Kaytlin Neil excited to make PFL debut on Aug. 18

Kaytlin Neil is officially a member of the PFL roster, and she’ll make her first walk to the PFL cage on Aug. 18 at PFL Playoffs 2.

In her last fight, Neil fought for a chance to earn a PFL contract on the PFL Challenger Series and she picked up a win in that fight by defeating Katherine Corogenes by a unanimous decision.

Neil wasn’t selected for a contract on the show, but the PFL was in contact with Neil and her management team throughout the course of this whole PFL journey as they really wanted her to be a part of the promotion one day.

That day has now come as Neil is set to take on Maira Mazar on Aug. 18.

Neil is super excited for the opportunity and she’s hoping this is the start of a long career with the PFL.

The PFL operations different than the other promotions as the have a regular season and playoffs and since Neil wasn’t a part of the regular season this is likely her last fight of 2023.

With this likely being her last fight of the year, Neil is planning on building a lot of momentum for next year with a win on fight night.

Ahead of the night, Neil made her normal journey from her home in Utah to Syndicate MMA in Las Vegas where she has been preparing for the fight.

Her camp got off to a bit of a slow start as Neil was sick when camp first got underway, but as soon as Neil felt better, she really started to put in some great work.

Syndicate offers Neil a lot of high-level training partners like UFC fighters Cynthia Calvillo, Jasmine Jasudavicius and Juliana Miller. It also provides her with training partners who are built and fight exactly like her upcoming opponent.

Neil feels more than ready for the fight and she’s planning on making her first ever trip to New York City as a memorable one.

Prior to the fight, Neil spoke with MyMMANews to discuss her matchup with Mazar, her excitement to fight in New York and her long-term plans with the PFL.

You can watch her full interview in the video above.

In Kenya, vegetable towers bolster food security – CSMonitor.com

When drought hit Kenya three years ago, Agripina Mutuka had to slash her family’s diet to just one meal a day.

This was the most Ms. Mutuka, a widow who has been working as a farmer for 10 years, could afford after the drought dramatically reduced her earnings from the sale of her agricultural produce. “I used to fill 15 bags of maize each harvest. After the drought, I can barely fill three bags,” says Ms. Mutuka, who provides for her four children and two grandchildren in the agricultural region of Kakamega.

Kenya is going through its worst drought in 40 years, drying up the country’s once lush farmlands and leaving 4.4 million people in need of food assistance, according to official estimates.

Why We Wrote This

Faced with rising food insecurity – driven by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the climate emergency – many African countries are scrambling to adapt. A solution in Kenya that provides food and dignity could take root elsewhere.

On top of the damage wrought by the climate emergency, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has also pushed up prices of staple imports such as oil, wheat, rice, maize, fertilizers, and oilseeds.

So when an American nongovernmental organization called 100 Humanitarians invited Ms. Mutuka and others in her village of Lanasawa to a meeting to discuss a possible solution for the dire food situation, she did not think twice.

The NGO introduced Ms. Mutuka and 30 of her neighbors to garden towers, 4-foot-tall durable mesh fabric cylinders, filled with soil and punched with holes a few inches apart into which seedlings are planted to produce a dense vertical garden, capable of growing 120 vegetables and herbs – all in a diameter of just 3 feet.

Ms. Mutuka and her neighbors were trained in planting, maintaining, and selling the vegetables from the garden tower.

“I fully embraced the idea of the garden towers,” she recalls. “Its model provided convenience in terms of land, as only a small portion is used to grow crops.”

The NGO’s local staff followed up with each family, helping them to maximize the growing potential of the garden towers and troubleshoot as necessary.

Agripina Mutuka’s garden towers are replete with vegetables in Lanasawa village, Kenya, July 23, 2023.

Two years after first learning about them, Ms. Mutuka now has eight garden towers. She uses two to feed the family, and in the others she grows vegetables to sell.

“The money from the sale of the garden towers’ vegetables is enough to sustain my family,” she says.

Cheap and easy to use

According to World Bank data, the number of Kenyans suffering from severe food insecurity has been increasing since 2015.

The 100 Humanitarians founder and executive director, Heidi Totten, had been piloting garden boxes as a sustainable solution to hunger in Kenya after seeing one of them in the capital of Nairobi.

