Jordan Heiderman Says PFL Format is The Right Fit For Him

Jordan Heiderman is 7-0 and has a chance at claiming the PFL 2023 heavyweight title and the million-dollar prize should he get through Denis Goltsov. Goltsov has a ton of experience (31-7) and is favored to win, but combat sports have a history of underdogs coming out on top, and the PFL has been pretty much built on that fact.

Heiderman has a stint on The Ultimate Fighter that did not work out for him, but he has landed in the PFL. He knows that Goltsov brings a lot of experience to the table but no one gets into combat sports for easy fights. The PFL format has given him a chance that would take fighters years to get to this point with the record that he has and having gotten this far, Heiderman says this is the best thing for him.

“I love how the PFL runs their shows,” said Heiderman. “I just think it’s the right fit for me in my career right now. I’m excited to be in the playoffs, a chance for a million and a PFL title.”

Heiderman told the media in attendance that he works as a bartender in between his training sessions. So, if he can get past Goltsov and advance to the finals to win the 2023 title, his story could add to the many stories the PFL has built for fighters like Ray Cooper III and Larissa Pacheco. Fighters known, but not well-known have built their legacy and brand in a format that seems to be what dreams are made of in the fight world.

See Heiderman’s full media-day scrum above and tune in to watch him take his chance on Friday night in Madison Square Garden. The PFL Play-offs air on ESPN/ESPN+ and of course you can keep it locked here at MyMMANews for updates.

Socialist candidate elected parliamentary speaker, possibly paving way for new leftist govt

Thursday’s session was widely seen as a trial run ahead of a crucial investiture vote — which determines who forms the government — after an inconclusive July election.

Francina Armengol, 52, was named parliamentary speaker — the third-highest office in Spain after the king and the prime minister — with an absolute majority of 178 votes in the 350-seat chamber.

Her election was secured following a last-minute deal with the hardline Catalan separatist party JxCat, which has been cast in the role of kingmaker.

During the July polls, neither the left nor the right won enough seats to constitute a working majority of 176 mandates — with each side only able to amass the cross-party support of 171 lawmakers.

That has put JxCat in an influential position, with the votes cast by its seven lawmakers on Thursday proving decisive to secure Armengol’s election.

And Sanchez is hoping he will be able to do the same in an investiture vote, although experts say those negotiations will be far more complicated.

Although winning the speaker vote was “a good sign” for Sanchez, it “by no means guarantees his appointment for another term, given substantial obstacles to meeting JxCat’s demands,” said Federico Santi, an analyst at Eurasia Group in London.

The vote also highlighted the problems facing Alberto Nunez-Feijoo whose right-wing Popular Party (PP) won the election but with less support than expected, meaning he will need the far-right Vox to form a government.

But rather than throwing their support behind Cuca Gamarra, the PP’s candidate in Thursday’s vote, Vox’s 33 MPs voted for their own candidate, leaving Gamarra floundering.

After choosing a speaker, parliament’s first job will be to choose a prime minister, with an investiture vote due later this month or in early September.

‘Not linked to investiture’

In exchange for its support, the Socialists and their radical leftist ally Sumar had agreed to four demands, JxCat said, insisting the deal was “not linked to the investiture vote”.

JxCat said the agreement involved recognition of Catalan as an official EU language and the use of Catalan in Spain’s parliament.

It also involved the creation of two inquiry panels into the 2017 Barcelona terror attacks and the use of Pegasus software to spy on Catalan separatists.

But for an investiture vote, the bar has been set much higher.

The separatists want an amnesty for anyone pursued by the Spanish justice system over their failed 2017 independence bid and a referendum on self-determination, with JxCat leader Carles Puigdemont demanding solid guarantees before offering support to Spain’s next government.

“We have no confidence in Spanish political parties,” he wrote Wednesday on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter.

“We cannot move forward on the basis of promises made by those who always fail to keep them, so we need to see solid guarantees before committing to vote.”

A nod to the separatists

Puigdemont himself is one of those wanted by the Spanish justice system for his role in the botched independence bid of 2017.

Now 60, he headed the regional government of Catalonia when it staged a referendum banned by Madrid on October 1, 2017, which was followed by a short-lived declaration of independence.

