Movement and more making meaning: Continuum Dance Project’s ‘Not Eye, Us’

Boston Center for the Arts, Boston, MA.

(Viewed via Vimeo at a later date.)

Part of me has always questioned the term “visual art” – aren’t multiple other art forms visual, dance and beyond? The shared visual nature of dance and “visual art” do, however, give them a synchronicity that artists of both forms can call upon to create something unique and resonant.

That’s exactly what Boston-based Continuum Dance Project did with Fernadina Chan and Adriane Brayton’s Not Eye, Us – and the result spoke to something profound in the human story and human experience. It dove deep into the tension between the individual and the collective, and that the former needs the latter to thrive. The work’s aesthetic cohesion also gave it the potential to be memorable even without perception of such meaning. The company created the work through the Boston Dancemakers Residency at the Boston Center for the Arts.

The work began with the cue of a knock on a pair of closed doors. Brayton then opened the door and allowed audience members into the performance space. There, we saw a solitary dancer facing a large sculpture (by Michael Alfano). It appeared to be made of several large blocks, all in various skin tones and together making up a face. Like the mythological Janus, it had a face in front and back – yet in this design, one face was inverted (chin above nose).

This sculpture certainly brought something abstract and mysterious to the space, an atmosphere to which the low, repetitive tones in the score contributed. That one dancer started to slowly move – intentional, absorbed in each kinetic nuance – until she rose to her feet.

Audience members were gathered around, offering potential for true immersion in the action to come – and, beginning to put that potential to fruition, ensemble members guided those in the audience to form a crowd around the sculpture. Wearing simple flesh-toned leotards and simple slacks (costume design by Soyoung L Kim), they weaved through and around this crowd.

More ensemble members entered, and began moving around the sculpture, even touching it – infusing a sense of exploration. I felt my curiosity peak; I wanted to touch the sculpture, too, to feel its texture. Before I could think about that too much, the dancers began to deconstruct the sculpture — block by block, carrying each with purpose and care. Their gradual speed was striking, even refreshing, in today’s world.

They then assembled the pieces into a circle, and the spotlight fell on a few memorable sections of faster and more dynamic movement. The work took its time to build that speed, size and intensity, and that’s to the good. No need to rush to anything; there’s enough of that in this world, I thought.

The sculpture pieces also played their part, becoming like dance partners: the performers moved on, over, and around them, sometimes allowing them to support weight and at other times fully supporting their own weight. It was never virtuosity for virtuosity’s sake, but to build atmosphere and to share the beauty of the moving body – and never in a way that felt rushed or forced.

They tried on different possibilities with the sculpture pieces in conjunction with the score – becoming playful with the joyful trills of a flute at one point. With these possibilities playing out, various situations were evolving within a community, in their own turn – each with their own tone and atmosphere. I thought back to the face of the sculpture with the various skin tones — the many making up a whole.

In a memorable duet halfway through, Lonnie Stanton and Adriane Brayton came together and apart in space, hardened and softened to each other’s weight. They created a feeling of connection between them, yet a tense one. What is desired can also repel – a relatable experience for many in the audience, I daresay. A following section had two other dancers joining them, covering their eyes at times and at others looking right up to the light, to the heavens. Sometimes we seek to see, to understand and at other points, we simply cannot.

While they were gliding clockwise together, in a circle around a few of those sculpture pieces, I also reflected on the timeless human experience of being joined together in movement – whether it be in “dancing” as we might define it or in some other objective. The circle goes deep in human history — as an emulation of the star in our sky, and a wish for good fortune in the light that brings safety and all sustenance.

With about 15 minutes left, with speed and intensity at (least close to) a climax, the ensemble began reconstructing the sculpture. Light arose (lighting design and technical direction from Anne Dresbach) on a soloist, Sarah Pacheco, as if the sun had arisen and she was the first to bask in its glow. Yet, just like how the sun rises and sets, night leads to a new day, the dancers began deconstruct the sculpture to construct another circle. Cycles continue.

Certain audience members would engage in this cycle, as well. An ensemble member led one audience member to stand on one of the blocks (which, as a good sport, this person seemed to welcome). The ensemble simultaneously made a circle of chairs in which other audience members could sit. In the circle of humanity, for better or worse, none of us ever really gets to be totally passive.

