OBITUARY: Leilani Noelle Jones Pole, 1975-2023

Leilani Noelle Jones Pole was born in Eureka at St. Joseph’s
Hospital on September 13, 1975, to Edith Norton and Arthur Jones. She
was a member of the Hoopa Valley Tribe and lived most of her life in
Hoopa. Leilani graduated from Hoopa High as Senior Class President in
1993. In high school she participated in softball, cheerleading and
basketball, and during her youth she was active in participating in
her traditional dances. She was an avid sports fan of her home team,
the Hoopa Warriors, and she would be the driver to the games on the
road for her nephew.

Leilani believed in
the healing power of herbs and holistic medicine; she was always
prepared with the perfect cure for whatever ailment a person had.
Leilani loved gathering roots and sticks for baskets and preparing
the materials for making regalia and working on her Indian dress, and
she loved gardening, reading and music. She attended many concerts
over the years and has mourned passed singers as if they were members
of the family. She was absolutely psyched to have the chance to see
the Red Hot Chili Peppers perform in the Hoopa High gymnasium and
meeting Kid Rock backstage and having her photo taken with him.

Leilani was a
worker-bee and enjoyed many jobs within the community. After high
school she would start working as a tree counter for Ron Lawton in
the Forks of the Salmon area after which she became employed with
Hoopa Tribal Forestry’s Wildlife Division on their Spotted
Owl/Marbled Murrelet Crew. During these years she would start a
family giving birth to Sloan, Minnie, Isabelle and later Cleora.
While raising a family, she would go on to graduate from the CR
Police Academy and worked at Hoopa Tribal Police, transferring later
to the Hoopa Tribal Court where she worked as a Truancy Juvenile
Officer. She would then run for Tribal Council and serve as a
councilmember for three terms (six years). She had decided to run
again and is on the ballot for the General Election to be held this
June 2023. This summer she also worked for Hoopa Tribal Fire at base
camp for the fires in Willow Creek. She was presently employed and
working at the Office of Emergency Services for the Hoopa Tribe.

When Leilani was
told she’d be a grandmother she cried with joy and was excited for
this new role in life as she herself was very close to her
grandparents. For her, family was life and she always included them
in her dreams and plans whether it was wanting to start a family
business or a commune, she was always full of ideas. Besides being
the best mother to her four beautiful girls, she was also a maternal
figure to many, and loved hosting large family gatherings. Her
passing comes as an unexpected, heartbreaking shock for her family
and friends, as we all know she wasn’t finished with everything she
wanted to do or accomplish, she had so much more to offer. That
unique spark and personality that Leilani possessed will forever be
remembered. She blessed us with many happy memories that are all we
have now. Therefore, they are more precious as we start to realize
she is no longer with us, but we know that if she was busy here, then
she is already taking notes on what needs to be done to improve what
she can with that unique spark and personality that she takes with
her on the journey, that she is now on. We love you, our family.

Leilani was
predeceased by her grandparents; Minnie McWilliams and Sam Jones,

Mexican Actor Rebecca Jones Dies at 63

Rebecca Jones died on Wednesday, March 22, her agency confirmed in a press release.

“It’s with profound sadness that we inform you of the death of our beloved and admired Rebecca Anne Jones Fuentes (May 21, 1957 – March 22, 2023),” read part of the statement shared on Instagram.

No details regarding the cause of death have been released at this time. However, she battled ovarian cancer for several years after she was diagnosed in 2017.

In November 2022, her agency shared that she was admitted to a hospital in Mexico City for a “lung infection and pneumonia.”

In the company of her loved ones

The statement confirming her death indicated that Jones was surrounded by her loved ones during her final moments.

“Rebecca was accompanied at all times by her loved ones. She left in peace and with the utmost gratitude for her audience,” the statement continued.

Additionally, the statement noted that in the following days they will reunite to fulfill her final wishes.

Telemundo’s Verónica Bastos shared on “Hoy Día” that she was able to confirm with a source close to the late actor that Jones spent her last moments with her son, Maximiliano Camacho.

“She has a wonderful son, Maximiliano, who they tell me was the one who accompanied her until her last moment in her bed, tucking her in and with her relatives and the people she loved the most surrounding her. They tell me that Rebecca died peacefully. She died peacefully because she had the people she loved the most around her. The great actor Rebecca Jones died in her house this morning,” she said.

Her friends express their condolences

After the news of Jones’ death, people remembered the actor on social media.

In an interview with “Hoy Día,” her close friend Arlette Pacheco mourned the artist’s death and shared some of Jones’ most special traits.

