Brazil: Senate Commission will analyze the AI bill in 120 days

The bill, aimed at regulating the artificial intelligence in the country, was introduced to the Senate in December 2022.

Catching up with the wave of regulatory attention to artificial intelligence (AI), Brazil gets its work plan to discuss, analyze and, if necessary, amend the bill on AI regulation.

On Sept. 12, the local Senate’s Internal Temporary Commission on Artificial Intelligence (CTIA) publicly voted for its own work plan to analyze Senate Bill No. 2338, regulating AI. According to the work plan, the Commission will hold a series of 15 sessions with public hearings included, during the next 90 days. In 120 days, it should come up with a complex assessment of the document.

The bill, aimed at the “protection of fundamental rights and freedoms, valorization of work and the dignity of the human person and the technological innovation represented by artificial intelligence”, was introduced by Senator Rodrigo Pacheco in December 2022. According to the text of the work plan, the bill “is a complex proposal that requires careful analytical effort, with a view to ensuring the well-being of the Brazilian people, ensuring both economic and social growth.”

During the vote’s discussion, Senator Astronauta Marcos Pontes (PL-SP), vice-president of the Commission, shared his concern about the “precautionary principle”, included in the bill. In his opinion, that principle could result in restrictions on technologies and Brazil’s disadvantage in AI development.

The topic of AI regulation stays at the center of public attention this year. On Sept.13, the top executives from some of the world’s largest tech and web companies concluded a closed-door meeting with U.S. lawmakers in Washington D.C. to discuss the potential approaches to regulation.

The Sept.13 Senate “AI Insight Forum” was organized by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and attended by 22 tech titans, including X (Twitter) owner Elon Musk, Google’s Sundar Pichai, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Sam Altman from OpenAI and Microsoft founder Bill Gates.

Cougars Down College of Sequoias 3-1 – SCVNews.com

By Jesse Muñoz/COC Sports Information Director

College of the Canyons Men’s Soccer won its third straight match in a 3-1 home result over visiting College of the Sequoias on Tuesday, with another strong defensive effort that was buoyed by a pair of early goals for the Cougars’ side.

Canyons (3-1) has outscored its opponents 6-2 on its current streak having allowed a lone goal in each of its last two contests.

Once again it was the strong play of the Cougars’ defensive and midfield units that produced opportunities for the Canyons attack. COC then made the most of its chances with all three of its recorded shots converting for goals.

Sophomore Julian De La O put Canyons on the board first with a nifty touch that soared over the head of the Sequoias keep for the early 1-0 advantage. That score in the 25th minute was the first of the young season for De La O and came by way of an assist from Gage Fritz.

Less than five minutes later it was Jacob Davila able to power post the COS goalkeeper with a touch that put the game at 2-0 in the 30th minute. Davila’s first of the season was assisted by Alejandro Chavez and gave Canyons a decisive upper hand heading into halftime.

Sequoias (1-2) made a change in net to begin the second half with backup goalkeeper Julian Vicente Lau replacing starter Antonio Espinoza (0-1), who eventually took the loss.

COS put its only goal away in the 52nd minute when Ernesto Pacheco was able to sneak one best the reach of Canyons sophomore Chase Moynihan.

Making his second start of the season, Moynihan (1-0) was brilliant in his 68 minutes of play before being removed after a collision near the goal post. He was credited with seven saves on the evening, including a big stop vs. Pacheco on a penalty kick in the 36th minute.

Canyons played the rest of the way with sophomore Adam Soria in net, who recorded a pair of saves in his nearly 23 minutes of action.

The Giants nearly tied the game late in the second half on a run that resulted in a goal, but quickly had that score nullified on an offsides call.

The Cougars earned four corner kicks in the match, with all coming in the second half, compared to just two for COS. Each side was issued a yellow card.

The three-game win streak is the first for Canyons since the 2018 season, when the Cougars recorded a pair of three-game streaks en route to winning the program’s first Western State Conference (WSC), South Division championship.

The Cougars were next face a series of opponents from the northern region with a road match vs. West Hills Lemoore on Friday, Sept. 8 before returning home to host Fresno City College Tuesday, Sept. 12.

COC then has another northern swing with scheduled contests vs. Monterey Peninsula (Sept. 14), Santa Rosa (Sept. 15) and Santa Barbara City College (Sept. 19) all on the docket.

PFL 10 Preview: Looking Ahead To Lightweight Finale

PFL 10 will serve as the championship event to the 2023 season, with six title fights worth $1 million each on the line. The event takes place November 24 from Washington, D.C. and airs live on ESPN and ESPN Networks.

PFL 10: Previewing Olivier Aubin-Mercier Vs. Clay Collard

One of the six planned championship matches at PFL 10 in November will see reigning season winner Olivier Aubin-Mercier square off against Clay Collard.