He fled Spain shortly after to avoid prosecution and currently lives in Belgium from where he leads JxCat.

Sanchez’s choice of Armengol was widely seen as a nod to the separatists: between 2015-2023, she was regional leader of the Balearic Islands, where Catalan is widely spoken.

And on Wednesday he promised to promote the use of Catalan, Basque and Galician within Europe — a long-running demand of nationalist parties.

“Spain speaks Castilian Spanish but also Catalan, Basque and Galician. We are going to promote the use (of these languages) within EU institutions in a commitment I will carry out during Spain’s presidency of the EU,” he said of the role Spain took over on July 1.

Olena Kolesnyk: Trilogy bout with Larissa Pacheco at 2023 PFL Playoffs 2 is ‘actually the finals’

Olena Kolesnyk is certain things are going to be different with Larissa Pacheco when they meet for a third time in Friday’s 2023 PFL Playoffs 2 co-main event.

Pacheco (21-4) is the only person to beat Kolesnyk (9-5) in the past two years, and she’s done it twice. The Brazilian won the initial encounter by first-round knockout at 2021 PFL 6, then repeated the feat with another first-round finish due to strikes in the rematch during the 2022 PFL Playoffs.

It’s been a difficult matchup for Kolesnyk, 32, but with four wins in her past five fights, she thinks she’s improved to the point where the outcome will be different. Moreover, she thinks this is the definitive matchup of this PFL women’s featherweight season, despite the fact the winner will have to go through another round before claiming the $1 million season prize.

“In the beginning I thought it would be great to fight her in the finals, but nobody said that you can pick who we fight,” Kolesnyk told MMA Junkie Radio. “I guess the semifinals will be better because it will be three rounds. Better now than later. We know, you know and PFL knows this is actually the finals fight, because the other girls are easy ones. This fight will be understanding who will be the champion this year.”

The 2023 PFL Playoffs 2 event takes place at The Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York. The main card airs on ESPN and streams on ESPN+ following prelims on ESPN+.

The way Kolesnyk explains it, she lost the first fight vs. Pacheco because of a “mistake” during a striking exchange. The said she offered Pacheco “too much respect” in the rematch, and that messed with her mentally.

Going into the third fight, however, Kolesnyk is focused and confident. The Ukrainian said she’s determined to win this PFL season, and derailing 2022 women’s lightweight champ Pacheco’s chance of becoming a two-division winner in back-to-back seasons would just be icing on the cake.

“God decided to send me Larissa again to do it again,” Kolesnyk said. “So, let’s fight again. I don’t care about who I fight. All I want to make happen is to be in the finals of PFL this year.

Olena Kolesnyk: ‘I leave my balls on the wall’

The Ukrainian Olena Kolesnyk once again finds herself in the PFL Playoffs, with $1 Million and the Championship an arms length away. But, she is pitted against a familiar foe in last year’s lightweight champion Larissa Pacheco who holds two victories over her.

This season appears to be the best version of Kolesnyk yet, with wins over Aspen Ladd and Yoko Higashi to vault “Cannon” back into the playoff picture.

In her interview with John Shields for Fight Famous, she talked about how men “aren’t manly anymore” and how she has a gay friend that is “manlier than most guys”. I wanted to expand on this topic, and after referencing the interview, she laughed and provided some deeper thoughts on dating men in the modern world…

“Oh my god. Listen, first of all, my friend’s name is Jacob. I love him with all my heart and he was an American soldier, he’s amazing. Recently we watched the Barbie movie which I loved. Anyway, what I love in Jacob is that when he says he will be there he’s there. There aren’t too many men that keep their word unfortunately nowadays. When you’re a fighter and a strong woman physically and mentally, it’s not easy to find the right partner for your life. They look at my job and what I do for a living and they think I’m the same dominant person in real life, and this is attractive to the men who are looking for a strong mother or women.”

“For people who know me well, when I leave the gym I leave my balls on the wall and I become more feminine. I like to take care of my man and make him less stressed and more comfortable – I like to be a classy woman at home but for my job and for my fights I need to wear this mask. Sometimes men take it the wrong way and think I’ll be the same in the relationship but that’s not true; I am totally the opposite”.

