Detective Benedetti to be buried in Paso Robles, following funeral in SLO

Local leaders offer condolences for officer killed in line of duty

Local leaders offer condolences for officer killed in line of dutyMotorists advised to avoid the area, take alternate routes during the procession

–Thousands of mourners are expected to gather at the Cal Poly Performing Arts Center and along the first-responder procession route Thursday morning in memory of slain San Luis Obispo Police Det. Luca Benedetti.

The memorial service will begin at 10 a.m. and last approximately two hours. Then a motorcade of first responders will leave the Performing Arts Center immediately following the service. Those who cannot attend in person may view live-streamed videos of both online:

• Funeral service video: https://livestream.com/accounts/8522144/events/9677069
• Processional video: https://livestream.com/accounts/8522144/events/9676633

Those attending the service are recommended to arrive early and carpool if possible as parking is limited. The Performing Arts Center parking garage lower levels will be used with overflow parking available at Lot G2 at the corner of Slack Street and Longview Lane. Parking garage access will be routed from Slack Street to Pacheco Way.

The procession will depart from the Performing Arts Center on Grand Avenue to Monterey Street, then will turn left on Monterey to Highway 101 North. The procession will remain on Highway 101 North to the Paso Robles Cemetery.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area and take alternate routes during the procession. The public is invited to view the procession from legal and safe locations, or online. First responders from neighboring agencies will help patrol the city while Det. Benedetti’s colleagues attend the memorial services.

Through Friday, May 21, City officials encourage community members to show their support for Det. Benedetti’s family, co-workers, and the many others affected by last Monday’s tragic events by visiting outdoor memorial sites established at San Luis Obispo Police Department at 1042 Walnut Street, Fire Station #1 at 2160 Santa Barbara Ave, and on the lawn of San Luis Obispo City Hall at 990 Palm St. Community members are encouraged to visit the sites and plant an American flag in the grass in remembrance or simply observe a moment of silence. Cards and other messages left at the memorial sites will be delivered to Det. Benedetti’s family.

Earlier this week, the San Luis Obispo Police Department Police Officer Association and the San Luis Obispo Regional SWAT team set up a GoFundMe page for the sole purpose of providing financial assistance to the Benedetti family going forward in their time of need. As of Wednesday morning, it had already raised more than $560,000.

Benedetti, a 12-year veteran of law enforcement, was shot and killed while serving a search warrant at a residence in San Luis Obispo on Monday, May 10, 2021. He was 37 and left behind a wife and two young daughters.

A GoFundMe page has also been created for Det. Steve Orozco, who was injured in the shooting.

No clear presidential frontrunner as Costa Ricans cast votes – ABC News

A large proportion of the electorate remained undecided in the final days before the vote in the Central American nation.

If no candidate captures at least 40% of the vote, a runoff vote will be held April 3 between the top two candidates. No single candidate was even close to that threshold in recent polls.

Costa Ricans are frustrated by high unemployment, recent public corruption scandals and another surge of COVID-19 infections, but have not swarmed to a candidate.

Voting centers were busy Sunday morning as some Costa Ricans tried to beat the typical late day crowds.

Each person had to wash their hands, wear a mask and maintain distance inside the polling places,

“I hoped for fewer people in the morning, because you want to avoid the lines, but from what I’ve seen a lot of people thought the same and came to vote early,” said 68-year-old retiree Carlos Rodríguez in the capital.

He didn’t share his choice for president, but said he expected voting to go to a second round. He said he hoped there would be some surprises among candidates who hadn’t polled particularly well.

“We’re going to have to come to vote again in April, I’m sure of that,” he said. “The thing is who gets to that round.”

The Supreme Elections Tribunal reported good turnout across the country.

José María Figueres is the candidate for the National Liberation Party founded by his father José Figueres Ferrer, who himself served as the country’s president on three occasions in the 1940s, 50s and 70s.

