A South End Guide to Hispanic Heritage Month 2023 | South Seattle Emerald

In the last 10 years, Latinos have become one of the fastest-growing communities in King County, and with that comes their booming cultural scene. The culture — their arts, music, and dances — are particularly on display during Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs from Sep. 15 to Oct. 15. September is when countries like Mexico, Chile, and El Salvador celebrate their Independence from Spain. Last week, Sea Mar hosted a parade in South Park and organized El Grito (the shout) — a celebration of Mexican independence — in Seattle Center, but that marks just the beginning.

Across the region, Latino communities and organizations are offering a wide variety of ways to honor and enjoy the culture of our Latino neighbors. From festivals and dance performances to the history of tacos, the Emerald has them noted below.

Want your Hispanic Heritage event included? Let us know at [email protected].

A little further south in Tacoma, also as part of MEXAM NW, Latinxs Unidos of South Sound and Tacoma Arts Live are hosting Festival Latinx. On Oct. 14, attendees will get their fair share of performances, music, and arts. A mercadito will also be offering artisanal gifts and food to buy and enjoy.

Salsa and bachata aficionados, look no further than SeaTac’s Hilton Hotel. From Oct. 12 to 14, the hotel will be bursting with dancers as professionals and amateurs gather for the Seattle Latin Dance Festival. Sponsored by Bellevue Dance Studio, the festival will have workshops and boot camps with pros during the day. Later in the night, expect performances and social dances.

Burien has a thriving Latino community. Take a short walk around its downtown and you’ll likely see dozens of Latino-owned businesses, from the MarBel Boutique, its windows brimming with quinceañera dresses, to Botas Exoticas El Lagarto with its storefront stacked with cowboy boots. So it makes sense that Burien will host its own event honoring Latinos on Sep. 23. B-Town Fiesta will be a family-friendly event at Burien Town Square Park, with vendors, live music, and a beer garden. The Fiesta runs from 10 a.m. until 9:30 p.m.

La Catrina is an iconic figure in Mexican culture. She was brought to life by the Mexican artist and printmaker José Guadalupe Posada Aguilar (José Posada) a successful printermaker and lithographer who died before he could see her in print. La Catrina was published in a satirical magazine in 1913. Today she is most often associated with Day of the Dead celebrations, but when Posada created her she was called “La Calavera Garbancera” — a reference to Mexicans who, by dressing more European, deny their own Mexican roots. Mind you this was during the Mexican Revolution, a time when classism was on every Mexican’s mind. Today, La Catrina is part of Mexican identity, a reminder of their revolutionary roots. Come see all the Catrinas in their stylish glory at Seattle’s Town Hall from Nov. 2 to 5.

The annual Seattle Latino Film Festival begins Oct. 6 and runs until Oct. 14. The festival will take place in five venues across King County including The Beacon Cinema on Rainier Avenue and Renton’s Regal Cinema. Its red-carpet opening night will be attended by Undocumented director Christian de la Cortina, and Mexican actor Jorge Martinez Colorado. The film Undocumented — which follows the journey of a Mexican journalist seeking asylum in the U.S. who gets caught up in the abusive world of under-the-table work on a Vermont dairy farm — is just one of many movies listed on the festival’s marquee.

To celebrate their 50th anniversary, Bailadores de Bronce, one of Washington’s legacy folkloric dance troupes will perform a variety of regional dances from around Mexico at the Moore Theatre. Nearly every one of Mexico’s 32 states has its own regional and traditional dance with its own style of dress and choreography. The group is well-known around Washington, and it’s their busy season as they perform across Seattle for different Hispanic Heritage Month events.

UFC Contender Series Odds: Angel Pacheco vs. Danny Silva prediction, pick, how to watch – 9/26/2023

Contender Series Week 8: Danny Barlow vs. Raheam Forest continues on the fight card with a bout in the featherweight division between Angel Pacheco and Danny Silva. Pacheco is coming into this fight on a four-fight winning streak with over a year of layoff as he comes into this fight meanwhile, Silva is coming off a first-round knockout as he comes into his first appearance on the Contender Series. With that said, check out our UFC odds for our Pacheco-Silva prediction and pick.