“I am so sad. (She was) a great woman, a beautiful woman, a warm woman, a happy woman, a wonderful great actor who had a successful career. I will keep her in my heart… (She was) very special, very beautiful, very intelligent, highly educated… she enjoyed life,” she said.

Consuelo Duval was one of the first celebrities to react to the sad news on social media.

Arlette Pacheco also shared a heartfelt message on her Instagram.

Actor Eduardo España said he was shocked to learn about the actor’s death.

Actor Merle Uribe described Jones’ death as “an irreparable loss.”

Actor Ana Serradilla wrote that she learned a lot from Jones in her emotional message.

“Rebecca, may your trip be wonderful and may God embrace you forever,” actor and singer Laura Flores said in an Instagram video.

The actor Maky Moguilevsky shared a video of one of the last moments she spent with Jones.

“I will always treasure the moments of laughter in our dressing rooms,” Cecilia Suárez wrote remembering the special moments she shared with Jones.

Jones’ health problems

In 2017, the actor was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, a disease that she dealt with for two years. She successfully underwent surgery and chemotherapy.

After reports indicated that her cancer had returned, in 2020 Jones denied the news during an interview with the show “Ventaneando.”

“It is absolutely false, they are misinforming the public… I am in complete remission from cancer,” she said during the interview.

However, in August 2022, her ex-partner and father of her only child, actor Alejandro Camacho, revealed that Jones had cancer again. He did not give any further details.

“Rebecca is perfectly fine, she is working, she is healthy. She indeed has cancer, but she is such a strong woman and she has so much strength that she is fine,” Quién magazine reported at the time.

In November of the same year, Jones was admitted to the hospital due to respiratory complications. She was forced to leave what would be her last television acting job.

Through her representatives, it was reported that the Mexican star was taken to the ABC Observatorio Hospital in Mexico City because she contracted a “lung infection.” It also noted that she was in intensive care and in delicate condition.

Jones overcame this difficult health moment and withdrew from the public eye for a few weeks.

The actor reappeared on March 5 for a private premiere organized by her work team and colleagues from the film “Nada Que Ver,” the last film project she took part participated in.

I found an abundance of cucumbers and tomatoes at an Essex market during the vegetable crisis – Essex Live

If you shop at a supermarket for your fruit and veg you might have noticed the empty shelves or restrictions on how many items you can buy recently. Supermarkets are battling with a shortage of vegetables, with the National Farming Union (NFU) warning the crisis could last another month.

Photos of barren vegetable aisles and signs warning customers they can only have one of each item have been littered across the internet, as poor weather in Spain and North Africa is thought to have tightened the supermarket supply. However, there are other places you can shop.

I visited Chelmsford market to see if the vegetable shortage was limited to the supermarkets or not, and found there is an abundance of veg if you know where to look. The market stall was filled with all manner of veggies, including the sought-after cucumbers and tomatoes.

The prices didn’t seem to have been hiked up amid the supermarket crisis, with cucumbers costing just 70 pence a piece. There are shortages of tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, salad bags, broccoli and cauliflowers in the big chain stores, but all of those can be found at the market.

Cucumbers, peppers and tomatoes are very sought after

Last Monday Lidl became the latest supermarket to introduce buyer limits but stressed it continues to have good availability across the majority of its stores. On Wednesday, Tesco followed Aldi, Asda and Morrisons in doing so too.

The National Farmers’ Union (NFU) said shortages of some fruit and vegetables in UK supermarkets could be “the tip of the iceberg”. Deputy president Tom Bradshaw said reliance on imports has left the UK vulnerable to “shock weather events”.

Peppers are in shortage in supermarkets, but not on the market

Soaring energy bills exacerbated by the war in Ukraine have also put off some UK vegetable growers, he added. He said the UK has “hit a tipping point” and needs to “take command of the food we produce” amid “volatility around the world” caused by the war in Europe and climate change.