She had also spoken about this experience leading to her being single and I wanted to know if the dating troubles affected her emotionally or if she was unbothered by the lack of partners that checked the boxes she needed.

“[My] mindset is that in the right time and right place you definitely will find the right person and the funny thing is there are a few magic words you need to say if you want to fall in love; I will never fall in love again ever. As soon as you say that, it’s unexpected and not predicted and that’s when it happened to me. 3 years ago I told myself my heart is closed and I will not have any feelings and be numb. This year I speak out loud that I need the [PFL] belt and tell all my friends but then you wake up one day that you feel more for one person than you’re supposed to feel and that’s when there’s an alarm. We will see what happens next but right now I feel really good.”

Olena Kolesnyk faces Larissa Pacheco in the co-main event of the PFL Playoffs on August 18th inside Madison Square Garden.

A quick-thinking police officer jumped into action to save a one-month-old baby who was unconscious in Arapahoe County, Colorado, on Sunday (13 August). Deputy Nicholas Pacheco responded to an emergency call from baby Carlos’s parents, who said he was not breathing. The officer noticed the infant was blue in colour and quickly began CPR and back thrusts. The baby responded and coughed up a “white substance” before gasping for air and crying. Carlos was taken to hospital for evaluation. “We are pleased to report baby Carlos is now back home and doing fine,” Arapahoe Sheriff said.

Expert picks and best bets: Who should bettors back at UFC 292 and 2023 PFL playoffs? – ESPN

UFC men’s bantamweight champion, Aljamain Sterling will go for a record-setting fourth 135-pound title defense when he takes on Sean O’Malley in the main event at UFC 292 in Boston on Saturday night (10 p.m. ET on ESPN+ PPV).

Sterling, ESPN’s No. 7 ranked pound-for-pound fighter, is riding a nine-fight win streak. Most recently he beat former division champ, Henry Cejudo by split decision at UFC 288 in May. O’Malley, ranked No. 4 in ESPN’s divisional rankings, has won four of his last five bouts. He also won his last fight by split decision, beating Petr Yan at UFC 280 last October.

In the co-main event, women’s strawweight champion Zhang Weili will fight Amanda Lemos. Zhang, sits atop ESPN’s women’s pound-for-pound rankings, she beat Cara Esparza to reclaim the title at UFC 281 in November 2022. Lemos, ranked No. 3 in ESPN’s divisional rankings, has won back-to-back fights via stoppage.

Former UFC women’s featherweight and current ESPN MMA analyst Megan Anderson gives her perspective on the main event. ESPN’s betting experts Reed Kuhn and Ian Parker add their insights and analysis on the main event and other intriguing bets they like on the card.

How Sterling wins: He’s got to get a hold of O’Malley. Utilize his wrestling to get O’Malley on the mat, and then control him there. From there, Sterling can use his ground and pound or his jiu-jitsu skills to take the back to dictate the fight. Sterling’s ability to take his opponent’s back is among the best in the entire promotion.

The way he uses his wrestling to create scrambles, and then get the takedown to get the opponent’s back is so impressive. We saw him do it against top-level guys like Cejudo, Yan and Cory Sandhagen. None of them had an answer for it. Sometimes Sterling is able to get the submission from that position and other times he’s just able to control from there. Although the success rate of landing those submissions has decreased as he moved up in competition, but even when he doesn’t get them he uses the threat of submissions to dominate rounds. Sterling is going to have to use that ability against O’Malley. He can’t allow O’Malley to find his range. Even though both fighters have a similar reach, O’Malley has so many more ways to put Sterling away on the feet.

How O’Malley wins: He’s going to have to keep this fight on the feet. O’Malley’s ability to find his opponent’s chin is outstanding. He is a master of movement and range and with his head movement and the diversity in his strikes, it makes him a very tough matchup.

O’Malley stance switches a lot, which helps him maintain lateral movement. Plus, he is dangerous from both stances. His jabs and straight punches are fast and clean. When you get a guy like Sterling, who has okay striking — but not at the level of O’Malley — and has a tendency to keep his hands low, that’s a recipe for trouble against O’Malley who is a sniper. At some point in the fight, O’Malley is going to find his opponent’s chin.

