How To Make Sleep A Priority

How To Make Sleep A Priority

Sleep has been difficult for me most of my life. It is hard for me to fall asleep and harder to stay asleep.

Growing up on a farm, I got up at 5 am to milk the cows. When I went to college, I continued to get up at 5 am. I’d have breakfast then go the library to study or to the studio to paint. I thought sleeping 4 to 6 hours a night was optimal. I had a lot to do, and I preferred to study or paint rather than sleep.

When I was in medical school and residency, there was even more to do. I had overnight call every third night, sometimes every other night. Private practice was a little better, but I still had trouble falling asleep. I’d awaken at 2 am and be wide awake, unable to fall back to sleep. I’d get up and read.

When I had children, there was even more to do. Getting by with only 4 to 6 hours of sleep seemed like a blessing. Little did I understand that sleep deprivation was accelerating the damage to my brain.

Once I was in a wheelchair, I started reading papers about neurodegeneration. That is how I slowly pieced together how important mitochondria are in the development of disability. Part of me is incredibly grateful that I have had trouble sleeping most of my life. However, I now know that sleeping only 4-6 hours each night was a huge strain on my brain.

Sleep is when many important processes that are essential to our health occur. Sleep is when we make hormones and remove toxins from our blood and our brain. Sleep is when we consolidate memories.

Once I understood how vital sleep is to my brain and my health, I prioritized getting more sleep. I started paying attention to what was associated with better sleep and what was associated with poor sleep. I got a sleep tracker to monitor how many hours I was spending in deep sleep and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, which is when we dream. I tweaked my routines and my sleep improved. I now get 7 to 8 hours of sleep each night.

Sleep disruptions are very common in the setting of multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s, and other neurodegenerative diseases. Sleep disruption is also common in anxiety, depression, and other psychiatric diseases. Often sleep disruption occurs years prior to the neurological and/or psychiatric disorder. Because sleep is so critical to brain health, I am not surprised that poor sleep is also associated with more aggressive disease and shorter time to job loss and disability accumulation.

Sleep is regulated in part by the hormone melatonin, which is secreted by the pineal gland in the brain in response to darkness.1,2 The production of melatonin gradually declines over the age of 40, and is markedly reduced after 60.3 Melatonin has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and neuroprotective properties.1,2,4 However, melatonin production is often reduced in neuroinflammatory and neurodegenerative disorders, which means people with multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s, and Alzheimer’s are more likely to have sleep problems, caused in part by inadequate melatonin in the brain.5

In the setting of multiple sclerosis, adding melatonin improved sleep quality6 and was associated with reduction of inflammatory cytokines TNF alpha and interleukin 1 beta.7,8 Taking 6 mg of melatonin in the evening was associated with improved balance and waking function and reduced fall risk in the setting of multiple sclerosis.9

In a meta-analysis, adding melatonin significantly improved sleep quality in the setting of Parkinson’s,10 dementia, cognitive impairment,11 mental health problems,12 metabolic syndrome,13 respiratory disorders,13and cancer.14

My approach to improving sleep for my patients and myself is the following:

  • Get outside in the morning, preferably within 2 hours of sunrise. Even 2 to 5 minutes of looking at the sky will be helpful.
  • Have a consistent ritual for winding down 1-2 hours before going to bed.
  • Use red or amber lights after the sun sets.
  • Use an app to shift the display on your phone and computer to reduce the blue light (which will suppress melatonin production).
  • Add a meditation or mindfulness practice at bedtime, which can be as simple as belly breathing and focusing on the words “in” and “out.”
  • Shift your workouts earlier in the day.

Sleep is key to our health. And as we age our melatonin levels fall, deteriorating our sleep. Most people over 40 with sleep issues will benefit from adding melatonin to their sleep routine.

Election Day 2024 Is Just One Year Away

It feels like the Los Angeles elections just ended and new Mayor Karen Bass and the rest of the political class of 2022 are still in the honeymoon stage in their roles leading and running the city.