Queen Elizabeth II’s Coffin Makes Journey Through Scotland

Queen Elizabeth II’s flag-draped coffin is passing through the rugged Scottish countryside Sunday on a final journey from her beloved summer estate Balmoral Castle to London, with mourners quietly lining roads and some tossing flowers to honor the monarch who died after 70 years on the throne. The hearse drove past piles of bouquets and other tributes as it led a seven-car cortege from Balmoral, where the queen died Thursday, for a six-hour trip through Scottish towns to Holyroodhouse palace in Edinburgh. The late queen’s coffin was draped in the Royal Standard for Scotland and topped with a wreath made of flowers from the estate, including sweet peas, one of the queen’s favorites. “A sad and poignant moment as Her Majesty, The Queen leaves her beloved Balmoral for the final time,” the first minister of Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon tweeted. “Today, as she makes her journey to Edinburgh, Scotland will pay tribute to an extraordinary woman.” Crowds lined parts of the route as the nation mourns its longest-reigning monarch, the only one most Britons have ever known. In the Scottish village of Ballater, where residents regard the royal family as neighbors, hundreds of people watched in silence and some threw flowers in front of the hearse as it passed. “She meant such a lot to people in this area. People were crying, it was amazing to see,” said Victoria Pacheco, a guest house manager. In each town and village the cars drove through, they were met with similar muted scenes of respect. People stood mostly in silence; some clapped politely, others pointed their phone cameras at the passing cars. Before reaching the Scottish capital, the cortege is traveling down what is effectively a royal memory lane — passing through locations laden with House of Windsor history including Dyce, where in 1975 the queen formally opened the U.K.’s first North Sea oil pipeline, and Fife near St. Andrews University, where her grandson William, now the Prince of Wales, studied and met his future wife, Catherine. Sunday’s solemn drive through Scotland came as the queen’s eldest son was formally proclaimed the new monarch — King Charles III — in the rest of the nations of the United Kingdom: Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. It came a day after a pomp-filled accession ceremony in England steeped in ancient tradition and political symbolism. “I am deeply aware of this great inheritance and of the duties and heavy responsibilities of sovereignty, which have now passed to me,” Charles said Saturday. Just before the proclamation was read Sunday in Edinburgh, a protester appeared with a sign condemning imperialism and urging leaders to “abolish the monarchy,” getting taken away soon afterward by police. The crowd applauded. One man shouted, “Let her go! It’s free speech!” while others shouted: “Have some respect.” It’s a sign of how some, including the former British Empire colonies, are struggling with the legacy of the monarchy. Earlier, proclamations were read in other parts of the Commonwealth countries, including Australia and New Zealand. Charles, even as he mourned his late mother, was getting to work at Buckingham Palace, meeting with the secretary-general and other representatives of the Commonwealth, nations grappling with affection for the queen and lingering bitterness over their colonial legacies, ranging from slavery to corporal punishment in African schools to looted artifacts […]

Eagles overpowered on the road by Colorado Mines

By: Zach Carattini, CSC Sports Information

The Chadron State College women’s basketball team (5-7,4-3 RMAC) was dropped 87-41 Friday night by Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference foe Colorado School of Mines (11-1, 6-0 RMAC).

The loss on New Year’s Eve extended the Eagles’ losing streak to seven on the road this season. They were outmatched on both sides of the ball in Golden against the nationally ranked Orediggers, whose only loss so far this season came to #10 Nebraska Kearney (10-1, 5-0 MIAA).

The biggest factor in Friday’s loss was poor shooting. The Eagles shot 27.5% from the field (14-51), 16.7% on three-pointers (2-12), and 52.4% on free throws (11-21). In comparison, the Orediggers shot 42.9% on field goals (33-77), 34.8% on three-pointers (8-23), and 65.0% on free throws (13-20).

The score at the end of the first quarter was 12-11 Orediggers. Junior transfer Olyvia Pacheco landed a three-pointer and Ashayla Powers put up back-to-back lay ups to keep the score close heading into the second quarter.

The Orediggers’ offense exploded for 32 points in the second quarter while holding the Eagles to only seven points, which came from two lay ups and three free throws. Mines’ Quincey Baum landed two deep three-pointers while three other Orediggers each landed a trey to extend the lead to 44-18 at the end of the first half.

The Eagles were able to improve their overall scoring in the second half but simply could not keep up with Mines’ heavy attack on offense and defense. Pacheco put away another three-pointer in the third quarter, making her the only Eagle to have a three-pointer in the game. Colorado Mines scored 43 second-half points compared to the Eagles’ 23 points to close the game.

The Eagles will head to Denver on New Year’s Day to take on the Regis Rangers (7-5, 3-3 RMAC), who lost 78-70 to Colorado Mines at the end of November.

Chadron State— Ashayla Powers 9, Olyvia Pacheco 8, Brittni McCully 8, Samiyah Worrell 5, Riley Aiono 5 Jori Peters 2, Micheala Dammann 2, Tatum Peterson 2. Totals: 14-51 (2-12) 11-21, 41 points, 30 rebounds, 13 assists, 20 turnovers.

Colorado Mines— Sammy Van Sickle 18, Ashley Steffeck 13, Josephine Howery 11, Megan Van de Graaf 11, Quincey Baum 9, Denali Pinto 8, Courtney Stanton 8, McKale Grant 4, Liz Holter 3, Shelby Nichols 2. Totals: 33-77 (8-23) 13-20, 87 points, 60 rebounds, 24 assists, 10 turnovers.
