Nineteen Take Oath of Allegiance at Annual Naturalization Ceremony at Stockton – Shore Local Newsmagazine

Galloway, N.J. – They came from Colombia, Ghana, India, Poland and Peru years ago to start a new life in America,

On Friday, May 6, 19 natives of 11 countries officially became Americans, taking the Oath of Allegiance in a naturalization ceremony at the Campus Center at Stockton University.

The Stockton Center for Community Engagement and Service-Learning (SCCESL) hosts the annual ceremony and also sponsors naturalization classes at the Stockton Atlantic City campus from 6-7 p.m. on Tuesdays from September through May.

“Offering naturalization classes and hosting the naturalization ceremony speaks to the vision of our center, which is to promote the ideals of public service and social responsibility, and serve the public good,” said Dr. Merydawilda Colón, executive director of the SCCESL.

Stockton Provost Leamor Kahanov welcomed the group saying we value the unique perspectives they bring to America.

Keith Dorr from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services office in Mt. Laurel administered the oath and said it was a day to celebrate.

“You are not just good people, you are extraordinary people,” Dorr said.

Two of the new citizens are also students at Stockton, Ramon Eduardo Croce, and Nand Patel.

Patel, a Galloway resident, is also a member of the New Jersey Air National Guard 177th Fighter Wing. He said came from India with his family when he was 14, graduated from Absegami High School in 2017, then enlisted in the Air Force.

“I liked what I was doing,” he said of his work in supply chain management. Now a Business Studies major at Stockton, he would like to go to officer’s training school and getting his citizenship was one step toward achieving that goal.

Karen Chilito of Galloway, who is originally from Colombia, attended with her two children and remembered coming to America when she was a child.

I have been here since 1994 and decided it was time to become a citizen,” Chilito said. “I can’t wait to get an American passport, and vote, and have my voice heard.”

All of the new citizens were encouraged to register to vote.

Ya-Mei Chen, director of the USCIS office inf Mt. Laurel, recalled her own arrival in America from Taiwan, carrying two suitcases and a rice cooker.  She said he had studied English, but using it in regular conversation was challenging at first.

“If your first language is not English, it is such a challenge,” Chen said. “But we made it work. Continue to do what you are doing.”

She encouraged the new citizens to continue to celebrate their culture and heritage with their children, friends and neighbors.

“Be a bridge between cultures,” she said. “It’s important to fit in, but also to stand out. Be yourself.”

Members of two chapters of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Greenwich Tea Burning Chapter from Cumberland County and the General Lafayette Chapter from Somers Point, presented gift bags to the new citizens.

The new U.S. citizens are: Rossana Margo Munoz Alcedo, Tomasz Rzotkiewicz, Iwona Rzotkiewicz, Tracy Alexcia Schechter, Elisa DeJesus Cabral Suarez, Bernard Essah Bediako, Viridiana Nava Juarez, Maria Del Carmen Bisono Tejada, Maricela Velazquez Pacheco, Monik Cohen, Karen Astrid Chilito, Nand Patel, Nilkanthbhai Ashokbhai Parekh, Monica Rocio Balbuena, Richard Ofori Amoakohene, Eddy Castillo, Kristina Stojanovska, Fatama Begum and Ramon Eduardo Croce.

This year’s naturalization classes are facilitated by SCCESL Student Fellows Ariana Ramirez and Ivett Carrasco, with Master of Social Work interns Maria Castaneda and Desiree Robinson.

The White House’s Concealed Albums – SteveMayone

Just one of the benefits of being Jimmy Carter’s grandson is that you get to go to the family’s yearly journey, a collecting for the entire prolonged Carter clan that’s structured by the former President and 1st Girl. John Chuldenko—whose stepfather is Carter’s son Jack—loves to show up at these functions, which may well involve fishing in the Gulf of Mexico or lounging on a seaside in Panama. Considerably of the time is handed just hanging out, chatting, exchanging outdated tales.

