Grab beefs up PhilSys pact

Grab Philippines announced on Friday that it is expediting the Philippine Identification System registration of its partner riders to provide them easy access to government services and benefits.

The ride-hailing firm disclosed that it tapped the state-run Philippine Statistics Authority and the Department of Trade and Industry to help all their delivery riders secure their PhilSys identification.

Grab Philippines director for Public Affairs Atty. Sherielysse Bonifacio said the move is part of the company’s efforts to “help the government in its national ID registration drive as it recognizes how this can benefit our delivery partners.”

“The national IDs provide our delivery partners with more than just a reliable means of identification; it will also make it easier for them to avail of government services and benefits,” Bonifacio said.

Earlier this week, DTI and PSA launched the Institutional PhilSys Registration of Delivery-Riders —  a program aimed at prioritizing the registration of beneficiaries of various government social protection program.

“To realize the full potential of PhilSys, I highly encourage our partners to also integrate with Philsys and take advantage of the various authentication services that PSA will be developing. This will allow our delivery riders to enjoy the conveniences and benefits of having a digital ID,” deputy National Statistician Fred Sollesta said.

Citing Grab’s position as a super app developer, Bonifacio said supporting PhilSys will also “contribute to the growth of the Philippine digital economy.”

Meanwhile, DTI assistant secretary Mary Jean Pacheco pointed out that the rollout of the national ID system is one of the critical components in the DTI’s e-commerce roadmap.

Included among the strategies in the DTI e-commerce roadmap is the hastening of e-government initiatives across the e-commerce system.

The two priorities listed under the strategy are to “promote streamlining and automation in government and a pleasant user experience on online public services” and to “fast-track the implementation of the Philippine Identification System.”

As of 31 March, about 77.97 million Filipinos, or 84.7 percent of PSA’s total target, have registered for their national IDs.

10 Times The Justice League Was In Over Its Head

The Justice League is a force to be reckoned with, an assemblage of the most powerful superheroes on Earth. Together, the team has faced threats like no others, battling supervillains, gods, and otherworldly horrors. The League has defeated them all, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy. The League is stacked with talent, but the threats they face can be even worse.

The Justice League, by its very definition, takes on enemies that no other hero or team of heroes can face, like Darkseid or the Anti-Monitor. Many situations have seen them in over their head, before they figure out a way to turn the tide and win. There’s a reason they’re the best, after all.

10 Crisis On Infinite Earths

DC’s had many great crossovers, but none can match the scope of Crisis on Infinite Earths, by writer Marv Wolfman and artist/co-plotter George Pérez and Jerry Ordway. The Anti-Monitor’s attack on reality destroyed countless universes, and no force was able to stop him. The heroes of Earth-1, Earth-2, Earth-S, and Earth-X found themselves against an opponent who could defeat them easily.

Every time it seemed like they had made a plan to beat the Anti-Monitor, he was able to overcome it or trick them into thinking they won. It was a game of chess, where the Anti-Monitor was able to counter everything and raise the stakes with each move. It finally came down to a desperate battle that finally destroyed the Anti-Monitor.

9 Final Night

The Justice League can fight nearly any enemy, but there are some things that even their powers can’t help them with. Final Night, by writer Karl Kessel and artist Stuart Immonen, put the Justice League and the heroes of Earth into that situation. A Sun-Eater came to the Sol System and lived up to its name, eating the sun and dooming life on Earth.

The League and their allies could do nearly do anything, but reigniting the sun was beyond them. Nothing they did worked, and the team eventually resigned themselves to failure. However, Hal Jordan, then the villainous Parallax, sacrificed his life to reignite the sun.

8 JLA: The Nail

JLA: The Nail, by writer/artist Alan Davis, is an Elseworlds classic that took place on a world where the Kents never found baby Kal-El. The Justice League, sans Superman, found themselves in a terrible situation, as a secret enemy turned the public against them before picking them off one at a time. The team’s attempts to figure out what was going on were met with failure.

The master manipulator was revealed to be Jimmy Olsen. Experimented on by Lex Luthor and spliced with Kryptonian DNA found at the crash site of Kal-El’s rocket, Olsen finally faced off against the League at the Kent farm. They were saved by Kal-El, who had been found by Amish farmers. Soon after, Kal joined the Justice League as Superman.

