California Politics: A generational changing of the guard

A generational changing of the guard is under way in California politics.

Much of the focus in recent weeks has been on U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein, who, at 89 years old, is facing pressure to resign due to complications from a case of shingles that has kept her home in San Francisco and unable to cast votes in Washington. Even if she does not resign, her retirement at the end of next year means the race to fill her seat is poised to be the most lively and consequential contest on California’s 2024 ballot. Voters will put a new senator in power, potentially for the next generation.

But Feinstein is not the only octogenarian lion of California politics who may be calling it quits next year. If former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi also decides not to run for reelection after 36 years representing San Francisco in Washington, D.C., California will experience another political change that could endure for decades.

One person hoping to grab the torch from Pelosi is state Sen. Scott Wiener, a San Francisco Democrat who is a regular target for scathing Fox News diatribes, as Times political writer Melanie Mason reports.

“Consciously or not, Wiener is most comfortable seeking out the path of most resistance. His 13-year career in elected office can be viewed as a one-man experiment: How far can a politician go when he pushes all the boundaries at once?” Mason writes.

“The typical politician starting his career in local government would probably not take on reforming the city’s nudity law, particularly if his last name lends itself to cringeworthy puns. Or decide hours after barely winning a state Senate seat to take on a sacrosanct tenet of California housing policy in his very first bill. Or, in the face of an onslaught of death threats, continue to spar online with right-wing combatants such as Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene and Donald Trump Jr.”

If Wiener is elected, he would become the first out gay person to represent San Francisco in Congress. Mason’s profile is fun to read and full of insights about Wiener and, more broadly, about San Francisco’s unique brand of Democratic politics. Be sure to check it out: Loved or hated, Scott Wiener is a lightning rod who could make history.

The race to become California’s next governor

California Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis is an early entrant into the gubernatorial race.
(Rich Pedroncelli / Associated Press)

Speaking of political changes, Gov. Gavin Newsom is just four months into his second (and final) term, but the 2026 race to succeed him has already begun. Democratic Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis announced this week that she is running for governor, laying down an early marker for what is likely to be a vigorous campaign, reports Times political writer Seema Mehta.

Opening a gubernatorial campaign committee allows Kounalakis to start raising money and could help her become more familiar to voters. It also mirrors Newsom’s decision to enter the 2018 governor’s race three years early — probably not a coincidence since the pair enjoy a good relationship and are advised by the same political consultants.

The race to lead the world’s fifth-largest economy is expected to draw many contenders. Democrat Betty Yee, the former state controller, also said she intends to run, though she has not yet formally launched a campaign. If successful, either would become the first woman elected to lead the state.

Currently in her second term as lieutenant governor, Kounalakis previously was the U.S. ambassador to Hungary during the Obama administration. Before that, she led a Sacramento housing development company founded by her father.

Kounalakis enters the gubernatorial race with three substantial assets, writes Times columnist George Skelton:

But, Skelton says, Kounalakis has been relatively quiet as lieutenant governor, which is a surprise “given her energy, tenacity and feisty nature.”

The highest-ranking Latino in Congress

(Irfan Khan / Los Angeles Times)

Rep. Pete Aguilar of Redlands was already a rising star in the Democratic Party and climbing up the leadership ranks when the U.S. Capitol was attacked on Jan. 6, 2021.

That infamous day supercharged his ascent, writes Times reporter Benjamin Oreskes, first with an appointment to the House committee formed to investigate the attack on the Capitol and then with his election as chair of the House Democratic Caucus. Aguilar is now the third-highest-ranking Democrat in the House of Representatives.

In this deeply reported profile, Oreskes reveals how the former Redlands mayor became Congress’ highest-ranking Latino. It stems from why then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi chose him for the Jan. 6 committee, which led one of the highest-profile inquiries since the Watergate scandal took down President Nixon. Friends and foes alike note his tranquil demeanor, openness to differing viewpoints, and reputation for offering counsel to colleagues expressing complaints, concerns and compliments.

Lula says that NBD can become the ‘bank of the Global South’ and criticizes dollar hegemony

The President of the New Development Bank (NBD), Dilma Rousseff, received President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (Workers’ Party) for her inauguration ceremony at the head of the bank. This was the first activity on the president’s official agenda during his state visit to China.

