Comic Book Questions Answered, is a feature where I answer whatever questions you folks might have about comic books (feel free to e-mail questions to me at [email protected]). Today, we look at where Sam Wilson received the shield that he currently wields as Captain America.
One of the most interesting changes that we have seen in comics over the past ten years or so has been the dismissal of the idea that you can’t have multiple versions of major heroes. In the old days, superheroes would frequently be replaced (Tony Stark was replaced as Iron Man by James Rhodes, Thor was replaced as, well, Thor, by Eric Masterson, and Steve Rogers was replaced as Captain America by John Walker), but eventually, the original hero would return to their identity, and after the replacement hero was given a spotlight while filling in for the main hero, the replacement would be given their own superhero identity (Rhodes became War Machine, Eric Masterson became Thunderstrike and John Walker became USAgent).

However, in recent years, DC and Marvel have simply said, “Well, why does the replacement HAVE to give up the identity when the original returns?” We first saw this when Barry Allen returned as the Flash during Final Crisis, and Wally West remained as the Flash, as well. When Bruce Wayne returned after seemingly dying in Final Crisis, he and Dick Grayson both remained Batman (with Dick being the Batman of Gotham City and the Justice League, while Bruce was the more international Batman). It took Marvel longer, but it has eventually caught up, as well, and currently, Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson are both serving as Captain America.
The only issue with that, though, is Captain America famously wields a shield (there’s even a song about it – “When Captain America throws his mighty shield, all those who oppose his mighty shield must yield” and so on and so forth), so now that both heroes are Captain America, reader Sam C. wanted to know which shield Sam Wilson is using. As far as I can tell, Sam is using a shield designed by the Aberrant Crimes Division of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. How did we get there, though?
What shield did Sam Wilson first use as Captain America?
In Captain America #25 (by Rick Remender, Carlos Pacheco, Mariano Taib and Marte Gracia), Steve Rogers saw a villain essentially revert the effects of the Super Soldier Serum within Steve Rogers, so that he was now “only” a very fit 90-year-old man. Obviously, while his mind was still sharp. Steve couldn’t continue on as Captain America any more since his body couldn’t possibly withstand the rigors of battle, so he passed along the mantle of Captain America to one of his closest friends, Sam Wilson. Along with the name, of course, came Captain America’s iconic indestructible shield…
As Sam continued to serve as Captain America, Steve Rogers slowly got sucked back into the world of superheroics. Even as he retired, he let the other Avengers know that he was available for tactical support, but he couldn’t help but do more, and eventually joined the Uncanny Avengers as their new leader, occasionally using a special suit of armor to allow him to fight.
In Captain America: Sam Wilson #7 (by Nick Spencer and Daniel Acuna), Steve and his Avengers uncovered a secret plot by S.H.I.E.L.D. to create a special town where various super villains would be brainwashed into residing in as a sort of living prison. A living Cosmic Cube, known as Kobik (with the mentality of a little girl) was powering the whole place, but S.H.I.E.L.D. didn’t realize that the Red Skull had taken control of the little girl through manipulating her innocent mind into believing that the Skull’s way of life was the correct way to live. Steve Rogers tried to protect her when Crossbones came to attack her, but it was a difficult fight considering, again, Steve was no better than a fit (but very old) man…
As Steve is nearing death in his fight with Crossobones, Kobik connects to Steve through telepathy and tells him that he doesn’t have to die if he doesn’t want to, she can fix him, and make him a hero again. Steve obviously agrees, and Crossbones is shocked that his elderly prey is, well, not so so old anymore. When Sam and the Winter Soldier (another one of Cap’s old partners, Bucky Barnes), they are happily shocked to see that Steve’s Super Soldier Serum abilities have returned…
Obviously, Steve Rogers wasn’t going to tell Sam Wilson he had to give up being Captain America just because Steve was healthy again. They agreed to just share the name, and since Sam was already using Cap’s original shield, Steve Rogers gained a new shield that also served a bit more of an offensive weapon than his original shield, as he received his own ongoing series, Captain America: Steve Rogers…
What no one knew at the time, however, was that Kobik, being corrupted by Red Skull, also altered Steve Rogers’ history when she brought him back to his vital look. Since Red Skull’s values were “right” in her mind, she assumed that if Steve Rogers was a hero like the Red Skull, then he should be LIKE the Red Skull, so Steve Rogers was altered into becoming a villain. Captain America then conquered the United States. Sam Wilson, disgusted by his old friend, gave up being Captain America and went back to being the Falcon. Eventually, the REAL Steve Rogers showed up (Kobik had essentially created a new version of Steve Rogers with her powers) and defeated the evil Hydra Captain America. Now back as the “only” Captain America, Steve Rogers reclaimed his original shield.
Where did Sam Wilson get his current shield as Captain America from?
In 2021, as part of Captain America’s 80th anniversary, the miniseries The United States of Captain America introduced a number of new heroes who were also calling themselves Captain America, while meanwhile, a villain was trying to tarnish the name of Captain America (which had only JUST been finally redeemed following the whole Hydra-Cap deal) and using Cap’s actual shield to do so (which was stolen from Steve). So Steve asked Sam to take up the Captain America name again to help him make this right in United States of Captain America #1 (by Christoper Cantwell, Dale Eaglesham and Matt Milla)…
In the next issue, we see the two Caps in action together again, with Steve Rogers using the energy shield that Tony Stark had made for him a while back, and Sam, meanwhile, was using a new black and white shield. When Steve asked about it, Sam explains that it was designed from him by Misty Knight, who was working for the Aberrant Crimes Division of the FBI…
However, after that series ended, Steve and Sam both received their own ongoing series, Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty for Steve and Captain America: Symbol of Truth for Sam. The two titles were launched out of a special one-shot called, simply, Captain America #0. In the comic (by writers Tochi Onyebuchi, Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly and artist Mattia De Iulis), we see that Sam has since re-painted his shield in brighter colors…