But it’s time to get ready for the next round of elections, as voting takes place one year from Sunday.

On March 5, 2024, Californians will hit the polls for the state primary (mail-in ballots will go out before that). While picking a replacement for U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein is the big draw, nearly half of the residents of Los Angeles will vote for a City Council member. Seven of the 15 Council posts (those in even-numbered districts) are up for grabs. Any runoffs would be decided during the November general election.

It’s hard to overstate how important these jobs are: Each politician represents about 260,000 constituents and holds tremendous sway over things such as development and homelessness policy in their territory.

While yet another election prompts a sense of voter fatigue, the ballot is shaping up to be a humdinger (the 1940s can have their word back now). Here is an early look at the 2024 L.A. City Council races.

District 2

Council President Paul Krekorian is termed out, opening this San Fernando Valley seat that includes the neighborhoods of North Hollywood, Studio City and Toluca Lake. Former State Assemblyman Adrin Nazarian is employing a familiar strategy: Try to scare off competitors by raising a boatload of money early—he pumped $176,000 into his campaign war chest by the reporting period of Dec. 31, according to City Ethics Commission filings. That’s almost 16 times the $11,360 raised by Jillian Burgos, who advocates for things like expanding the size of the Council. A third person who filed papers to raise money, Manuel Gonez, has yet to report raising any cash.

Numerous city lawmakers have previously served in state office, but Sacramento experience is no guarantee of victory. Expect the field of candidates to grow.

District 4

Nithya Raman became the first person in Los Angeles in almost two decades to beat an incumbent, when she knocked off David Ryu. Bizarrely, the progressive pol’s next run may be even more difficult—that’s because her territory was chopped up in the now infamous city redistricting process. About 60 percent of District 4 is new and sprawls far—the Fourth includes everything from parts of Silver Lake and Los Feliz to Encino and Reseda.

Raman won by igniting progressives and activating an army of volunteers, and she now chairs the Council’s important Housing Committee. She should not have difficulty raising money, but she may see a challenge from Ethan Weaver, a neighborhood prosecutor in the City Attorney’s office, who in the first sentence of his first email to voters harps on homelessness and “crumbling infrastructure.” Former Councilmember Mitch O’Farrell is listed as one of the hosts for a Weaver fundraiser this month.

Again, expect the field to grow.

One of the most contested races on the ballot will be for the seat formerly by the disgraced Nury Martinez(Irfan Khan / LA Times)

District 6

Call this the oddest election on the local ballot. The Valley seat covering Pacoima, Panorama City, and parts of Van Nuys was formerly represented by Nury Martinez, who immolated in October after the racist recording of a secret meeting she attended became public. A special election to fill the seat takes place April 4, though a new rep likely won’t be seated until after a June 27 runoff.

This means the incumbent will immediately be thrust back into campaign mode—good luck learning how to do an incredibly difficult job when you need to fundraise and ensure your next win. The bumpy times in the Valley will continue.

 District 8

Perhaps the only slam dunk on the local ballot will be for this South Los Angeles seat. Marqueece Harris-Dawson first won the post in 2015 and chairs the Council’s influential Planning and Land Use Management Committee. He ran unopposed in 2020 and is considered a potential successor to Krekorian as Council president.

The 2022 election cycle taught L.A. that no Council seat is ever 100 percent safe, but Harris-Dawson appeals to a progressive crowd that is powering change in other districts. Expect him to coast.

District 10

The contest for the territory that includes West Adams, Mid-City and Koreatown is gonna be a doozy. Heather Hutt represents the district, but she wasn’t elected—Nury Martinez engineered her appointment to the post after Mark Ridley-Thomas was suspended following his indictment by federal authorities. So we have no clue what level of support Hutt has in the community, or how adept she is at fundraising and campaigning.

