Two-time Professional Fighters League lightweight champion Kayla Harrison believes the chances of her ever meeting Cris “Cyborg” Justino are “slim” following Justino’s decision to re-sign with Bellator MMA last week.

Harrison (15-1) said she has two fights left on her PFL contract, which is set to expire in December. The PFL opted to not utilize Harrison in its 2023 season format, in favor of trying to set up a pay-per-view event between her and Justino. The PFL made a strong push to sign Justino, but she ultimately returned to Bellator, where she is a featherweight champion.

“I was told it was a done deal with PFL, that she was going to sign and plan [to fight her] on ‘this date,'” Harrison told ESPN. “So, I had a lot of hope. It is what it is. I can’t control it.

Editor’s Picks

“I think [the chances of this fight ever happening] are slim. I think it’s pretty slim. I’m not going to lie to the fans. I think the chances of us fighting are decreasing, not increasing.”

Harrison is a two-time Olympic gold medalist in judo and considered one of the top female fighters in the world. There’s been speculation around a fight between Justino and Harrison for years, really ever since Harrison made her professional MMA debut in 2018. Harrison agreed to sign with Bellator last year in order to make the fight happen, but the PFL exercised a matching right in her contract, which prevented it.

The PFL went all-in on the matchup this year. Now that Justino is back with Bellator, it leaves Harrison in limbo. The most obvious matchup for Harrison in the PFL is a fourth meeting against 2022 champion Larissa Pacheco, who handed Harrison her first loss via unanimous decision last November. The two have already fought three times, though. Harrison defeated Pacheco twice in 2019.

It’s possible Harrison could go all year without a fight due to the lack of options. Harrison, 32, said she doesn’t believe that will happen, but acknowledged the possibility.

“I think they’re going to find a way for me to fight,” said Harrison, on the PFL. “I believe in them, they believe in me and they want me to fight. It’s not in their best interest to sit on me and they have to pay me a ton of money. So, they’re gonna find a way … I’ve also been counseled [not fighting] could happen and I need to prepare myself for that. So, I’m trying to. I’m not there yet, but I’m trying to prepare if I don’t.”

According to Harrison, she becomes an unrestricted free agent in December, and is likely to draw interest from the PFL, Bellator and the UFC. She did say one silver lining in the in activity of 2023, thus far, is that she’s healed from lingering injuries and has plenty of time left in the sport despite the recent frustrations.

“I’m hungry,” Harrison said. “A lot of the health concerns that were f—ing me up last year have, thank God, subsided. So, yeah. I’m not going anywhere.”

Cannes Parties: Some for Charity, Some Not as Vanity Fair Soiree Up Against Night of De Niro, DiCaprio, Julianne Moore Premieres, But Better World Fund Will Raise Money for the Rainforest Next Night | Showbiz411

0 629

The 2023 Cannes parties are taking shape, but movies may get in the way of one of them.

Saturday, May 20th is the date of Vanity Fair’s soiree far away in Cap d’Antibes, the first they’ve had in a while. But the 20th is also the night Cannes will really be for serious movies and the red carpet right down in the center of the action.

At 7pm, Martin Scorsese‘s three hour “Killers of the Flower Moon” will be unveiled at the Palais de Festivals. The red carpet will bring the director, plus Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio to the show, meaning 7pm is fungible at best.

Then at 10pm comes Todd Haynes‘s “May-December” starring Julianne Moore and Natalie Portman.

And then, exhausted famished stars will head up to the Hotel duCap in Antibes, on a winding, one lane road? By the time they get in there, the Eurotrash will have eaten all the canapes!

We’ll see how that works out.

Very smartly, however, the next night — when things cool down on the red carpet– the Amazonia Fund Alliance and Akbaraly Foundation will have its inaugural Better World Fund gala at the newly refurbished glamorous International Hotel Carlton, the centerpiece of the Croisette.

Organizer Thierry Kleminiuk — famous from running legendary Paris’s A list restaurant, Man Ray, tells me there will be a heavy UN presence. He says:

“We will be celebrating our launch event, hosted by the Better World Fund.