The ensemble glided around the circle again as the lights came down to end the work. The human story, in which we wake to the golden ball of fire in the sky and do our best as individuals dancing in continuity with other individuals, endures. That there could have been a fine ending, but lights came up on some audience members sitting in the circle on top of the sculpture pieces – with ensemble members guiding them in simple, yet richly textured movement.

Ensemble members arose from their seats to join certain audience members in building another little sculpture, a mini replica of the original larger sculpture, on a stool in the center. Together, we build this collection that is humanity. The action here felt like two separate endings, both valuable in context with the themes that the work built. That second ending also managed to find a fresh take on the common “full circle ending”, which can be powerful but also feel overdone.

The work overall was similarly inventive and fresh, but also grounded in something much older and more elemental in the human story. Whichever “eye” through which we see, it is “us” and not “I” in the end. No one can exist in total isolation, at least not their fullest lives for very long. Through cogently calling upon visual art in conjunction with movement, and many more thoughtful creative choices and elements, Continuum Dance Project offered a poignant reminder of these basic, yet resonant truths. We go forward, many “I”s together as one “us”.

This Is How Bad Things Have Become In America…

Can you imagine what tourists must think when they come to this country?  They spend a lot of money to fly all the way over here, and they are hoping to have amazing experiences that they will always remember.  But instead, they quickly realize that the cities that they have come to see are rapidly degenerating.  Today, our major cities are filthy, they are teeming with predators, and violent crime is completely out of control.  Let me give you an example of what I am talking about.  New York City is the financial capital of the world, and millions of tourists still visit each year.  But now the Big Apple has such an enormous rat problem “that rat tourism is fast becoming a boom industry”…

As the city grapples with a major rat problem – sightings doubled last year, prompting the mayor to advertise for a “somewhat bloodthirsty” head rat-catcher in December – the rodent issue is, according to some, New York’s latest must-experience trend.

As visitors to New York demand rat action, some of the city’s tour guides have started to add stops at notoriously infested sites, the New York Post reported this week.

It means that rat tourism is fast becoming a boom industry.

One study concluded that there are about 3 million rats in New York City today.

And with each passing day, the population grows even larger.

The east coast may have rats, but if you want to really have an experience with the crime wave that is sweeping across America the best place to do that is the west coast.

Some tourists from Malta recently found that out the hard way.  When they visited a beach in the San Francisco area, they had all of their possessions stolen from their vehicles within just 10 minutes…

Numerous groups of tourists visiting a beach in San Francisco had all their belongings stolen from their cars, including their passports, while at the ocean for just minutes.

On their second day in San Francisco, a group of tourists from Malta contemplated cutting their trip short and returning to Europe after the brazen smash and grab that occurred in broad daylight within a mere 10-minute window.

Another group from Europe was able to top that.

They had all of their possessions stolen from their vehicle within just 5 minutes…

At the same beach, another European family enjoying a day by the ocean fell prey to a car break-in.

Shocking footage captured by Matty Lopez on Instagram and shared by journalist Arisley T. Pacheco, who documents robbery victims, revealed their car’s trunk vandalized, with shattered glass scattered across the ground.

The man recording the video questions the tourists, ‘So what happened – you went to the beach for five minutes?’ Their response is disheartening: ‘They took everything we had – passports, cameras, phones, iPads, laptops, luggage – everything.’

Whether we like it or not, this is our country now.

Once upon a time, Beverly Hills was world famous for the luxury retailers that lined Wilshire Boulevard.

But now many of those iconic retailers have shut down permanently due to rising crime…

A new video documenting the growing number of high-profile stores in Beverly Hills that have closed recently, places renewed emphasis on the crisis facing the retail sector in most major cities.

The video, posted by an account called cody90210, shows some 11 popular Beverly Hills retail stops now entirely shuttered, including the iconic former Barneys location, Brooks Brothers, All Saints, and the high-end women’s fashion boutique Escada. Both Escada and Barneys filed for bankruptcy in recent years.

The closed shops, which also include convenience retailers like Rite Aid and Chipotle, and even popular workout class option SoulCycle, have shuttered their doors on Wilshire Boulevard, leaving the area bereft of its former appeal. Their sad decline marks a departure from the area’s lengthy heyday, which even saw band Weezer pen a song with the lyrics ‘Beverly Hills, that’s where I want to be.’

