Diego Pacheco looks to stop Jack Cullen & be recognized as contender

Undefeated Diego Pacheco faces Jack Cullen in the main event at M&S Bank Arena in Liverpool, England on Saturday, March 11. The pair squares off in the scheduled for ten rounds bout with the vacant WBO International super middleweight title on the line. The event airs live stream on DAZN (excluding Australia and New Zealand).

Pacheco (17-0, 14 KOs) won six of his previous bouts prior to the final bell. In his most recent outing last December he stopped Ricardo Adrian Luna in the second round.

Los Angeles-born fighter, who just turned 22, makes his UK debut. Ahead of his bout against Little Lever’s 29-year-old representative of the country-host, he said he was looking to stop his Cullen (21-3-1, 9 KOs) and start being recognized as a contender.

“Jack Cullen I feel is a good opponent, finally someone that the fans know I guess,” said Pacheco. “If I beat him then it’s going to be like, ‘he beat this guy’, and I hope people are going to start believing in me a little bit more.

“After I get this win, I do feel that people will start recognizing me more as a contender than a prospect. He’s tall and he has a lot of heart, but I’m a way better fighter than him. I see myself stopping him. He won’t be able to take my power. Once I see the opening, I’ll take it.

“I think this fight is really important for my career. It’s really important that I put on a good performance. I wanna knock him out, I wanna stop him. In whatever round it comes in, whether it’s a body shot or a head shot, I just wanna to stop him.”

Pacheco trains in Seattle, Washington alongside two-time world champion David Benavidez under the guidance of Jose Benavidez Sr. Benavidez prepares to face Caleb Plant for the interim WBC title on March 25.

“I’ve been part of David Benavidez’ last five fights. Every camp here is really tough. It’s good work, it doesn’t get better than this. The first time I ever came down here, David reached out to me on the DMs. It was after my Saudi Arabia fight. He was like, ‘oh I was watching that, you’re really good, do you wanna come down and work with me?’. I was like ‘hell yeah’.

“That’s what has gotten me the great wins, the great knockouts – the preparation I’ve been doing. That’s the reason I’m here working with them. There are other great sparring partners in here as well and I’m preparing better than ever for this fight. The sparring doesn’t get better than this so I’m really thankful for that.

“Obviously it is really tough, David Benavidez is a really good fighter. Every time I’m in there with him I learn something new. He pushes me more than anyone else. That’s exactly what I need.”

In the co-main event, Liverpool’s Robbie Davies Jr (23-3, 15 KOs) and Kent, UK-born Darragh Foley (21-4-1, 9 KOs), residing in Bondi, Australia square off in the ten-rounder at super lightweight. Also on the card, UK’s Johnny Fisher (7-0, 6 KOs) meets Italy’s Alfonso Damiani (6-2, 2 KOs) in an eight-rounder at heavyweight.

In Australia, the event airs live on Sunday, March 12.

Yankees announce coaching assignments for 2023 Florida Complex League Yankees – Pinstriped Prospects

Earlier this weekend, the Yankees internally announced the coaching assignments for the 2023 Rookie-level Florida Complex League (FCL) Yankees, and they are as follows:

Manager: James Cooper
Pitching Coach: Brett DeGagne & Spencer Medick
Hitting Coach: Ryan Chipka & Tom DeAngelis
Defensive Coach: Santiago Nessy & Antonio Pacheco
Athletic Trainer: Jordan Gosztola & Adaric Kelly
Strength Coach: James Gonzalez & Kevin Hollabaugh

There are a few notable changes here, with the most obvious being the manager replacement which was vacated with Sergio Santos assuming the same role in High-A Hudson Valley.

James Cooper was previously a defense and base-running coach with the FCL Yankees last season, and this will be his second season with the Yankees. He also was recently an assistant coach for the USA U-18 Baseball World Cup team, where they won gold this past December.

