Smith, a right-handed ace from the University of Alabama, agreed to a $1,115,000 bonus, according to MLB.com’s Jim Callis. That’s well above the slot value of $844,200 assigned to the 74th overall pick. Since the Tigers had also gone above slot value to sign Competitive Balance pick Ty Madden and second-rounder Izaac Pacheco, Detroit actually had just $403,700 remaining from its Draft pool allotment.
Teams can go above that allotment, but pay different penalties depending on how far they exceed it. Teams that outspend their allotment by five percent or less pay a 75 percent tax on the overage. If a team goes beyond five percent over, the penalty includes forfeiture of a future first-round pick. Half of the MLB teams exceeded their pools last year, but no team has gone more than five percent since the spending pool rules went into effect nine years ago.
Smith’s rise with the Crimson Tide in his junior season earned him comparisons as the school’s best pitching prospect since Spencer Turnbull, whom the Tigers drafted in the second round in 2014. His advanced grasp of his slider and curveball and his work with spin rates caught Detroit’s attention. He was also fairly young for a college junior, having just turned 21 at the end of May.
Add in the back half of the Draft, and the Tigers have signed 16 of their 21 picks. Central Florida catcher Josh Crouch, their 11th-round selection, is their highest-drafted pick yet to sign. All five are college players, though 20th-rounder J.D. McLaughlin was a junior college player at Central Arizona College.
Robbie Grossman is the lone veteran left in the Tigers’ outfield, but even he needs a day off now and then to clear his head. That came Monday, giving him a chance to catch his breath and take a different view of the game amidst an 8-for-35 stretch since the All-Star break. Three of those hits went for home runs, but he also has 10 strikeouts, half of them coming in a 1-for-11 series in Kansas City over the weekend.
His stats and metrics are a line of contrasts. Despite one of the best walk rates and lowest chase rates in the game, he isn’t doing as much as he can with pitches he hits. His 35.2 percent hard-hit rate is down from last year’s abbreviated season, according to Statcast, as is his 88.4 mph average exit velocity.
Sixty-four percent of the balls he’s put in play are line drives or fly balls — the highest in the Majors among players with at least 150 batted balls. But that entire increase comes on fly balls — his 36.8 percent rate is by far the highest of his career. His line-drive rate is actually down from last year. His average launch angle has jumped from 15.2 percent in 2020 to 20 percent this season.
More than 30 firefighters are at the scene of a large fire in Hawke’s Bay tonight, understood to be at Bostock New Zealand fruit and vegetable processing site in Flaxmere.
Firefighters received multiple 111 calls about 9.20pm, with witnesses quickly sharing footage and photos online.
No one has been injured but the initial response crew of three fire appliances was increased to eight – with a total of 32 firefighters on scene – soon after, Fire and Emergency’s central communications shift manager Mike Wanoa said.
The fire in an equipment workshop was “fully-involved” when firefighters arrived.
Janet Vaiusu-Tuala is at Te Aranga Marae about 100 metres away and saw the drama unfolding.
“I’m with the Hawke’s Bay Family Law Section lawyers at Te Aranga Marae for our Noho Marae and we saw smoke, and then flames and crackling.
“We were told it was at Bostock and the it was pallets that were on fire. We’ve gone inside now to await whether we have to be evacuated but it seems under control now.”
The fire was brought under control about 10pm, Wanoa said.
Crews from Napier and Hastings, along with volunteer firefighters from Havelock North, attended.
According to their website, Bostock New Zealand grows and exports organic apples, onions, squash, kiwifruit and grain.
Quick Read
Their organic apples are exported to more than 20 different countries throughout Europe, the Middle East, Asia and North America, according to the website.
Owner John Bostock and his wife Vicki started as conventional apple and squash growers in the 1980s but later switched to organic after becoming “concerned with the industry’s liberal use of pesticides and other artificial substances”.
Emergency parking ban effective at 10 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 6
City offices, libraries, Buttonwood Park Zoo closed Friday, Jan. 7
COVID-19 Testing Canceled at Fire Station 11 on Friday, Jan. 7
The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for southeastern Massachusetts, including New Bedford, in effect from 1 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 7. The National Weather Service predicts total snow accumulations of 6 to 8 inches, with localized accumulations of up to 10 inches possible. Storm conditions are expected to make travel very difficult, particularly during the Friday morning commute.
Citywide Snow Emergency Parking Ban Effective at 10 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 6
In preparation for the approaching snowstorm, the City of New Bedford has announced a citywide snow emergency parking ban to take effect at 10 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 6.
The parking ban will be strictly enforced and will remain in effect for 48 hours, unless lifted or further extended by City officials. The parking ban is designed to allow City workers to efficiently remove snow from New Bedford roadways, and enable public safety vehicles and residents to travel safely.
While the snow emergency parking ban is in effect, parking is permitted on the north side of all streets going east and west, and is permitted on the east side of all streets going north and south. The permitted side of the street is typically the side opposite of the fire hydrants.
Please note that on streets that are normally posted for parking on one side of the street only, residents are to obey the signs as usual. Vehicles should never be parked within ten (10) feet of a fire hydrant or twenty (20) feet from a corner as required by law, regardless of whether a snow ban is in effect.
Double-sided Parking Ban Areas
To increase public safety during storm events, the areas designated for a double-sided parking ban include sections of numerous streets (listed below), in addition to the Downtown and Acushnet Avenue Business Districts, where double-sided bans have been implemented in years past. The street sections were selected because they are major routes for ambulances, school buses, and SRTA buses, and have a history of large vehicles being unable to successfully navigate due to the narrowness of the street.
During a snow emergency parking ban, therefore, no parking is permitted on either side of the street in the following areas:
• Wood St (Acushnet Ave to Belleville Ave)
• Acushnet Ave (Tarkiln Hill Rd to Coggeshall St)
• Nash Rd (Acushnet Ave to Belleville Ave)
• Ashley Blvd (Nash Rd to Coggeshall St)
• County St (Purchase St to Cove Rd)
• Cottage St (Durfee St to Union St)
• Mill St (Kempton St to Pleasant St)
• Kempton St (Brownell Ave to Pleasant St)
• The Downtown Business District (County St to JFK Blvd, Kempton St to Walnut St)
• Dartmouth St (Allen St to Matthew St)
• Rivet St (Dartmouth St to JFK Blvd)
Violations of the snow emergency parking ban will be subject to ticketing at $50 per ticket, and towing at full cost to the owner of the vehicle towed. The vehicle owner is also responsible for the full cost of storage for any towed vehicle.
The City of New Bedford has designated the following areas as preferred parking areas for residents in need of off-street parking while the emergency snow parking ban is in effect:

