Trump Media executives worried over murky $8m loans, emails reveal | Donald Trump | The Guardian

Top executives at Donald Trump’s social media company started to become concerned last spring about $8m that they had accepted from opaque entities in two emergency loans when its auditors sought further details about the payments, according to documents, emails and sources familiar with the matter.

The payments had come at a critical time for Trump Media – which runs the Truth Social platform – because it was running out of cash after its planned merger with a blank check company known as DWAC that would have unlocked $1.3bn in capital stalled pending an SEC investigation.

But the financing, which came in the form of a $2m loan from an entity called Paxum Bank registered in Dominica in December 2021 and a $6m loan from a entity called ES Family Trust in February 2022, had been arranged in a hurry and Trump Media knew next to nothing about the emergency lenders.

The executives had good reason to be concerned: a subsequent examination revealed that the trustee of ES Family Trust was simultaneously a director of Paxum Bank, and one of the part-owners of the bank would turn out to be the relation of an ally of the Russian president, Vladimir Putin.

And, months after Trump Media came under criminal investigation for the merger by the US attorney’s office for the southern district of New York, federal prosecutors started to examine whether the company violated money-laundering statutes over the payments, the Guardian revealed on Wednesday.

Around that time, Trump Media’s chief financial officer, Phillip Juhan, weighed returning the money because of the opaque nature of its origins, former Trump Media co-founder turned whistleblower Will Wilkerson recounted in an interview.

But the money was ultimately not returned, Wilkerson said, in part because the $8m represented such a large proportion of the roughly $12m in cash that Trump Media had in its accounts that losing those funds could put the company in a precarious financial position.

The question about who knew about the origins of the $8m that ran the risk of having illegitimate origins because of the Russian connection, and what Trump Media did to ensure that kind of money was not entering the United States has become a key issue arising from the episode.

The implications and, more generally, the optics of Trump’s company borrowing money from potentially unsavory sources through opaque conduits are significant considering they could cast a pall over the former president as he seeks to recapture the White House in 2024.

According to documents and emails reviewed by the Guardian and interviews with multiple people familiar with the payments, the knowledge about the $8m being potentially problematic stretched across a number of top executives at Trump Media.

A lawyer for Trump Media declined to comment on the criminal investigation or the $8m financing. A spokesman for the former president’s son, Don Jr, and the justice department declined to comment.

The first $2m loan was sourced by DWAC’s chief executive, Patrick Orlando just days before Christmas 2021 when Trump Media’s financial situation was becoming increasingly acute. Orlando later charged a $240,000 finder’s fee for the loan to Trump Media, according to an invoice billed through his brokerage firm Entoro Securities LLC.

Even at that stage, there was some concern about the origin of the payment given the fact that it was being routed through an offshore bank and Orlando declined to provide any further information about the lender, telling Trump Media associates that the lender was extremely private.

The financing itself also got approval at the Trump family level, when Don Jr, who had become increasingly involved in the Trump Media deal since the summer when he pushed to renegotiate the licensing deal that Trump had with the company for Truth Social, signed off on the loan.

“Just want to keep you in the loop – no guaranty that these will get signed and funded, but we remain hopeful,” John Haley, outside counsel for Trump Media said in a 24 December 2021 email seen by the Guardian, to which Don Jr replied: “Thanks john much appreciated. d.”

The issue then lay dormant for months until it resurfaced on 8 March 2022, when Trump Media’s CFO Juhan flagged the fact that the company had virtually no information about ES Family Trust and that the entity had never signed the promissory note confirming the loan conditions.

“Our auditors require confirmation statements signed by all noteholders. We don’t have a contact for ES Family Trust other than the name of Angel Pacheco (Trustee). Can you provide contact info (email) so that our auditor (BF Borgers) can email this confirmation? Thanks!” Juhan wrote in the email also reviewed by the Guardian.

It remains unclear what further information, or whether a signed version of the loan agreement, was actually passed on to Juhan or to the auditor.

But in the following weeks, Juhan considered whether to return the money because of its potentially questionable origins, Wilkerson recounted. Whether Juhan consulted with the board – which includes Don Jr, Trump ally Kash Patel and former Republican congressman-turned chief executive Devin Nunes – is unclear.