It was during one these sojourn that Chuldenko initially read about the history assortment. His uncle Jeff was speaking about an incident that happened through a White Dwelling social gathering again in the course of the Carter administration. Jeff—Jimmy Carter’s youngest son, who was in his twenties at the time—was hanging out upstairs in the residence with some pals, blasting a Rolling Stones album. Out of the blue, the doorway flew open and there stood Rosalynn Carter and 2nd Lady Joan Mondale, who reacted to the tunes with—

“Wait, what do you imply there have been data there?” Chuldenko wanted to know. “Where did you get data?”

Jeff stated that an official range of LPs was retained in the home. “So I’m like, ‘The White Property has its very own report selection?’ ” Chuldenko remembers. “ ‘Like, permanently?’ ” Jeff claimed he didn’t know nearly anything more about it, and the conversation moved on. But when Chuldenko returned house to Los Angeles, he could not allow it go. “That begun me down this rabbit gap,” he says.

Chuldenko is a resourceful guy with his hands in a great deal of projects—a writer, director, and producer who will work on anything from commercials to journal content articles to characteristic films. He’s also a huge collector of vinyl. So when he read about the doable existence of an formal White House file library, he bought enthusiastic. Possibly this could be a documentary movie, he thought. But mainly, he was just eager to know much more. He located a number of temporary articles about the selection on-line or else, details was sparse. Did the White House ever seriously have these kinds of a detail? Which albums ended up in it? And was it continue to there?

So Chuldenko did what any very good researcher would and contacted the library. Other than in this case—another perk of being an ex-President’s grandson—the establishment he attained out to was the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library. An archivist there passed alongside details for somebody in the White Home curator’s business office. Chuldenko sent off an email and before long bought back again an unpromising reply. “Basically the response was ‘Yeah, I really don’t genuinely know what you are chatting about, but we’ll do some digging.’ ”

Chuldenko figured that may well be the final he heard from them, but inevitably he gained a different e-mail:

“Dear John: Of course, we do have a record selection stored at a protected offsite facility. Due to the fact it is protected, I can’t pass alongside the precise place of in which the documents are getting stored.”

That was it. “I will have to have read it seven periods,” Chuldenko says. “I necessarily mean, at that stage, all they experienced said was ‘We have it.’ It’s not ‘Hey, come see it.’ It was just: ‘It exists.’ ”

In a way, there are in fact two White Residence album collections. The initially was assembled in the early ’70s by the Recording Industry Association of The us, the DC trade team that signifies file businesses. The American Booksellers Association had donated tomes for a White Household guide library, the considering went, so why not a identical collection of new music?

The White Dwelling was receptive, and the RIAA place alongside one another a crew to pick music from the worlds of classical, jazz, well-liked songs, and so forth. Johnny Mercer was tapped to oversee the pop picks. In retrospect, this was an odd choice. The thought was to make a library that mirrored American preferences in the submit-Woodstock era. Mercer, in the meantime, was the “Moon River” guy—one of the all-time good songwriters, to be confident, but barely the individual to seize that era’s seismic musical achievements.

Mercer and his crew did their ideal to nod toward more modern day sounds—the first Doorways LP and Elton John’s US debut designed the cut—but their selections leaned closely on effortless listening: Lawrence Welk, Don Ho, Perry Como. Chuldenko likes to point out that there was the same quantity of Pat Boone albums as entries from the Beatles.

That very first selection of more than 1,800 LPs was presented to the White Household in 1973. But it’s the second quantity, place alongside one another at the conclusion of that 10 years, that is most intriguing. As soon as once more curated by the RIAA, it was meant to deliver the record library up to day. This time, the variety procedure would be headed by John Hammond, a hugely influential determine who experienced signed Bob Dylan, Aretha Franklin, and Bruce Springsteen. Hammond enlisted gurus to oversee each and every style, which include Modern day Jazz Quartet pianist John Lewis, who was dependable for jazz, and Boston audio critic Bob Blumenthal, who led the pop picks. “The thought of aiding choose the pop records for the songs library at the White Property just seemed like a gasoline, an huge amount of enjoyable,” suggests Package Rachlis, then tunes editor at the Boston Phoenix, who was one particular of Blumenthal’s advisers on the task. “Who wouldn’t want to do that?”