7 Final Crisis

Final Crisis stands tall among the best DC comics of the 2000s. Written by Grant Morrison with art by J.G. Jones, Carlos Pacheco, and Doug Mahnke, the Justice League were blindsided by Darkseid and his servants working from the shadows. From the death of Orion to Hal Jordan being arrested by the Alpha Lanterns to Batman disappearing and Lois Lane being heavily injured, sidelining Superman, the League was inundated with losses.

With the League at their lowest, Darkseid made his move. Uploading the Anti-Life Equation to the Internet, he took over the half the planet in seconds. The heroes were on the back foot, until the returns of Superman, Hal, Wally West, Barry Allen, and more, turning the tide against Darkseid when all hope was lost.

6 JLA: New World Order

DC Unlimited has amazing Justice League stories, including the stellar JLA: New World Order, by writer Grant Morrison and artist Howard Porter. When a mysterious new group of heroes hit the scene called the Hyperclan, the League was suspicious. The Hyperclan gained public esteem by their showy heroics, which causes the League to distrust them even more.

The Hyperclan soon showed their real spots, attacking and taking the League hostage. They were White Martians the whole time and their plan was simple: soften up the Earth for invasion. It all would have worked if Batman hadn’t escaped, figured out their secret, and broke his friends free, with the help of Martian Manhunter.

5 Dark Knights: Death Metal

The Justice League has fought some brutal battles, with the fight against Perpetua and the Batman Who Laughs in Dark Knights: Death Metal, by writer Scott Snyder and artist Greg Capullo, almost hopeless. Perpetua had already defeated the League, as the people of the universe had chosen Doom. Unleashing the Dark Multiverse on the Earth, she was the undisputed ruler of all.

The heroes were completely demoralized and defeated, as Perpetua and the Batman Who Laughs held all the cards. The only one who was unbowed was Wonder Woman, secretly preparing to rebel against the world’s new rulers while she ostensibly worked for them. She rallied the remaining heroes and was able to turn the tide.

4 Infinite Crisis

Justice League stories are fill of twists, but one had dire consequences for the team. Infinite Crisis, by writer Geoff Johns and artists Phil Jimenez, George Pérez, Ivan Reis, and Jerry Ordway, revealed that Alexander Luthor, Superboy-Prime, and the Superman and Lois Lane of Earth-2 were returning to “fix” the DC Universe. While Superman was genuine, Prime and Luthor had their own plans.

Prime and Luthor had been coming to the DC Universe in secret for a while, manipulating events in their favor. The Justice League itself was at its lowest ebb, the team torn apart by internal squabbles. They came back together and triumphed, but the odds were completely against them.

3 Justice League America #69

Doomsday’s attack eventually cost Superman his life, as he gave his all to stop the monster before it got to Metropolis. The Justice League lent a hand in Justice League America #69, by writer/artist Dan Jurgens, but was stomped by the monster. There was a simple reason for this: the League was extremely underpowered.

Consisting of Blue Beetle, Booster Gold, Maxima, Guy Gardner, Fire, Ice, and Bloodwynd, Doomsday ran through them like they weren’t even there. The beast overpowered them in every way. While it was noble of them to try, they had no chance of even making a dent.

2 JLA: Rock Of Ages

The Justice League often surprises fans, but few stories can match JLA: Rock of Ages, by writer Grant Morrison and artists Howard Porter and Gary Frank. The story pit the team against Lex Luthor’s new Injustice Gang – the Joker, Circe, Ocean Master, Mirror Master, and Doctor Light. Lex had an ace in the hole, though, a powerful artifact called the Worlogog.

The Gang outsmarted the League at every turn, but the heroes triumphed. However, a jaunt to the future by Flash, Green Lantern, and Aquaman revealed that the League’s destruction of the Worlogog doomed the world, allowing Darkseid to take over. The trio was able to get back to the present and save the Worlogog right in time, but things were close.

1 JLA: World War III

The Justice League has faced the terrible threats, but few could match Mageddon. The battle against the Anti-God was chronicled in JLA: World War III, by writer Grant Morrison and artist Howard Porter. Mageddon was a weapon of the Third World, a universal destroyer created by the Old Gods. Unleashed from the Underverse, it made its inexorable way to the Earth.