“As of now, I can confirm the presence of various officials from Brazil such as Rodrigo Pacheco the President of the Senate along with Sonia Guajajara the Minister of indigenous peoples & Chief Mapu, renowned Spiritual Leader & Activist from Amazonia and Osmar Ribeiro de Almeida Júnior, the Executive Secretary of the Ministry of Development and Social Assistance, Family and Fight against Hunger. I will provide you with the complete list of Officials & Celebrity guests soon.”

So nice to see a big party that raises money for a good cause, instead of just idle hedonism.

Klemeniuk agrees.

“Our goal is to help Indigenous people and the Rainforest they inhabit, through conservation and reforestation, hand in hand with very prominent non-profit environmental organizations in Brazil such as SPVS Mata Atlantica (https://www.spvs.org.br/), SOS Amazônia (https://sosamazonia.org.br/) and the Alok Institute (https://institutoalok.org/en/alok-institute/).

He adds: “We have established direct contact with hundreds of indigenous villages through our partner Comtxae (https://www.comtxae.com/) and have started to work on several projects, notably providing pure & drinkable water to the indigenous people using Atmospheric Water Generators from Beyond Water (beyondwater.earth).”

Caponata alla giudia: Sicilian aubergine and vegetable stew

Step 1
Cut the aubergines into ¾-inch (2 cm) cubes. Transfer to a colander, salt generously, weight them down with a plate, and let drain for 30 minutes in the kitchen sink.

Step 2
Cut the half onion into very thin slices. Cut the whole onion into chunks roughly the same size as the aubergine cubes. Cut the celery into chunks and cut the cherry tomatoes in half.

Step 3
Pour the olive oil into a large non-stick skillet set over medium heat, add the sliced onion and garlic, and cook for about 3 minutes, until the garlic is slightly browned. Add the celery, tomatoes (both cherry and chopped), olives, capers and the chopped onion to the pan and cook for 10 minutes, until the vegetables begin to soften. Add the vinegar and sugar and cook for another 10 minutes. Remove from the heat.

Step 4
Remove the plate covering the aubergines and squeeze the aubergines in the colander to remove any remaining liquid.

Step 5
Pour 3cm (1 inch) of sunflower or peanut oil into a large saucepan and warm over medium heat until a deep-fry thermometer reads 180°C (350°F). You can test the oil by dropping a small piece of food, such as a slice of apple, into it: if it sizzles nicely but doesn’t bubble up too wildly, the oil is ready. (An apple is said to help minimize the smell of the frying oil, so I generally go for that, but any bit of food will do for testing the heat.)

Step 6
Add only as many aubergine cubes to the pan as will fit in a single layer without crowding and fry until golden, turning often. Remove the aubergine with a slotted spoon and spread out on a paper towel–lined plate to drain. Cook the remaining aubergine cubes in the same manner, adding more oil if needed.

Step 7
Once the fried aubergine has drained, add it to the skillet of vegetables. Season with ½ tsp salt and pepper to taste, adding a bit of water if the vegetables look dry, and cook the caponata over medium heat, stirring frequently, for 5 minutes.

Step 8
Stir in the basil leaves, remove from the heat, and let the caponata cool to room temperature before serving.

Demons, goddesses and scales: Texts between Lori and Chad Daybell

By LAUREN SILVER and COURT TV STAFF

BOISE, Idaho (Court TV) – The fifth week of Lori Vallow Daybell‘s murder trial began on Monday at the Ada County Courthouse with the focus on more text messages sent between Lori and her fifth husband, Chad Daybell.

Lori is charged with the murders of her two youngest children, Tylee Ryan and JJ Vallow, and conspiracy in the death of Chad’s first wife, Tammy Daybell. Lori has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Courtroom sketch shows Lori Vallow Daybell whispering to her attorney.

Before the jury was in the courtroom, prosecutors told the judge they would call two more witnesses after the current one was done testifying, and asked to introduce additional exhibits. Among the exhibits they have asked to introduce is the entire “James and Elena” story, which was not published but written by Chad for Lori. It is believed to be intended as a metaphor for their own love story.

FBI Special Agent Doug Hart, who returned to the stand on Monday, led the investigation into Lori’s iCloud accounts and read texts between Lori and Chad into the record.