Points kicked off with a celebratory lunch at the White Home hosted by Rosalynn Carter. Blumenthal recalls that he took the option to truly feel out the President’s staff. “I try to remember obtaining visions of putting some rather transgressive things on the listing,” he claims. “There was an album by Randy Newman at the time known as Fantastic Previous Boys, and there’s a tune on there, ‘Rednecks,’ which is a person of the biggest critiques of the two Southern and Northern racism. I wished to set that in. His team man or woman claimed, ‘Oh, the President enjoys that album.’ I considered, Ok! That type of gave me license to make selections I considered would be a excellent, consultant sampling instead than owning to censor myself.”

The list was hashed out during classes in a Manhattan convention home, and real to Blumenthal’s eyesight, the selection was decidedly a lot more adventurous this time all around: soul, punk, salsa, gospel, funk, disco, and additional. There were noticeable picks representing rock-and-roll’s record, with entries from the likes of Chuck Berry, Minimal Richard, and Elvis Presley. And common preferences had been properly represented by artists these kinds of as Donna Summer time, Fleetwood Mac, and Earth, Wind & Fireplace. Blumenthal pressed for a Latin-songs portion that had data from Beny Moré, Joe Bataan, and Johnny Pacheco, between some others.

There had been also a lot of remaining-discipline LPs—music whose inclusion, Rachlis claims, made available “a selected kind of subversive joy.” Funkadelic’s Hardcore Jollies manufactured the lower, as did In no way Head the Bollocks, Here’s the Sexual intercourse Pistols and Captain Beefheart’s Trout Mask Reproduction. A Gil Scott-Heron compilation. Talking Heads’ A lot more Songs About Properties and Meals. The Ramones’ Rocket to Russia. And this time about, there had been no options from Don Ho, whilst Barry Manilow’s Biggest Hits did lend an uncomplicated-listening note to the proceedings. (“I never know whether or not I would have involved that if I were being undertaking it nowadays,” says Blumenthal.)

The 2nd installment of the library was unveiled for the duration of a ceremony at the White Residence in early 1981, attended by the President and Initially Lady. At that stage, the Carters have been on their way out Blumenthal remembers seeing moving trucks outside the home. The collection was most likely taken out of the White Property not long thereafter and place into storage. Chuldenko thinks the Reagans ended up the kinds who sent it away—perhaps even just before the new LPs could be unpacked and included to the library. It is not like Ron and Nancy have been at any time going to be rocking out to “Teenage Lobotomy.”

Chuldenko was thrilled to discover that the songs library was true, but what he genuinely desired was to see it—and maybe in fact listen to some of the documents. Even an ex-President’s grandson just can’t just stroll into the White House, nonetheless, and in any case, the vinyl was socked absent in that top secret facility, which Chuldenko imagined seeking like the huge government warehouse at the stop of Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Undaunted, Chuldenko put in an formal ask for to look at out the selection, describing that he was operating on a documentary movie. It took some time, but at some point the White Home offered to dig the records out and give him accessibility. So in December 2010, Chuldenko showed up at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue with a movie crew and a tiny team that provided Blumenthal and Rachlis. He also introduced a turntable and speakers.

Right after the group arrived, they were being ushered into the White Residence screening place. And there, lastly, was the selection: history-loaded boxes stacked up in entrance of the motion picture display screen. The LPs had been held in their unique sleeves, which were inserted into shade-coded binders (mild blue for pop, yellow for classical, and many others.). Every single was adorned with the presidential seal and a foil stamp that study WHITE Dwelling Document LIBRARY. The total thing reeked of gravitas and respectability—except that inside of a binder, rather than some speech sent by FDR in the ’40s, you could discover a mint-problem duplicate of Macho Person by the Village Men and women.