Fomenting destruction in every destruction, it didn’t help that Luthor’s new Injustice Gang was spurred on to attack by Mageddon’s influence. The League defeated the Gang, but Mageddon proved to be too much for them. However, they made a desperate plan, using the Purple Ray to give everyone on Earth powers. The combined powers of every human were able to drive Mageddon back, saving all creation.

The possible return of a forbidden activity

The law that turned El Salvador into the first country in the world to prohibit metal mining is threatened by supposed attempts to reinstate this practice. Those who want to reverse the rule disdain the social battles that cost the lives of those who got this activity banned.

Luis Beatón

In a nation with a dense population concentration given its small size, the concern is greater as its water is at risk, which is why many protests today have the slogan, “Gold is not taken, water is”; a warning to put an end to the attempts to convict thousands of people.

Concerns are rising because of the alleged plans to revive metal mining, something prohibited by law on 29 March 2017, and which turned El Salvador into the first country to forbid extraction for environmental reasons. Pedro Cabezas, director of the Central American Alliance Against Mining (Acafremin), said that among the numerous problems the country is facing, including deforestation, water stress and desertification, there are signs that some sectors connected to the Salvadoran government are making efforts to reverse the law.

“The statements from these people are serious, when they say that aquatic life in some rivers no longer exists. In this way we can feel the country’s ecological vulnerability and the depletion of the environment, and to have mining as a key industry on top of that would be disastrous”, Cabezas said to several local media establishments.

Quoting cases such as that which occurred in the San Sebastian mine, in the town of Santa Rosa de Lima, in the province of La Union, which is still generating acidic drainage and ending aquatic life. There exists a further “15 passive miners identified by the Environment Ministry (Marn) who must technically close and have not yet done so”.

Another threat is the Cerro Blanco (Guatemala) mine, which, despite not functioning, is producing water runoffs with high levels of arsenic, impacting the Ostua River basin.

This is part of the Guija Lake basin (Metapan) that feeds the river Lempa, which provides water to two-thirds of the population of El Salvador before discharging its flow into the Pacific Ocean.

The situation, according to opposition, is complicated by the Intergovernmental Forum on Mining, Minerals, Metals and Sustainable Development, as they have identified it as a ‘front’ organisation for mining companies; the same companies which want to reverse the ban on murderous mining.

In Cabezas’ opinion, reopening the debate on mining would be a disaster, not just for the environment, but also for society, as many communities and populations would be opposed to this and ready to fight so it did not happen.

In recent years, there have been evident plans from those who intend to return to exploiting mining and opening up the country’s lands to companies from Canada and the United States, among others, interested in extracting the resources from the subsoil despite the cost to the lives of many Salvadorans.

The criminalisation of protesting

With regards to the criminalisation of the people defending and the application of the regime of exception, there is no better example than the detention of activists and community leaders at the beginning of this year through absurd arguments of “crimes” during the war in the 80s. The cases of community leaders Miguel Ángel Gámez, Alejandro Laínez García and Pedro Antonio Rivas, the directors of the Santa Marta Association for Economic and Social Development, Teodoro Antonio Pacheco (director) and Saúl Agustín Rivas, show the attempts to silence the voices of protest.

Those arrested were accused of a difficult-to-prove crime which is now being used to get them out of protests.

Luis Parada, is a Salvadoran lawyer who won the case for the Canadian Pacific Rim mining and prevented it contaminating the Lempa river.

He has said that “it is more than obvious that the arrest and prolonged detention of the environmental leaders of Santa Marta (former fighters of FMLN) is not in the name of justice. It is part of President Nayib Bukele’s macabre plan to reopen El Salvador to the devastating mining of metals”.

Nevertheless, Rodolfo Delgado, El Salvador’s attorney general, said that the detentions are related to an alleged murder committed more than 30 years ago during the brutal civil war. However, these accusations, according to the Mexican La Jornada newspaper, have political ends. In this regard, 250 social and civil organisations from 29 countries have highlighted that nobody is concerned in the Salvadoran government with prosecuting the soldiers responsible for dozens of human rights violations committed during the civil war, even in Santa Marta itself, and those that are occurring now with thousands of presumably innocent people accused of being gang members.

