Canelo Alvarez carries ring momentum into Miami Saturday – Communities Digital News

SAN DIEGO, Calif., February 25, 2021 – Canelo Alvarez has weathered the year-long coronavirus pandemic better than nearly anyone in boxing. In the last 12 months, he won his promotional autonomy from Golden Boy Promotions, put on a phenomenal performance against Callum Smith in December, and put a lock on Trainer of the Year honors for Eddy Reynoso.

Anyone with remaining doubts about Alvarez’s status as the best pound-for-pound boxer in the world has some explaining to do.

Alvarez also got the royal treatment in his first promotional partnership with Eddie Hearn and Matchroom Boxing in December. It went well enough to return for Saturday’s main event in Miami at the Hard Rock Stadium. Alvarez (54-1-2, 36 KOs) will fight his mandatory challenger for the WBC Super Middleweight title, Avni Yildirim of Turkey (21-2, 12, KOs). The card airs on DAZN, starting with undercard bouts at 7 pm ET/4 pm PT.

 Yildirim: Climbing Mount Everest

If Callum Smith had a big hill to climb, Avni Yildirim faces Mount Everest with no oxygen. Alvarez is truly at the peak of his skills. At age 30, with the guidance of his long-time trainer Reynoso whose excellence has developed right alongside Alvarez, he’s put it all together. Power, speed, ring generalship, and surprisingly good defensive skills. All of it backed by the confidence of a winner. Most observers aren’t trying to figure out who will win. They’re deciding what round Alvarez will knock Yildirim out.

Yildirim’s resume isn’t a lot to look at. He’s had half the fights of Alvarez. What he does have is nothing to lose, a big stage and big payday. And helping him climb Mount Everest is a confident Sherpa in trainer Joel Diaz. To hear Diaz talk about Yildirim and praise his work ethic and skills, you might buy into the “shock the world” scenario.

Diaz has been working with Yildirim in his native Turkey. They have zero distractions, courtesy of the pandemic. “We’ve been putting in some great work. I believe we can do something with Avni. If not, I wouldn’t be here,” said Diaz.

“He’s hungry, he has a whole country behind him, and he wants to make a legacy of his own being the only Turkish fighter right now at this moment. He’s fighting hard, he’s excited about the opportunity, and he’s taking advantage of it.” Diaz said putting together a fight plan against Alvarez is a challenge, but he’s up for it.

“Saturday is a big night for me and for my country, for all the fans,” said Yildirim. “It’s a big chance for me, a big chance for my country. Everyone is waiting for the WBC belt. Maybe after the world championship title, boxing will get so big in my country.

“He’s a big champion, everyone knows that. I’m ready for the world championship title for the big chance. It’s my time. Saturday, for everyone, it’s showtime.”

Alvarez: ‘I respect all fighters’

Alvarez oozes the grace that comes from confidence and the ability to extend courtesy to his opponents because he respects them, but doesn’t fear any of them.

“I respect all fighters. I respect the challenger that’s in front of me right now,” said Alvarez. “I know he’s a strong fighter. I know he has a lot of tools. I have the same mentality. I’m trying to do my job, and I’m trying to make history.”

While Alvarez isn’t likely to be challenged by Yildirim or many other opponents available, he’s set up a challenge on the calendar. After just one fight in 2020, Alvarez is back less than eight weeks later, and intends to return in May against Britain’s Billy Joe Saunders, then again in September and possibly December.

“I love being here. I love being in the gym. It’s my life. We’re going to take these fights fight-by-fight, and hopefully, I can fight four times this year,” said Alvarez. In today’s boxing universe, this is an ambitious plan fans can appreciate, even if the level of opponent Saturday is lacking. It’s a victory lap for Alvarez. He’s earned it.

Placing the fight in Florida allows up to 15,000 fans to attend in person. With little else on the sporting schedule, Alvarez can generate interest in boxing among Florida fans. His one previous appearance in Miami as an 18-year-old welterweight was a first-round TKO win against Raul Pinzon of Colombia in a club level show in 2008.  But even then, he was already the A-side in the main event.

Today, he’s in a massive venue, being wished well by Pitbull and in full control of his fate, just the way he likes it.

Competitive? No. Entertaining? Yes.

Saul Alvarez demolished undefeated Callum Smith during their WBA, WBC, and Ring Magazine super middleweight championship bout at the Alamodome in San Antonio. Photo: Ed Mulholland, Matchroom Boxing

Once again as with Smith and with Sergey Kovalev before him, Alvarez is fighting a taller man. He knows exactly how to move in and tackle a big target with lots of open real estate in front of him, whipping damaging body shots to demoralize an opponent as much as they hurt him.