What to perform initially? They agreed on Van Morrison’s Astral Weeks, a profound and meditative report that has a way of reworking any listening session into a non secular encounter. As those people incredible opening Richard Davis bass notes floated from the speakers, President Obama was upstairs, occupied jogging the nation.

It was a surreal scene, but there ended up hundreds of records to check out and documentary footage to shoot, so they just held digging. “With every single box, there was this new treasure inside,” Chuldenko remembers. “I understood what was in there on paper, but it’s various when you really keep these documents. They had by no means been performed. It was like walking into a record store in 1979. They had been definitely pristine.”

At one position, they resolved to hear to a politically billed punk-rock landmark: the Clash’s self-titled 1977 debut. “I’m so bo-o-ored with the U-S-A!” Joe Strummer snarled—a refrain that had just about surely never ever rattled the partitions of the presidential residence prior to that instant. “We set that on,” Chuldenko claims, “and it was just like, ‘Oh, my gosh, I’m participating in the Clash . . . in the White Dwelling!’ I signify, what an unbelievable protest file. And it is not like I introduced it myself. I am playing the White House’s duplicate.”

Potentially about now you’re wondering how you can look at this intriguing documentary about the world’s most unique report collection. Nicely, you just can’t. In the stop, Chuldenko in no way did make the film 12 years later on, the footage stays unseen by the general public. He wasn’t ready to drum up the funding, he suggests, and he’s been fast paced with a long listing of other initiatives.

But some thing transpired at the stop of that excursion to the White House that has caught with him all these years—a relocating instant that has kept him invested. It arrived at the conclusion of the stop by, when a staffer arrived to politely advise it was time to wrap up and a few guys in overalls appeared with hand vehicles. “They get started packing up the packing containers and carrying them away,” Chuldenko says. “And it’s type of sad! I couldn’t aid but feel, ‘Wait a minute: These are heading again into deep, darkish storage—quite perhaps in no way to be viewed once more. And I really don’t want this to go absent.’ That was when I was like, ‘We’ve obtained to do a thing.’ ” At any time due to the fact, Chuldenko has been actively playing about with an concept: He would appreciate to by some means build a 3rd installment of the library.

After all, the present collection is missing all of the vital audio which is been introduced around the previous 4 a long time. “There is no rap or hip-hop in there,” suggests Chuldenko. “There’s no digital songs. There are no boy bands, no Madonna or Britney Spears. No Michael Jackson! I really do not know how you do a 3rd volume and not put in [Public Enemy’s] It Can take a Nation of Millions to Maintain Us Back or NWA. These are landmark data that helped to shape our society.”

Not long ago, his strategy has began to obtain some momentum. The White House Historical Association contacted Chuldenko a number of months in the past, asking him if he’d write about the record library for its quarterly journal and do a short interview on its podcast, The 1600 Sessions. That received him wondering about the footage he’d shot and the study he’d done—and also about that sadness he’d felt when the assortment was carted away.

Now he’s starting to get the job done on his very long-gestating system to do a new installment. Fairly than assemble a bodily library, although, Chuldenko is contemplating this would be an in depth created playlist, which would be printed as a ebook. One idea is to have prominent people add album picks. Chuldenko would then film them speaking about their possibilities and integrate that footage into his documentary—which could be released in conjunction with the ebook. The White Home Historic Association truly revealed catalogs for the first two record collections (these very long-out-of-print books now bring significant income on the internet), so the idea helps make a good deal of feeling.

In addition it would be a blast to carry the collection into the 21st century. The White Residence report library “is a treasure, and folks have to have to know about it,” Chuldenko claims. “We want to update this. We’ve acquired a ton of catching up to do.”