  • July 15, 2019
    • Chad (to Lori): I know you won’t get this text for another hour or so but my love for you is overflowing right now. I just want to hold you love endlessly. You are my wonderful best friend that I can’t live without. [Two heart emojis]
    • Lori (to Chad): And yet…you are. So sad [Three sad emoji] missing you just landed! Gotta get to work!!

Hart testified that texts sent on July 18 directly refer to Charles Vallow’s life insurance policy. Charles Vallow was shot and killed by Alex Cox, in what the latter claimed was self-defense.

  • July 18, 2019
    • Lori (to Chad): I just got the letter from the insurance company saying I am not the beneficiary. It’s a spear thru my heart. Who do you think changed it to?? Brandon?? Or probably Kay?? He left nothing for JJ
    • Chad (to Lori): Wow. That’s terrible. There is no way to find out?
    • Lori (to Chad): I might be able to see when I get his computer on Sunday. I could check the emails I sent to the insurance company. It will show change of beneficiary. He must have done it recently!
    • Chad (to Lori): It seems you would have had to agree to the change. Maybe your name was forged. You should have a good paper trail to prove it.
    • Chad (to Lori): I love you. This is terrible, but it is probably another step in bringing the Gadiantons, especially Brandon.
    • Chad (to Lori): Hmmm. It will be interesting if it got changed after he had two bullets in his chest.
    • Lori (to Chad): I talked to the insurance company. He changed it in March…Ned before we got rid of him. They can’t tell me to who of course…I’ll still get the 4000 a month from SS.
    • Lori (to Chad): I don’t think it could have. U can’t change it after the death date.
    • Chad (to Lori): I have been instructed to focus my efforts on Hillary.

Hart testified that Hillary was a name assigned to the spirit in Tylee’s body, and that Raphael is Chad. Blake is Melani’s son.

    • Lori (to Chad): What’s Blake’s percentage??
    • Lori (to Chad): He drew 3 crosses on the wall in his bedroom. We just finished painting over them.
    • Lori (to Chad): Like he was marking it for the dark side to find him.
    • Chad (to Lori): Blake is at 7. Si I took my sword of light and sliced his aura vertically in several places. You should be able to now rip and burn it.
    • Chad (to Lori): I also decreased his pain tolerance. To 1 percent and greatly increased his pain. His desire to depart is at 80 percent.

Hart testified that Rhonda was a name assigned to a dark spirit in Kay Woodcock, Charles Vallow’s sister.

  • July 21, 2019
    • Lori (to Chad): Found it. Ned gave all of it to Rhonda.
    • Chad (to Lori): Glad you found that out.
    • Lori (to Chad): It fits. Now she will try to take him. Thx for working on her. Work on me too. Reading all this stuff makes me sick.
    • Chad (to Lori): We will work hard on Rhonda when we are together. I will get her numbers as low as I can by Wednesday.
    • Lori (to Chad): Good, let’s work on it hard
  • July 21, 2019
    • Chad (to Lori): James and Elena had agreed to visit the temple the following morning. She returned to the hotel room, and after additional romance on the couch, they calmed their nerves enough to give each other a blessing. As James placed her hands on her head, he connected with Elena’s true eternal self. He knew he was in the presence of an exalted goddess. Who had returned to earth to perform a special mission. This mission included being with him, and they would progress together as translated beings. The full plan wasn’t yet completely clear to him, but the immense power radiating from her confirmed his belief that she was among the great women in the universe…

Hart testified that on July 21, Charles had been dead for 10 days and Tammy was still alive.

Other text messages entered into evidence reference being together someday soon and being together on a tropical island. Lori and Chad were eventually married in Hawaii on November 5, 2019.