I don’t know why anyone would want to live in southern California at this point.

Earlier today, I came across a story about a street vendor in south Los Angeles that was viciously assaulted by a group of thugs in broad daylight “in front of his 8-year-old special needs daughter”…

A group of masked males brutally attacked a street vendor in front of his 8-year-old special needs daughter and stole all his money in south Los Angeles over the weekend, KTLA-TV reported.

These criminals have no respect for anyone or anything.

They just want to take what you have.

Of course this isn’t just a west coast phenomenon.  In Washington D.C., carjackings are up more than 100 percent so far this year…

Washington D.C. has witnessed a staggering 670 reported carjackings in 2023 so far, representing 100 percent+ increase in the offense across the U.S. Capitol compared to the same period last year. The city’s Democrat-dominated city council, however, remains on vacation until September 15 and has shown no signs of trying to return early to solve the matter. In 2018, there were 140 carjackings, jumping to 360 by 2020, with total of 485 in 2022. The city has also seen a 113 percent increase in carjackings involving a firearm compared to 2022. A total of 513 incidents involved a gun, representing 77 percent of all D.C. carjackings. Only 157 incidents did not involve a firearm.

Things are even worse in Baltimore.

One young mother in the city that recently spoke to FOX45 News is deeply frustrated because she can’t seem to find a way to keep her 14-year-old daughter from stealing cars…

As another school year begins, a Baltimore mom isn’t scheduling after-school activities for her 14-year-old daughter; instead, she’s scheduling court appearances and trying to figure out what – if anything – will get her daughter to stop stealing cars and follow the rules of her home detention.

Rae spoke with FOX45 News about her 14-year-old daughter on the condition of not using her last name or showing her face on camera. In return, Rae spoke candidly about her daughter’s behavior, experience with police, and the Department of Juvenile Services.

Apparently this 14-year-old girl is really good at stealing vehicles, and authorities refuse to keep her locked up because she is not an adult.

Hopefully she will find a way to turn her life around.

But the reality of the matter is that there are millions of others just like her.

Our cities are being overwhelmed by hordes of young people that are totally out of control, and meanwhile police departments are shrinking.

In fact, some small towns have eliminated their police departments entirely because it has become so difficult to find people that are willing to serve in this environment…

America is in the midst of a police officer shortage that many in law enforcement blame on the two-fold morale hit of 2020 — the coronavirus pandemic and criticism of police that boiled over with the murder of George Floyd by a police officer. From Minnesota to Maine, Ohio to Texas, small towns unable to fill jobs are eliminating their police departments and turning over police work to their county sheriff, a neighboring town or state police.

What is going to happen if the number of police continues to shrink but the number of criminals continues to rise?

I think that we all know the answer to that question.

Great chaos is coming to this country, and it isn’t going to be pretty.

Our society has been trending the wrong way for a long time, and now we have reached a major tipping point.

What to do with your vegetable beds in fall | Livingetc

Thank you for signing up to LivingEtc. You will receive a verification email shortly.

There was a problem. Please refresh the page and try again.

Even though the gardening season is slowly winding down and your kitchen counter is (hopefully) stacked high with a bumper harvest of fresh produce, your vegetable growing activities don’t have to stop now.

If you’re wondering what to do with your vegetable beds or vegetable container garden in fall the good news is you can continue to grow crops right through winter if you want to. Choose the right varieties and they will thrive whatever your climate.

Alternatively if you’re looking forward to taking a break from your vegetable beds now is the time to make sure they’re in the best shape possible before you pack away your spade and head indoors to browse the seed catalogs and plan what you’re going to grow in spring.

Our easy 7 point checklist on what to do with your vegetable beds in fall works either way. Simply skip over points 2 and 6 if you’re taking a winter break.

1. Clean out spent crops

(Image credit: Jacky Parker Photography/Getty Images)

‘It can be tricky to tell when it’s time to pull out a crop,’ says horticulturalist Gail Pabst, who works for the National Garden Bureau . ‘Sometimes vegetables like peas and beans keep producing a few pods here and there, and you may hesitate to pull them out. I remove vegetable plants as soon as production declines. This means you can make way for the fall vegetable garden.’