Angel Pacheco (7-1) is a very well-balanced fighter who has won seven of his eight bouts with all seven of those wins coming inside the distance. His ability to mix things up on the feet and on the mat is what is going to make him very dangerous in this matchup on the Contender Series against a heavy hitter like Danny Silva.

Danny Silva (7-1) has some heavy hands with five of his seven wins coming by knockout with his most recent victory being a a quick first-round knockout as he comes into the biggest fight of his career. He will be looking to add another highlight reel knockout on his resume when he steps into the octagon on this week’s episode of the Contender Series.

Here are the UFC Odds, courtesy of DraftKings.

Contender Series Week 8 Odds: Angel Pacheco-Danny Silva Odds

Angel Pacheco: +180

Danny Silva: -218

How to Watch Angel Pacheco vs. Danny Silva

TV: ESPN+

Stream: ESPN+

Time: 8:00 p.m. ET/ 5:00 p.m. PT

Why Angel Pacheco Will Win

Angel Pacheco is a game opponent who is skilled everywhere and he has won seven of his eight professional fights. He is coming off a very good win against Vilson Ndregjoni who he submitted in round two after fighting through some early adversity. He is comfortable fighting in space, using his movement and his jab to keep his opponent at his range and counter as they try to come forward.

His opponent Danny Silva is going to give him the stand-up striking affair that he wants and lucky for him that Silva isn’t very defensively sound as he is the aggressor in the fight. Pacheco will need to do his best to keep his back off the cage by utilizing his side-to-side movement and counter as Silva marches forward until he cracks his chin and potentially puts him away.

Why Danny Silva Will Win

Danny Silva is your prototypical pressure fighter much like his main training partners Cub Swanson and Dan Argueta. They are all going to come forward, and throw some heavy heat, but not utilize a ton of head movement when they do so. They utilize that pressure to eventually break their opponents down and much like Swanson and Argueta, Silva has exceptional cardio to get along with his pressure style of fighting.

Pacheco seems game enough to go out there and slug it out with Danny Silva. The thing is Pacheco was dropped badly in the first round of his last fight but he was able to weather the early storm and got the finish. For Silva, it looks like he can take a punch, and when he does he is throwing immediately after. If Silva can avoid being a punching bag as he attempts to march forward he can wear down Pacheco eventually knocking him out midway through the fight.

Final Angel Pacheco-Danny Silva Prediction & Pick

This is my pick for the fight of the night when these two featherweights get locked in the octagon together. Angel Pacheco has some very good fundamentals to go along with good movement on the feet. He is a crisp jab that will come in handy as Danny Silva attempts to just march forward. Utilizing his reach advantage and that jab will help keep Silva from getting in his preferred range and turning the fight into a brawl.

Silva is certainly going to put on a show for the fight fans on this Tuesday’s episode of the Contender Series when he takes on Angel Pacheco. He’s going to march Pacheco down and throw a ton of volume until he breaks his opponent much like he will do here against Pacheco. Ultimately, Pacheco will attempt to keep this fight at his preferred distance where he can pump out his jab and calf kicks to counter Silva as he comes forward but once Silva starts letting his hands go and connects on Pacheco he will crack his chin and rock him hard eventually finishing him inside two rounds and getting his UFC contract.

Final Angel Pacheco-Danny Silva Prediction & Pick: Danny Silva (-218)

Could Arajet Be Close To Launching Flights To The US?

  • Arajet believes it is close to receiving authorization to launch flights to the US, aiming to service New York JFK, Miami, and San Juan (Puerto Rico), where there are large Dominican diasporas.
  • Arajet currently offers flights to 20 destinations across the Americas, but their long-time ambition is to reach the highly profitable Dominican diaspora in the US.
  • Arajet’s vision for services to the US involves two phases: serving major markets with tourism demand and the Dominican diaspora, and expanding to other cities in the US with the range of their Boeing 737 MAX 8 fleet.

The Dominican ultra-low-fare carrier Arajet believes it is close to receiving authorization to launch flights to the United States. If approved, Arajet could begin servicing New York JFK, Miami, and San Juan (Puerto Rico) – three US cities with large Dominican diasporas.

How close are we?