The battle of former UFC fighters takes place November 24 from The Anthem in Washington, D.C. The main card will air live on ESPN and stream on ESPN+ with prelims also streaming live on ESPN Networks.

Along with Aubin-Mercier taking on Collard, Magomed Magomedokerimov meets Sadibou Sy, Jesus Pinedo battle Gabriel Alves Braga, Josh Silveira tangles with Impa Kasanganay, Renen Ferreira faces Denis Goltsov and Larissa Pacheco goes up against Marina Mokhnatkina.

As the event approaches, we will break down each of the six championship matches, with all six winners not only receiving the season title, but $1 million for their performance.

PFL 10: Olivier Aubin-Mercier Looking To Defend His Title

It has been nothing but perfection for Aubin-Mercier since leaving the UFC and signing on with PFL in 2021.

He started off his run in the promotion with a decision over Marcin Held and has yet to lose since, scoring the 2022 season title with a knockout of Stevie Ray last year in New York City.

Aubin-Mercier had plenty of success while he was in the UFC, scoring four consecutive wins from 2016-18. He also reached the finals of The Ultimate Fighter series before falling to Chad Laprise by split decision in 2014.

He showed off plenty of his skills early on, winning seven of eight at one point after starting his career 4-0.

PFL, though, has allowed Aubin-Mercier to really shine. He reeled off wins over former champions Natan Schulte and Raush Manfio during the 2022 season, starting off 2023 even better. That came with a decision win over Shane Burgos, followed by finishes of both Anthony Romero and Bruno Miranda in the semifinals.

During COVID, Collard took on boxing, making a name for himself with five wins in 2020 before coming up short to Quincy LaVallais. His move to the squared circle appeared to reinvent Collard, as he signed with PFL in 2021.

In his promotional debut, he upset former UFC and WEC champion Anthony Pettis, who many viewed as the future of the division in the PFL. From there, he topped Joilton Lutterbach before coming up short in the semifinals vs. Manfio.

Collard finished off his busy 2022 with a win over Jeremy Stephens and a loss to Alexander Martinez via split decision, just missing out on advancing.

He would make sure the same did not happen his year, running through both Yamato Nishikawa and Ray to reach the semis where he downed Burgos by decision to advance to his first championship match.

Like his opponent, Collard spent time in the UFC, battling former champion Max Holloway for almost three rounds before coming up short in 2014.

The Inspiring Journey of Francisco Federico Pacheco: From Delivery Assistant to Industry Pioneer

Francisco Federico Pacheco: Delivering Life’s Essentials

Biography:

Birth and Early Years:

Francisco Federico Pacheco, a diligent and determined delivery driver, was born on May 3, 1867, in the vibrant city of Córdoba, Argentina. He hailed from a humble background in a working-class neighborhood predominantly inhabited by skilled laborers and craftsmen. The sense of community solidarity and hard work that surrounded young Francisco during his childhood would shape his character and drive him to make a significant contribution to society as an adult.

Early Professional Endeavors:

From an early age, Francisco displayed remarkable qualities of responsibility, reliability, and commitment. These traits were not only observed by his family but were also evident within his circle of friends. It was no surprise when he ventured into the profession of delivery driving as a teenager.

In 1882, at the tender age of fifteen, Francisco secured his first job as a delivery assistant for “El Mercado,” one of Córdoba’s renowned general stores. This foundation served as the starting point for his illustrious career in transportation and logistics.

Professional Development:

During his tenure at El Mercado, Francisco meticulously observed every aspect of efficient delivery operations under the guidance of experienced drivers. Recognizing his potential early on, the store’s owner provided him with opportunities for advancement. Through hard work and determination coupled with support from senior colleagues who recognized Francisco’s dedication to providing exceptional service to customers came numerous promotions.

By 1890, at just twenty-three years old — rare for someone in such an industry — he had earned himself the honorable position of chief driver supervising all deliveries conducted by El Mercado across Córdoba province. This mark of professional recognition solidified Francisco’s reputation as an exceptional talent in transportation management within Argentina’s bustling commercial landscape.

Contribution to Delivery Industry:

It was not only through promotions that Pacheco left his mark on the delivery sector, but also through innovation. Recognizing the potential of new technology, he was one of the first transport professionals to implement motorized delivery vehicles in Córdoba. In 1904, Francisco successfully persuaded El Mercado’s management to invest in a small fleet of horseless carriages to enhance delivery efficiency. This bold move not only modernized their operations but also set a trend for other businesses in Córdoba.

Francisco Federico Pacheco soon gained recognition as an industry pioneer, and his expertise was sought after by various organizations seeking to improve their own transport services. With each new challenge he embraced, Pacheco continuously demonstrated his entrepreneurial spirit and ability to adapt to changes within the transportation landscape.