    • Lori (to Chad): Good morning missing you. Didn’t sleep much. Need you to check JJ. Weird stuff happened in the middle of the night. It’s like they distracted us with Blake.
    • Lori (to Chad) When u get home. Check Tylee. She is being super sweet and helpful and she cleaned her room. She is she got switched. Totally not her
    • Lori (to Chad): See if she got switched
    • Chad (to Lori): Yes, she was switched. Please let me know when you can talk, and I will explain it.
  • July 29, 2019
    • Chad (to Lori): One question: Do you want me to cause pain yet to those two 3s you’re riding with?
    • Lori (to Chad): Probably hold off on then till we arrive. They will be mistake to deal with. But I’ll text you if they start acting up and we can zap them.
    • Lori (to Chad): Miserable, not mistake
    • Chad (to Lori): Sounds great. Yes, if they are going to act up, we’ll at least give them a reason to scream. I love, cherish, reassure, and adore you. The wonderful memories just keep coming back. You are mesmerizing. Raphael is one lucky guy.

Hart testified that the message was about hurting children, and said the “3s” referenced in the message were Brighton and Blake, Melani’s sons with Brandon Boudreaux.

In messages shared with the jury, Chad and Lori also say that Kay Woodcock does not appear “inclined” to share the life insurance money after Charles Vallow’s death, prompting Lori to call Kay and her husband, Larry, “jerks.”

  • July 30, 2019
    • Chad (to Lori): I got the inspiration to go back to my original death percentages that helped us track Charles, Ned, etc. Tammy is very close. Her percentage has fallen steadily since Hiplos left. It is encouraging!
    • Lori (to Chad): What is the percentage now? What is JJ’s too?
    • Chad (to Lori): Tammy is at 3. JJ is at 2. Both are being heavily shielded to stop intruders.
    • Lori (to Chad): 2 and 3 percent? Not zero?
    • Chad (to Lori): I will explain when we talk.
    • Lori (to Chad): Ok still feeling hot for you
    • Chad (to Lori): Yes, we might need to release a little steam when we talk.
  • August 7, 2019
    • Lori (to Chad): I love you taking braxy home now. I’ll check on her
    • Lori (to Chad): She is asleep. She put a bunch of holes in the walls and doors. Definitely had demons helping her. Probably 1000
    • Lori (to Chad): Mel wants us to come up there tomorrow, but I said next Thursday to Sunday. What do u think?
    • Lori (to Chad): We r both so tired of taking care of demons. We are weary. Please ask the Lord to take them!
    • Lori: (to Chad): We just had a big fight. Probably no go on next week. [two sad emojis]
    • Chad (to Lori): My heart is crushed, but I will never stop loving you.
    • Chad (to Lori): Missing you. Heading to the girl’s funeral. Emma was her teacher and is one of the speakers. This is very difficult, but I will abide your request to not talk. I hate causing you pain, because I love you more than ever.
  • August 9, 2019
    • Lori (to Chad): Can u check Nathan Pacheco. See what level he is. Is he light??
    • Lori (to Chad): Also Mike Stroud. Mel g thinks he went dark, but I think he’s light
    • Chad (to Lori): I will check those two.
    • Chad (to Lori): Any guess on Pacheco?
    • Lori (to Chad): Just tell me
    • Chad (to Lori): 4.1 dark
    • Lori (to Chad): Nope. I get 5.1 light. Part of our team!
    • Chad (to Lori): We’ll go with your answer.
    • Lori (to Chad): Why what’s wrong with your picker?
    • Lori (to Chad): What about Mike Stroud. ? Seriously
    • Chad (to Lori): He’s done a great infiltration job.
  • August 10, 2019
    • Lori (to Chad): Please check JJ. He just woke up saying crazy stuff and won’t go back to sleep. He is talking to Blake. It’s weird.
    • Chad (to Lori): JJ is still JJ. I am told his spirit recognized Blake is evil and is unsettled by him.
    • Chad (to Lori): I, my love. How is JJ now?
    • Lori (to Chad): He’s better. He was just up talking nonsense for like 2 hours last night. I’m sure they were bugging him. Is he at zero yet? I miss you
    • Chad (to Lori): Yes, he’s at zero. He probably was partly through the veil, talking to people, both light and dark
    • Lori (to Chad): Maybe he was talking to the real Blake
    • Chad (to Lori): Yes, that was the real Blake.
    • Lori (to Chad): Do u think there is a perfectly orchestrated plan to take the children? And we just have to wait for it to be carried out?
    • Lori (to Chad): I feel lost. Like I should be doing something to help. [Sad emoji]
    • Chad (to Lori): There is a plan being orchestrated for the children. I was shown last night how it it together, but it has been taken from my mind of course.
    • Lori (to Chad): What should I be doing?
    • Chad (to Lori): You are doing everything right, my love. The Lord told me, ‘She is right on track.’ He said to just keep resolving the telestial issues, so you are unencumbered and fully free.