She’ll have to battle State Assemblyman Reggie Jones-Sawyer, a veteran of numerous elections who will seek to woo progressive voters. Also in the mix are two people who lost to Ridley-Thomas in 2020: Grace Yoo (who made the runoff) and Channing Martinez (felled in the primary).

District 12

John Lee is the incumbent, but his win in 2020 was a squeaker, with just 50.6 percent of the vote. He, too, is going for big cash early—he raised $143,000 by the end of 2022.

The district that includes Porter Ranch, Chatsworth and Granada Hills is L.A.’s most Republican-friendly territory, but progressive candidate Loraine Lundquist kept it close four years ago. The only person registered to run against Lee is Michael Benedetto, whose splash photo on his website shows him in front of the Air Force 1 display in the Reagan Presidential Library. So assume he’s not angling for the lefty crowd.

District 14

If any contest will juice L.A. Twitter, this is it. The seat is held by Kevin de León, who crushed four challengers in 2020 and then finished third in a run for mayor. He was on the leaked tape where Martinez spewed her bile, and many remain angry over some of his comments, and that he didn’t confront Martinez at the time.

Right now there is an air of uncertainty around the race. An effort to force a recall election is underway, and de León has yet to file papers to raise money for the 2024 contest. If he runs, he may be more formidable than some think—activists want his resignation, but the vote depends on inhabitants of Boyle Heights, Downtown, Eagle Rock and some other Northeast L.A. neighborhoods. This includes many people who previously supported him, some multiple times.

Already registered to raise money are Nick Pacheco, who served on the City Council two decades ago, and attorney Ysabel Jurado. Once again, expect the field to grow, and the rhetoric to be nasty.

May I have a word: Secret codes that stump dogs and people alike – The Boston Globe

Stephen Mulloney, of West Roxbury, wrote: “Over the years we have had a number of papillons as pets — adorable, super-intelligent, energetic dogs. To temper their enthusiasm when any pap-involved activity is discussed, my wife and I started referring to them as certain individuals, as in, ‘Is it time for certain individuals to take their evening meal?’ They have cracked all the codes for walks, car trips, etc., and they can spell T-R-E-A-T-S. But one phrase they have never been able to get is certain individuals, and so that has become the established code in our house for the dogs.”

Of course, humans use code for non-dog-related purposes too.

Mary Miller, of Juneau, Alaska, told me: “Most of my siblings are very conservative, while my nieces and nephews and I are very liberal. A few years ago, we held a family reunion in Wisconsin. The liberal side of the family came up with the code phrase ‘Have you seen any sandhill cranes?’ as a way to change the subject or get someone out of trouble. It worked very well — and it was amazing how so many people were interested in sandhill cranes.”

Laura B. Roberts, of Cambridge, wrote: “When my brother wanted to change the topic of conversation, he’d say, ‘I hear the World Series starts tomorrow’” — which no doubt struck people as strange on about 364 days of the year.

Susan Tornheim, of Newton Highlands, reported: “In our family, groundhog signifies that the person it’s directed to has food on their face.”

Joe Peters told me: “My wife, Jan, and I use the phrase ‘So what do you think?’ It works for leaving the party, or if we’re at home — well, I’ll leave that to your imagination!”

And John Pacheco, of Gardner and Washington, D.C., reported: “My 14-year-old son, John, went to Panama alone to stay with the family of a friend from college. We knew we would be worried about his safety, so if he were in danger, his code on a telephone call with us was to be ‘They don’t serve quahogs here.’”

I like that! Not only does quahogs introduce a local angle, but the sentence strikes me as all-purpose: It could serve the rest of us as code for almost anything. I’m awarding John bragging rights this time — and I’m adding ”They don’t serve quahogs here” to my lexicon as soon as I can think of my own use for it. Thank you, John!

On to the next challenge. This time, I found myself thinking ahead to St. Patrick’s Day, which got me thinking about limericks. The limerick, the Irish Times states confidently, is “the most popular poem in the world’s most important language, English.”

