DEWALT® Launches 12 Volt MAX* Lithium Ion Imaging Thermometer | Hot Bike Magazine

TOWSON, Md. (April 10, 2012) – Today, DEWALT announces the launch of its 12 Volt MAX* Lithium Ion Imaging Thermometer (DCT416S1), which has been designed to allow professionals to easily and accurately measure temperatures of various surfaces and identify trouble spots. The imaging thermometer measures temperature and displays both visual and thermal images. The images can be blended together to pinpoint an issue. The DCT416S1 is ideal for professionals such as electricians locating overloaded circuits or wiring issues, HVAC service crews testing the temperatures from ducts, remodelers finding leaks around doors and windows, or maintenance crews diagnosing equipment issues.

“The DEWALT Innovation Team recognized the need for a tool that combines the compact size and value of the existing 12V MAX* IR Thermometer with the high-functionality of a traditional thermal camera,” said Christine Potter, director of marketing, DEWALT. “With the launch of the new Imaging Thermometer, we’re excited to offer an innovative jobsite solution that measures temperature, reports results in an easy-to-read display, and clearly pinpoints trouble spots at a price point more accessible to contractors.”

The new imaging thermometer measures between 14-degrees Fahrenheit and 480-degrees Fahrenheit. The 2.2-inch color screen has the ability to change from an all-thermal, to blended image, to all-visual display. The thermal images use color range to depict cold and warm temperatures, while the visual images are photos of the actual surface being scanned. Contractors can change the type of image they would like to display with intuitive toggle buttons. By offering the image blend feature, professionals are able to communicate issues and plans for repair with their peers or customers.

In addition to capturing the visual and thermal images in bitmap format, the DCT416S1‘s micro SD card allows contractors to capture, save and transfer images to designers, foremen or customers. The imaging thermometer also includes report-writing software for further analysis of trouble spots.

The DCT416S1 uses non-contact temperature measurement for ease of use over distance and accuracy, while the adjustable emissivity improves accuracy across a wide range of materials. A tracking feature can be enabled that automatically shows the hottest (red cursor) and coldest (blue cursor) spots in the viewing area. With the ergonomic 12V MAX* handle design and lightweight battery, the tool is well balanced and comfortable to use. The sliding lens cover protects the image lens from damage.

The DCT416S1 will be available in June 2012 through industrial distributors. The kit will include one DCT416 imaging thermometer, one micro SD card, report writing software, one 12 Volt MAX* Lithium Ion battery pack, one fast charger and a kit box. The tool is expected to retail for approximately $999.00, and it will come with a three-year limited warranty, one-year free service contract and 90-day money-back guarantee.

For first time, women represented in all parliaments of the world

In its latest annual report, the global body dedicated to promoting peace through parliamentary diplomacy and dialogue, also said that women’s participation has never been as diverse as it is in many countries today.

The findings are based on data from the 47 countries that held elections last year.

These polls saw women take an average of 25.8 per cent of the seats available, representing a 2.3 percentage point increase, since elections were last held.

Smallest increase

Despite this positive data, IPU noted that it is nonetheless the smallest increase in women’s participation in six years. The 0.4 per cent rise means that the global share of women in parliamentary office, stood at 26.5 per cent, as the New Year dawned.

The other bad news is that at this rate, it will take another 80 years to reach gender parity in parliament, said Martin Chungong, IPU Secretary General:

“Currently, one of the foremost obstacles, is the climate of sexism, harassment, violence against women that we are witnessing across the world”, he said.

“It is a phenomenon that is pervasive across the world and it is not endemic to any particular region. And we can estimate that this is having a toll on the participation of women in political life.”

Women premiers exit early

The IPU chief referred to the resignations of New Zealand and Scotland premiers Jacinda Ardern and Nicola Sturgeon, saying that it was widely held that they had stepped down after being harassed.

Mr. Chungong also pointed to other IPU data showing pervasive and increasing trend of harassment, sexism and violence against women, that deters them from participating in the political processes in their countries.

Lesia Vasylenko, President of the IPU Bureau of Women MPs, said that every woman elected, “brings parliaments one step closer to becoming more inclusive and representative and it’s great to see much more diversity”.