Lula and Dilma had a closed-door meeting with directors of the financial institution before starting the ceremony. First to speak, Rousseff, who was one of the founders of the Brics bank, spoke about the need to expand the institution’s capacity.

“It is essential to expand the bank’s reach and impact. On the one hand, we are expanding the number of member countries, strengthening our cooperation platform. On the other hand, we are financing key projects for development. From sanitation to social and digital infrastructure.”

The New Development Bank was created in 2014, at the sixth BRICS conference in Fortaleza (Brazil), and has an authorized initial capital of US$ 100 billion. In October 2022, the bank defined that it will lend US$ 30 billion to support general growth and sustainable development projects in the countries it finances over a period of five years.

Forty percent of these loans must go to climate change mitigation and adaptation projects. Other important areas are clean energy, transport infrastructure, urban development, water and sanitation management, and social and digital infrastructure. Around 30% of the loans will be made using the currencies of the block’s member countries.

President Lula read a speech for about 15 minutes, in which he stated that the “New Development Bank meets all the conditions to become the great bank of the Global South. For the first time, a development bank with a global reach is established without participation of developed countries in its initial phase. Free, therefore, from the shackles of conditionalities imposed by traditional institutions on emerging economies. And more: with the possibility of financing projects in local currency.”

After reading the speech, Lula took off his glasses and addressed the audience for another 15 minutes, this time without a script. The president said that the bank emerged from the dialogue he maintained with the leaders of Russia, China, India and South Africa prior to the G7 meetings, to which the presidents of emerging economies were invited.

In this context, Lula was applauded when he criticized the hegemony of the dollar in the world economy and the role of international financial institutions commanded by the Global North.

“A development bank has to have more functions and not just one. I ask myself every night why all countries are obliged to do their trade backed by the dollar? Why can’t we carry out trade backed by our currency?” said Lula. “A president cannot govern with a knife around his neck,” he defended, referring to the conditionalities imposed by institutions such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Expectations regarding the State visit

Lula brought to China an important delegation with nineteen federal deputies, seven senators – including the president of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco -, five governors and seven ministers, among them Fernando Haddad, from Finance, Marina Silva, from the Environment and Paulo Teixeira, from Agrarian Development and Family Farming. Representatives of labor union centrals and from the Brazilian Landless Workers’ Movement (MST) are also part of the delegation.

One of the entourage members was federal deputy Jandira Feghali (Communist Party of Brazil – RJ), who in conversation with Brasil de Fato stated that the trip is essential for the country’s reindustrialization goals.

“Brazil needs to generate a national development project, Brazil needs to add value to its industrialization, it needs to generate jobs. So, Brazil cannot avoid major negotiations and the construction of agreements with a country like China, which is at the forefront on the frontier of innovation, science and technology”, said the deputy.

After the agenda at the New Development Bank headquarters, Lula went with part of the delegation to Huawei’s innovation center in Shanghai. Among those present was the governor of Bahia, Jerônimo Rodrigues (Workers’ Party), who has been in China since the end of March, when the state visit was canceled due to the president’s mild pneumonia.

Last week, the governor signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the company to expand agreements between the state and the tech giant in areas ranging from education to public safety.

Lula also met with executives from BYD, the electric car manufacturer that even surpassed Tesla in sales last year, and with the China Communications Construction Company (CCCC), a Chinese state-owned infrastructure giant.

On Friday (14), Lula and his ministerial team will meet with the president of the state-owned energy company State Grid, Zhang Zhigang, one of the companies that will likely be part of the major agreements that will be signed.

The agenda continues with a meeting with the President of the National People’s Congress of China, Zhao Leji, in the Great Hall of the People, and a floral offering ceremony at the Monument to the People’s Heroes, in Tiananmen Square.

In the afternoon, before the expected meeting with his peer Xi Jinping, Lula will also meet with representatives of the All-China Federation of Trade Unions and with the Chinese Prime Minister, Li Qiang.

Match report: Aston Villa 2-3 Manchester United – Man United News And Transfer News | The Peoples Person

Manchester United come from behind to beat Villa 3-2 this evening to extend their lead on top of the table.

It was a tough game, with United coming from behind twice and Villa rattling the woodwork twice.

United were only in the lead for about thirty seconds of the entire match, but it was enough to take all three points back to Manchester.

The first chance fell for United’s captain Katie Zelem, but her shot went straight into the arms of Hannah Hampton.