As Arajet celebrates its first anniversary (it launched flights on September 15, 2022), the airline’s management indicated that the airline is ready to enter the American market. The United States has long held appeal for the airline, and approval would be the perfect birthday gift.

Currently, Arajet offers flights to 20 destinations in 15 countries across the Americas, reaching northern destinations such as Toronto and Montreal in Canada, and cities as far south as Buenos Aires, Santiago de Chile, and São Paulo. It employs a Boeing 737 MAX 8 fleet anchored on its base in Santo Domingo’s Las Americas International Airport (SDQ).

But the long-time ambition of Arajet is to launch potentially profitable routes to reach the Dominican diaspora in the United States. Currently, US-based companies such as JetBlue serve most flights between the Dominican Republic and the United States.

In March 2023, Arajet requested the Department of Transportation authorization to “engage in scheduled foreign air transportation.” The airline proposed to commence scheduled service to the United States in 2023’s fall season, intending to employ its MAX 8 fleet configured with 185 seats.

On Tuesday, Victor Pacheco, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at Arajet, said the company is ready to enter the American market and hopes the US government allows travel to the first three new routes that have been requested. He added,

“We believe we are very close to achieving the open skies treaty between the Dominican Republic and the United States.”

Arajet is supporting efforts in the Dominican Republic to negotiate an Open Skies agreement with the United States, allowing greater flexibility in service between the two countries.

The uneven market share

The data released by the Dominican Republic’s Civil Aviation Board (JAC) shows that US-based carriers dominate the market between the two countries. In fact, the top four airlines with the most traffic carried to and from the Caribbean country in July 2023 were US airlines.

JetBlue Airways carried 405,234 passengers in July, followed by American Airlines (189,361), United Airlines (125,762), and Delta Air Lines (118,237). Arajet, the only Dominican-based company in the top ten, is eighth with 45,537 passengers.

The Dominican Republic’s main destinations are New York JFK, Miami and Newark. These three cities concentrate 34% of the total passenger traffic in and out of the Caribbean nation. In their request to the DOT, Arajet said authorizing their service to the United States would “introduce a degree of balance to the market and provide the traveling public with additional attractive low-fare travel options.”

A two-step vision

Arajet’s vision for services to the United States is described in two phases. The first phase will be to serve the largest markets with tourism demand and the Dominican diaspora, including New York, Miami, and Puerto Rico.

The second phase will see new services to other cities that do not currently have direct services to the Dominican Republic. With the MAX 8’s range (3,500 nautical miles or 6,480 kilometers), Arajet can reach almost every destination in the United States (except for Alaska and Hawaii).

‘Laudate Deum,’ to be title of Pope’s Apostolic Exhortation on climate – Vatican News

By Father Johan Pacheco

The name of Pope Francis’ next Apostolic Exhortation on the environment will be Laudate Deum, Pope Francis has revealed.

The Holy Father shared this on Thursday, Sept. 21 when addressing in the Vatican some 200 participants in the meeting of the Rectors of public and private universities of Latin America and the Caribbean, sponsored by the Red de Universidades para el Cuidado de la Casa Común and the Pontifical Commission for Latin America on Sept. 20 and 21 at the Augustinianum on the theme “Organizing Hope,” with the participation of some Prefects and Secretaries of Dicasteries of the Holy See.

During the occasion, the Pope reflected on various issues raised by the educators, including climate change, migration, and the culture of waste.

The Holy Father urged them to be creative in the formation of young people from today’s realities and challenges.  The rectors asked the Pope questions on environmental and climate issues to which he responded by emphasizing the deplorable “throwaway culture or culture of abandonment.” He explained that it is “a culture of misuse of natural resources, which does not accompany nature to full development and does not let it live. This culture of abandonment,” he said, “harms all of us.”

The proper use of nature

Pope Francis also described it from the human point of view: “There is a throwaway culture that is always going on, there is a lack of education to use the things that remain, to remake them, to replace them in the order of the common use of things. And this throwaway culture also affects nature.” And he insisted on the urgency of returning to the proper use of nature: “Today humanity is tired of this misuse of nature, and must return to the path of good use of nature. And how we use nature, a word that may sound strange, I would say: dialogue with nature, dialogue.”