These groups highlight “the doubts about whether the attorney general’s true motivation is an attempt to silence those defending the water, especially bearing in mind the government’s current crusade to criminalise, persecute and demobilise their political opponents”.

According to the environmentalists, the government of El Salvador is collaborating with transnational mining companies, with a view to cancelling the law prohibiting mining.

The future of the water

Reports made by governments in previous years indicate that the waters flowing through the region of Cabañas, which supposedly want to be opened up to mineral exploitation, are essential to the country.

They are important in terms of supplying water, both for human use as well as for farming and energy generation. Reports by the Environmental Ministry attest that the quality of water in this area is better than in the rest of the country and, if it is not protected, it will end up joining the high percentage of national rivers whose flows cannot be treated to become water that can be used.

It is well known that the processes of extracting gold, one of the aspirations of mining, require the mine’s remains to be treated with large quantities of water and this process often leads to a poisonous mixture being released into the supply, which ends up with very high levels of elements such as arsenic, mercury, lead, cadmium and iron being detected.

Einstein

曲 Composed by Diana Wang 王詩安, Khalil Fong 方大同
詞 Lyrics by Luke”B.T.”Tsui 崔惟楷

The best new restaurants in the world: 2023 Hot List | CN Traveller

At first glance, Alluma may seem like an outlier on the Rue St. Maur stretch of the 11th arrondissement, known most for its natural wine bars and street food joints. But this elegant neo-bistro from the Israeli chef Lirin Tal and his wife Noa has deservedly found its crowd with a vibrant ode to Levantine flavours – on and off the plate. With the help of Name Architecture, the couple brightened up an 860-square-foot former Moroccan restaurant, transforming it with marble tabletops, velvet green banquettes, and its most defining feature, an alabaster white wooden moucharabieh wall that spans the dining room. The most colourful elements come from Tal’s seasonal five-course tasting menu, best experienced at dinner, which might include: sea bream crudo with figs and crushed pistachios, dressed with buttermilk and fig leaf oil; charcoaled celeriac served with black lentils and labneh; and grapefruit-Arak sorbet topped with sumac meringue. Don’t skip out on the wine pairing that showcases an exquisite, mostly organic selection from France, Spain, Italy, and Armenia. Lindsey Tramuta

The Paris region’s most hotly-anticipated opening of the last year can actually be found 25 miles south of the capital in the small village of Saint-Vrain. It’s where the Australian chefs James Henry and Shaun Kelly, known for their influence in the Parisian bistronomy movement, transformed the former stables of a 19th-century private estate into a working farm, restaurant, and guesthouse driven by the principles of regenerative agriculture. More than one hundred varieties of heirloom fruits, vegetables, and herbs make their way into Henry’s vibrant cooking after being meticulously nurtured by Kelly, who has taken on the role of lead farmer. It’s all served on antiqued dishware in a sprawling dining room with exposed beams and floor-to-ceiling windows that keep the garden within close view. The experience doesn’t begin or end on the plate, however: guests are strongly encouraged to take their apéritif or digestive stroll through the farm. LT

Jun’sbehlah barbhaya/Jun’s

Jun’s – Dubai

In some ways, chef Kelvin Cheung embodies the Dubai dream: He touched down in the city after stints at celebrated restaurants across Canada, the U.S., Belgium, and India, bringing with him the global sensibility with which the UAE has become synonymous. His menu at Jun’s reflects his cosmopolitan outlook, packing flavours he’s picked up along the way into sophisticated spins on comfort fare: tempura za’atar chaat with tamarind, yoghurt, and avocado; red-hot chicken karaage with waffles; lobster pani puri with achaar; lamb koobideh tsukune; and rainbow heirloom carrots with smoked labneh and soy honey butter. But the real star here may well be Cheung himself, a natural raconteur who makes an effort to come by each table to share the spellbinding stories behind each dish. When the weather is nice, grab a seat on the patio in the shadow of the sparkling spire of the Burj Khalifa—it doesn’t get more Dubai than that. Sarah Khan