ENSENADA, Baja California, Mexico (June 12, 2021) – SoCal’s Hall of Famer Larry Roeseler captured one for the ages when he was declared the overall and SCORE Trophy Truck winner of the BFGoodrich Tires 53rd SCORE Baja 500, presented by 4 Wheel Parts (June 12, 2021).
Clocked before penalties, the legendary 64-year-old Desert racing warrior was the third vehicle to reach the finish line in the elapsed-time race.
Roeseler, 64, of Boulevard, Calif., climbed to the top of the ladder, after penalties were issued, in his No. 43 Baja Jerky Cantina Racing Toyota Tundra built by ID Designs. He finished the grueling 466.00-mile race in a winning time of 10 hours, 16 minutes and two seconds with an average speed of 45.39 miles per hour.
WIN FOR THE AGES
For the iconic ‘Mr Baja’, the victory is his 12th overall win in this race and his 18th class triumph. He earned his first class win in the SCORE Baja 500 in 1972 and earned his first overall in 1975 riding with the late Bruce Ogilvie on a Harley-Davison motorcycle.
LR, as he is also known, won his first two 4-wheel overalls in this race in 2002 and 2003 as the second driver for Troy Herbst in the legendary Class 1 ‘Land Shark’ open-wheel desert race car.
For Roeseler, a member of both the AMA Hall of Fame and the Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame, nine of his overalls in the SCORE Baja 500 were on motorcycles, two were in unlimited Class 1 open-wheel desert race cars and this was his first in the marquee SCORE Trophy Truck division for high-tech, 950 horsepower unlimited custom trucks.
He also now has earned four career SCORE Trophy Truck race wins. His last SCORE Trophy Truck overall was last year as the second driver for Luke McMillin. Before last year, his previous win in the featured class was in 2008 SCORE Baja 1000 peninsula run from Ensenada to La Paz when he was the second driver for Roger Norman.
For his victory at the SCORE Baja 500, Roeseler also earned the $15,000 contingency bonus that was posted for the overall winner by BFGoodrich Tires.
FASTRAX
This spectacular event, one of the top 10 motorsports events held in the world with over 100,000 spectators spread out along the course, a total of 240 starters raced in Pro and Sportsman Motorcycles for cars, trucks, UTVS, motorcycles and quads racing in 51 classes. Entries came from 24 U.S. States along with host Mexico, Bolivia, Canada, France, New Zealand and Peru.
Following complete data-tracking review and input from the Competition Review Board, preliminary results have now been made totally official. The results were pending the outcome of the competition review board recommendations regarding two classes, SCORE Trophy Truck and Class 1/2-1600. Both classes have now been finalized with no additional penalties involving Class 1/2-1600.
There were 240 official starters, with 146 official finishers for a surprising 60.83 percent finishing rate considering the difficulty of the course in the elapsed-time race.
THE PODIUM
Joining Roeseler on the podium were San Diego’s Andy McMillin in second place and Mexico’s Gustavo ‘Tavo’ Vildosola Jr. who took the final spot in third place.
McMillin was officially timed in 10:19:59 in his No. 31 McMillin Racing Chevy Silverado.
Driving his No. 21 Vildosola Racing Ford Raptor, Vildosola Jr, 39 of Mexicali, finished in a time of 10:18:09, just 15.3 seconds on corrected time behind A. McMillin.
LR SPEAKS
“We knew it would be tough, I knew it would be ten hours, but it was every bit of what we expected, it was fantastic, stated the champion Roeseler. “I bet no one was disappointed. There were some good battles out there. There were places we were doing 130 and there were places we were doing two miles per hour just because of the rocks.”
“We started tenth and just kept pushing. I went back and forth with John T. Lennon (No. 73) a couple of times and then Ampudia (Alan Ampudia, No. 10) crashed, Tavo (Gustavo ‘Tavo’ Vildosola Jr, No. 21) got a flat and we saw Menzies (Bryce Menzies, No. 7) in the pit around race mile 300 and we realized we were fourth. We had no flats and didn’t do anything to the truck outside of sliding off the road a few times. It was just a very memorable race for us. My very first SCORE Baja 500 was in 1972 – I rode a 175cc motorcycle.”
“And here I am, over 40 years later and still hitting it. This is a very, very awesome finish and we’re really, really happy.”
“Hats off to SCORE for producing another spectacular SCORE Baja race. I have been part of the development of this sport for over 40 years and I can really appreciate all that SCORE continues to do to improve the quality of its races.”
VILDOSOLA JR REMARKS
Following his third-place podium finish, Vildosola Jr said, “It was a tough course. Just for the attrition and how the SCORE Trophy Trucks are going to finish today, we’re going to see it. We made the podium, but I didn’t drive us well enough to get to the top. I made some mistakes early that really cost us a lot of time and a couple of spots. It’s disappointing. We had two programmed pit stops for the race and ended up stopping eight times for different things. It’s not a winning formula to stop eight times in a SCORE Baja 500 or in any race. We weren’t able to recover in the end but we pushed hard and did what we could. We’re here, I’m proud of that and hopefully this finish puts us on the podium and makes a bad day much better.”