    • Lori (to Alex): We r trying to get to the bottom of what we need to do to eliminate them completely. I’m sure you will be told also.
    • Alex (to Lori): Excellent.

The jury was shown a video of Tylee kissing JJ at Yellowstone National Park on September 8, 2019, the last known video of Tylee alive. Another video shown to the jury, dated September 22, was the last known video of JJ alive.

Hart testified that on September 24, 2019, Lori told JJ’s babysitter, Sidney, that JJ’s grandparents took him. Hart said there is no evidence to substantiate that claim.

  • October 5, 2019
    • Chad (to Lori): Hello, sweet angel. Big news about Tammy. Please let me know if you are awake and can talk. I love you [heart emoji and lips emoji]
    • Chad (to Lori): The short version is that she has been switched. Tammy is in Limbo and level 3 demonic entity named Viola is in her body. It happened at about 10p.m. and was done by Tammy’s sister [redacted] I always knew was 3D, but it turns out she is multiple creation.
    • Chad (to Lori): Not fully sure of the timing for removal, but once her actions verify the differences, I don’t want to wait.
  • October 14, 2019
    • Lori: Well we did a lot of work today. We got her out but a new one got in. So we are still working on it. Audrey any ideas you have would be greatly appreciated it.
    • Audrey: Ok [Surprised emoji with x’s as eyes]
    • (unknown): That emoji can be associated with death.
    • Melani: Ya, but until that agreement is signed the judge is all subject to change. That’s probably the reason for the dealy
  • October 19, 2019
    • (unknown): I’m not sure if you heard but Chad’s wife died last night
    • Lori: Oh my gosh. I did not hear that. I’m in Hawaii and it’s 6:00 am.
    • Lori: Do you know what happened?
    • (unknown): Yes, she awoke in the night coughing, threw up, collapsed and passed away.
    • Lori: Not fun without you. Can u call me
    • Lori (to Chad): How are you doing is the question
    • Chad (to Lori): I’m hanging in there. My parents are staying here and we are still getting visitors, but I will call you soon.

    • Lori (to Chad): I had a bad dream about Al. Make sure he is still him and protect him
    • Lori (to Chad): He would be the one they use to get to us both. All this alone time is not good for him.
    • Chad (to Lori): I will try to reach out to him later today
    • Chad (to Lori): I just cleared all of Al’s weapons, curses and cords, and filled him with malachite healing balm. I also put angels around him.
    • Lori made a note: Alex cox multiple creation 4th creation exalted 9 times Sibling to me 2 times on 4th creation Rose is exalted 3 times Married 3 times on 4th creation and became eternal companions after 4th creation His mission is to help Lori
  • November 16, 2019
    • Lori (to Melani): Will you do this job if your whole family turns against you ?? This is what the Lord has asked of us.

Hart testified about patriarchal blessings in the LDS faith, which are given to faithful members at one point in their lives to provide spiritual guidance. Hart said the one person called to be patriarch administers the blessings, and that Chad was not authorized to give one. Hart said that Chad delivered a blessing to Alex Cox.

Hart testified that he found no digital evidence that Lori searched for a divorce attorney. He also said that from November 2019-June 2020, while he was overseeing the missing persons investigation and search for Tylee and JJ, there was no evidence that the children were alive or that Lori was looking for them after September.

During cross-examination, Hart testified that investigators did not contact the bishop or church to verify Chad’s status for a patriarchal blessing. He also testified that there were hundreds of videos found in Lori’s iCloud accounts, which included Lori singing to and playing on the beach with the children. When asked if Lori was a good mother as shown through the texts, Hart testified, “With the exception of what happened to her children, yes.”