It was Villa who made the breakthrough though from a corner, Rachel Daly with a powerful header into the top corner.

United had a few attempts to get back into it, but their chances lacked conviction, until eight minutes later.

Batlle played a superb ball picking out the onrushing Galton, who came sliding in at the far post to get the equaliser.

It was end to end stuff as both teams showed an attacking threat. A corner for United caused Villa problems as they cleared it off the line straight to Galton, who smashed it goalwards, but it was well saved by Hampton.

Villa nosed ahead again though as Pacheco delivered to Daly, whose sublime first-time strike nestled into the far corner of the net.

Hayley Ladd thought she’d equalised just before half-time but the goal was ruled out for a foul on Hampton, although it looked like she fell over her own player.

Villa had a chance to make it three in stoppage time of the first half when they were given a free kick by the corner flag, but luckily Nobbs’ shot was just wide.

In the second half United played with a sense of urgency. Parris went on the attack but her cross went behind for a goal kick.

Moments later, Russo had a chance but her header floated over the bar.

United were giving Villa too much space, especially Daly, and she got a shot off again that rattled the crossbar.

It was the wake-up call the Reds needed and at the other end Parris headed in a cross from Blundell. She hurried her team back to the centre, she could sense that there were more goals in this game with just under half an hour to play.

At the other end, Galton was having to get stuck in a lot tonight, helping out her defence as she cleared away another Villa corner.

United switched their entire attack in what was a bold and risky move from Skinner. It almost paid off as Thomas found herself onside and in loads of space, but it was like she hadn’t decided whether to square it or slot it into the far corner and it rolled out for a goal kick.

Toone had the next chance but her last involvement in the game was a shot that Hampton clung onto well.

Deep into injury time with United’s title hopes fading, they won a free-kick. It was a superb delivery by Katie Zelem and substitute Millie Turner rose the highest. Hampton could only watch as her looping header found the corner!

Turner peeled away for a knee-slide celebration, her teammates piling on top of her. The bench and back room staff erupted – complete euphoria for the visitors as they clinched the three points at the death.

The team celebrated with the away supporters at the final whistle. It was huge three points to keep their dream of making history alive.

Team: Earps, Mannion (Turner 87), Batlle, Le Tissier, Blundell, Zelem, Toone (Boe Risa 91), Ladd, Russo (Williams 77), Parris (Thomas 77), Galton (Garcia 77)

How To File Taxes As An Amazon Vendor | Taxfyle

How To File Taxes As An Amazon Vendor

Whether your business operates on Amazon full-time or you’re using it to grow your business, selling products on the marketplace can help you generate the revenue and income you desire. However, what happens when tax season rolls around?

By attracting customers from across the country to your growing business, you may wonder what implications lie in store. Particularly once tax season rolls around. If you are wondering what you should know regarding taxes as an Amazon vendor or are hesitant to join the marketplace because you’re not informed about the tax implications of being an Amazon vendor, don’t worry. This blog post can help you understand what you need to know about filing taxes as an Amazon vendor.

How does sales tax apply to Amazon vendors?

In addition to reporting earnings to the IRS at the end of the year, most retailers, including Amazon sellers, must collect and submit sales taxes. Fulfillment by Amazon sales taxes varies depending on the transaction and where it occurred. The sales tax rate is determined by the state and city where the customer resides, as well as the location of the item being shipped from, and can range from 0% to 13%.

When does an Amazon seller need to charge sales tax?

Because you’re opening your customer base to individuals across the United States, you have to consider sales tax implications. Sales tax laws are frequently influenced by various factors, including state and local regulations. Consider whether you have a sales tax or use tax nexus in a particular state. A sales tax nexus is a legal term for an online retailer who makes enough sales or has a physical presence in a specific region.

Small businesses typically need to meet a specific minimum sales threshold in the region to qualify as a sales tax nexus. If you have a physical presence, employ people, or keep inventory in a state, you almost certainly have a sales tax nexus in that state. Once you’ve met these requirements, you must apply for a sales tax permit and file a sales tax return with the state.

Amazon FBA sellers may have a tax nexus in states where Amazon fulfillment centers are located:

Regardless of which state you conduct your sales in, you need to understand what is and isn’t taxable in that area. Some states have different laws regulating sales tax rates for goods, where necessities like groceries and clothing do not receive a sales tax. Therefore, you must track your sales and taxes accurately to avoid any possible penalties.