American Idol Season 1 – The Season That Started All Of It

American Idol Season 1 – The Season That Started All Of It

Yes, it was just a little much less than 5 years earlier, June 11, 2002, when American Idol was very first aired as well as a program larger and also extra prominent than many individuals might have visualized was birthed. Today it would certainly be difficult to locate an individual in America that hasn’t at the very least listened to of American Idol.

What was the initial period like? The very first 2 programs were devoted to the courts, Randy Jackson, Paula Abdul, and also Simon Cowell mosting likely to tryouts (kept in Chicago, New York, Dallas, Miami, Atlanta, Seattle, as well as Los Angeles) and also discovering candidates to send out on to Hollywood week. One hundred twenty one entrants made it to Hollywood to attempt to make among the 30 areas to carry on to the rounds where the general public begun ballot.

Throughout weeks 3, 4, as well as 5 of the program, 10 of the 30 entrants carried out. America elected and also just 3 out of each team of 10 went on. On week 6, 5 wildcard entrants returned to the program with the courts selecting one of those candidates to go on, for a total amount of 10 candidates in the last rounds.

The complying with week, 2 candidates were sent out residence. The program began getting rid of entrants one by one up until there were just 2 participants left.

Kelly Clarkson and also Justin Guarini were the period one finalists. Kelly took the crown on September 4, 2002 and also has actually taken place to come to be an extremely effective pop musician with a number of Grammy honors to her name, numerous hit tracks, and also numerous very effective cds. She’s turned into one of the leading names in popular song.

After the initial period finished, Kelly as well as Justin made a motion picture appropriately entitled “From Justin to Kelly,” however their American Idol appeal really did not move to the huge motion picture display. The motion picture was a flop, although the inadequate story might have had a great deal to do with its awful efficiency.

The joggers up in later periods of American Idol have actually had as a lot, as well as often extra, success than the victor, that had not been the instance period 1’s runner-up, Justin Guarini although the American Idol guidelines at that time possibly added to his troubles. During that time the Idol policies really did not permit Justin to launch any type of cds or taking outdoors deals of any kind of kind till Kelly’s cd was launched. He was compelled to refuse numerous deals to show up on tv programs, to design for Tommy Hilfiger, as well as doing the soundtrack recording for a minimum of one movie.

By the time Justin was enabled to launch his very own cd, he was taking on the launches of the Ruben Studdard and also Clay Aiken, the period 2 victor as well as runner-up. His looks on the recently syndicated program, American Idol Rewind, appear to be assisting him acquire extra discover once again.

Tamrya Gray, that completed 4th on the program, has actually been doing alright. She has actually launched her initial cd to lukewarm sales, however has actually had some success with a number of acting tasks she has actually done.

Nikki McKibbin, that completed third the initial period, has actually had a hard time considering that American Idol finished however she is ultimately returning to her music origins. Her launching cd is slated to be launched May 1, 2007.