Cards’ skid at 8 as Wainwright returns, Tigers win 6-5 in 10

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals extended a losing steak to eight for the first time in 16 years, losing to the Detroit Tigers 6-5 on Saturday in Adam Wainwright’s return from the injured list as Akil Baddoo hit a go-ahead double in the 10th inning.

“I really wanted to end that,” Wainwright said. “It’s not all on my shoulders, I know, but when a starter goes out and puts up zeros then a team can really rally behind that, We had a lead twice to do it and let them get back into it both times.”

St. Louis is on its longest skid since nine straight losses from Sept. 7-15, 2007. At a National League-worst 10-24, the Cardinals are 14 games under .500 for the first time since ending the 1997 season at 73-89.

“I’ve been through stretches like this before, and they’re tough,” said Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado, who hit a two-run homer. “I think you just continue to go, and, hopefully, it turns. I don’t know when it’s going to turn, but you’ve just got to keep going and keep pushing. It’s hard to do, but that’s the only way.”

A squirrel got one of the day’s biggest ovations when he scampered across the infield in the bottom off the seventh.

Baddoo doubled off Giovanny Gallegos (1-2) to drive in automatic runner Jonathan Schoop.

Wainwright, starting his 19th and what he said will be his final major league season, allowed four runs and eight hits over five-plus innings struck out five and walked none. His 31 fastballs averaged 87.6 mph.

Wainwright had started the season on the injured list after hurting a groin.

“I felt great out there,” Wainwright said. “I felt in control of things and commanding the ball and commanding counts. I really can’t understand what happened in that fifth inning. I feel like I pitched a scoreless game and I gave up four runs. I really don’t know why.”

The 41-year-old right-hander pitched two-hit ball for four innings and was staked to a three-run lead, then allowed Detroit to tie the score 3-3 in the fifth on RBI singles by Eric Haase and Riley Greene around Zack McKinstry’s sacrifice fly.

Wainwright left with a 5-4 lead after Nick Maton doubled and scored on Spencer Torkelson’s single in the sixth. Torkelson tied the score with a RBI single in the seventh off Genesis Cabrera.

“He’s an unbelievable pitcher,” Torkelson said of Wainwright. “His velocity wasn’t really there, so he’s nibbling and getting the corner. I think we did a really good job of kind of waiting it out and then getting our mistakes later.”

The second-oldest active pitcher in the major leagues, Wainwright missed the first 33 games while recovering from an injury sustained when working out with the U.S. during the World Baseball Classic.

Chasen Shreve, Will Vest, Tyler Holton and José Cisnero (2-0) combined for 5 1/3 shutout innings in relief of Spencer Turnbull, who allowed five runs and seven hits in 4 2/3 innings.

“We had a lot of guys down, and the guys that we had were fresh.” Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said. “We’re going to rely on every guy that we have down there in different ways. Sometimes it’s going to be sort of normal roles and kind of easy to see when I’m going to use them. Other days it’s going to be like this where you’ve got some guys pitching in leverage that that need to do their part if you want to win the game.”

Dylan Carlson hit a three-run homer in the second and Arenado had a two-run homer in the fifth for a 4-3 lead, Arenado’s third home run this season and first in 85 plate appearances since April 12 at Colorado.

UPON FURTHER REVIEW

Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol challenged Badoo’s steal of second base in the the fifth inning, but the call stood.

St. Louis selected the contract of C Tres Barrera from Triple-A Memphis, optioned RHP Guillermo Zuñiga to Memphis and designated INF/OF Taylor Motter for assignment.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Tigers: RHP Freddy Pacheco (right elbow sprain) threw a bullpen session before Friday’s game and is throw another session next week. He was placed on the 60-day injured list on March 28.

Cardinals: INF Nolan Gorman (lower back strain) was held out of the starting lineup for the second straight game but pinch hit for Tommy Edman in the 10th and hit a game-ending groundout.

UP NEXT

Detroit will recall RHP Alex Faedo from Triple-A Toledo to make his season debut against Cardinals LHP Steven Matz (0-4, 6.39 ERA).

PBR Billings, Round 2: Teen Brady Turgeon posts 90; former world champ Cooper Davis leads

BILLINGS — Knowing he had a re-ride coming after winning a challenged buck-off of his original bull, Brady Turgeon’s eyes lit up when he saw which animal he was going to be tangoing with later on.

