Boston Cop Helps Woman Struggling to Park Near Fenway

Do you ever have one of those days where you just cannot park your car to save your life? This poor woman was struggle bussing trying to find a parking spot for nearly an hour at Fenway Park this weekend. Fortunately, someone was looking out for her.

Abbey Pacheco of Dartmouth was heading to Fenway Park for the New Kids on the Block concert on Friday, August 6.

“We pulled up to park and this lady had been looking and circling around the block for like an hour,” Pacheco said. “There was a police officer there and he asked us if we could push back a little for her and we did. She did try a few times to get her car in the post, but it just wasn’t working out. At one point he had to get between our car hood and the back of her car. He was trying to tell her to stop before she slammed into us. It was just a mess.”

Pacheco offered to help the woman park her car to avoid any damage to either vehicle, but the police officer was already on it.

“He kindly helped her park her car, taking the keys from her with no hesitation and didn’t want to make her feel embarrassed,” Pacheco said.

Pacheco recorded the incident to show the cop’s kind gesture.

“As a wife to a state trooper it kills me that they don’t all get good recognition,” Pacheco said. “This deserves some shares and likes. I regret not catching his name, but I hope we can find him and show him some love.”

Baldanza Moves to Wilton & Takes Over The Schoolhouse — CT Bites

School is officially back in session in the Cannondale neighborhood of
Wilton. We’re not talking education but rather The Schoolhouse’s new
“teachers,” Angela and Sandy Baldanza and their son, Alex.

Before the family’s move to the historic Cannondale School, they were
restaurantless. No, you aren’t crazy to imagine that they had a few
restaurants at one point. They owned and operated Baldanza Cafe for 8 ½
years in New Canaan with six of those spent where SE The Back End is now.
They even ran Baldanza Bistro in Darien behind Ten Twenty Post.

“When COVID hit, we closed that space (Darien) because it was too small for
outdoor seating,” Angela says. “We took a lease at 21 Forest (in New
Canaan). A few months in, we received complaints from the condo board
there. We cut our losses there and our Darien lease ended. And we only left
17 Elm because of the place in Darien, so we were left with no restaurants
at all.”

Cue the 1872 building we’ve all known as The Schoolhouse at Cannondale
under Tim LaBant and most recently the home of Hugh Mangum’s popular Rise
Doughnut pop-up who subleased from LaBant for a year. LaBant, who had a
14-year run at The Schoolhouse decided not to renew for a few reasons. “I
left to focus on Parlor Wilton and the new Parlor Darien,” he says. “My
lease was up and in these crazy times, I decided not to renew.”

All of the moving, and the closings, led to a coincidence.

“Ironically, Tim has our old spot in Darien where he opened Parlor and we
took over The Schoolhouse on July 1,” Angela says. “Here we are, and we
love being here. Sandy and I used to come here for dinner when we had a
break from our restaurant. We love Tim.”

At this iteration of Baldanza, diners can anticipate a local, organic, and
homemade approach. Brioche and Tuscan bread are sourced from Balthazar
Bakery, while the naturally leavened, freshly milled sourdough comes from
123Dough Bakery in Pound Ridge. They also get seasonal produce from
Connecticut farms, citing Wilton’s own Ambler Farm as a primary supplier
and seafood is by way of New Wave Seafood in Stamford.

The approach to “local and fresh” applies in the kitchen where Baldanza’s
longtime chef, Rodrigo Pacheco executes a menu mostly curated by Angela and
Sandy. Pasta, as you’ll see in a hearty pappardelle Bolognese, is made
in-house, as is the fluffy ricotta gnocchi tossed in roasted tomato vodka
sauce, the cheese ravioli, and the tagliatelle caprese with buffala
mozzarella and cherry tomato sauce.

SOCKERS GO ON RUN, DROP FURY 6-3 SUNDAY EVENING

SAN DIEGO, CA – Trailing 3-0 to the rival Ontario Fury five minutes into the third quarter, the San Diego Sockers were down, but not out.

The Sockers—presented by Kaiser Permanente San Diego—rolled off six unanswered goals in the second half, coming from behind to beat the Fury 6-3 Sunday night at Pechanga Arena San Diego. Tavoy Morgan netted twice for the Sockers, and Juan Carlos “Charlie” Gonzalez had the go-ahead goal in the fourth quarter, as well as the assist to Brandon Escoto that clinched things. Club captain Kraig Chiles led the team in points on the night, gathering a goal and two assists.

The offensive burst was significant, but it’s what happened on the other end of the field that deserves further mention. Flying into San Diego from Texas to meet his teammates in the locker room before the match on a ten-day contract, goalkeeper Eduardo “Pollo” Cortes stopped 12 of 15 chances, earning a win in place of Boris Pardo, who missed the match due to health and safety protocols.