Brett DeGagne will be going into his third season with the Yankees, and second with the FCL squad. DeGagne was originally hired by the Yankees for the 2020 season away from North Iowa Area Community College, but began his term in 2021 with the Single-A Tampa Tarpons

Also in his second season in pinstripes is Spencer Medick, who was brought over by the Yankees from noted training facility Driveline. Medick previously held the pitching coach role with High-A Hudson Valley, which is now occupied by Grayson Crawford.

Ryan Chipka was brought on by the Yankees in 2020 as hitting coach for the now defunct Staten Island Yankees, and has held that role with the FCL Yankees since the 2021 season. Chipka was previously the Director of Program Development at the University of Michigan.

Tom DeAngelis was hired in November of 2022 by the Yankees from Baldwin Wallace University, a D-III school in a suburb of Cleveland, Ohio, where he was the assistant head baseball coach for over 8 years.

Santiago Nessy, a former catcher for the 2016 High-A Tampa Yankees, will become one of the new defensive coaches along with Antonio Pacheco with the departure of Brandon Oliver.

The FCL Yankees’ championship defending season is expected to begin some time in June.

‘Hysteria’: Is the Panic Over Balloons Getting Out of Hand?

U.S. fighter jets have shot down three unidentified flying objects since Friday, amid allegations from the Biden administration that China is deploying spy balloons as part of a vast aerial surveillance program.

The spectacle has drawn attention to the potential use of the humble device for spying, but some scientists have expressed concern the episode could give balloons a bad rep and undermine research.

“Obviously a balloon on covert mission will not pop-up in the iPhone app of Flightradar24, but it could be more or less traced as any other flying object using radars and so on. There is no ‘invisibility’ here,” said Luis E. Pacheco, editor of StratoCat, an Argentina-based database that documents use of the device.

“There are some worries in the community about the consequences of the hysteria around this issue and how it will affect scientific and amateur balloon programs,” he told VICE World News.

U.S. officials have attributed the repeated shootdowns to “heightened alert” following the recent incursion of an alleged Chinese spy balloon into U.S. territory. The device was brought down on Feb. 4 by a Sidewinder missile fired by an F-22 fighter jet.

The sighting and downing of the aerial vehicle has prompted global balloon mania, with sightings in Europe, South America, and across Asia.

In response, the Chinese government, which has insisted the white balloon spotted over Montana was just a weather research device blown off course, on Monday accused the U.S. of illegally flying balloons into the country’s airspace “more than ten times” since last year.

“It is the U.S. who has been abusing its technological strength and engaged in massive, indiscriminate wiretapping and secret theft globally,” Wang Wenbin, a foreign ministry spokesperson, said in a press briefing. The U.S. has denied flying surveillance balloons over China.

Some countries, including Costa Rica and Canada, have reported sightings of similar balloons and moved to destroy them, but some of the devices may have nothing to do with espionage.

For example, an aerial object detected over Yukon in northwest Canada on Saturday was shot down at the request of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, but some scientists say it might be a pico balloon flown by civilians.

Danny Bowman, a scientist at the Sandia National Laboratories, who uses high-altitude balloons to study atmospheric science, urged balloonists to clearly label their payload boxes and coordinate with the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration before any flight.

As the balloon craze takes on a life of its own in some conspiratorial-minded circles, some governments have taken a more measured tone on the flying objects.

On Tuesday, Taiwan’s military said it has not detected any surveillance balloons in the self-ruled island’s vicinity, contrary to recent news reports that claimed Chinese military balloons frequently made incursions into airspace of the island democracy, which Beijing claims as its own territory.

“The majority of the balloons near our waters were used for meteorological purposes,” Major General Huang Wen-chi, a Taiwan military intelligence officer, said in a press briefing, adding that they didn’t pose a security threat.

Pacheco stressed how important it is not to let this episode and the risks of balloons being used in espionage overshadow their potential in research and education.

“Balloons are platforms used for multiple purposes—as a knife that can cut your food or your throat—all depending on intention,” he said.