To this end, the Pope urged universities to create networks of awareness. “And at this point, you use a very beautiful word, which is organizing hope.” “Reclaiming and organizing hope,” Pope Francis said, “I like this phrase that you have said to me and one cannot help but consider it in the context of integral ecology, in this dimension according to which the youth of today have the right to a balanced cosmos and they have the right to hope and we have to help them to organize this hope, to make very serious decisions from this moment.”

Nature is for all

Pope Francis also alluded to a “regenerative culture,” identifying it as the fruit “of an economic crisis that is not always at the service of the development of the most needy. I would say that sometimes, or many times, it is not at the service of the development of everyone and creates more people in need. It is a culture of dispossession, we all have the right to the use of nature,” to dominion over nature to make it grow and use it for the common good.

The Pope expressed his concern about “some abstract scientific type universities” that “do not use reality but science, an abstract science, not real, and so they walk on economic theories, social theories, everything is theory, but they never land” on the reality of the most needy. “The discarded, the outcasts, are men and women, whole peoples that we leave on the street like garbage, are they not? We have to be aware that we use the wealth of nature only for small groups through socio-economic theories that do not integrate nature, the discarded.”

“Laudate Deum,” the title of the next Apostolic Exhortation

Pope Francis called for alternatives to help overcome the environmental crisis and cited as an example the use of solar panels to provide electricity to Paul VI Hall and other areas of the Vatican. “We have to be very creative in these things to protect nature” because obviously electricity is made on the basis of coal or other elements, which always create problems in nature itself and “the young people we train have to become leaders on this point, convinced.”

In his reflection, the Pope announced the name of his next Apostolic Exhortation: Laudate Deum, which will be published on the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi, Oct. 4: “a look at what has happened and say what needs to be done,” he said.

Human and environmental degradation go together

The Holy Father also denounced the process of degradation that humanity is undergoing.

“There is a process of environmental degradation, we can say that in general. But this leads down, to the bottom of the ravine. Degradation of living conditions, degradation of the values that justify these living conditions, because they go together.” And he explained that “inequality” is also “evident in the lack of access to basic necessities, and from here come all those visions that sociologically, in fact, without naming them, make women, indigenous peoples, Africans, people with fewer capabilities.”

One of the forms of degradation and inequality, Pope Francis denounced, is “extractivism,” that is, the hoarding of natural resources. “When this extractivist model goes on and enters people,” he pointed out, “I extract the dignity of people, and this happens, never a geological extractivist model, so to speak, goes alone, it is always accompanied by the human extractivist model, the dignity of the person is extracted, they are slaves, said in another word. And please get this into children’s heads, value education, so that they can evaluate these situations and can say clearly that this is called slavery.”

Politics as the noblest vocation

Faced with this situation, the Pope called on university rectors to promote education in humanistic values and fraternal dialogue, helping students “enter politics” as a “noble vocation.”

“Let us not forget that the noblest vocation of the human person is politics. Let us train our young people to be politicians, in the broadest sense of the term. Let us not forget that the noblest vocation of the human person is politics. We must train our young people to be politicians, in the broadest sense of the word. Not only to act in a political party, which is a small group, but to have political openness and to know how to dialogue with political groups with maturity, politics is not a disease, in my opinion it is the noblest vocation in a society, because it is the one that carries out development processes.”

A human and Christian response to the migration crisis

The Pope also spoke about the current migration crisis.

“The migration drama in Europe today is extremely serious, extremely serious. And it cannot be solved by a mutual aid society, no. Here there is a humanistic and Christian question. Here there is a humanistic issue and a political decision, there are decisions that are human and Christian.”

“I ask you,” the Pope told the rectors, “out of respect for suffering humanity, to address this issue in your universities, but with the human density that it has. “So in summary I say this to you: migrants must be welcomed, accompanied, promoted and integrated. If we fail to integrate the migrant, we fail,” he added.

“I want to say all this about migrants because the problem of migrants is very close to my heart,” the Pope said again. He went on to say that “it is criminal what is being done today, here in Europe, sending them back, it is criminal. And I don’t want to use euphemisms, I tell it like it is.”

The three human languages: head, heart and hands

After reviewing all these situations, the Pope reminded that the task of universities should not be only to “teach things.” “You must train boys and girls in the three human languages, that of the head, that of the heart and that of the hands.