The younger Figueres was Costa Rica’s president from 1994 to 1998, but has been questioned over a $900,000 consulting fee he received after his presidency from the telecommunication company Alcatel while it competed for a contract with the national electricity company. He was never charged with any crime and denied any wrongdoing.

Also among the contenders is another experienced politician, Lineth Saborío for Christian Social Unity. Saborío served as Costa Rica’s vice president during the administration of Abel Pacheco from 2002 to 2006.

Previously, Saborío led Costa Rica’s Judicial Investigation Department, which oversees criminal investigations.

In addition to voter apathy, turnout remains uncertain because new COVID-19 infections are running around 6,000 a day. An election official had encouraged those infected to abstain from voting, but others have acknowledged there’s no way to keep people from exercising their constitutional right.

Polls are scheduled to close at 6 p.m. Sunday. Costa Ricans living abroad cast ballots Saturday in the country’s consulates.

After Almost Two Years, L.A.’s Underground Museum Reopens With New Leadership and an Emotional Tribute to Its Late Founder

The Underground Museum in Los Angeles has finally reopened for the first time since February of 2020—a significant milestone to be sure, and not just because of how much time has passed. The moment also marks a fresh chapter for the young artist-founded space, one that comes with a new leadership team, a special show, and an important anniversary on the horizon.

That significance hasn’t been lost on locals. Tickets to see the venue’s new exhibition—a survey of work by the late painter Noah Davis, who co-founded the Underground Museum a decade ago and died from a rare cancer just three years later—are booked well into February, said Meg Onli, the Underground’s curator and co-director. She, along with fellow director and chief operations officer Cristina Pacheco, make up the new team leading the institution, which reopened on Friday.

“I have never been in a museum that I feel is loved like this,” said Onli, an L.A. native, in a phone interview last month.

The anticipation of the reopening speaks to just how far the museum has come since its humble beginnings in 2012, when it debuted in a series of contiguous storefronts in the city’s Arlington Heights neighborhood, which doubled as a home and studio for Davis and his wife, fellow Underground Museum co-founder Karon Davis. Today, the museum on Washington Boulevard is one of the country’s brightest alternative art hubs—not to mention a successful model for other upstart spaces.

Despite being closed to the public for almost two years, the Underground didn’t let a single employee go during that time; all staff members, including docents, received full pay throughout the pandemic. That’s a distinction few other museums can claim. According to a 2021 report, for instance, 228 of the country’s largest arts institutions collectively reduced their workforce by 28 percent during lockdown.

One reason for this is the museum’s core values, Onli explained. “It’s a space that has a connection to a passing—to Noah’s passing. I think there’s a lot of sensitivity around illness and death and care.”

But it is also a question of funding—an area where the institution is, for now at least, on fine footing. The museum’s budget comes from a combination of board support, foundation grants, and individual donations (given anonymously, per the institution’s policy). The museum does not have an endowment; all the funding raised goes directly towards operations.

It’s a mixture most nonprofits rely on, but not many can do so as comfortably as the Underground Museum has over the past couple of years, riding a wave of support that mirrors the meteoric rise of Davis’s market. Since 2020, when curator Helen Molesworth mounted a much talked-about exhibition of Davis’s work at David Zwirner in New York, seven of the artist’s paintings have exceeded $100,000 at auction, according to the Artnet Price Database.

The exhibition now on view at the Underground Museum is a version of the one Molesworth debuted in New York. There are a few additions and subtractions to the checklist of paintings, and artist Justen Leroy—who worked with Davis—joined Molesworth in the curation this time around. But the main difference is more emotional than logistical: this, somewhat surprisingly, is the first exhibition of Davis’s work at the venue he helped create.

“In many ways, this is a homecoming—a homecoming, literally, to where Davis had lived,” said Onli. “You definitely feel it. It’s emotional in the space.”

There’s a tinge of irony, too. The director and curator said that the paintings in the show arrived in carefully crafted, insured crates—a polished institutional packaging that embodies the increased respect the art world now places upon both Davis’s work and the Underground Museum.