Barack Obama expressed confidence at UN climate talks that the Biden administration will ultimately get its $555 billion ($774b) climate package through Congress, and faulted U.S. rivals China and Russia for what he called a “dangerous lack of urgency” in cutting their own climate-wrecking emissions.
As nations complained of lagging trust and progress in the climate talks, the former US president, one of the leaders who paved the way for the historic 2015 Paris climate deal, threw in a touch of his trademark hope even while talking about “images of dystopia” that were creeping into his dreams.
“There are times where the future seems somewhat bleak. There are times where I am doubtful that humanity can get its act together before it’s too late,” Obama said at the two-week-long negotiations. “We can’t afford hopelessness.”
His comments came as conference leaders acknowledged Monday that many key sticking points exist after a week of talks. A trust gap between rich and poor nations on climate change issues emerged when the negotiations went through a checklist of what’s left to be done. Developing countries used the word “disappointing” several times when leaders talked Monday about the progress to date.
The U.N. climate conference in Glasgow, Scotland, is Obama’s first since he helped deliver the triumph of the 2015 Paris climate accord, when nations committed to cutting fossil fuel and agricultural emissions fast enough to keep the Earth’s warming below catastrophic levels of 1.5C.
That celebration has been replaced by worry. Donald Trump pulled the U.S. out of the Paris accord. President Joe Biden put America back in the climate deal as soon as he took office this year but the Trump move set back U.S. efforts for years. Other top polluters — including China, India and Russia — are moving far more slowly on fighting climate change than scientists say is needed.
“1.5C is on life support now, it’s in ICU,” said Alden Meyer, a long-time observer of climate talks with E3G, an environmental think tank.
Obama’s appearance sought to remind governments of the elation that surrounded the Paris accord and urge them to announce more immediate, concrete steps to put the 2015 deal into action. Optimism and unity is required to save the planet, both in the U.S. and around the world, he said.
“It doesn’t matter if you’re a Republican or a Democrat, if your Florida house is flooded by rising seas, or your crops fail in the Dakotas, or your California house is burning. Nature, physics, science – they don’t care about party affiliation,” Obama said. “We need everybody – even if we disagree on other things.”
Despite opposition within Biden’s own Democratic party that has blocked the President’s climate-fighting legislation, Obama said he was confident that some version of Biden’s ambitious climate bill will pass in Congress.

And while rapport between U.S. negotiators and their Chinese counterparts was seen as paving the way to the global Paris accord in 2015, Obama on Monday criticized Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin for not joining other global leaders at the climate talks in Glasgow.

“It was particularly discouraging to see the leaders of two of the world’s largest emitters, China and Russia, decline to even attend the proceedings, and their national plans reflect what appears to be a dangerous lack of urgency,” Obama said.
Obama spoke earlier Monday to a session on Pacific Island nations, including ones whose existence is threatened by rising oceans due to climate change.
“All of us have a part to play. All of us have work to do. All of us have sacrifices to make”, on climate, he said. “But those of us who live in wealthy nations, those of us who helped to precipitate the problem … we have an added burden.”
No deals have been made yet on three main goals of the U.N. conference. Those are pledges to cut emissions in half by 2030 to keep the Paris climate deal’s 1.5C temperature limit goal alive; the need for $100 billion annually in financial help from rich countries to poor ones; and the idea that half of that money goes to adapting to global warming’s worst effects. Several other issues, including trading carbon and the transparency of national emissions commitments, also weren’t solved yet.
Representatives of 77 developing nations, along with China, said until this climate conference produces the financing to help poor nations cope with climate change the talks can’t be considered successful. They said announcements on fighting climate change were high in number but worried that they were low in quality.
Ahmadou Sebory Touré of Guinea said rich countries not fulfilling their $100 billion a year pledge to aid poor nations shows they are just making “an empty commitment”.
“There is a history of broken promises and unfulfilled commitments by developed countries,” added Diego Pacheco Balanza of Bolivia.
Scientists say the Earth is only a few years away from the point where meeting the goals set in the Paris accord becomes impossible, due to mounting damage from coal, petroleum, agriculture and other pollution sources. The last few days have seen huge protests in Glasgow and around Europe by young people and others demanding faster action in fighting global warming.
Obama met later Monday with a dozen climate activists, many in their 20s, urging them to keep up their public pressure despite frustrations at the lack of more efforts by governments.
“The question is, where are the countries that really met our expectations? And it turns out, those are the places where there was pressure, where there was political mobilisation, where there were activists,” a shirtsleeves-clad Obama said.