How to collect taxes as an Amazon vendor

Before you collect sales taxes, the first step you should make sure you’ve completed is registering with the state’s tax authority and figuring out how often you should file and pay taxes. Not being aware of the implications is no excuse when it comes to potential audits, and this registration is one of the best ways to ensure you maintain compliance. After all, we don’t want any tax collectors knocking on your door wondering why there are discrepancies with your books.

Luckily, Amazon does some of the work for you by automatically collecting sales taxes for you and compiling the information within your sales reports. However, when posting products on your page, you should fill out the appropriate tax codes to ensure everything is collected correctly. That way, you avoid under-collecting or over-collecting taxes on the goods you’re selling.

Here are links to state tax authorities in the most populated states in the U.S.:

How to report and file taxes as an Amazon vendor

Sales and business taxes are two different things. While sales taxes apply to revenue, income taxes are based on the profits you collect and are paid to the federal government through the IRS and relevant states.

When setting up your Amazon account, you must ensure it’s a professional account so that Amazon automatically processes sales taxes for you. Otherwise, you’ll find yourself consumed with paperwork come tax season. You are still responsible for tracking and reporting your sales taxes and correcting any discrepancies. Reports containing your sales and sales tax information can be found in your Amazon Seller Central account.

Amazon will send you a 1099-K tax form if your company makes at least $20,000 in sales and 200 transactions per year. The 1099-K is used in tax preparation and contains tax information about payments and transactions. Even if you have yet to receive the form, you are still required by law to ensure that your company pays the correct amount.

Some other forms you should keep in mind when your taxes are concerned are:

California’s Air Board Votes to Scale Down Fleets of Diesel Trucks

The California Air Resources Board approved an ambitious plan today to phase out its diesel truck fleets, from semi-trucks to delivery vans and garbage trucks, despite the opposition of industry groups who said the plan would be near impossible for them to enact.

It is the air board’s latest regulation geared at cleaning up toxic air quality and fighting climate change, and comes a day after the same body passed first-in-the-nation regulations on diesel trains.

The state’s powerful air regulators have been California’s spearpoint in the fight against climate change in recent years, as they’ve charted an ambitious path to siphon down the state’s use of planet-warming fossil fuels over the next two decades, including banning the sale of new gasoline cars after 2035 and forcing the electrification of most of the state’s transportation sector, the largest contributor of carbon emissions in California.

Gideon Kracov, a board member and environmental lawyer from Los Angeles, framed the clean-fleet policy as an ambitious capstone for an agency that has passed no shortage of first-in-the-nation climate rules, calling it the “end of the beginning.”

Board Chair Liane Randolph said in a statement that California has the technology to build a zero-emission future now and called the new regulations a “reasonable” and “innovative” approach to “clean up the vehicles on our roads and ensure that Californians have the clean air that they want and deserve.”

While these 1.8 million trucks represent a tiny fraction of vehicles on the road at just 6%, they are responsible for more than a quarter of the transportation sector’s greenhouse gas pollution (PDF).

The state’s new regulations are meant to accelerate the use of zero-emission medium- and heavy-duty trucks in California within the next two decades and will require the electrification by 2035 of highly polluting drayage trucks, which transport shipping containers from ports and rail yards.

Board member Tania Pacheco-Werner, who is co-director of a health policy institute at Fresno State, framed the policy as an issue of environmental justice.“Even the air is unequal,” she said. “Wealthier communities have more resources, green space and built environment to protect them from the harmful impacts of dirty trucks. Others do not. And we see it in differences in emergency visits and hospitalizations due to respiratory issues for people who live closer to freeways and truck traffic.

She said the policy will improve their lives “first and foremost, and we should all be very proud of that.”

During board hearings that spanned two days, industry groups and government agencies fiercely pushed back on the policies, arguing they are too onerous and would drive up costs for Californians.

Chris Shimoda, senior vice president of government affairs for the California Trucking Association, told KQED that the state doesn’t have enough charging infrastructure for electric trucks, particularly public charging stations, adding that “nearly 100% of our membership says [the rules] cannot be accomplished.”

Jim Verburg of the Western States Petroleum Association told the board that if businesses couldn’t comply it would “compromise the delivery of essential goods and services to Californians or compromise the state’s economy.”