Armed with his skills, experience, and brilliant game plans by Reynoso (see Valdez, Oscar), Alvarez believes no one can beat him. Few would argue.

Fans shouldn’t wring their hands over the level of opposition. Relax and enjoy the demonstration. Watch for Alvarez to lay the groundwork, then go for a crushing uppercut or left hook whenever he can find it. The fight won’t go past six rounds.

There’s still time for plenty of tantalizing fights for Alvarez. Who wouldn’t be thrilled to see him take on the likes of Jermall Charlo or Artur Beterbiev? His most dangerous opponent might be the tricky Dmitry Bivol, who’s more than willing to fight at 168 or 175. The Triple G ship may have sailed.

Martinez vs Arroyo canceled on undercard

Heavyweights Zhilei Zhang and Jerry Forrest have been elevated to the co-main event on Saturday. Photo: Melina Pizano, Matchroom Boxing

The best fight on the card was expected to be the co-main event, a 12-round championship bout in the flyweight division between Julio Cesar Martinez of Mexico and McWilliams Arroyo of Puerto Rico, with Martinez’s WBC belt at stake.

Late Thursday following the final pre-fight news conference, Matchroom Boxing announced the cancellation of the fight. Martinez blamed a hand fracture suffered during training that hadn’t healed sufficiently. He said via social media it was aggravated this week. Martinez says his title defense is postponed, not canceled. No new date has been announced.

Heavyweight Zhang Zhilei of China (22-0, 17 KOs) and Jerry Forrest of Virginia (26-4, 20 KOs) are now elevated to the co-main spot. Forrest is coming off a close decision loss to Carlos Takam last July. Zhilei is a 6-foot-6 southpaw and 2008 Olympic silver medalist now training in New Jersey. This pair is fairly well matched in skill level, and it could be a surprise.

“All I want to say is I’m ready to go,” said Zhilei. “I go one step at a time. I never look past him. I’ll see what happens after the fight and we’ll go from there.”

Forrest said he’s worked hard to be ready. “He’s a great fighter. I mean, when you’re talking about Olympic fighters, this man is a good fighter. We had to come up with a game plan. We have a game plan that we plan on sticking to. When you’re fighting top guys like Zhilei Zhang you have to be ready,” said Forrest.

Also on the undercard:

Diego Pacheco vs. Rodolfo Gomez Jr., eight rounds, super middleweights

Alexis Espino vs. Ashton Sykes, six rounds, super middleweights

Payworks Recap: Rockets snap Blazers win streak

The Kelowna Rockets closed out their five-game homestand with a 3-2 win over the Kamloops Blazers on Wednesday night at Prospera Place in Kelowna, BC.

The Blazers entered the game ranked third in the nation on the Kia CHL Top-10 Rankings, riding a seven-game win streak and an 11-1-0-0 record.

The story of the night for the Rockets was their penalty kill, shutting down all three Blazer power-pay opportunities.

New York Rangers prospect Talyn Boyko made his debut for Kelowna following a trade from the Tri-City Americans on Sunday, the 6’7.5″ goaltender stopped 27 of the 29 shots he faced. Centreman Nolan Flamand picked up first star honours after posting a goal and an assist in the win.

Daylan Kuefler (6) put the Blazers on the board first, just 37 seconds into the game. It appeared as though Pavel Novak had tied the game midway through the period after he redirected the puck past Dylan Garand, but the goal was called back due to a high stick. Mark Liwiski (2) made sure it counted with three seconds to go in the first.

Colton Dach (5) extended his point streak to six games with his fifth goal of the season. Josh Pillar (8) tied things up once again early in the second frame.  Nolan Flamand (2) scored the game-winner while on the power play late in the period.

The Rockets powerplay was one-for-two on the night.

Kamloops outshot Kelowna 29-27.

Scott Cousins, Marcus Pacheco and Elias Carmichael were the Rockets scratches.

The Rockets will hit the road to face the Prince George Cougars Friday and Saturday night at the CN Centre in Prince George. You can watch all Rockets games on WHL Live on CHL TV. You can also listen to the game on AM1550.

Nestlé attacks food benefits of Brazilian workers during the pandemic – SWI swissinfo.ch

As the price of food soars in Brazil, many Nestlé employees there are struggling to feed themselves. Keystone / Peter Klaunzer

The Swiss multinational is celebrating 100 years in Brazil but its poorest workers face food voucher cuts amid rising food prices caused by the pandemic.