The most present period of American Idol, period 6, will certainly have a number of extra episodes in it than the initial period. An additional significant distinction is that throughout Hollywood week the courts (yes it’s still Randy, Paula, as well as Simon) choose that the leading 24 participants are.

Also if you aren’t a follower of vocal singing, you might wish to enjoy the program simply to see Simon Cowell, among the courts, gush his extremely imaginative objections of the participants weekly. It’s an enjoyable program.

Omar Sosa & Marialy Pacheco: Manos

Omar Sosa and Marialy Pacheco… two distinct musical minds, two unique voices, but seemingly of one vision, united as if by one heart, play soulfully like you have rarely heard before. In fact, not since Chick Corea and Herbie Hancock played a series of duets – performances that was captured live on a double album An Evening with Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea [Columbia, 1978] – has something quite so spectacular been committed to tape. What marks this recording as entirely different even from that high watermark of piano performances is the almost mystical nature of this recording, Manos, by Mr Sosa and Miss Pacheco.

They come from almost diametrically opposed schools of thought. Miss Pacheco is almost completely absorbed by her classically shaped background and Mr Sosa, by his Afri-Cuban school of thought. His dance is sparked by a drum-like heartbeat. In Miss Pacheco’s pianism you can often discern gigues and sarabands. But their discernable love for music and the belief that there is, but one music continuum – be it the one that echoes off the shores of Cuba, in Valdés, Flynn and Peruchín, or another that follows the line drawn in the sands of time by Scarlatti, Chopin and Liszt – that binds them together in a spiral of piano DNA.

On the repertoire of Manos Miss Pacheco and Mr Sosa conspire to underline six invented melodies [by one or the other pianist], and one Cuban classic, each with an incipient sense of drama. Light and shadows dance as if in a double helix. Be it in tragedy or in unfettered joy, a sense of catharsis prevails, in wave after wave of music. At any given moment in time Miss Pacheco’s instrument seems to draw towards the front of the stage. Often [and seemingly triggered by some mysterious cue] Mr Sosa’s twin Bösendorfer leaps in to occupy centre-stage, and when he isn’t harmonising and rhapsodising on some line left open by Miss Pacheco, he busies himself with his electronic keyboard, and the air becomes awash with celestial atmospherics; often this too is accompanied by a ghostly chant or chatter seemingly from the great beyond.

Case in point is the song El Bola, as well as midway through Low Tides. On the former, especially the top line melody and the harmonic accompaniment are unforgettably entwined like two lovelorn musicians playing below the beloved’s window. On Angustiado 4 Hands the outer movements are breathtakingly spirited, where textures are heavily weighted and the central, spiraling motif unfolds in a melee of long-breathed heavily pedalled sentences. Mr Sosa, clearly super-charged throughout, fires on all cylinders and both musicians exchange long-limbed improvisations through the montuno. Throughout, Mr Sosa has little to do except make way for Miss Pacheco who, clearly enamoured of her fellow-pianist’s beckoning flights, is easily drawn into the music’s slipstream. If I were to pick a favourite duet that would be on the ethereally beautiful Cambodian Smiles, which is altogether bewitching, its quiet outer movements are superbly articulated and beautifully understated.

The song Metro unfolds in wave after wave of stuttering, shuffling and dancing rhythms finally settling into a towering edifice teeming with chattering melodies seamlessly bound together by each pianist who suggests and develops an idea that is picked up by the other, who then proceeds to engage [with the originator of the idea] in a series of thrusts and parries almost as if challenging one another to a friendly duel. The two sections of the piece are broken up by a marvellously developed montuno section. This ravishingly beautiful set concludes with a rhapsodic version of Moises Simon’s El Manisero. This is a piece that so many pianists – both Cuban and from elsewhere – have contrived to bring to life. But the version on this disc by Mr Sosa and Miss Pacheco provides an account of the vital, colour-and-texture conscious real-life drama; the real thing, as it were, from the lips of the peanut-vendor. Such a spectacular live performance by two pianists will almost certainly be unmatched in many years to come. At one time or another you may feel that the mystical chanting and effects may gave something to do with this, at other times you feel it is the spirituality of Mr Sosa’s playing or the seduction of Miss Pacheco’s own pianism. Whatever the case, this is a feast for the heavens, celebrated right here on earth.