But overall, she added, “progress is far too slow with half the world’s population still vastly under-represented. There is an urgent need to change this, to strengthen democracy everywhere.”

The President of the IPU, Duarte Pacheco, called on male colleagues in every parliament worldwide, “to work with their female counterparts to move forward and accelerate the pace of change.”

Some highlights

There were encouraging signs that progress is at least happening. Brazil saw a record 4,829 women who identify as Black, running for election, out of nearly 27,000 standing overall.

In the USA, a record 263 women of colour stood in the Congressional Midterms. And LGBTQI+ representation in Colombia, tripled, from two to six members of the Congress.

In France, 32 candidates from a minority background were elected to the new National Assembly, an all time high of 5.8 per cent of the total.

Leading the way

Six countries worldwide now have gender parity, thanks to New Zealand joining the club last year, which also includes, Cuba, Mexico, Nicaragua, Rwanda and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) – the top nations in the IPU rankings for women membership.

Rwanda holds the top spot, with women occupying just over 60 percent of parliamentary seats in the lower house. Tellingly however, even there, women still only occupy 34.6 percent of seats in the upper chamber.

Sacramento’s Miller Park becomes a safe ground for those experiencing homelessness • Sacramento News & Review

By Ken Magri

This winter’s unusually cold, windy and rainy weather has created big challenges for Sacramento’s unhoused population. Rising water levels at the Sacramento and American rivers have flooded many traditional locations used by unhoused campers. Constant rain has rendered the ground sopping wet everywhere, making it difficult to keep possessions dry.

In an effort to alleviate the difficulty for at least some, Sacramento’s city and county governments — and the local nonprofit First Step Communities — teamed up to provide 15 travel-trailers, with added services, for people who are homeless to use at Miller Park.

It is part of the “Safe Ground” campaign created by the city to help reduce Sacramento’s steadily growing homeless population. The 2022 estimate of the number of Sacramento County homeless people, done by the point-in-time count, reported an increase to 9,278 persons, up from 5,570 in 2019. A dramatic increase was also observed in homeless people who are vehicle-camping.

First Steps Communities operates a traditional 80-bed shelter near Loaves & Fishes, and a youth shelter on Del Paso Boulevard called The Grove. Additionally, it operates a tent facility in Auburn that can accommodate up to 50 homeless individuals.

First Step Communities was called in by the City of Sacramento a few years ago to operate a tent site under the W-X section of Interstate 80, during a construction phase. Later, the organization was contracted by the city to operate Safe Ground sites in Miller Park.

Last year, the city government set up 60 high-quality tents at Miller Park, spanning Marina View Drive and paralleling the Sacramento River. The tent village was fenced off for safety and included garbage pick-up, bathroom and shower services, and a dining area. Parking spaces were also provided at Miller Park for vehicle dwellers, so they could access the same services.

Staff was on-site 24 hours a day, and tenants worked with a case management team to help end the cycle of homelessness, which is a major priority of the Safe Ground project. The average length-of-stay for a tenant was 68 days.

But last September’s surprising heat wave made the tents too hot and caused some tenants to be relocated. Likewise, there were more issues this winter with the severity of storms. “The previous tents were mostly destroyed during the New Year’s weather event and people had to be evacuated,” said Zach Freels, chief of staff to City Councilmember Katie Valenzuela, whose 4th district includes Miller Park.

“Yeah, the tents were a good deal. I liked it there because it was safe,” said Scott (last name withheld), an unhoused man who now lives in a makeshift tent at the end of Broadway, just outside the park. A few of his homeless neighbors said they were among those tenants originally housed in the Safe Ground tents.

But people living less than 100 yards away could not be placed within the Safe Ground trailer site, which still has vacancies. “They would need to call 211; we don’t do walk-ups,” said Joe Pacheco, coordinator of the Safe Ground project for First Step Communities. “We get referrals from the Sacramento City Department of Community Response. They are responsible for identifying clients and bringing them in.”

