VILLAINY?

As Russia prepares to invade Ukraine (or maybe is already doing so), I wanted to share this message and request from Rabbi Avraham Wolf, Chief Rabbi of Odessa & Southern Ukraine. It’s from a few days ago and I’m not sure if there have been any updates but it just feels really important to signal boost this:

“The Jewish community in the Ukraine is in need of your assistance during these dire times. As the threat of war intensifies, Mishpacha Chabad Odessa is preparing to support the hundreds of Jews who are unable to evacuate the country including orphans, students, and Holocaust survivors. Preparations are also underway to absorb Jewish refugees from the surrounding regions of Kharkiv, Kiev, and Dnieper.

$300,000 in donations are urgently needed to purchase medical gear, protective equipment, and basic necessities such as clothes and sleeping bags. Money is also needed to help stock emergency shelters with several tons of cereal, buckwheat, sugar, rice, flour and other non-perishable staples. These donations will also help defray the costs of additional security personnel arriving from Israel to help protect the Jewish community.

Your generous donation will help ensure that the Jewish community of Odessa is prepared for all eventualities and is able to provide security, shelter, and food for everyone in need during this dangerous time. $130,000 has already been spent in food alone – but much more is still needed.”

People are Going Crosseyed for this New Birdwatching Technique Using Cheap Glasses, a Paper Plate, and Birdseed

When you think of birdwatchers you think of someone using some top quality binoculars. These watchers are usually trying to catch a glimpse of some rare bird sitting on the top of some tree or taking flight in the sky. The sport can get really intense and attracts hundreds of thousands of people. But TikTok bird-lovers are starting to redefine the sport with her DIY bird feeder glasses.

It’s nothing fancy, anybody could make them. The glasses are usually some cheap plastic looking glasses that has a paper plate taped to them that is filled with birdseed. The hardest part is having the patience. TikToker Drin aka @birdladydrin has gone viral for simply sitting out in the snow wrapped in a blanket for hours just for a few birds to perch only for a few seconds in front of her eyes.

A Couple of Birds Landing:

This woman posts video of her doing this all the time and sometimes even has her husband join her. Every single video seems to go viral, but she really only gets a quick glimpse of just a few birds each time. Though her huge excited smile every time a bird does come to visit her, really warms any viewer’s heart.

Married Life:

However, she wasn’t the inventor of this contraption—she got the idea from another birdwatcher on TikTok, James Manzo aka @hum.daddy. However, Manzo has since changed his concentration on attracting humming birds now. His hummingbird-feeder-to-face take on an entirely new level the longer he goes viral.

Inventor:

Humming Bird Feeder Beard:

Humming Bird Feeder Face Mask:

The new technique is really making birdwatching available to just about anybody. Instead of having to spend a lot of money on high quality tools like binoculars and hiking boots, etc., you can now build your own bird feeder glasses or helmet and simply sit in your backyard and wait.

Paint it black: behind the James Webb Space Telescope’s signature color

NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope has to stay super cool to observe the cosmos. How does it beat the heat? Black paint.

As the agency explained in its new YouTube series “Elements of Webb,” the James Webb Space Telescope‘s radiator is painted black to absorb heat. Just like how black asphalt gets hot in the summertime, objects that are black are generally hotter as they absorb all wavelengths of light and convert it into heat. (Comparatively, white objects reflect light and do not absorb heat.)

Webb engineers use this principle to keep the telescope cool.

Live updates: NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope mission

Webb essentially has two sides, a hot side and a cool side, which are separated by the spacecraft’s sunshield. The cool side is where its highly sensitive scientific instruments reside, and sunshield blocks any heat from the sun from reaching those instruments.

The cool side “even has a radiator to keep it extra cool,” NASA multimedia specialist Sophia Roberts said in the video. That radiator and everything except Webb’s bright gold mirrors are black on that side, she explained.

Now, this black paint is important not only because black objects absorb heat well, but also because they emit heat well, Roberts noted, adding that objects painted black are highly emissive (a measurement of how well something radiates heat).

To ensure that the black paint used on Webb did the best job possible at soaking up and radiating heat away from the telescope’s instruments, NASA used a special ultra-black paint made by Ball Aerospace called Ball Infrared Black (BIRB).

Webb’s cold side is about minus 388 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 233 degrees Celsius). So, why do Webb’s instruments need to be so cold?

Webb observes primarily infrared light, which we humans perceive as heat. If the telescope is too warm, that heat could interfere with observations. Since the scope’s instruments naturally create heat as they work, Roberts noted, Webb has to be proactive about cooling off.

This is why, in addition to shielding the instruments from solar rays with the sunshield, Webb also has a radiator — painted with BIRB — that helps to keep things as chilly as possible.

Webb arrived at its final home in space on Jan. 24 after a month of traveling nearly 1 million miles (1.5 million kilometers) through space. By observing in infrared from this distant vantage point, scientists hope that Webb will be able to peer back at some of the earliest moments in the universe’s history, detecting the heat from the earliest stars and galaxies to ever exist.

Holidays schedule and stuff

Hello! I won’t be available from the 31st of Dec to the 4th of Jan (my b-day!) and might visit my relatives from the 5th to the 9th of Jan but it depends on a lot of things so I can’t tell if it’s going to happen yet. (Holidays in Russia are from the 31st of Dec until the 9th of Jan)

Prices will be raised in 2022 but there’s still 1 slot for January for current prices, you can pay until the end of December but I’ll start your comm in January.

I’ll probably start thinking of launching Patreon so I need your input too:) Content I’ve thought of:

– I don’t want to paywall any finished content and promise it won’t happen
– moving all WIPs there and making them into more detailed step by steps
– timelapse videos
– exclusive adopts
– early access OCs content (including writing)
– commission queue priority for patrons
– art tips for higher tiers (you can ask for advice on your own art)
– making a discord server maybe but I feel like I don’t know anything about it lmao

Happy upcoming holidays! (ෆ˙ᵕ˙ෆ) ・゚: *・゚:*