“So that they learn to think what they feel and what they do, to feel what they do and what they think, and to do what they feel and what they think.” Finally, he thanked those present and summed up his words by calling on universities to be: “creative in the face of reality and challenges, educators and not just dispensers of information.”

Raja Khalaf – Cadence Bank – Vanguard Law Magazine

Cadence Bank has come a long way since it was founded in 1876 inside the Raymond Trice and Co. store in Verona, Mississippi.

For the past 12 years, Raja Khalaf, a senior vice president and assistant general counsel, has seen and helped guide the bank’s growth to operations in nine Southeastern states.

Cadence Bank’s growth has been fueled by M&A, most recently in Cadence Bancorporation’s 2021 merger with BancorpSouth Bank. The merged banks now operate as Cadence Bank and are the fifth largest bank in the region with total assets of about $48.8 billion.

Raja Khalaf | Senior Vice President and Assistant General Counsel | Cadence Bank

After the merger, Khalaf and a legal department colleague, Payne Atkinson, worked to combine the individual treasury management services agreements governing the two banks to accurately reflect the products, services and operational processes of the merged bank. The task needed to be completed in six weeks and the smallest details were crucial for customers of the merged bank. Soon after that, they revised the online banking agreement for the merged bank, too.

“The purpose in revising the treasury management services and online banking agreements was to align the goals of the banks that merged and align their operational practices,” Khalaf explains.

Getting aligned

Khalaf and Atkinson didn’t write the new online banking agreement and treasury management agreement on their own, of course. It was a six-week process of 15-hour days where collaborating with business and operations teams from the merged banks was essential.

The details were intricate—for instance, they needed to consider what new products would be offered, how all the products would work in the merged bank, and who in the bank should be contacted regarding errors such as treasury management services or online banking, Khalaf says.

He adds the treasury management services agreement sets forth almost the entire relationship between the bank and all of its clients who use treasury management services. The online banking terms and conditions governs the relationship between the bank and all commercial and consumer clients who use online banking services.

“The quality of my work is very important to me,” he says. “I need to maintain a delicate balance between protecting the safety and soundness of the bank, preserving the jobs of 6,000 people we employ and providing excellent service to our customers.”

Preparing podcasts

As a legal generalist, Khalaf focuses on transactional and regulatory matters. That includes vetting required consumer lending disclosures, addressing issues related to establishing and maintaining commercial and consumer deposit relationships, and reviewing documents and procedures for both secured and unsecured commercial and consumer lending.

The bank’s podcasts were the inspiration of Executive Vice President Patrick Pacheco and were first aired about a year before the Cadence – BancorpSouth merger. Now in their third season, podcast episodes over the years have included addressing supply chain challenges, dealing with cyberthreats, creating a brand and how to make a succession plan for a company.

Khalaf helps review the podcast content, including questions, responses and narrative for statements that might be interpreted as disparaging to a third party or that might be interpreted as infringing on a third party’s intellectual property rights.

“It gets the bank’s name out there and it’s a value add for existing and potential customers,” he says. “There’s some insightful information about issues facing growing businesses.”

Khalaf is also responsible for reviewing and negotiating Cadence Bank’s technology contracts and vendor agreements. While mindful of the cybersecurity threats the bank faces, he says he’s also making sure vendors with access to customer’s personal information and data don’t use it for their own purposes, such as selling it to other companies.

“We need to be sensitive about what we’re sharing with vendors,” he says. “We don’t want to violate our own privacy notice we send to customers.”

Experienced with details

Khalaf was born and grew up in Birmingham, Alabama. He anticipated a career in medicine—he was a pre-med student at Birmingham-Southern College—but felt having a legal degree would enable him to “stand up for the rights of the downtrodden,” he says.

After earning his bachelor’s degree in English at Birmingham-Southern in 1992, Khalaf enrolled at Samford University in 1993 to earn his J.D. He graduated in May 1996, and then served as a judicial law clerk for Judge Jack D. Carl of Alabama’s 11th Judicial Circuit until August 1998.