‘Heartbroken,’ pained as Texas town mourns school victims

Ryan Ramirez fought back tears at a Wednesday vigil as he spoke of his “lovable” 10-year-old daughter Alithia, an aspiring artist who was among the 19 schoolchildren killed in a cold-blooded shooting that has devastated a tight-knit community.

As mourners embraced and wept, relatives and friends of those murdered in the latest US school massacre gathered on the bleachers and on the dirt of a fairground arena in the small town of Uvalde.

Some in the crowd of about 1,000 held portraits of the dead, others squeezed stuffed animals and drawings, each struggling to comprehend the unspeakable horror of the previous day.

“I’m just heartbroken right now,” Ramirez told AFP and others as Alithia’s mother hugged their other daughter.

“She was a real good artist” and aspired to greatness, Ramirez said, flipping through a portfolio of Alithia’s colorful paintings as well as birthday cards she drew for her mother.

“My daughter would want everybody that was involved to be strong, and keep it together. That’s what we’re trying to do.”

Religious figures offered prayers at the bilingual vigil, where Governor Greg Abbott gripped Uvalde’s Mayor Ruben Nolasco in a long hug.

A grieving Esmeralda Bravo held a photograph of her granddaughter Nevaeh, one of those who died.

“This has no explanation, my granddaughter did not deserve this,” Bravo said quietly.

“She was a good little girl, very shy and very pretty,” she added. “It means so much to me to have this support from the community, but I would rather have my granddaughter here with me.”

Hours earlier and blocks away, Aida Hernandez shed bitter tears as she left mass at the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic church.

In the small house of worship off Uvalde’s main street, the largely Hispanic congregation prayed for the victims of America’s worst school shooting in a decade.

“My experience was of horror and pain. I knew the victims. I’m still in shock,” said Hernandez, in her sixties.

The town of 15,000 inhabitants, located 50 miles (80 kilometers) from the border with Mexico, was until 24 hours ago like every other small US town: a grid of streets dotted with shopping malls, gas stations and fast-food chains.

But on Tuesday everything changed, when an 18-year-old gunman sowed carnage at Robb Elementary School, killing 19 young children and two of their teachers.

The massacre plunged residents into both incomprehension and despair.

“When you teach and you’re in the classroom, that’s your job to protect them,” said Hernandez, who taught at Robb Elementary until she retired two years ago.

“They did more beyond what they were supposed to do.”

– ‘Too many times’ –

Rosie Buantel was equally grief-stricken — but outraged, too.

“I’m sad and I’m angry at our government, for not doing more about gun control,” the woman in her fifties told AFP.

“We’ve gone through this one too many times. And still there’s nothing done. They’re still debating.”

Throughout the day, people in Uvalde made their way to a municipal center, where they could receive psychological support.

On the day of the shooting, many relatives and friends of the victims faced hours of anguished waiting to find out what happened to their loved ones.

In front of the municipal center, in the blazing midday Texas heat, groups of adults and children chatted, coming and going under the watchful gaze of police officers.

Volunteer psychologist Iveth Pacheco had traveled from San Antonio to provide support to those in need.

“It’s just one of those situations where you just have to be present,” she said. “We have to be ready for the child whatever questions they have, and it’s the same thing with the adults right now.”

Young Alithia had similar questions last September when she lost a close classmate, Nico, in a car crash in Dallas, her father said.

She processed the grief in one of the few ways that made sense: through art.

The girl made a richly detailed drawing of Nico up in heaven, looking down at the friend he left behind. In Alithia’s picture, “he was drawing her down there,” Ramirez said.