Remove any spent stems and debris to avoid harboring pests and diseases. Cut down the dying leaves of potatoes, pumpkins and squashes once you’ve harvested the remaining crop. When summer produce like tomatoes are finished they can be added to the compost bin as long as they are disease free. Remove, clean and store any canes you’ve used as supports.

If you have grown beans or peas you can simply cut them back and leave the roots in the earth to decompose. They will feed the soil as they’re packed with nitrogen.

2. Plan your fall vegetable garden

Arugula is a good choice for a tasty winter crop

Timing is everything when planning a fall garden. Check your expected first frost date in your area, and then count backwards to know when to sow seeds or plants. ‘Look for the “days to maturity” info on seed packets or plant tags to know when to start your fall veggie garden to ensure a good harvest before the first freeze,’ says Gail Pabst. ‘Consider adding low tunnels. These covers help protect crops from cold and extend the harvest season.’  These low tunnels on Amazon will be perfect.

Cooler temperatures not only reduce the amount of time spent watering and the likelihood of pest infestations, but many fall crops taste best when kissed by frost. ‘Some crops, like arugula, taste bitter and bolt when temperatures rise and daylight lengthens, but taste sweetly savory during chilly autumn days,’ says Gail. ‘Kale and Brussels sprouts actually taste the sweetest after a frosty coating.’

Always check the growing information on seed packets or plant tags to see what temperatures your chosen vegetables can tolerate.

3. Dig over the soil in your vegetable beds

It’s always best to work the soil in fall, particularly if it’s a heavy consistency, as the task will be that much harder in spring. This will make sure the soil is in the best condition for an early start next year.

Pick a sunny day and work over the surface. Don’t dig too deep as this can harm the microbial life in the soil. You can leave large clumps and the frost will do the rest of the work for you by breaking it down.

If you run out of time and can’t work the soil in fall, you can make do by adding a layer of mature compost to the surface followed by a layer of mulch that will remain in place all winter.

4. Plant a cover crop if your plot is going to be dormant

Planted in late summer, crimson clover provides good groundcover and weed control. It looks good too

If you’re more of a summer gardener and your vegetable beds are going to be dormant during fall and winter, now is your chance to inject nutrients into your soil and improve its structure.

Plants grown expressly for building soil are called cover crops or ‘green manure’ and there is still time to sow them. They will be ready for digging in to the soil early next spring. They add carbon and nitrogen to your soil, increase the organic matter, and stop weeds in their tracks.

Reliable cover crop varieties include fall rye, crimson clover, and oats or barley. It beats looking at a patch of bare soil all winter too.

5. Feed the soil if you’re planting vegetables in fall

It’s time to enrich the soil in your vegetable plot, especially if you plan to extend your growing season through fall and winter. The scraps you’ve been adding to your composter all summer long should be good and ready, and now is the time to spread a thick layer on your cleared and dug vegetable beds, along with leaf mold or any other soil improvers such as pellet compost.

You’ll know when your compost is good to go as it will have a dark crumbly texture, as well as smelling rich and loamy. Adding this to your vegetable beds in fall will help improve soil structure, balance pH, and feed healthy micro-organisms found in it. There’s no need to turn it in, as rain will wash nutrients down to root level, while worms will also help by pulling down organic matter.

6. Plant a selection of fall vegetables

Kohlrabi is a favorite to plant in fall vegetable beds

(Image credit: Liz Minkert Johnson/Getty Images)

If you live in cooler parts of the country you’ll want to plant fast-finish crops that are ready for harvest before frost arrives. ‘Leafy lettuce greens grow super-fast,’ say the team at Burpee. ‘You can harvest in just a few weeks and keep coming back for a month or more. ‘

Fall vegetables to consider growing include broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, collards, kale, kohlrabi, and lettuce. According to Burpee, if you live in a warmer climate, it’s much more flexible. ‘All of these can be planted in fall for an all-winter harvest. They love the cooler temperatures and can even take some frost.’

Extending your harvest is easy with coverings built to fit your vegetable bed. A simple cloche can help insulate crops from winter chill. A sturdier cold frame built to cover your whole bed will also protect crops.