Khalaf then entered private practice as an associate with the Trimmer Law Firm in September 1998, where he advised credit unions in Alabama, Florida and Louisiana. While helping clients prepare lending documents and advertising, he also closed residential real estate purchases.

In September 2000, Khalaf joined the firm of Balch & Bingham where his work included reviewing credit card advertising copy and preparing consumer finance disclosures. He negotiated a $10 million purchase of office buildings for a utility company and also helped a municipality annex and rezone 1,400 acres of land from agricultural to industrial use.

In September 2011, Khalaf joined then-Superior Bank, N.A. which merged with Cadence Bank N.A. a year later. The merger signaled a decade of expansion into the Southeast, as well as Texas and Tennessee.

The growth he’s witnessed and contributed to hasn’t changed Khalaf’s approach to his role—details matter, he says.

“Gathering as much information as possible and taking all that detail, making sense of it and creating cohesive thoughts identifying issues out of it is what’s really important,” Khalaf says. “Sometimes the only way you’re going to be able to spot issues is by having a depth of experience. That’s something that you build up over decades.”

East Bay mayor, three council members will seek higher office

The makeup of city councils in Pittsburg and Antioch could see a shakeup with four members vying for other offices next year.

In Pittsburg, Mayor Shanelle Scales-Preston has announced her intent to run for Contra Costa County Supervisor Federal Glover’s District 5 seat if he steps down, while two-term Councilman Jelani Killings has also launched his campaign for the same seat.

Meanwhile, in Antioch, Councilman Mike Barbanica announced on Thursday his intent to seek the same supervisor’s seat, while colleague Monica Wilson this summer announced her bid for the District 15 Assembly seat currently held by Tim Grayson, D-Orinda.

Grayson, meanwhile, announced he was running for state senate in August. Glover, a county supervisor since 2000, has yet to make a decision, though he said he would soon.

The supervisor’s seat includes Pittsburg, Martinez, Hercules and Rodeo and portions of Antioch and Pinole as well the unincorporated communities of Alhambra Valley, Bay Point, Briones, Rodeo, Pacheco, Crockett, Tormey, Port Costa, Mt. View, Vine Hill, Reliez Valley and Clyde.

“I’m still processing whether I’m going to do it or not,” Glover, 67, said this week of his potential bid for another term.

Scales-Preston has been on the council since 2018, but also worked for local congressmen. A Pittsburg native, she said she hoped to do more on a county level as a supervisor.

“I’m running so I can do good in my community on a larger scale,” she said. “I’ve been working in the federal government for 22 years, and I’ve been able to help people at that level of government,” she said. “I feel like I can do a lot on a county level when it comes to services such as mental health services, transportation, youth services and public safety.”

Other priorities include “promoting economic growth, strengthening public safety and protecting our environment,” she said.

A Democrat, Scales-Preston said her strongest point is “being able to connect with people.”

“I enjoy being on the ground,” she said. “I enjoy collaborating with organizations, making sure people are being heard and working together to continue to push forward.”

Killings, meanwhile, is running on a platform centered around government accountability, public safety and economic development. An advocate for transparency and responsible governance, he aims to foster an environment of trust and cooperation between the county and its residents, he said.

Regarding public safety, Killings, who works as an ethics analyst, said that a safe community is the bedrock upon which all other progress is built. He is committed to working collaboratively with law enforcement agencies and community leaders to ensure a safer environment for all District 5 residents, he said.

Mayor Jelani Killings is running for another term on the Pittsburg City Council in November 2020.
Jelani Killings is running for Contra Costa supervisor in District 5  in 2024.

The seven-year councilman, who is not aligned with a political party, also said the district has an “immense potential” for economic growth.

“District 5 has the potential to be the economic and cultural backbone of Contra Costa County,” Killings said. “I envision a future where our community thrives, and its potential is fully realized. Together, we will build a brighter and more prosperous future for all.”

Barbanica, a Democrat, retired as a 21-year veteran of the Pittsburg Police Department in 2007. On the force, he ran a street level narcotic and crime unit for six years that was credited with reducing crime by 23% in Pittsburg.

He and his wife, Kristine, now own a small real estate business in which he says he works to help local families access affordable housing.

The Antioch District 2 councilman said he will continue to fight for Contra Costa families and wants “to ensure Contra Costa County is a place where every family has an equal opportunity to thrive.”