Ashley Wilson/La Semilla
La SemillaLa Semilla

La Semilla – Atlanta

This little tropical enclave in Atlanta’s Reynoldstown neighbourhood serves up some of the tastiest plant-based dishes in the city. Married duo Sophia Marchese and chef Reid Trapani filled the space with whimsical personal touches, such as vintage decor and hand-painted banana leaves on the bar’s soffit. Marchese oversees the beverage program with drinks befitting the locale, like the agricole fashioned with rum, mole bitters and Angostura. Trapani’s dishes pay homage to Marchese’s Cuban heritage and his travels to Latin America. There’s a vegan Cubano with house-made seitan and jackfruit lechón, but the star of the menu may be the bistec de palomilla made with local lion’s-mane mushrooms. Lia Picard

Mak-‘amham/Cafe Ohlone – Berkeley, California

The latest iteration of Cafe Ohlone, a restaurant dedicated to Indigenous foods from Vincent Medina (East Bay Chochenyo) and Louis Trevino (Carmel Valley Rumsen), ‘ottoy serves diners in a space at the Hearst Museum at the University of California, Berkeley, a building formerly named after the anthropologist who falsely declared the Ohlone tribe extinct. In Chochenyo, the language of the Ohlone people, ‘oṭṭoy means to heal, and every aspect of the restaurant is dedicated to that goal, from shell mounds representative of the tribal gravesites raided by UC researchers to a menu that marries traditional Ohlone dishes like tan oak acorn bisque or clams and mussels with contemporary-feeling offerings like a chia and hazelnut pudding. “This is part of our living culture,” Medina says of the restaurant’s mix of celebration and acknowledgement, of old and new. “We are fully embracing all our lived experiences.” Eve Batey

Koji Club – Boston

Nothing can stop a Bostonian with a plan. When lockdown first foiled Alyssa Mikiko DiPasquale’s endeavour to open the greatest sake bar the city had ever seen, she transitioned her business model to a subscription service paired with Zoom education sessions – which sold out consistently. And when supply chain woes across the hemisphere thwarted her ability to import Japan’s most interesting spirits, she used her distinguished reputation as longtime manager and marketer of iconic omakase spot O Ya to get the right people on the phone and the right sakes into her hands. Nevertheless, she persisted, opening an intimate 250-square-foot bar space last year that is as cosy and authentic as anything you would find in Japan. Koji Club’s bartenders offer an encyclopedic knowledge of sake’s multiverse, and the menu breaks down the spirit’s diversity from mild to wild, using cheeky descriptions such as, “Like walking through a temple in Kyoto wearing Le Labo’s Santal 33.” By the end of each night, you’re brushing elbows with strangers, making friends, and, whether you’re already a sake aficionado or just looking for something to do for date night, walking away with something you didn’t know before you went. “This city lost half of its Japanese restaurants during the pandemic,” said DiPasquale recently. “If I can just help people learn about and appreciate sake, that will be a job well done.” Todd Plummer

Her Place Supper Club – Philadelphia

Back when she was a student at the University of Pennsylvania, Amanda Shulman threw elaborate dinner parties for classmates. Eight years later and with stints at Vetri Cucina and Momofuku Ko under her belt, the chef channels a similar intimate, electric vibe at Her Place, a supper club serving a family-style tasting menu in Center City, Philadelphia. Inside the snug dining room, abuzz with strangers socializing to a soundtrack of 80s hits, Shulman pops in from the open kitchen to describe dishes like chicken liver and apple butter-spiked gougers, lemony hand-rolled pasta, and paper-thin slices of roast beef served with a tangle of crispy fries. At the end of the meal, she floats through the dining room, like any good host, sending off her guests with a tray of warm chocolate chip cookies. Regan Stephens

Mi Compa Chava – Mexico City

Seafood is a hangover cure in Mexico, and almost everyone eating here is intent on either fixing last night’s damage or getting a head start on creating today’s. On the sidewalk, crowds of locals and tourists alike line up for avid fisherman Salvador Orozco’s creative takes on Sinaloa and Baja seafood. The artful aguachile (raw shrimp in spicy sauce) rightfully lands on almost every table, as do selections from the cold bar – which come with house-made hot sauces. Anything from the raw half of the menu is a sure bet, though cooked dishes like the fish birria quesadilla can help fill out a meal. The airy space, bright-yellow metal tables, and open kitchen running the length of the room support chef Salvador Orozco’s vision of a Mexican coastal town seafood cart, while a plant-laden parklet holds outdoor tables. On the sidewalk, crowds of locals and tourists alike line up for the avid fisherman’s creative takes on Sinaloa and Baja seafood. Naomi Tomky