7. Mulch any exposed soil

If you have planted crops to grow over winter, it’s important to cover up any exposed soil to hold in warmth. The best way to do this is by adding a protective mulch to your soil. A layer of organic matter spread over the soil surface helps to insulate plants and keep weeds away.

You can use a good thick layer (around 2 inches) of leaf mold or straw. Just pile the stuff on top of the soil, but do keep an eye on it as it will rot down fairly quickly, and top up if necessary. You can also use a single layer of cardboard as a mulch.

Tucking mulch around winter vegetable plants and over exposed soil will also help reduce weeds in spring.

That’s it when it comes to what to do with your vegetable beds in fall. Then all you have to do is either keep an eye on the vegetables you’ve just planted, especially if extreme weather threatens, or alternatively sit back and enjoy the break before you head back to the vegetable bed in spring.

Drug cartels exploit Ecuador’s banana industry to ship cocaine | CTV News

Men walk through a lush plantation between Ecuador’s balmy Pacific coast and its majestic Andes, lopping hundreds of bunches of green bananas from groaning plants twice their height.

Workers haul the bunches to an assembly line, where the bananas are washed, weighed and plastered with stickers for European buyers. Owner Franklin Torres is monitoring all activity on a recent morning to make sure the fruit meets international beauty standards — and ever more important, is packed for shipment free of cocaine.

Torres is hypervigilant because Ecuador is increasingly at the confluence of two global trades: bananas and cocaine.

The South American country is the world’s largest exporter of bananas, shipping about 6.5 million metric tons (7.2 tons) a year by sea. It is also wedged between the world’s largest cocaine producers, Peru and Colombia, and drug traffickers find containers filled with bananas the perfect vehicle to smuggle their product.

Drug traffickers’ infiltration of the industry that is responsible for about 30% of the world’s bananas has contributed to unprecedented violence across this once-peaceful nation. Shootings, homicides, kidnappings and extortions have become part of daily life, particularly in the Pacific port city and banana-shipping hub of Guayaquil.

“This is everyone’s responsibility: the person who transports it, the person who buys it, the person who consumes it,” vendor Dalia Chang, 59, a lifelong resident of Guayaquil, said of the cocaine trade. “They all share responsibility. They have ruined our country.”

The country, which is not a major cocaine producer, was especially rattled when a presidential candidate known for his tough stance on organized crime and corruption — Fernado Villavicencio — was fatally shot at the end of an Aug. 9 campaign rally. He had accused the Ecuadorian Los Choneros gang and its imprisoned leader, whom he linked to Mexico’s Sinaloa cartel, of threatening him and his campaign team days before the assassination.

In addition to its proximity to cocaine production, cartels from Mexico, Colombia and the Balkans have settled in Ecuador because it uses the U.S. dollar and has weak laws and institutions, along with a network of long-established gangs like Los Choneros that are eager for work.

Authorities say Ecuador also gained prominence in the global cocaine trade after political changes in Colombia last decade. Coca bush fields in Colombia have been moving closer to the border with Ecuador due to the breakup of criminal groups after the 2016 demobilization of the rebel group Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, better-known by their Spanish acronym FARC.

A record 2,304 metric tons of cocaine was manufactured in 2021 around the world, mostly in Colombia, Peru and Bolivia. That year, nearly a third of the cocaine seized by customs authorities in Western and Central Europe came from Ecuador, double the amount reported in 2018, according to a United Nations report citing data from the World Customs Organization. Large drug busts have become more frequent and within the past month, European authorities have made record-setting busts after inspecting containers carrying bananas from Ecuador.

Authorities on Aug. 25 announced Spain’s biggest cocaine haul yet: 9.5 metric tons hidden among cardboard boxes of bananas from Ecuador in a refrigerated container. Dutch officials also made their country’s largest-ever cocaine seizure last month — nearly 8 metric tons — in a container of Ecuadorian bananas. Authorities in Greece and Italy also announced seizures of cocaine hidden in Ecuadorian bananas this year.

Bananas headed to Europe are boxed at plantations, loaded into trucks that take them to massive warehouses in and around Guayaquil and transferred to maritime containers driven to an area port.

Then the ships head northeast to the Panama Canal, cross to the Caribbean Sea, and go east across the Atlantic.