As we saw in his fight against Yan, O’Malley was able to use his knees to disrupt Yan’s wrestling and even cut him open. Those strikes slowed down the pressure of Yan. I could see him using a similar game plan against the heavy wrestling approach of Sterling.

X-factor: What does O’Malley look like in the championship rounds? We’ve seen him go the distance in a hard-fought split decision over Yan in his last fight, but that was a three-round fight. We’ve never seen O’Malley in a five-round fight. However, we know Sterling can go for 25 minutes. How is O’Malley’s cardio? What does his strike output look like in the later rounds?

Prediction: If I have to pick, it’s probably Sterling by decision.

Betting analysis

UFC 292: Sterling vs. O’Malley

Stand-up striking offense Sterling O’Malley
Total knockdown ratio (Knockdowns/times knocked down) 0:4 5:0

Submission Attempts per Trip to Ground 0.23 0.21
Table compiled by Reed Kuhn

Kuhn: Sterling to win (-240). Sterling hasn’t closed as a two-to-one betting favorite since 2017, yet here he is as a sizable favorite against O’Malley. That’s because Sterling has won four straight fights against former champions, while O’Malley backed his way into a title shot after a controversial split decision. A result that followed a fight he was likely losing before a Yan foul resulted in the bout being ruled a no contest.

While O’Malley’s striking statistics are among the best in the UFC, Sterling will offer five high-pressure rounds, with tricky long-range striking of his own to give O’Malley his toughest test yet. Add in Sterling’s elite grappling, and this feels like a tall ask for O’Malley.

Women’s strawweight title fight: Zhang Weili vs. Amanda Lemos

Tale of the Tape

How Zhang wins: She just needs to be herself. Zhang is such a well-rounded fighter. She seamlessly mixes everything together. She is incredibly strong and powerful for the division. She has great footwork and movement and she mixes in the takedowns. Then on the mat, she’s smothering on top of opponents and has dangerous ground and pound.

To be able to use those skills against Lemos, Zhang needs to be first. Set the pace, don’t let Lemos build any momentum. Lemos may have a power advantage, but Zhang will be the quicker fighter with the faster hands. She needs to resist being a stationary target, be in and out with her movement to avoid Lemos’ power.

How Lemos wins: Grab a hold of Zhang and bully her. Use her size and power to dictate the fight. She throws with power in each of her strikes, but she needs to manage her energy output. In previous fights, Lemos has shown that she starts to fade as fights go on. She’ll need to try to end this fight early.

Lemos is used to being the hammer, dictating the action and pressing forward against opponents, but when she’s the nail she tends to struggle. To give herself a chance later in the fight, Lemos news to use her powerful leg kicks. When you want to shut down an opponent’s movement, you have to take their legs away from them. If Lemos can attack Zhang’s legs early, it could pay off down the line.

X-factor: Cardio. As I mentioned above, Lemos slows as fights go on. When you look at her fights many of her wins tend to be quick finishes. Rarely do they go into the second or third round. In her longer fights, Lemos has shown she can use her size wear on opponents, but that’s in a 15-minute fight. 25 minutes is a different beast.

Prediction: I have Zhang winning. I think if she gets a stoppage, likely be in the Round 4 or Round 5. I think she’ll set a high pace early, stay clear of the power and wear Lemos down then put her away in the championship rounds.

Betting analysis

UFC 292: Zhang vs. Lemos

Table compiled by Reed Kuhn

Kuhn: Lean Lemos to win (+250). This title matchup seems much more competitive. Again the challenger offers dangerous and precise striking at range, but this time also has some takedown defense to keep the fight where she wants it. Lemos has the highest knockdown rate in the division. And that power comes behind unusually high accuracy. It will be interesting to see how Zhang manages the standup game against a rangier southpaw with such skills.

Or maybe Zhang will rely on her new and improved grappling. Her takedown success rate isn’t great, but was more than effective when she submitted former champ Carla Esparza. However, with 82 percent takedown defense, Lemos has been hard to take down, and also to control on the mat. Overall, Lemos does have a path to victory via her striking, and the return is high enough to take a stab.