During her experiments with garden boxes, though, she found that they were beset by termites and weren’t hardy enough to survive the weather. So she replaced the boxes with hard-wearing mesh towers and found them far better adapted to the climate and pests in Kenya. The mesh lasts for 10 years, and the soil needs replacing every four years.

A year after the towers were introduced to Lanasawa, the results were already encouraging: Each tower could feed a family of five to six people one meal of vegetables per day. Families could sell any excess vegetables to supplement their incomes, and some earned extra money from sewing and assembling the mesh cylinders.

Agripina Mutuka sells vegetables grown in her garden tower to her neighbor in Lanasawa village, Kenya, July 23, 2023.

Each garden tower costs about $20, including soil and plant seedlings, and each family needs two to grow enough to meet its nutritional needs.

So far, 10,000 garden towers have been distributed for free to families most in need of support. Others with the means to buy them are encouraged to purchase the towers directly from the NGO.

Shifting mentalities

Marissa Waldrop, a program director with 100 Humanitarians, says a garden tower is not only cheaper than a traditional vegetable plot, but more sustainable, too.

“It is easy to set up, uses less space, and takes about two months for the vegetables to grow to maturity,” she says. “Also, the project uses less water, because water that would otherwise go to waste travels downwards through other plants in the tower. And soil used in the garden towers holds nutrients better than soil lying on the ground.”

Despite the fact that the towers use significantly less water than a conventional garden, water remains a challenge in the current conditions, says Ms. Totten.

“We are researching possible ways of irrigating these garden towers while also saving [water] for other personal use. One way would be to drill boreholes to help give access to clean water,” she says.

100 Humanitarians plans to build and distribute 5,000 garden towers, serving 2,500 families, every year. It could do more if it had more money, says Ms. Totten. And it seems as if the local government in Kakamega might be interested.

“To help people eat more sustainably if weather patterns stay as they are, we need to introduce a variety of plants, encourage people to grow their own food, and consider cutting down on food waste,” says David Omwenga, an agricultural officer with the Kakamega County government.

“The garden tower is a sustainable growing system that provides an easy way to grow fresh and healthy produce at home,” he points out.

empower and uplift daily.

Lanasawa’s administrative chief, Kepha Lusasi, agrees. “Thanks to the garden towers, people now are very independent. … We barely have any beggars or people who go without food,” he says. “It’s as if the mentality has shifted.”

A new copper acquisition for Rio Tinto

Rio Tinto is set to expand its foothold in Chile’s lucrative mining sector with its decision to purchase PanAmerican Silver’s majority stake in Agua de la Falda S.A., a company holding exploration tenements in the promising Atacama region.

Alongside this acquisition, Rio Tinto has entered into a joint venture with Corporación Nacional del Cobre de Chile (Codelco), the world’s largest copper producer, to jointly explore and develop Agua de la Falda’s potential assets.

Under the terms of the agreement, Rio Tinto will acquire a substantial 57.74 per cent stake in Agua de la Falda at a cost of $45 million, as well as granting new smelter returns royalties. Additionally, Rio Tinto will gain complete ownership of the nearby Meridian Property for $550,000 and the grant of new smelter returns royalties.

Codelco, the world’s largest copper producer, holds the remaining 42.26 per cent stake in Agua de la Falda.

“Copper is critical for the global energy transition, which is at the heart of Rio Tinto’s strategy, and Chile is one of the most important sources of world supply as demand for copper in renewables and electrification grows,” Rio Tinto chief executive officer Jakob Stausholm said.

“Partnerships are essential to find better ways to provide materials the world needs, and we are pleased we can bring our global exploration capability to a joint venture that will be able to access Codelco’s strong local presence and industry expertise.

“Although this is an early-stage exploration project, we are very excited to be actively exploring in Chile in partnership with Codelco.”

Codelco chairman Maximo Pacheco echoed a similar sentiment.

“Codelco welcomes Rio Tinto in Agua de la Falda. This is a remarkable opportunity to put two leading mining companies to work together, leveraging the combined experiences, strengths, and capabilities of each organisation,” he said.

“By joining forces, we can enhance our exploration and development efforts for a highly promising asset.”

Zhile Cao Is Vying to Represent District 25 On New York’s City Council – Vision Times

On November 7, New Yorkers will hit the polls in a general election to elect representatives to sit on New York’s City Council. On the ballot, vying to represent District 25, is Republican Zhile Cao.

District 25 includes Jackson Heights and Elmhurst, Queens, two of the most diverse communities in New York City.