“I will use my experience as a long time police officer and now councilmember to tackle the housing crisis, ensure we get serious about public safety, and build a stronger community for all who call Contra Costa County home,” he said.

Wilson, meanwhile, is a four-term Antioch Councilwoman, having been the first Black woman elected to the city’s council in 2012.

While on the council, she has advocated for an end to human trafficking, pushed for police reform and sought to help those experiencing mental health crises, among other issues.

On a regional level, Wilson is past president and current member of the TriDelta Transit board, vice chair of the Northern California Democratic Party Women’s Caucus and former vice chair of the Democratic Party of Contra Costa County. She also was a past staff member of the Workforce Development Board of Contra Costa County, past staff adviser for FemDems and an outreach coordinator for the Grateful Garment Project.

“I am ready to take my results-oriented leadership to Sacramento, where I can do even more to maintain and improve the quality of life for our Contra Costa County communities and all Californians,” Wilson said in a statement. “Too many families are getting priced out due to skyrocketing cost of living and expensive housing. And creating effective solutions to homelessness is not only a regional but statewide crisis. I have a proven track record of tackling today’s tough problems to provide the leadership every Californian needs.”

Assembly District 15 includes Antioch, Brentwood, Clayton, Concord, Martinez, Pittsburg, Pleasant Hill, parts of Walnut Creek and unincorporated communities.

Frantic Assembly’s Metamorphosis Review

One of Kafka’s best-known works, Metamorphosis tells the story of salesman Gregor Samsa, who wakes one morning to find himself inexplicably transformed into a huge insect. Following his transformation, he is unable to work or reassimilate into normal life and thus he begins to contemplate his existence. Poet Lemn Sissay has teamed up with Frantic Assembly to bring the novella to the stage with the focus being on an economic system which forces people on to a conveyor belt of capitalism and discourages all forms of individuality and creativity.

Gregor Samsa is a salesman providing for his mother and sister and his unemployed, debt ridden, controlling father. The opening scene portrayed brilliantly the monotony of the daily grind as Samsa’s sole dialogue is a repetition of a line, and he repeats a pattern of movement coming through a door and up steps to represent his working day. This soon becomes exhausting, both for him and unfortunately for the viewer.

At times during the first half, I struggled to connect to the play, there appeared to be a battle between lyric and movement, an either or. Static or frenetic. I honestly wasn’t sure what was happening in parts. Having read Kafka, I had the context, but this was too fragmented and disjointed to decipher. The second half was more cohesive, but unfortunately some people didn’t return.

The set, designed by Jon Bauser was deceptively minimalistic. A box room, claustrophobic, perfectly portraying Samsa’s prison. Flash fashion magazines were projected on to the grungy white walls during the opening scenes. The ceiling light had a role of its own, swing, pivot, flashlight. A bed which swallowed, masked and tilted. The sinister slow move of the room made for a very disconcerting feel indeed. My only criticism would be that the audience on the peripheral seats would miss what was happening within the room as its quite boxed in.

Simisola Majekodunmi made magic with shadow work, casting images of insects on the wall, in lieu of a full insect costume and utilising harsh lights to disorientate and blind. Sudden blackouts also added to Samsa’s ability to scuttle and leap in the blink of an eye across his room. Again my only criticism would be that the audience on the peripheral seats would miss some of the insect shadow work as it could only be seen if you had front facing seats.

Felipe Pacheco as George Samsa was spectacular. He showed incredible physical strength and athletic flexibility and demonstrated Samsa’s metamorphosis as magnificently as the production enabled him to. There is a wonderful scene where he is caught up in several chairs, insect like, very clever work indeed. Louise May Newberry and Troy Glasgow were fabulous as the parents and Joe Layton played his multiple roles with gusto. Hannah Sinclair Robinson was arresting as Greta and brought some great tension to the stage, especially when there was a slight sinister incestuous moment.

The production is lyrically beautiful and when there is movement its mesmerising, but unfortunately, Metamorphosis misses the mark. It lacks direction and progressive tension and ultimately, you’re left feeling this is a rather lengthy adaptation which has only focused on some of Kafka’s genius ideas.
