated with downregulating insulin resistance, lowering fasting plasma glucose, and working as a broad-spectrum anti-inflammatory compound as well as aiding in digestive health, all of which can help with weight loss resistance.[3] Finally, berberine found in phellodendron (Phellodendron amurense) has been found to be as effective as metformin for insulin resistance and works via several different mechanisms including inhibiting adipogenesis, relieving inflammation and fibrosis in the liver, and promoting glucose uptake.[4]

Thyroid Hormone

Thyroid hormone plays a significant role in metabolism and can be targeted to overcome weight loss resistance. The conversion from thyroxine (T4) to the biologically active triiodothyronine (T3) is an important step in activating mitochondria, allowing them to function at maximal capacity. This can help boost metabolism which may then help with weight loss. The Ayurvedic herb coleus (Coleus forskohlii) has been studied for its beneficial role in weight loss and blood pressure regulation.[5] It contains a compound called forskolin that acts like a second messenger in cells to stimulate secretion of T4 and T3.6 Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled studies have found that ingestion of forskolin in conjunction with a hypocaloric diet significantly improved insulin concentrations and insulin resistance, as well as led to improvements in waist to hip ratio, body fat percentage, and fat mass in overweight and obese individuals.[7, 8]

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is another herb that may help with the conversion of T4 to T3, particularly in cases of subclinical hypothyroidism.[9 ]Approximately 80 percent of the conversion to T3 occurs in the liver, so supporting the liver, specifically phase two liver metabolism, can also help with weight loss. Herbs such as rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis), schisandra (Schisandra chinensis), and milk thistle (Silybum marianum) can upregulate liver detoxification enzymes, supporting the liver and potentially T3 conversion.[2]

Sex Hormones

Because sex hormones contribute to weight loss resistance, they are also a possible target for intervention, especially in women where estrogen and progesterone have significant effects. For most women, a state of high estrogen and low progesterone is not well tolerated, so the adipose tissue will accumulate estrogen to try to clear it from the blood stream. This triggers inflammation in the adipose tissue, which may contribute to systemic inflammation. Similarly, androgen levels can begin to drop due to adrenal stress and fatigue. As exhaustion and stress set in, cortisol levels rise and interfere with progesterone metabolism, exacerbating the issue. Therefore, oftentimes the goal with weight loss resistance due to sex hormone disturbances is to support estrogen metabolism and reduce overall estrogen excess.

…“Inflammation also suppresses leptin, the appetite-regulating hormone that signals the brain to stop eating…”

Supporting phase two liver enzymes through rosemary schisandra, and milk thistle may help clear excess estrogen. Alternatively, chaste tree berry (Vitex agnus-castus) and white peony (Paeonia lactiflora) can support healthy estrogen and progesterone metabolism by supporting ovarian production of progesterone.[10] White peony is also beneficial for irritability, anxiety, and premenstrual syndrome.[11] Additionally, supporting good androgenic power may help women with weight loss. Both tribulus (Tribulus terrestris) and ashwagandha are androgen modulators and can help maintain muscle mass, support bone density, and aid in stress hormone recovery in women.[12] When healthy androgenic power is maintained, women may lose weight easier as well as build muscle and bone density.

Inflammation

Finally, inflammation can be a major barrier to losing weight. Inflammation can become uncontrolled in conditions of overweight and obesity, making it very difficult to lose weight. Inflammation causes the release of immunological messages which trigger cytokines

and interfere with the body’s insulin response and insulin receptor sites, causing cellular damage. In response, the pancreas releases more insulin, which triggers even more inflammation. Inflammation also suppresses leptin, the appetite-regulating hormone that signals the brain to stop eating but reducing inflammation can help re-sensitize the brain to leptin.

For inflammation-related weight loss resistance, turmeric (Curcuma longa) is a great option.[5] There are many clinical studies supporting the role of turmeric as an anti-inflammatory agent. Other anti-inflammatory herbs include Indian frankincense (Boswellia serrata), saffron (Crocus sativus), nettle leaf (Urtica dioica), and rosemary. Many of these botanicals have been classified as regulators of oxidative stress, possessing both anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Combining medicinal herbs with anti-inflammatory dietary interventions can provide a compound effect for addressing both weight loss and inflammation.

Weight loss resistance can be very frustrating but supporting the body and its biochemistry can help create a manageable, sustainable weight loss plan. Healthy dietary modifications combined with medicinal herbs that target insulin resistance, thyroid hormone, sex hormones, and inflammation can have synergistic effects on weight loss and overall health.