“[When] Noah and Karon co-founded the Underground Museum, their goal was to bring museum-quality art to this community in Arlington Heights,” Onli said, recalling the first show in the space, in which Davis recreated artworks in the style of Dan Flavin, Jeff Koons, and other canonized figures. “All of those pieces were fabricated because he couldn’t get museum loans. Now we have loans from MoMA and many collectors.”

“NOAH DAVIS” is on view at the Underground Museum now through September 30, 2022.

Daily Report – Bitcoin and Market Update (February 2 2022) – The Birb Nest

HTF 12H:

The middaily chart shows a slow-pacing upwards trend ever since bitcoin bounced off 33000 USD lows. An upwards trend is defined as a sequence of higher highs and higher lows in the price chart. What does the low momentum mean in practice for bitcoin? Let’s break it down.

First off, the presence of numerous upper candle shadows reveals the supply side of the market and areas defined by the sellers and where the buyers failed. Notice that most of the candle closes over 38000 USD level have been equipped with either small candle bodies or significant upper wicks. This is what lack of momentum means shown in the price chart. It means that the buyers struggle over the short-term time frames. Despite the chart technically keeps making higher highs and higher lows, one can tell it’s not full of strength as it barely makes it, to put it this way.

BWAP support is given at 35.8-36.5k USD region and as long as bitcoin prints 12h candle closes above this zone, the technical upwards trend is relatively “safe”.

BPRO Momentum Bands define the actual volatility of bitcoin for the days ahead to be mainly concentrated between 35.8k USD and 40.5k USD levels.

CTF Trailer Stop is set at 40365 USD as the most critical level for this soon-to-be a 3 month correction. A proper break above this level with a follow through (new higher daily close) should officially be enough to reverse the market to the upside.

MTF 4H:

MTF chart shows a local intraday volatility breakout to the downside.

The main CTF Trailer Stop level 37255 USD is the main defense level that bulls need to hold. Otherwise, if a bearish close below, BTCUSD may be aiming the Low Momentum Band zone at the 35.8-36.5k USD area.

Level Line support is given at 36208 USD and it provides confluence for the said band support area. It means then, that if BTCUSD closes a 4H candle below the CTF Trailer Stop level, the next target to the downside seems to be $36208 abouts.

The High Momentum Band implies volatility-based supply zone where the sellers may aggregate their ask orders, accounting the average volatility of bitcoin.

The resistances are given higher above by the BPRO at [USD]: 38678, 41376 – for the most relevant figures now.

LTF 1H:

The hourly chart shows a local rejection at the top area off of a supply zone given by the price action around 39000 USD level.

BPRO analysis of bitcoin’s price action suggests that the main support area for now is defined at the key pivotal level (the orange thicker line) at 36900 USD. As long as this one holds, BTCUSD could be expected to continue trading inside the range bound movement between 36900 USD lows and 38700 USD resistance – unless a proper break beneath the said support occurs.

The resistances defined by the price action of bitcoin are given as follows:

39300
38800
38260

BPRO Level Lines show supports at:

36900
36200
35500

These levels could be anticipated to serve as level-to-level references. In other words, when one level is breached, the next one in the direction of the movement can be expected to act as the next “magnet”

FEAR/GREED INDEX

The fear saga continues with yet another day.

At 28 points on the scale, it adds another day to already 2.5month-long lasting correction.

As mentioned on Monday, I still maintain the point that bitcoin is in a wide re-accumulation range, soon to be followed be an upwards impulse – regardless if there is one more dip ahead or not.

Remember that the majority is usually right in the middle of trends and usually wrong about the extremes. At times one needs to wait longer than preferred for a bitcoin bottom to form, but the history suggests every time bitcoin was this oversold, it was followed by a proper bounce and profitability soon after.

It’s not a timing indicator, though. Do not expect it to give a perfect timing for bottom or top in the market. Instead, it may be source of valuable insights to decide when the market is to be considered “cheap” or “expensive”.