Parker: Zhang to win, inside the distance (-150). This fight has a similar vibe to when Zhang fought Jessica Andrade. Like Andrade, Lemos swings aggressively but also has a submission game if the opportunity presents itself. However, I think the difference here for Zhang will be her cardio and her wrestling. Look for Zhang to take Lemos down and tire her out with her top control and damage then eventually get a late finish.

Best bets on the rest of the card

Kuhn: Lean Weidman to win (+235). Here we have two veteran middleweights with nearly identical striking metrics. However, while Weidman is older, he’s bigger and arguably less damaged. That is, except for his leg. He’s making his return to the Octagon 847 days after a brutal leg injury.

The matchup on the feet is somewhat of a wash. But if Weideman takes the fight to the ground — as he has historically tried to do so early and often — he will have a significant advantage with submissions and control. With such a juicy price, backing a former champion as an underdog with a clear path to victory seems to be the better value play.

Parker: Rodrigues to win, inside the distance. Prior to his loss to Bruno Ferreira, Rodrigues had won back-to-back fights by knockout. He is a well-rounded fighter and has a strong ground game, if the striking game isn’t going his way. Tiuliulin is the perfect matchup stylistically for Rodrigues to get another finish and get back in the win column.

Women’s flyweight: Andrea Lee vs. Natalia Silva

Kuhn: Silva to win (-360). Lee certainly has the edge in credentials as a decorated striker, but, statistically, Silva shows up better in nearly every striking category. Though Silva will be at a slight range disadvantage, the southpaw will be more aggressive, more accurate and has been hitting harder than her opponent. Silva also has the added benefit of a significant youth advantage.

The ground game may not come into play, but even there Silva has shown better position control. She’s only been taken down once, while Lee has much worse takedown defense. Silva has a history of submissions, and though we haven’t seen it yet in her young UFC career, it’s safe to say she’s comfortable on the ground.

Best bets for 2023 PFL playoffs: Heavyweights and Women’s Featherweights

Get your favorite live sports, stories and originals with ESPN+, Disney+ and Hulu. Upgrade to a Disney Bundle plan and start streaming something for everyone today!

Parker: Ferreira to win by KO/TKO. After earning a playoff spot, due to a Marcos Nunes injury, Greene looks to make the most of this opportunity. But, unless Greene can take down Ferreira early and keep him there, he might be seeing an early exit. Ferreira is coming off a knockout win and will likely try to keep the fight standing. We have seen in the past that once the fight hits the floor and Ferreira gets put on his back, he tends to struggle and lose the fight. However, I believe he will be able to keep it standing and get an early knockout win over Greene.

Women’s featherweight: Larissa Pacheco vs. Olena Kolesnyk

Parker: Pacheco to win by KO/TKO in Round 1. Pacheco enters the playoffs hoping to become the PFL’s first-ever women’s two-division champ. This will be the third time Pacheco and Kolesnyk will square off, and unfortunately for Kolesnyk, I don’t see a different outcome taking place. Pacheco already has two knockout wins over Kolesynk, and though Kolesynk has looked better this season with her defense, Pacheco is one of the best in the world regardless of promotion. I expect a first-round finish from Pacheco.

Parker: Goltsov to win, inside the distance. Since his loss to in 2021, Goltsov has gone on a four-fight win streak and looked flawless doing so. Meanwhile, his opponent Heiderman was a late notice fill-in for the PFL season. I believe Heiderman’s undefeated streak will come to an end here, as Goltsov is the favorite to win the season and will have the advantage anywhere the fight goes. Unless Heidmeran gets a flash knockout, look for Goltsov to establish the jab and eventually take the fight to the floor where he will get the finish.

Women’s featherweight: Marina Mokhnatkina vs. Amber Leibrock

Parker: Mokhnatkina to win. After landing one of the most vicious knockouts of 2023, Leibrock was on the opposite end of one in her second fight against Pacheco. Mokhnatkina is a durable fighter with good cardio and sambo. And she improved striking since last season. Mokhnatkina is a heavy favorite, but makes sense based on their performances this season. I expect Mokhnatkina to get the fight to the ground and control Leibrock from there. Unless Leibrock lands another monster kick, Mokhnatkina’s pace and top control will be enough to grind out a win.