Foresta – Quito

The biophilic interiors of famed Ecuadoran chef Rodrigo Pacheco’s conservation-focussed restaurant give meals there the feeling of a dinner party in a chic greenhouse. Chefs prepare grilled prawns with spicy watermelon on massive volcanic-rock cooktops, and use ingredients like figs sourced from local Indigenous communities, making the experience even sweeter. Katherine Gallardo

Lasai – Rio de Janiero

Despite being just a few metres from its original address in the Botafogo neighbourhood, the 2.0 version of Lasai bares little resemblance to its former concept. Down from 45 seats, chef Rafa Costa e Silva’s awarded restaurant now serves only ten diners per service, offering a much more unique experience. A modern, intimate room with no windows, a marble L-shaped counter, and dramatic lighting has replaced the airy old colonial townhouse. The only similarity is Costa e Silva’s vegetable-oriented dishes, cooked chiefly with ingredients he grows on his two nearby farms. The change has helped him perfect the service (led by his wife Malena Cardiel) and “thicken the broth” of his minimalist cuisine, relying on more exclusive ingredients, such as sea urchin and ikura. Lasai has consolidated as a top-notch destination in the Marvellous City. Rafael Tonon

Kōnā Corner – Buenos Aires

Kōnā Corner, a 76-seat restaurant in Buenos Aires, is the ultimate expression of acclaimed Argentinian chef Narda Lepes’ lifelong passion for Japanese cuisine and culture. Located in the leafy Belgrano neighbourhood, the restaurant blends traditional Japanese dishes with a modern twist. Executive Chef Pablo Chinen and Head Chef Fernando Kanashiro lead the open kitchen in creating an array of dishes that are faithful to Japanese roots and techniques, while presented in a contemporary style. Among the standouts are agedashi tofu, Hanetsuki gyoza, tonkatsu, miso beurre blanc trou, and fukusai – vegetables prepared five ways: raw, cooked, pickled, and nukazuke. Kōnā Corner’s minimalist design, hidden lighting, and custom-made dinnerware have all been meticulously considered, creating an elegant and inviting ambience. The sleek upstairs bar, masterminded by renowned bartender Inés de los Santos, is a destination in itself, especially when the karaoke room opens, making it the perfect spot for a memorable sake-induced night out. Can a dish inspired by a Spanish recipe using Japanese ingredients still be considered Thai? For chef Prin Polsuk, one of Bangkok’s most acclaimed Thai chefs, it most certainly can. At his latest restaurant, a pared-back, pint-size dining room at the base of Bangkok’s landmark King Power Mahanakhon tower, he draws inspiration from King Chulalongkorn’s 1897 journey around Europe and the foreign ingredients and cooking techniques he subsequently added to the royal cookbooks. With the help of Spanish chef Pepe Dasí Jiménez, Polsuk creates seasonal 12-course menus that blur culinary borders. Expect plates such as southern Thai pork belly with coffee kombucha, jellied nam pla waan fish sauce with strawberry and jamón-like salted tuna with honey-pickled melon. Chris Schalkx

Swallow Tainan – Taiwan

There are numerous third-wave coffee shops in southern Taiwan‘s laid-back Tainan, but this new cafe-cum-bar in a century-old shophouse along one of the city’s oldest alleys specialises in morning kick-starts of a different kind. Opened by Mei Chiu and Dan Zhang, a mixologist couple who returned to their native Taiwan after a four-year stint at some of Singapore’s top bars, Swallow starts serving cocktails as early as nine in the morning. Days start off with easy-sipping drinks such as black sesame espresso martinis and Taiwanese mountain tea with gin and riesling wine and turn more experimental – think whisky with buckwheat tea or sake vermouth with kombu distillate – after dark. Drop by even if you don’t intend on day drinking: the coffee menu is equally thoughtful and features slow drips, espressos and pour-overs with beans from Rufous Roasters in Taipei. Chris Schalkx