He will be squaring off against Democrat and member of the Working Families Party,  Shekar Krishnan who won the Democratic Primary with 64.1 percent of the vote, beating out Ricardo Pacheco and Fatima Baryab. Cao ran unopposed in the Republican primary, resulting in the Republican primaries being canceled.

“I am running because people should have the right to know and dictate the laws that are affecting their lives,” Cao told Vision Times last May, adding that his office wants to “limit the power of the government to prevent them from forcing citizens to take up certain measures such as mask mandates, forced vaccinations, or other policies that could have adverse effects on their health.”

“That’s what they [have tried] to do for the last three years. They lockdown the city, they make everybody wear masks, and they try to make people take the vaccine. That’s the stuff they learned from China,” Cao said, characterizing COVID-19 measures as typical of a communist country like China.

Describing himself as a “progressive” Republican, Cao is running on a broad platform, promising to tackle the district’s affordable housing crisis, implement educational reforms, create a pathway to immigration for undocumented immigrants, combat climate change, ensure accessible healthcare for all New Yorkers and support disenfranchised groups.

In order to address these issues, if elected, Cao says he will work to pass rent control measures to make housing more affordable, increase funding for public schools and pay teachers more, support a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants and protect the environment by drafting more comprehensive and stricter environmental laws.

Housing and migrant crisis

While visiting a neighboring district, Cao took the time to speak with Vision Times and voiced his concerns about the housing and migrant crisis gripping the state, pointing to a tent city in the district and saying this is what they want to do in District 25.

If elected, Cao says he will tackle the affordable housing crisis by working to implement rent control and other measures to make housing more affordable for low- and middle-income residents. He also supports building more affordable housing units to assist the most vulnerable populations in the area.

He believes New York’s mayor, Eric Adams, has the power to resolve the crisis but is “playing dumb.”

“There’s a solution but the City, Mayor Adams, he tries to play dumb. He tried to say, ‘Oh, I don’t know how to do it,’” Cao said.

He believes the United Nations (UN) needs to play a larger role in resolving the migrant crisis that is impacting a number of countries around the globe.

Cao does support a pathway for immigrants to gain citizenship. As an immigrant himself, he also supports policies that protect immigrants from deportation.

“I believe every person who arrives in the U.S. has a right to be protected from persecution or harassment,” Cao said.

“My office wants to make sure every person is treated with dignity and respect, and in turn, we are asking you to do your civic duty as well to elect the people who truly care, and will do the best job to represent every constituent,” Cao said.

The general election will take place on Nov. 7, 2023.

Throughout the evening, hundreds of people joined Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn, who hosted the event, for the celebration in South Whittier.

The event began with a peace march from the Community Resource Center, 10750 Laurel Ave., to the park to rallying “against crime.” Kids and adults held signs in support of a safer community.

Officials joined the celebration including Rep. Blanca Pacheco, Sen. Tom Umberg, Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna, Whittier Mayor Joe Vinatieri, and Santa Fe Springs California Highway Patrol Capt. Melissa Hammond.

“Our Sheriff’s Deputies are valued members of the communities they serve across L.A. County, and residents are important partners in keeping our neighborhoods safe,” Hahn said.

“National Night Out is a great opportunity for residents to meet the deputies who serve their neighborhood and learn about all of the resources available to them in that partnership,” Hahn, whose district includes South Whittier, said in a statement.

The event also featured a public safety display, food vendors, games, live music, and a chance for residents to meet deputies from the substation.

Rio Tinto to acquire and develop Chilean exploration assets

Rio Tinto agreed to acquire PanAmerican Silver’s stake in Agua de la Falda S.A., a company with exploration tenements in Chile’s Atacama region, and to form a joint venture with Corporación Nacional del Cobre de Chile (Codelco) to explore and potentially develop Agua de la Falda’s assets.

Under the agreement, Rio Tinto will pay $45 million for PanAmerican Silver’s operational stake of 57.74% in Agua de la Falda and grant new smelter returns royalties. In addition, for $550,000, Rio Tinto will purchase all of the neighbouring concessions collectively known as the Meridian Property and additional smelter return royalties.

Codelco owns the remaining 42.26% of Agua de la Falda.

Rio Tinto Chief Executive Jakob Stausholm commented, “Copper is critical for the global energy transition, which is at the heart of Rio Tinto’s strategy, and Chile is one of the most important sources of world supply as demand for copper in renewables and electrification grows.”