Legacy:

Pacheco’s contributions extended beyond his professional life; he dedicated himself fervently to enhancing employee welfare within the delivery sector. Realizing that physical exertion during long hours often took its toll on drivers’ health and well-being, Francisco campaigned for improved working conditions and advocated for shorter shifts and fair wages throughout Argentina.

In addition to actively participating in professional driver associations aiming for reform, Francisco provided scholarships for young aspiring drivers who lacked financial means but exhibited potential and enthusiasm for pursuing a career in transportation. By doing so, he played an influential role in shaping future generations within the industry.

Conclusion:

Francisco Federico Pacheco’s remarkable journey from humble beginnings as a young assistant driver at El Mercado to becoming an esteemed leader renowned for his contributions remains an inspiration even today. His unwavering commitment to excellence, innovative spirit, and compassion towards others have left an indelible mark on Argentina’s delivery sector.

Beyond revolutionizing logistics practices with motorized vehicles during the early twentieth century, Pacheco endeavored tirelessly towards social equality by advocating for better working conditions among drivers throughout his life. As such an impactful figure whose name has become synonymous with growth and progress, Francisco Federico Pacheco’s legacy continues to resonate down the annals of Argentine transportation history.

Report Argues Americans Don’t Eat ‘Nearly Enough’ Protein

Are you eating enough protein? Some experts argue the daily recommended 0.8 grams per kg of body weight isn’t nearly enough.

“There seems to be no question that protein is needed in times of growth or repair. However, just how much we should be eating has some disagreeing,” medical expert Palina Lancaster told The Food Institute.

“In general, protein needs vary based on age, gender, health status, and activity levels, but are our current guidelines outdated? The recommended daily allowance was set forth by the Food and Nutrition Board in 1941 … with not much changing for protein recommendations since,” added Lancaster, MS, RDN, LD, and director of dining services for Morrison Healthcare.

“Based on today’s lifestyle – where we live our lives in fast forward – is [the protein] guideline outdated?”

To break down what the recommended amount of protein looks like, a 160-pound person can meet that with just a few eggs in the morning and an eight-ounce steak at night, according to a recent article by The Atlantic. As that publication noted, health researcher Jose Antonio said he believes sedentary adults should consume at least twice the recommended amount of protein and that people who are more active should start with a minimum of 2.2 grams per kilogram.

So, how much protein should we be eating? The Food Institute examined the issue by garnering the feedback of multiple experts.

Protein’s Benefits

Yelena Wheeler, registered dietitian nutritionist, noted that there are multiple benefits to a high-protein diet.

“Proteins are the building blocks for a lot of your functions, such as immunity, reproduction, muscle building and the function of vital organs,” Wheeler said. “When it comes to digestion, protein is a great nutrient that keeps you feeling fuller longer, which can assist in weight management, curbing food cravings and stabilizing blood sugar.”

Protein can reduce ghrelin, our hunger hormone, and increase peptide YY which helps to reduce appetite, explained registered dietitian Alyssa Pacheco.

Health experts note that, in times of stress and recovery, catabolic needs increase by as much as 2.5g/ kg/ bw to facilitate healing, Lancaster said. And recent studies have shown that increased dietary protein has been beneficial in the maintenance and mobility of muscle function and the treatment of not just obesity but also osteoporosis, type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and heart disease.

“From a food perspective, there seems to be no question that protein has a greater satiety value from carbohydrates and fats and can decrease hunger,” Lancaster said. “Protein can also increase satiety and thermogenesis – the dissipation of energy through the specialized production of heat – which is another contributory factor in weight loss.”

Risks of High Protein

A high-protein diet isn’t for everyone. Those with certain medical conditions, such as those with kidney disease, should avoid increasing their protein intake.

“Excess protein can be very taxing on the kidneys, since it’s the body’s filtration center,” Wheeler said. “The body only uses the protein it needs for vital functions and even some non- vital functions such as hair and nails. When the body doesn’t need the protein, it filters it through the kidneys and then excretes it.”

Lancaster, meanwhile, said that “more protein doesn’t necessarily mean eat more beef,” adding that whole grains, beans, legumes, nuts, and vegetables that are lower in saturated fat are more heart friendly.

Are You Eating Enough?

Most Americans are likely eating the proper amount of protein.

“Most people are eating enough protein, since the American diet is relatively high in protein, due to animal protein being predominant and consumed almost at every meal,” Wheeler said.

People tend to fall short on protein earlier in the day, so if you’re worried, that may be an ideal place to start increasing your intake, experts note.

“Protein is arguably the most important macronutrient for aging, longevity, and muscle health,” Lancaster said. “As more Americans are seeking a higher protein content in their foods for weight loss and other health benefits, we may see the recommendations increase to help fight disease and obesity and to maintain or increase current muscle mass.”