The Jade Room + Garden Terrace – Tokyo

The words “custard” and “bread” sit comfortably alongside “miso” and “yuzu” on the menu at Jade Room + Garden Terrace – offering a clue about the British-meets-Japanese innovations that lie behind the cuisine at the new signature restaurant at The Tokyo EDITION, Toranomon. The first Japan venture for London chef Tom Aikens, the restaurant hovers on the cloud-brushing 31st floor of the Kengo Kuma-designed hipster-magnet hotel. The space is as sleek and shiny as the creative clientele: picture walnut panelling tempered by a spectrum of greens (from the jade velvet seats and John Jackson paintings to a cornucopia of plants). The restaurant – which finally opened in October 2022, two years after the hotel debuted, following pandemic-related delays – flows onto a relaxed Garden Terrace (a rare rooftop luxury in Tokyo), with distractingly iconic Tokyo views. Those able to tear their eyes away from the urban cityscape are rewarded with the nature-inspired layers of Aikens cuisine, which playfully mixes influences from Japan and Britain. An opening highlight? Piglet belly, squid, pineapple and vanilla – a deliciously modern riff on old-school British classic gammon and pineapple. Danielle Demetriou

The golf influencer has also inspired “copycats” such as Grace Charis, Waiyi Chan and Lauren Pacheco.

She said: “They say that imitation is the greatest form of flattery, so I am proud to be an inspiration for all these women.

“I will say that I do value creativity and I wish that it wasn’t copied exactly from like the exact outfit, to my how I do my hair, to the captions, to how it’s shot.

“It would be nice if there was at least a little bit of a difference and I think it would actually be beneficial for them to be different – not to be exactly, exactly, exactly the same.”

The outing comes after Renner said he ‘got lucky in a lot of ways’ in surviving the ghastly New Year’s Day accident. He suffered 35 broken bones, a collapsed lung and had his liver pierced by a shattered rib.

Renner had been using a Snowcat plow to try to help his adult nephew, Alexander Fries, pull his car out of deep snow when he jumped out, forgetting to put on the emergency brake.

The plow started barreling towards his nephew and the actor is believed to have tried to get back into the snowplow while it was moving in in an effort to bring it to a halt. That’s when he was pulled beneath it and crushed.

The Marvel star appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live on Monday, less than four months after he nearly died.

He said of his broken bones: ‘We kept discovering them, because they went from critical order of priority of one of my going to die for them or not?’ the Modesto, California born actor. ‘Another break, another break.’

The Hawkeye star emerged with a cane in good spirits for the late night appearance, in which he said he was ‘happy to be here.’

The Academy Award-nominated star described the mechanics of the snow plow accident, noting how lucky he was that critical parts of his anatomy were spared as he was caught under the weight of the machine.

Made it out: Renner shared a hospital snap from the ghastly New Year’s Day accident while appearing on Jimmy Kimmel on Monday

Accident: He suffered 35 broken bones, a collapsed lung and had his liver pierced by a shattered rib in the death-defying accident

‘It’s like a giant metal – like cookie roller, right?’ he said. ‘And it just missed every vertebrae, did not hit any organs, membrane did not swell – my eye did pop out, that’s weird. But I got pretty lucky that none of the organs got messed up.’

Renner has been open about his recovery – which could potentially last for years – in the wake of the horrifying January 1 accident.

Renner said he continued to take into account the feelings of his loved ones amid his critical health ordeal: ‘It’s pretty harrowing to take the time to really consider somebody else’s perspective,’ Renner said.

Kimmel shared an image of the A-list actor as he was hospitalized in critical condition in the wake of the accident. Renner said that it was ‘probably’ his mother who took the photo.

The star said that in the wake of the accident, he was on the ground for about 45 minutes, and remembers ‘all of it’ up until he was transported to a nearby hospital.

‘Once I got into the helicopter to [go] the hospital, that’s when they jammed some sort of emergency knife or whatever they do in your chest – I don’t know, that’s when I was like, I got to go to sleep,’ he said.