Importantly, the teenager from Arizona didn’t let that excitement get to his head during the second round of competition of the Professional Bull Riders Wrangler Invitational Presented by Cooper Tires at First Interstate Arena at MetraPark on Saturday night. Instead, he let it get to his hand as he held on for dear life and put up the top score of Round 2.

Turgeon posted the first 90-point ride of his PBR career by exhuming a poise well beyond his 19 years of age on Tijuana Two-Step, lasting all eight seconds to leave him sitting in third place overall entering the final day of the annual event at the Metra on Sunday.

Having only made his Unleash The Beast series debut March 31 at the PBR’s event in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Turgeon is in contention to close an epic past few weeks of bull riding — which has included a Velocity Tour win in Oakland, California, and a top-10 finish this past weekend on the Unleash The Beast stop in Nampa, Idaho — with a high-level finish in Billings.

Manoelito de Souza Junior struggles to hang onto CrossBru at the Professional Bull Riders Wrangler Invitational Presented by Cooper Tires at First Interstate Arena at MetraPark on Saturday.

Not bad for a cowboy who just recently finished high school — and he’ll have more chances to impress the crowd during Sunday’s rides, which are scheduled to start at 1:45 p.m.

“I rode it out until the very end,” Turgeon said. “I took it, for sure, because that last jump, it had me keeping that hand shut as long as I could to make that whistle.

“I mean, just being here with all the big dogs of the sport and being able to show what I got and what I can do, I mean, I’m living the dream right now. It’s awesome.”

Turgeon’s original ride had him slotted to go against Death Warrant, but he got his matchup with his second bull after his successful challenge, saying he was “stoked” to see Tijuana Two-Step’s name pop up next to his.

And in front of the 6,720 people attending in the Metra’s seats, Turgeon took over the moment and electrified fans in the arena, putting up the high score of the weekend thus far and giving his young career a signature moment.

“I just want to be consistent and do my job, ride my bulls and keep believing in myself on what I can actually accomplish in this sport,” Turgeon said. “I think it’ll be great coming in Sunday, getting that bull ride done and having the confidence going into it. I think I’ll be able to get something done.”

Chase Outlaw gets flown off of Whatever during the Professional Bull Riders Wrangler Invitational Presented by Cooper Tires at First Interstate Arena at MetraPark on Saturday.

Turgeon will have some catching up to do Sunday as two riders — former PBR World Champion Cooper Davis and Brazilian cowboy Lucas Divino — followed up qualified rides during first-round action Friday with another score Saturday.

Davis, a Texan who captured the top prize in the sport in 2016, recorded an 87 on Toasted after notching an 88.75 the previous day, giving him an event-leading aggregate score of 175.75. Divino sits three points back after successfully riding High Country Hitman for an 87 on Saturday to follow up an 85.75-point ride the previous day.

After just six qualified rides in all were recorded Friday, the humans made some leeway Saturday by notching nine scores in total.

Unleash The Beast standings leader Kaique Pacheco closed the night with an 86-point ride of Fajita after coming within a second of a qualified ride in the first round, placing him tied for seventh with Oklahoman cowboy Zane Cook, who picked up his lone score Friday.

Between Turgeon and Pacheco in the standings is a trio of athletes who picked up Saturday scores in Colten Fritzlan (86.75 on Turn Back Jack), Keyshawn Whitehorse (86.5 on Big Worm) and Eli Vastbinder (86.25 on Trump Train).

And though the veterans surrounding him are more than able to make their moves and fire their way to the top of the leaderboard when the final rounds of rides get underway, Turgeon — who noted that he’s been in similar situations before in the Junior World Finals and other rodeos — looked and sounded Saturday night as if this was just another day in the chute.

In looking to make some Metra magic happen, it may make him a dangerous man when the best of the best come to play Sunday afternoon.

“I’ve felt the pressure before, being in the top of the standings and riding the bull to win the deal,” Turgeon said. “It’s just another bull ride to me, honestly.”

Brady Turgeon cracked the 90-point barrier for the first time in his PBR career Saturday at the Metra.