Rogério Pacheco Jordão in Rio de Janeiro

After a century of doing business in Brazil – Nestlé’s fifth largest market with CHF2.79 billion ($2.94 billion) in sales in 2020 – the Swiss food manufacturer faces the discontent of trade unions in the South American country.

At its chocolate factory in Vila Velha (one of its 31 Brazilian units) in Espírito Santo state in the southeast, the company plans to halve food voucher benefits – from BRL 680 (115 CHF) to BRL 350 (59 CHF) – having already reduced the share of profits passed on to workers. The factory produces Garoto chocolates – a popular brand acquired by Nestlé in 2001 and which made the Swiss food giant a leader in Brazil’s chocolate market at the time.

“That this should happen during the Covid-19 pandemic situation is really outrageous. We will resist and even go on strike, if necessary,” says Linda Morais, the local union president.

The decision to cut food benefits was communicated in January but rejected by the factory’s employees. The announcement came at a time of decent results for Nestlé in Brazil: 2020 sales increased by 5.7% compared to 2019 (in Brazilian Reais), according to the company’s latest annual report.

Countrywide cuts

The cuts at the Vila Velha factory, located in a city of some 500,000 inhabitants, is not an isolated case. Two chocolate and milk product units in Feira de Santana, in the state of Bahia in the northeast of the country, were also affected. Last November, the company reduced profit sharing and halved the food ticket value for more than 600 employees.

“This mainly affects the shop floor worker, who earns less and who makes up the majority of the staff. Concerned about the possibility of dismissals, we had to agree to company’s proposal,” says Eduardo Sodré, director of the Food Workers Union (Sindialimentação), which negotiates with the company in Bahia.

According to him, last year Nestlé dismissed more than 100 employees at Feira de Santana’s plants, in addition to closing down another unit in Itabuna, a city 350km to the south.

“With unemployment on the rise in the country [14% in 2020], the workers felt uncertain. We had no way out,” says Sodré.

Food benefits

In Brazil, food aid, given in the form of tickets that employees can exchange for products in supermarkets, is not mandatory, but it is usually offered by companies as a benefit to their employees. In practice, it supplements a worker’s salary and can be a lifeline for low wage workers.

The loss of food benefits also comes at a harsh time. Brazil faces a worsening Covid-19 pandemic situation, which has already left over 310,000 dead. Many cities, including Vila Velha, where the Garoto chocolate factory stands, have adopted lockdown measures, restricting circulation and closing down businesses such as restaurants and bars. In addition, there is a continuous rise in food prices, which affects low wage workers the most.

For example, the price of rice and beans, which make up the staple diet of most Brazilians, rose 76% and 45% respectively in 2020. This is well above the average national inflation rate, which reached 4.5%. Other essential products, such as meat, cooking oil and sugar, have also risen in recent months. The devaluation of the Brazilian Real, seasonal factors and the rise in food exports in recent years, explain the disparities.

Jobs or benefits

Although Nestlé Brazil is a single company, labour negotiations are carried on regionally with different trade unions. In practice, they happen factory by factory. According to union members, the cutting of food benefits first began in São Paulo, where the company has half of its workforce. In 2019, the company dismissed more than 200 workers there but had to reinstate them after a court order. But in return the unions were forced to accept an agreement that reduced employee benefits, including food vouchers.

“With the country facing a steady rise in unemployment, we had no alternative,” explains Artur Júnior, vice president of the National Confederation of Workers in the Food and Related Industries (CNTA Afins). The entity represents a couple of trade unions that negotiate with the company.

Trade union activity in front of the Garoto plant in Vila Velha Sindialimentação-ES/Food Workers Union-ES

According to Júnior, Nestlé, like many other major companies, is taking advantage of Brazilian labour reform approved by National Congress in 2017. The reform reduced the bargaining power of the unions by expanding the possibility of outsourcing labour, which opens the door for layoffs. The reform, a comprehensive revision of Brazilian labour laws that had existed unchanged for over 70 years, also extinguished the union tax thereby eliminating an important source of funding for trade unions in the country.

“Keeping a labour campaign active is costly. You need to have a reliable car, print pamphlets, and produce content for social media. In the midst of the Covid pandemic, all this gets even more difficult. But we will carry on questioning food benefit cuts as far as we can,” says Morais from Vila Velha’s local trade union.

Better future?

Nestlé’s first factory in Brazil was installed in 1921 in Araras, in the state of São Paulo, to produce condensed milk. Today the company has more than 20,000 employees, with production units in eight Brazilian states and 25 cities. To mark a century of presence in the country the company has launched an advertising campaign with the motto “nurturing a better future”.