It was also unclear whether Orlando, a licensed SEC broker-dealer, or the auditor BF Borgers completed any due diligence under anti-money laundering and “Know Your Customer” requirements that mandate vetting of investors to combat the proliferation of illicit money.

A person who picked up the phone at BF Borgers this week put a reporter seeking comment on hold until the line disconnected. On a subsequent call, the person said they would pass the request on to managing partner Ben Borgers. Juhan and Orlando did not respond to multiple requests for comment.

But, Wilkerson recounted, the money was not returned. And by the time that his attorneys Patrick Mincey, Stephen Bell and Phil Brewster alerted the US attorney’s office for the southern district of New York to the payments on 23 October 2022, the links to a Putin ally were evident.

Turnips: how Britain fell out of love with the much-maligned vegetable

Environment secretary Thérèse Coffey’s recent suggestion that Britons should turn to turnips following tomato shortages did not go down as she might have hoped.

In trying to revive interest in local produce, Coffey could not have chosen a less glamorous root vegetable. But why do we now look down on the faithful turnip – was it always so unloved?

It’s not clear when turnips were first eaten in Britain, but they didn’t always have a bad reputation. The Old English word neep – a name now only seen in Scotland alongside tatties and haggis – goes back to at least the 10th century, but turnip (“turn-neep”) is only about 500 years old.

Historically, the word “turnip” didn’t only refer to the round purple root, but root vegetables of various shapes, colours and sizes. 16th century botanist John Gerard was particularly keen on “small turneps”, which he said were much sweeter than the large kind and grown in a village called Hackney outside London.

Around the same time, physician Thomas Moffett was eager to write about the blood red turnips he had eaten in Prague, which were so “delicate” that the emperor himself grew them.

Importing new kinds of fruit and vegetables from Europe was all the rage with the early modern rich, who loved to show off their connections and turnips were no exception. Writers of the time weren’t much interested in where their “ordinary” or “garden” turnips came from, but they were still happy to eat them.

Another botanist, John Parkinson, wrote in 1629 that thanks to their sweetness, turnips were: “much esteemed, and often seen as a dish at good men’s tables”. In response to Coffey, chef Thomasina Miers’ suggested caramelising turnips in butter. This is just the sort of sweet dish turnips were once appreciated for.

Early modern authors also praised their medical uses. Turnips were considered nourishing, restorative and generally good for the body – even if they did sometimes cause wind.

From human to animal fodder

So what took the turnip off “good men’s tables”? Historians Frances Dolan and Mark Overton point to animal feed and crop rotations. Turnips have been used to feed animals since antiquity, although Roman naturalist Pliny the Elder stressed that they were just as good for human consumption.

Even as Gerard praised his Hackney turnips, he also noted that “poore people in Wales” were forced to eat them raw in times of hardship. Up to this point, the root could be both the food of the rich and the poor. But from the end of the 17th century, growing winter turnips to feed livestock became more common and systematic crops rotations started to take off, which used turnips as one of the main nutrient providing plants.

Rotting turnips could feed animals and make great compost, but this didn’t exactly endear them to aristocrats. At the same time, new root vegetables were coming in from the Americas, with potatoes and sweet potatoes proving very popular.

Other now obscure but once favoured root vegetables – skirrets and eryngoes – gradually fell out of British diets and parsnips and carrots were used less in sweet dishes partially thanks to the rapid increase in sugar production.

The global food chains that are at the heart of our current salad shortages mean that British consumers no longer need to eat (or individually produce) crops like turnips out of necessity.

It’s not surprising turnips couldn’t quite stand up to the huge changes in agriculture and food choice over the last three centuries. What their history does show, however, is that they have managed to survive despite it all, even if today’s consumers today aren’t really sure what to do with them.

Eduardo Pacheco Herrera: A Journey of Perseverance and Success

Eduardo Pacheco Herrera: A Journey of Perseverance and Success

Introduction:

In the realm of inspiring success stories, one name that stands out is that of Eduardo Pacheco Herrera. Born on May 17th, 1975, in the vibrant city of Buenos Aires, Argentina, Eduardo’s life has been a testament to the power of resilience and hard work. From humble beginnings to becoming a prominent figure in the business world, Eduardo’s journey is an awe-inspiring tale that serves as a beacon of hope for aspiring entrepreneurs and individuals striving to overcome adversity.