“I know a few of these guys (from tournaments), but even if I don’t know them, my mindset is to come in and get the win,” said Cortes, “This is the second time I’ve been to San Diego in my life, and it’s been good to me so far.”

Behind five blocked shots from defender Guerrero Pino and two more (including a point-blank save off the line) from Mitchell Cardenas, the Sockers shut out four-time MASL MVP Franck Tayou, who had netted nine goals in his first three matches. Tayou remains three points away from 400 in his MASL career.

“We got good matchups with Pino and Mitchell (against Tayou), they were battling,” said head coach Phil Salvagio. With a wink and a smile, he added, “They love each other!”

A highly physical match saw the Fury (2-2) commit 20 fouls, including a pair of fourth-quarter blue cards, to San Diego’s ten fouls committed. Both teams bunkered in for a defensive affair with low-pressure approaches, and the match was scoreless after fifteen minutes.

“We knew it was gonna be physical,” said Salvagio, “When you have so many emotions, two great teams playing each other, you’re going to get that. Emotions run high and low in the indoor game.”

Ontario began the second quarter with 22 seconds of power-play time, earned on a slide tackle blue card from the Sockers’ Christian Gutierrez. The Fury needed just 16 of those seconds to open the scoring, as Jesus Pacheco ripped a half-volley into the upper-left corner of the net, shooting from a tight angle deep in the right corner. The lone goal and 1-0 lead held up to halftime, with San Diego being out-shot 12-10.

The Fury pushed their lead out to 3-0 with a pair of quick third-quarter goals. First, Justin Stinson took advantage of a turnover deep in the Sockers defensive zone, using a silky move to free himself from Brandon Escoto before beating Cortes to the far post for his fourth goal of the season, and a 2-0 lead at 3:54. Moments later, sustained possession by Ontario led to a ball pushed out to defender Juan Topete, who launched from behind the red line. The ball glanced off Cortes’ mitt and into the right-side netting at 5:14 to make it 3-0 Fury.

The San Diego comeback began with some fantastic footwork from Leonardo de Oliveira. Last year’s Finals MVP, “Leo” broke down defender Uzi Tayou with a series of four fakes, freeing a left-footed shot that beat Toth inside the far post for his third goal of the season, clawing back a goal for the Sockers quickly at 6:07.

Two minutes later, San Diego turned up the defensive pressure, pressing the Fury high in their defensive zone. Cardenas tapped the ball loose to Morgan, who was in free on Toth, curving a right-footed shot around him at 8:23 to make it a 3-2 score. Morgan celebrated his first home Sockers goal with a dance alongside de Oliveira.

The match was drawn even in the final minute of the third quarter, when Felipe Gonzalez crashed in from his defender position along the left wall, spotting Kraig Chiles alone at the right elbow of the crease. The pass found Chiles in time for a near-post goal, sneaking the ball past Toth at 14:00 exactly to knot the score at 3-3.

The fourth quarter began with another chance off of a turnover, as Morgan found himself alone in on goal against Toth, dragged down by Uzi Tayou with a bearhug from behind. The Sockers were awarded a shootout. Brandon Escoto was the pre-match choice to take the shootout, but he deferred to Charlie Gonzalez, facing the team he had played for from 2013-21 for the first time. Charlie’s right-footed shot was off the post, but he found the rebound with his Ieft foot and finished it, taking a hard hit from behind as he did so. Charlie got up and tugged his jersey crest to remind Ontario of the team he is playing for now.

“I gotta represent whatever team I’m playing for,” said Gonzalez, who has three goals and three assists in two matches, “It was really physical, tactical, and a lot of hits, but that’s what was expected. You have to be the team that’s the smartest.”

Gonzalez extended the lead with an instinctive play. Receiving a loose ball at pace in the crease, Charlie turned on net but spotted fellow midfielder Brandon Escoto crashing the back post. Gonzalez made the pass and Escoto slammed home his third goal of the year at 9:45, pushing the lead to 5-3.

The Fury went to six attackers with 4:20 remaining, but were unable to find the net, with Cortes making a point-blank stop of Franck Tayou. A blue card to Ontario’s Robert Palmer with 2:06 remaining was cashed in by Morgan, who scored from his own end of the field at 13:51 as the Fury pulled their keeper once again.

San Diego was out-shot by the Fury 30-22, but came up with a season-high 15 blocked shots. Cortes appreciated the support from his newly-met teammates, both on and off the floor.