Could the tents make a comeback once the weather improves? “As of right now, tents are not slated to return to the park due to their lack of resiliency to extreme weather events,” said Freels. “Trailers are the safest temporary option that the city had available to reopen the park.”

The travel-trailers were provided to the city by Gov. Gavin Newsom. Purchased in 2020, they were originally located at Cal Expo and used as temporary shelters during the pandemic. Now situated near the front of Miller Park, they are intended to act as a temporary village of sorts, until the city and county governments work together to identify longer-term sources of emergency shelter. The city plans to add hundreds of beds to its current inventory of more than 1,100.

Each of the Wildwood, Bullet and Premiere brand travel-trailers at Miller Park sleeps three people. But they are not hooked up for water or gas. “We provide showers and restrooms, they are serviced three times a week,” Pacheco said. ”We have clean, drinkable water and we provide two meals a day.”

The Safe Ground space also includes 24-hour security, daily garbage service, covered tables and chairs for outdoor eating, and staff services. Tenants may come and go as they wish, but must visit guests outside of the fenced off area. Site Manager Demetrius Turner works to supervise the grounds, coordinate activities and act as a liaison, solving issues that come up between tenants and service providers.

After being homeless for five years, Leonard (who did not want to give a last name) is one of the current tenants at Safe Ground. “I am glad to have this, because without it I would be cold and wet at night,” he said. “Out on the street it’s always harder. Here I don’t have to worry about being hungry or staying warm.”

Last December when the trailer site was originally approved, Councilmember Valenzuela voiced her support. “The Safe Ground at Miller Park has been an incredible resource, allowing us to address the urgency of the homelessness crisis in our community,” she said in a press release after the vote. “This new setup will provide guests with a much better experience with climate control and other amenities that were not previously available.”

The Miller Park site only lasts until May. The intention is to move the trailers to a new, possibly larger location, Pacheco said. (First Step Communities maintains an Amazon wishlist of donations needed for its homeless clients, including toiletries, plastic cutlery, bottled water and snacks.)

Last December, Sacramento city and county governments agreed to create 10 new “encampment engagement teams” staffed by teams of 50 people. These teams would “provide intensive outreach, assessment, navigation, service delivery and housing to as many people as possible,” according to a press release from Mayor Darrell Steinberg’s office.

Latin American phase of Synod: Toward a “Church of the people” – Vatican News

By Joseph Tulloch

From the 17th to the 20th March, synod organisers are meeting in Bogotá, Colombia, to draft a synthesis of the Continental Stage of the synod in Latin America and the Caribbean.

This document will be used as a basis for discussion at the upcoming General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops in Rome this October.

Vatican News’ Fr. Johan Pacheco is in Bogotá for the meeting, and spoke with Fr Ricardo González, a member of the drafting committee, about its work.

The drafting process

The process of putting together the document, Fr González explained, was carried out by a group of twelve individuals, “priests and laypeople, women and men”, chosen by the bishops of Latin America to “help in pastoral and theological reflection”.

In drafting the document, he said, they drew on the material produced by previous regional assemblies, which had asked the faithful from across the region about their experiences of and views on the church.

Contributions from marginalised groups – indigenous Amazonian peoples and Latin Americans of African descent – were also added to the mix.

All of this material, Fr González said, was prayed over and discussed, before a final synthesis was then produced.

This process of discernment and drafting, he added, was “a very enriching experience of living together as brothers and sisters, of listening to each other despite the differences in our vocations and ministries, all of us as members of a ‘Church of the people’”.

The voice of the People of God

Fr González stressed, moreover, that the process of drafting the document was not about producing new material, but rather accurately summarising the voices of the faithful who had been consulted in earlier stages.

“We are not going to say something that has not already been heard,” he said. “We are simply going to give shape to it, trying to be as faithful as possible to the concerns of these regional assemblies.”

For this reason, he said, the final document has been broken into various sections, each focusing on a different priority which had emerged from the earlier stages of the synod.

The key here, Fr González said, was to identify the “constants”, the points which emerged regularly from those consulted.

The end goal, he stressed, was to produce a document in which “everyone sees themselves reflected.”