Knowingly or not, banana growers, exporters, shipping corporations, port operators, private security companies, customs agents, agriculture officials, police, and buyers offer opportunities that drug traffickers have exploited.

Some traffickers have created front companies to mimic legitimate banana exporters, while others have acquired legitimate businesses, including plantations. They have found companies willing to be complicit in trafficking. They also have paid off, threatened or kidnapped truck drivers and other workers to help get cocaine into shipments.

Other traffickers have corrupted or intimidated police, customs agents, security guards and port workers to assist with — or ignore — tampering with containers at the ports.

Drug trafficking has contributed to the number of violent deaths in Ecuador, which doubled from 2021 to 2022, when 4,600 died, the most ever recorded in a year. The country is on track to break the annual record again, with 3,568 violent deaths tallied in the first half of 2023.

In Guayaquil, where maritime shipping containers are part of the landscape, people live in fear these days. Pedestrians don’t dare take their phones out of their pockets. Convenience stores have floor-to-ceiling metal bars that prevent customers from entering from the sidewalk. Restaurants that survived the pandemic close early.

Along with the rise in homicides, the amount of cocaine seized at the country’s ports has increased, too, reaching 77.4 metric tons last year. That is more than three times the amount seized in 2020.

National Police Gen. Pablo Ramirez, Ecuador’s national director of anti-drug investigations, attributed the change to increased smuggling, not better enforcement.

Police data also show that of last year’s total, a record 47.5 metric tons of cocaine were found in shipments of bananas, even though the fruit’s exports dropped 6.4% compared to 2021.

No more than 30% of containers is currently inspected at Ecuadorian ports, a process done manually or with drug-sniffing dogs. President Guillermo Lasso’s government says it wants to use scanners on entire containers. Twelve of those machines were supposed to be operating already but Ramirez said that has not happened yet.

Ramirez said he expects all ports to have operational scanners by mid-2024. He said two ports have tested the scanners to smooth out internal procedures and train the people who will be working with the machines.

The operator of the largest port in Guayaquil, Contecon Guayaquil S.A., turned down Associated Press requests for an interview and access to the port to see existing security procedures. In response to written questions about the measures, spokeswoman Alexandra Pacheco said in a statement that the operator entered into an agreement with the National Police in 2022 to among other things “reinforce operations in the port.” She added that the operator plans to spend about $15 million on the scanners.

Jose Hidalgo, executive director of the Association of Banana Exporters of Ecuador, said the industry faces greater exposure to trafficking than other commodity exports because of the volume of containers that it uses.

“It is because of bananas that there are so many ports,” Hidalgo said. “It opens routes to other export products.”

He explained that exporters spend about $100 million annually on security measures, which include surveillance cameras at plantations, GPS monitoring of trucks and the identification of land routes that require police patrols to keep criminals away.

Nonetheless, some exporters have been accused of being complicit or directly involved in trafficking cocaine.

Torres, the plantation owner, would like to see that type of exporter kicked out of the industry. But there is no regulation that can be used to revoke a company’s banana-exporting permission when the business is tied repeatedly to drug trafficking.

“It bothers me so much,” Torres said. “My people work with bananas, they don’t work with drugs. It’s a flagship product, the best in the world, and to see it tainted like that is unfortunate.”

Voces de Guiraa’: Giving disabled children a voice

The names of children mentioned below have been changed to safeguard their privacy.

María was only a few months old when the seizures started. As electrical energy flooded her brain, the convulsions rendered her body and mind unresponsive to her family around her. As she grew older, María struggled to stand, walk, and communicate. After multiple tests, she was finally diagnosed with cerebral palsy, the most common movement and motor disability in children.

According to the Cerebral Palsy Guide, an online resource produced by expert writers and researchers, early intervention is critical when helping children with cerebral palsy. There is no cure for the disease, but certain medical treatments and therapy can make a big difference for a child suffering from symptoms. Anti-convulsant drugs, for example, can also help with mood swings and emotional outbursts, which María was particularly prone to. The medicine, however, is very expensive.