“From the beginning of the process, coming here and everything, this is the most professional organization in the MASL that I’ve been to. Everyone was friendly, I knew the traditions of winning here, and we came out together as a team and won.”

The victory pushes the Sockers three points ahead of Ontario in the MASL West Division. However, two more contests remain over the next two Sundays, and three more between the sides before the month is out.

Phil Salvagio had a simple message, for the intensity and physicality: “It’s only going to get worse.”

San Diego and Ontario return on the same field for a rematch on Sunday, January 9 at 5pm. The match will feature the return of the Sockers’ Celebrity/Media Halftime Game. Tickets are available by visiting

Sunset Mercantile offers new Last Saturday Live music event series

The Sunset Mercantile and its community partners will host the first in a new series of monthly live music events on Saturday, August 28, outdoors at 37th Avenue and Pacheco Street.

The outdoor community market has long hosted family-friendly events and shopping opportunities that feature local goods, foods, and music. Sunset Mercantile partnered with local print shop Fleet Wood and Kevin North Band to develop a new series of open-air mini-music festivals, as part of its programming that is open to all ages and following COVID-19 safety protocols.

The new series, Last Saturday Live, will feature live music from several local bands and musicians with a variety of sounds.  The lineup for August 28, 2021, includes The HA, led by Brooks Dierker, which offers a blend of beach funk and southern country music; the Kevin North Band, which has a more British blues vibe; and Grupo Tribulation, a classical Peruvian fusion band.  Manos Lindas, Sunset Hill, Mr. Andrew of the band The Under Trio, and young and emerging local artist Gabi will also be performing.

The August 28 event will occur from The HA’s mobile rig, an extremely customized Ford motor home that the band gutted and turned into a moveable stage.

As with all of Sunset Mercantile’s events, several local food pop-ups will also be on site to keep the audience well fed during each Last Saturday Live event.

For the first Saturday, you can have Texas-style smoked barbecue from Smokin D’s, Thai street food from Sowl Bowls, and plant-based meals from De La Paz Remedios.  An origami workshop will be taking place in the mercantile’s Fun Zone, led by hashtagmaid, and vendors will also be selling local goods and crafts.

The Last Saturday Live series is currently slated to be offered again on September 25 and October 30. Admission is free and the music is expected to run from 3 to 7 p.m. at 37th Avenue and Pacheco.  Music may be offered during other Sunset Mercantile events, too, as it has in the past.

The BEST Vegetable Dill Dip Recipe

This post may contain affiliate links. Read our disclosure policy.
With only 6 ingredients, this homemade Vegetable Dill Dip is going to be your favorite dish to serve with fresh vegetables. It’s also delicious served with chips or crackers.

Looking for the perfect dip for raw vegetables? Look no further! This Vegetable Dill Dip is a family favorite!

I am going to be completely honest – I don’t get excited about eating raw vegetables. However, if you serve some dip with those raw vegetables, I can eat a pound of carrots in one sitting!

Some may argue that dip counteracts eating healthy vegetables, but it doesn’t take much of this flavorful dip to go a long way.

I love making this dip when I need a quick side dish for dinner or even a party – it comes together in less than 5 minutes and is made with ingredients that I usually always have on hand.

After you are done mixing this dip together, I highly recommend letting it sit in the fridge for about 30 minutes before eating to let the flavors meld together. It tastes amazing!

This dip will last up to 5 days in the fridge when kept in an air-tight container.

Ingredients needed for Vegetable Dill Dip:

“I have so much time!” -No mom ever

Let us give you your time back. With the Six Sisters’ Meal Plans, we do the dinner planning, grocery ordering, and then all you have to do is decide whether to pick them up or have them delivered.

How to make this dip healthier

If you are looking to lighten up this dip, there are a few substitutions you can make.

Substitute the sour cream for plain Greek yogurt. You will still get all the creaminess you need in this dip and the Greek yogurt adds a great flavor. You could even do 1 1/2 cups of yogurt with a 1/2 cup of mayo.

You could also substitute cottage cheese for the sour cream – it will give it a little bit of a different taste and definitely a different texture, but it’s a delicious change.

I usually use light mayo for this recipe and I don’t notice a difference at all.

If you have it available, fresh dill weed is delicious in this recipe. You will need about 1/4 cup of fresh dill weed in place of the dried dill weed.

Some of our readers have also substituted the mayo for cream cheese and said it turned out so yummy.

What to serve this Dill dip with

We love serving this dip with fresh vegetables (carrot sticks, celery sticks, sliced cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, sliced bell peppers, broccoli, and cauliflower.

This dip is also delicious served with crackers (I love it with Wheat Thins) or potato chips.