But many workers are finding it difficult to put food on the table during the pandemic. Take the case of 32-year-old Ronivaldo de Jesus Almeida, a warehouse assistant at Nestlé’s Vila Velha factory. The food voucher provided by the company corresponds to about a third of the value of his salary, of BRL 1,944.00 (CHF 322).

“I spend the ticket money on basic cleaning products and to supplement the food budget at home. A cut in half of this benefit will mean that I will no longer be able to buy meat, and perhaps not even eggs, which are very expensive at supermarkets right now,” he says.

Like most Brazilian women, Almeida’s wife doesn’t have a steady income and the family also has to support a daughter. Having worked at the Vila Velha plant for a decade, Almeida sees the cut in food benefits as “disrespectful”.

On its website, Nestlé claims that it is doing a lot for its employees and communities in need in response to the Covid pandemic. It specifically makes reference to improving food security.

“We have donated to food banks, food delivery organizations and relief organizations such as the Red Cross and Red Crescent to support people in need,” it states, adding that “Where needed, we are offering free meals and transport for staff to help reduce the risk they fall ill.”

Yet in Brazil the company is prepared to cut food benefits of its own workers. When contacted by SWI swissinfo.ch, Nestlé in Brazil stated, via its press office, that it “does not comment on the content of ongoing negotiations” with its unions and employees.

JUNETEENTH/FATHER’S DAY WEEKEND IN CHICAGO: 8 Murdered, 49 Wounded in America’s Largest Open-Air Range [VIDEO] – The Truth About Guns

father's day juneteenth chicago
Screencap by Boch via Twitter.

This weekend marked both the new federal holiday of Juneteenth as well as Father’s Day. Chicago gang bangers showed their usual reverence for life and the wellbeing of their fellow man by murdering nine and maiming 49 additional souls. That includes a couple who was attacked on camera as they returned from a Puerto Rican People’s Day parade.

HeyJackass as the official numbers of the carnage. The City of Chicago’s sources like to exclude areas of the city where the local constabulary don’t have jurisdiction – such as the Interstates, colleges and other venues. Mayor Lori Lightfoot continues bob and weave to avoid taking responsibility for the dead on her watch by continuing this practice.

And while Lightfoot continues to do nothing substantive to quell the rampant, out-of-control gang violence in her city, she did symbolically declare that racism is a public health crisis in the city, one that’s “literally killing us.” Really.

From CBS Chicago:

Mayor Lori Lightfoot on Thursday declared systemic racism a public health crisis in Chicago, saying disparities in access to effective and affordable health care, the impact of racism on the mental health of people of color, and the subsequent difference in life expectancy “is literally killing us.”

“At almost every point in our city’s history, sadly, racism has taken a devastating toll on the health and well-being of our residents of color, and particularly those who are Black,” Lightfoot said. “Without formally acknowledging this history and reality, and the continuing impact of that infamous legacy, looking at the root causes of today’s challenges, we will never be able to move forward as a city and fully provide our communities with the resources that we need to live happy, vibrant, and fulfilled lives.”

In the end, the final count in terms of real-world violence in Murder City USA lived up to its moniker:

Chicago’s gang culture tallied eight killed and 49 wounded. Here’s a newsflash: not a one of the perps had a Firearms Owner’s ID card or a concealed carry license.

It included a couple ambushed by three black males as they headed home from the Puerto Rican People’s Day Parade in an apparent carjacking attempt.

From the Chicago Sun-Times:

A man was killed, and a woman was critically wounded in a shooting Saturday night in Humboldt Park on the Northwest Side.

About 9:15 p.m., the man and woman, 24 and 25, were in the 3200 block of West Division Street, when they were ambushed by up to three males who fired shots at them, Chicago police said.

The man, Gyovanny Arzuaga, was rushed to Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

The woman was struck in the neck and rushed to Stroger Hospital in critical condition, police said.

A memorial for Arzuaga was erected Sunday just feet from where the 24-year-old father of two was shot dead in Humboldt Park a day earlier.

A black poster board with messages like “Happy Father’s Day” and “RIP Gyo” was taped to a post. Loved ones lit candles and left balloons and bouquets of flowers for Arzuaga, who was with a woman Saturday at Chicago’s annual Puerto Rican People’s Day Parade before they were attacked.

“He was just there to have a good time and go back home,” said his friend, Jae Pacheco, who had planned to meet up with him later in the evening.

Video of the perps shooting the couple went viral on the internet, showing the brutality of some of the most feral members of Chicago’s violent criminal class.