“Partnerships are essential to find better ways to provide materials the world needs, and we are pleased we can bring our global exploration capability to a joint venture that will be able to access Codelco’s strong local presence and industry expertise,” Stausholm said.

According to him, Rio Tinto is thrilled to explore in Chile in partnership with Codelco, although the exploration project is still in its early stages.

Codelco Chairman Maximo Pacheco said, “Codelco welcomes Rio Tinto in Agua de la Falda. This is a remarkable opportunity to put two leading mining companies to work together, leveraging the combined experiences, strengths, and capabilities of each organisation. By joining forces, we can enhance our exploration and development efforts for a highly promising asset.”

“Public-private partnerships have proven to be successful for Codelco and Chile for many years, and we are convinced that this is a compelling alternative to move a project forward and to complement the significant exploration and project portfolio being developed exclusively by Codelco,” Pacheco added.

The joint venture builds on Rio Tinto and Codelco’s underground mining collaboration agreement signed on 12 October 2022 to encourage innovations and technology to enhance safety, productivity, and environmental, social, and governance (ESG) outcomes.

Agua de la Falda was previously explored for precious metals, with little recent exploration for copper. Rio Tinto Exploration’s recent analysis suggests that it has potential for new copper discoveries, which will now be the joint venture’s focus.

Eddie Hearn Says Edgar Berlanga Vs. Jaime Munguia Winner “nailed On” To Get Canelo Fight – Boxing News 24

By Dan Ambrose: Eddie Hearn says he’s confident that the winner of a fight between unbeaten super middleweight contenders Edgar Berlanga and Jaime Munguia will get a shot against undisputed 168-lb champion Canelo Alvarez.

Berlanga (21-0, 16 KOs) and Munguia (42-0, 33 KOs) are a couple of highly criticized fighters who have been spoon-fed weak opposition their entire careers. Neither is deserving of a title shot against Canelo, given their lack of quality wins.

In other words, they are just a couple of underachievers looking for a cash-out against Canelo rather than getting in the trenches and earning the shot through hard work against the killers in the 168-lb division.

It would be pathetic if the Berlanga-Munguia winner would get a fight against Canelo while the far more deserving fighters David Benavidez, Demetrius Andrade & David Morrell Jr. are ignored by the Mexican star.

Instead of Hearn looking to match Berlanga against Munguia, who doesn’t fight at 168, he should match him against one of these fights from the super middleweight division:

– David Morrell Jr
– Caleb Plant
– Demetrius Andrade
– David Benavidez
– Diego Pacheco

It seems more like a pipe dream that Hearn has puffed up out of hope rather than reality because Canelo is under contract with PBC for three fights, and they’re rumored to have already chosen the other two opponents they want him to face after he defends against Jermell Charlo on September 30th.

“It was nice, wasn’t it? All of a sudden, he wants to make a fight. He wants to make the fight because DAZN wants to make the fight, and we’ve already been talking to Golden Boy for a number of weeks about Berlanga against Munguia,” said Eddie Hearn to iFL TV about his desire to make a fight between Matchroom fighter Edgar Berlanga and the Golden Boy-promoted Jaime Munguia next.

“Frank Smith [of Matchroom] met with [Golden Boy Promotions president] Eric Gomez in LA. Obviously, DAZN has said to Matchroom and Golden Boy,  ‘That’s the fight we want next, Jaime Munguia against Berlanga.’

“It’s absolutely an epic fight. Mexico against Puerto Rico, pure 50-50, an absolute war. Have me some of that, and hopefully, we can sit down with our friends at Golden Boy and get it made.

“Yeah, you can always do a deal with PBC. If PBC don’t have an opponent that Canelo accepts,” said Hearn when asked about the possibility of him making a deal between Berlanga and Canelo Alvarez, who PBC is currently promoting for his next three fights.

“I don’t even know the actual length of the deal with PBC. Who knows? It’s never been fully announced, but if they run out of opponents or if there’s someone that makes a massive fight, I’m sure we can do that.

“If Canelo doesn’t agree to certain terms and leaves PBC, I tell you what. The Munguia-Berlanga winner is absolutely nailed on to fight Canelo Alvarez. It’s a massive fight.

“It’s like certain fights make sense. Wood-Warrington. How can you not make it? Berlanga-Munguia is absolutely the same. How can we not make it? You got to get it done,” said Hearn.