Chapter 1: Early Life and Education

Eduardo Pacheco Herrera was raised in a modest household by his parents, Maria and Julio Herrera. Growing up in a working-class neighborhood taught him the values of determination and discipline from an early age. Despite facing financial hardships, Eduardo’s parents instilled in him a strong sense of ambition and emphasized the importance of education.

Eduardo attended public schools in Buenos Aires where he displayed exceptional academic prowess. His teachers recognized his potential early on and encouraged him to pursue higher education. With limited financial resources at his disposal, Eduardo worked tirelessly during his high school years to secure scholarships that would pave the way for his future endeavors.

Chapter 2: The Path to Business Success

After completing high school with flying colors, Eduardo set his sights on studying business administration at Universidad de Buenos Aires (UBA). This decision marked a turning point in his life as it provided him with the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate the complex world of entrepreneurship.

During his time at UBA, Eduardo demonstrated remarkable leadership qualities by actively participating in student organizations and spearheading various initiatives. These experiences not only honed his management skills but also fueled his passion for making a positive impact on society through business ventures.

Chapter 3: The Birth of an Entrepreneur

Upon graduating from UBA with honors, Eduardo wasted no time in putting his entrepreneurial spirit to work. Armed with a vision and a burning desire to succeed, he founded his first startup, a tech company specializing in software development.

The early years of Eduardo’s entrepreneurial journey were far from smooth sailing. He faced numerous setbacks and challenges, including financial constraints and intense competition. However, Eduardo’s unwavering determination and ability to learn from failures propelled him forward.

Chapter 4: Triumph Over Adversity

Eduardo’s breakthrough came when he secured a major contract with a renowned multinational corporation. This deal not only provided the financial stability he had long sought but also served as validation for his business acumen.

Despite this triumph, Eduardo encountered another obstacle that tested his resilience like never before. In 2001, Argentina was hit by a severe economic crisis that sent shockwaves throughout the country. The crisis severely impacted businesses across all sectors, including Eduardo’s own.

However, rather than succumbing to the challenges posed by this crisis, Eduardo made the bold decision to diversify his business portfolio. He expanded into new markets and industries while simultaneously streamlining operations to ensure efficiency and sustainability.

Chapter 5: A Legacy of Philanthropy

As Eduardo achieved greater success in his entrepreneurial endeavors, he remained deeply committed to giving back to society. He established the Pacheco Herrera Foundation—an organization dedicated to providing educational opportunities for underprivileged children.

The foundation has since impacted countless lives through scholarships, mentorship programs, and infrastructure development initiatives in impoverished communities. Eduardo firmly believes that education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty and empowering individuals to create their own success stories.

Chapter 6: Current Endeavors

Today, Eduardo Pacheco Herrera stands as an influential figure in both business and philanthropy circles. His continued success has allowed him to expand his business ventures globally while simultaneously driving social change through various charitable initiatives.

Eduardo remains actively involved in mentoring aspiring entrepreneurs and frequently shares his experiences and insights through speaking engagements and workshops. He firmly believes in the importance of inspiring future generations to dream big, work hard, and persevere against all odds.

Conclusion:

Eduardo Pacheco Herrera’s journey from a humble upbringing to becoming a successful entrepreneur and philanthropist is a testament to the power of perseverance, resilience, and unwavering determination. His story serves as an inspiration for individuals from all walks of life who aspire to overcome adversity and achieve greatness.

Through his business ventures and philanthropic efforts, Eduardo continues to leave an indelible mark on society. His legacy is one that will be remembered for generations to come, reminding us all that with passion, hard work, and a commitment to making a difference, anything is possible.

Diego Pacheco’s Betting Outlook vs Cullen

Pacheco is regarded by many pundits and fans alike as one of the hotter prospects within the sweet science.

He embarks on his in-ring debut in the UK here and the heavy-handed, undefeated fighter looks to impress.

Pacheco’s last four fights all took place last year and he finished every bout inside the distance. Also of note, he’s been sparring with a former two-time super middleweight world champion and one of the pound-for-pound best punchers in the sport, David Benavidez.