The paper is less confident about how, why, and when the limerick got its name. It may have derived from the activities of the Irish Brigade in 18th-century France; from the 18th-century Maigue Poets in County Limerick, Ireland; or from the chorus “Will you come up to Limerick?” which, the Oxford English Dictionary reports, was once sung between improvised verses at “convivial parties.”

In any case, the poetic form itself long predates the name. It even turns up in “Othello,” by Shakespeare. Who was, of course, not Irish.

So while a limerick whose beginning I wrote for you is set in Scotland (like “Macbeth”!), please don’t think this location inapposite. I wanted to give you something easy to work with, and an awful lot of rhyming words end in -oon.

My unfinished limerick goes like this:

They stumbled upon Brigadoon

On a beautiful spring afternoon.

Please write the final three lines and send them to me by noon on Friday, March 17, at [email protected], and kindly include where you live.

Personalities & Lifestyle: Finding the Right Trading Style for You – The Birb Nest

Trading is becoming increasingly popular nowadays. However, when starting out, you need to define which approach you will take to enter the financial markets. Trading is so versatile that it’s not about adapting to the markets, but rather finding the right trading style that will match your personality and lifestyle. Each trading style has its own unique approach, risk tolerance, and strategy.

What is a Trading Style?

A trading style is defined by the way you trade the markets. How often you look at charts, how many positions you take, and how long you’ll hold them are all factors that contribute to your trading style. In this blog post, we will dive into the most common trading styles and their characteristics.

The four main trading styles are position trading, swing trading, day trading, and scalping.

Position Trading

If you’re just starting your trading journey, position trading is not a common style. This type of trading requires you to learn about both technical and fundamental analysis, which requires economic and financial understanding.

In terms of personality and lifestyle, position trading won’t require much of your time looking at charts. Position traders often check their positions once a week, which allows for a more relaxed lifestyle and the ability to dedicate more time to other jobs, family, travel, or your own startup.

Swing Trading

Swing trading is a popular trading style. If you’re just starting out in trading, I recommend that you begin with swing trading. This approach will help you develop the patience required to analyze medium and high timeframes, which have less noise and can help you understand the main dynamics of price action. You’ll need to learn fundamental analysis, but since you won’t be exposed to the market as much as position traders, your decision-making process won’t be as influenced by fundamentals.

In terms of personality and lifestyle, swing trading requires you to look at charts at least once per day. This is a relaxed approach to the markets since you’re trading medium timeframes that allow flexibility between trading sessions. You can use the rest of your time to learn new skills, spend time with your family, work a normal job, or pursue hobbies.

Day Trading

This trading style is commonly referred to as intra-week trading. It can be a good option for beginners since it allows them to avoid lower timeframes that often have more noise and can be confusing. While it requires less fundamental and macroeconomic understanding, it’s important to stay aware of news events throughout the week.

Here are some key points:

In terms of personality and lifestyle, day trading requires constant monitoring during the most important trading sessions (London, New York, and Tokyo). This means that you need to be available to look at charts throughout the day to manage your trading positions. If you’re day trading, you’ll likely spend most of your time trading and doing research.

Scalping is considered the most difficult trading style. It requires total focus on the markets on a daily basis, and there is a lot of noise on lower timeframes. This trading style is only recommended for experienced traders, as trading on lower timeframes and taking multiple trade setups throughout the day requires top-notch risk management tools and a psychological approach.

Here are some key points to keep in mind when scalping:

Scalping requires good time management skills, as scalpers usually only trade for several hours during the main trading sessions. Since they close their positions at the end of the day, they don’t have to look at the market until the next day. It is important to manage yourself well under pressure and work on your psychological balance on a daily basis.

It’s extremely important for you to define your trading style based on your lifestyle and personality. By doing this, you’ll be closer to being profitable in the long run and you’ll enjoy trading much more.