Like many families who have a child with a disability, María’s parents were forced to choose between the many treatments and medical services she needed to help treat the severity of her condition based on the cost. Lacking financial support, the outlook for María’s development was bleak until news of her case reached Viridiana Pacheco. A young speech therapist originally from Mexico City, Pacheco had just relocated to Oaxaca to work with disadvantaged children. She describes the moment she heard about María:

“There was one case seven years ago that really built the foundations of Voces de Guiraa’ and what I wanted to do in Oaxaca. There was a girl (María) who needed medicine to help with her convulsions. We organized a meeting to see how I might be able to help her with her development.

In her first session, her parents told me the convulsions were getting worse. María was incredibly sensitive, angry, and confused. It was really hard, and at times, impossible to work with her.”

Viridiana works with a child. (Gordon Cole-Schmidt)

Pacheco knew the life-changing impact that cerebral palsy medicine could have on María’s daily life, especially when combined with therapy. Soon after meeting with María, Pacheco began reaching out to her contacts and asking neighbors and old friends for support, but before long, she hit a brick wall. One evening in 2016, she explained her frustration to Amy Burns and Tim Shepherd, two friends who had moved to Mexico from the United States and Australia, respectively.

“I remember seeing how touched Amy and Tim were when I told them about the case,” Pacheco says. “They told me that they would do whatever they could to pay for her treatment.”

The following day, Amy and Tim began an online fundraising drive. Not long after, enough money had been raised to pay for María’s anticonvulsant drugs as well as years of speech and physical therapy.

Buoyed by the wave of interest, the trio wanted to help more children in Oaxaca and decided they would create a charitable organization, Voces de Guiraa’, to help more families benefit from financial and emotional support. Since its foundation in 2017, Voces of Guiraa´ (meaning ‘together’ in Zapotec) has raised tens of thousands of dollars for children in Oaxaca to receive medical care and therapy for cerebral palsy, which would not have been accessible otherwise.

Early intervention is essential in many cases of developmental disabilities. (Gordon Cole-Schmidt)

The problem of financing care is certainly not just limited to families in Mexico. In the U.S., soaring care costs are creating greater difficulties for families of children with disabilities. A recent poll carried out by the Disabled Children’s Partnership of over 2,000 parents and carers found that just one in three children with a disability are getting enough support from their educational settings; just one in five have the correct level of support from their health services, and one in seven are getting adequate social support.

In the United Kingdom, recent reports by the Department of Education, published at Bedford Today,  uncovered a sharp drop in the rate at which children with disabilities receive education, health, and care plans. The disability charity Sense said delays in creating these plans will see thousands of young children “fall through the cracks” of the welfare system.

While government support is available in Mexico, long waiting lists for treatment in poorer southern states, including Oaxaca, mean it can take years for a child with disabilities to be correctly diagnosed and receive a treatment plan. If children with disabilities do not receive the care they need from the earliest age, they can “suffer incredibly when they are older,” according to Pacheco.

Children with disabilities can find themselves trapped and pushed to the outer boundaries of society from a young age. Rejected for being seen as different, they are also often targets of physical and mental abuse which can lead to damaging psychological consequences throughout their lives.

Without the power to talk and express themselves, children suffering from motor disabilities can become voiceless victims, frustrated and disheartened by their inability to communicate. Developing emotional connections becomes a lofty ambition, and exclusion and segregation become an accepted part of their daily routine.

Seeing how much Pacheco’s first case (María) meant to her, and how it had started a chain reaction that created her foundation, I’m tentative to ask what became of María’s story. Resolutely, Pacheco replies:

“I am so proud of her! [María] is 9 now and is talking, interacting, and communicating with people. She is a completely different person to the young child that I met 6 years ago. She has confidence, and balance and has control over her life and became so receptive to therapies as she grew older.”

Viridiana Pacheco hopes more and more people will talk about the benefits of therapy for children with disabilities in Mexico. A deeper discussion of the positive effects of therapy on the most vulnerable and in-need children can only help to break down bureaucratic barriers to state funding and public awareness, which will undoubtedly change the lives of children with disabilities for the better.

Business Blogging: Do’s And Do n’ts.

The blogosphere (on the internet neighborhood of blog sites as well as their works) has actually advertised a brand-new interaction device that can affect public point of view of a business. Business are sluggish to respond to the expanding reliability of business blog sites as interaction networks.

A current listing of Fortune 500 business blog sites reveals that just 5% of the United States’ firms have actually signed up with the blogging field.