Pacheco vs Cullen Recent Fights

Ricardo Adrian Luna, win via TKO Fight 1 Vladimir Belujsky, win via Points
Enrique Collazo, win via TKO Fight 2 Kevin Lele Sadjo, loss via TKO
Raul Ortega, win via RTD Fight 3 Avni Yildirim, win via UD
Genc Pllana, win via KO Fight 4 John Docherty, win via UD

Pacheco readies to take on the biggest test of his run so far as a professional pugilist.

Jack Cullen’s Betting Outlook vs Pacheco

Cullen is a former IBF International super middleweight world champion. He now looks to collect another 168-pound belt at that tier under another promotional banner.

‘Little Lever’s Meat Cleaver’ is also a former English middleweight champion and is pursuant of even more gold in the coming days. He will be the partisan favorite this time out and looks to achieve back-to-back wins this weekend.

Each combatant has certain distinct advantages with Cullen being marginally more experienced at a bit of a higher level.

Conversely, Pacheco has a very notable finishing rate at 82%  and he also has the athletic edge provided by his youth as he is 21 years old.

Pacheco vs Cullen Tale of the Tape

Diego Pacheco vs Jack Cullen Prediction

This prizefight is slated for ten rounds and I do not see the ringside judges playing a role in the verdict for this title fight.

Considering Pacheco’s irrefutable knockout power and the fact that all three of Cullen’s pro losses have seen him finished inside the distance, I think that’s a safe bet.

I foresee value in pursuing prop bets on this fight ending inside the distance (+360) and Pacheco winning via KO or TKO (-550) for prospective bettors. Also, Pacheco winning between rounds 5-6 (+330) presents strong value in my estimation.

Results from Paris and Liverpool: Yoka Loses Again; Pacheco KOs Cullen

Apart from the continuous insults that have been launched for a long time, David Benavidez and Caleb Plant have the same objective: to come out on top and earn a date with Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez.

Benavidez (26-0, 23 KOs) and Plant (22-1, 13 KOs) will clash on March 25th at the Grand Garden Arena at the MGM in Las Vegas. This battle for the WBC interim belt will award the victor with the opportunity to face Canelo, the undisputed 168-pound champion who is expected to return to the ring in May against John Ryder.

At the age of 26, born in Phoenix, Arizona and the son of a Mexican father and an Ecuadorian mother, Benavidez has six consecutive victories within the limit; the most recent against Canadian David Lemieux (43-5, 36 KOs) on May 21st at the Gila River Arena in Glendale, Arizona, where Benavidez claimed the WBC Interim title.

A few weeks before the duel against Plant, which will be broadcast via PPV on Showtime, Benavidez insisted that he has little time left in the super middleweight division and then he will move up a division as he continues his career.

“The reason why I stayed for so long is because I wanted to make this fight happen for sure,” said Benavidez.  “And then since I’m already there, I might as well try to make these other big fights happen. We got Canelo, we got (David) Morrell, (Jermall) Charlo, or maybe Boo Boo Andrade and then after that, I’m going up to 175. If I can’t get any of those fights made then I’m going to 175.”

In various encounters with the media, Benavidez has stated that this fight has been negotiated for the last five years and he has no doubt that now that it is finalized, he will chloroform Plant before the sixth round.

Likewise, the former two-time WBC super middleweight world champion has insisted over and over again that he has all the attributes to beat Canelo, whom he surpasses in reach and height. “Canelo Alvarez has great power, but with my power, reach and jab, I can hurt Canelo at any time,” said Benavidez.

Benavidez, who concluded his amateur career with 15 wins without setbacks, became the youngest world champion in the super middleweight division, defeating Romanian Ronald Gavril by split decision on September 8, 2017, in Las Vegas. That night he was three months and nine days away from his 21st birthday.

Almost a year later he received a six-month ban and was declared a “recessed champion” after testing positive for a cocaine compound during a surprise doping test.

Referring to the fight against Plant, Benavidez told a group of reporters that during his 10-year professional career, “I’ve had bad things and good things happen to me. Everything has happened to me for a reason. I’m going to be the best David Benavidez on March 25. This is going to be the fight of the year and knockout of the year.”