Renner said he personally knew the local firefighters who were first responders in the incident, and overheard them saying they did the best they could, presuming the accident would be fatal.

‘Yes, some people thought I was dead and was going to die,’ he said. ‘I’m like, “No, man. I’m trying to get out of the hospital as soon as I was in it.” I’m like, “I’m out of here.”‘

Pretty in pink: Also at the premiere was Rachael Leigh Cook, 43, who looked elegant in a pink jumpsuit

Sparkling: The actress accessorized with a chic white purse featuring a sparkling bow accent

Family outing: Cook was pictured posing with daughter Charlotte and son Theodore

Coming up! Premiering on April 12, Rennervations will revolve around the Hawkeye star as he enlists his celebrity pals to repurpose vehicles which can serve communities

Over the weekend, Renner visited Six Flags Magic Mountain in Valencia, California with his family, posing for photos with relatives at the popular amusement park.

He was seen on the outing to Six Flags with his daughter. The actor kept a mobility scooter nearby to assist with his trek at the vast theme park.

‘It’s spring break, and my daughter turned 10, and she got my niece and nephews and all of her cousins, I had to treat them to a nice time and to the roller coasters,’ Renner told Kimmel of the trip, noting that he went on rides on the outing.

‘I just live by the principle of if it hurts I will stop,’ he said. ‘But if it doesn’t hurt, I’ll try it. So I did everything that didn’t and I had a great time – more importantly my daughter and all the kids did.’

Asked by Kimmel what the best thing to come out of the New Year’s Day situation was, Renner joked that he realized his calendar was freed up for the rest of the year.

Demi Lovato’s “29” Lyrics Hint At Their Age Difference From Ex-Boyfriend Wilmer Valderrama

Demi Lovato is holding nothing back on their eighth studio album HOLY FVCK, and nobody is safe — especially their exes. A new snippet of “29” from the upcoming album has gone viral on social media and fans are speculating that the song is about their ex-boyfriend Wilmer Valderrama — or more specifically, the 12-year age gap between the former couple. Bustle has reached out to Lovato’s representatives for comment but did not receive an immediate response.

Lovato fan account @Demi_Artistry posted a TikTok video spelling out the song’s lyrics and using images that draw a comparison to the singer’s relationship with the That ‘70s Show star. “Finally 29 / Funny, just like you were at the time,” Lovato wails on the chorus, nodding to Valderrama’s age when he started dating them. “Thought it was a teenage dream, just a fantasy / But was it yours or was it mine?” Lovato ends the chorus by repeating “17, 29,” adding in their own age when the relationship began.

If it wasn’t clear enough, Lovato only gets more savage on the verse. “Fiber on the vine, too young to drink wine,” Lovato sings. “Far from innocent, what the f*ck’s consent? / Numbers told you not to but that didn’t stop you.” The full version of “29” is set to be released as part of HOLY FVCK on August 19, which marks Lovato’s 30th birthday, so naturally, they haven’t commented on the song’s inspiration yet.

Lovato was in a relationship with Valderrama for nearly six years before they eventually split in 2016. In their 2017 documentary Demi Lovato: Simply Complicated, the star explained how they got together. “[When] I met him and I laid eyes on him for the first time, I was in hair and makeup and he came in and sat down and I was like, ‘I love this man’ and ‘I have to have him,’” she recalled. “But I was only 17, so he was like, ‘Get away from me.’ After I turned 18, we began dating. I think it was love at first sight, and I don’t really believe in that, but I believe that it happened.”

Lovato went on to say they’d “never loved anybody like I loved Wilmer,” and explained why they eventually broke up. “We connected on a level that I’ve never connected with anybody before,” Lovato said. “He was just my rock. My everything. It had nothing to do with falling out of love. We decided together that we’re probably just better as friends.”

Despite Lovato seemingly calling him out on their new song, the duo have stayed friendly since their break-up. In January 2021, Valderrama acknowledged his ex on Instagram after their animated film Charming premiered on Netflix, thanking Lovato as part of the “incredible cast,” which also included Ashley Tisdale and Avril Lavigne. “Demi and Wilmer are still in touch,” a source told Entertainment Tonight at the time. “They still love each other as friends and will always be supportive of one another.”