Plant, a former IBF champion (he lost the belt to Canelo by technical knockout in the eleventh round in November 2021), has also thrown inflammatory words at Benavidez on multiple occasions, either in direct interviews or press conferences, both face-to-face and virtual.

“I don’t know what his deal is, but I think he’s nervous, and he feels he’s got a real fight on his hands. He’s never had a fight like this before, and he better come right,” said Plant.

On October 15, Plant knocked out American Anthony Dirrell (34-3-2, 25 KOs) in the ninth round at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Coincidentally, Benavidez also anesthetized Dirrell in the same round three years earlier at the Staples Center in Los Angeles where he regained the WBC 168-pound title.

Plant, who is placed at the top of the WBC and WBA rankings, second in the WBO and third in the IBF, commented, “He’s supposed to say he’s going to knock me out. The only thing is, he should be able to say that. He shouldn’t have to read from his phone to say that. So, I don’t know if his daddy wrote a speech for him or what.”

Plant continued, “All the things he’s saying and all the things he’s doing, it’s either for the cameras, or his daddy told him to say that because that’s who runs the show over there. His daddy runs the show. “His dad tells him what to say, his dad tells him when to be quiet, his dad tells him what to do. His dad tells him what to do over here. On my team, I’m running the show. Again, he sounded real nervous up there just stuttering a bunch, but come fight night, he had better not be stuttering.”

For Plant, a victory against Benavidez will have special meaning, because it will offer him an opportunity for direct revenge against Canelo, who defeated him in the eleventh round on November 6, 2021, at the MGM.

Recently Benavidez Sr. shared his thoughts on the fact that he no longer considers Canelo an elite fighter. “I consider (Alvarez), with all due respect, done as a fighter. He is worn out. First, we saw him with a knee injury, and now he injured (and eventually got surgery on) his (left) hand.”

Benavidez Sr. continued, “Canelo has given everything he could against elite opposition. Now he only has to look for fighters like John Ryder or Edgar Berlanga. He is no longer at the level to challenge elite rivals. I have bad news for everybody – there will not be a fight between David Benavidez and Canelo. Forget about that fight, we have other horizons. We have a contract for three fights with David Morrell, Jermall Charlo, and Demetrius Andrade. Those are very good fights – names that Canelo Alvarez didn’t want to fight. So, we are going to fight with them to show who we are.”

Heavyweights Jarrell “Big Baby” Miller and Lucas “Big Daddy” Browne collide next Saturday, March 18, in Dubai. Miller hails from Long Island, New York, Browne from Perth, Australia, the promoter is Russian, and the host country is the United Arab Emirates. Heightening the multinational twang, an Irishman (Jono Carroll) and a Colombian (Miguel Marriaga) will rumble in the chief supporting bout.

In some ways, his venture into traditional boxing with the Miller-Browne fight is his most shameless promotion yet. But having said that, it’s a fascinating match between two heavy-handed behemoths who are charismatic in their own way.

Miller, who made his mark as a kickboxer before transitioning into boxing, first tested positive in 2014 in California after a kickboxing event. Five years later, he was cleaved from his match with Anthony Joshua for PED infractions, blowing a purported $5 million payday and the opportunity to win the world heavyweight title. The assignment then went to Andy Ruiz who sprung one of the biggest upsets in heavyweight title annals.

But then, 13 months later, he flunked yet another drug test, scuppering his scheduled match with Jerry Forrest at the MGM Bubble. Now a pariah in the eyes of the sport’s two most powerful promoters – Eddie Hearn and Bob Arum – he was, in effect, exiled to Siberia. 43 months would elapse before he returned to the ring.

One month later, in his most recent fight, Miller opposed Tijuana’s Derek Cardenas at an Embassy Suites hotel in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Cardenas, who was 8-9 heading in and had been stopped seven times, folded his tent in the fourth round.

And that brings us to Saturday, March 18, when these two “bigs” will do battle in Dubai (assuming the match doesn’t fall apart, which would be no great surprise). By all accounts, Big Baby Miller, the younger man by nine years, should win every minute of every round for as long as it lasts, but yet it’s hard to bet against the Aussie who has shown a knack for unholstering his haymaker and turning the tide with one big punch.
