Island-based Caye Education Foundation (CEF) non-profit organization celebrates its success after its scholarship support program at San Pedro High School yielded this year’s Valedictorian and Salutatorian from the Class of 2021; including seven of the ten students that graduated with honors. The foundation aims to guide and help the students so they could successfully graduate.
The Caye Education Foundation (CEF) first sprang to life in 2017, financially supporting ten students to attend San Pedro High School. The foundation implemented an arduous criteria/vetting process to select the students, who received books; uniforms; tutoring; counseling (when necessary); and a Saturday/Funday outing to Caye Caulker after completing their first year of high school.

These ten students were followed closely with CEF Board Members’ paying attention to each of their mid and end-of-semester grades. If any students fell behind with a grade less than a “B,” a CEF Board Member met with them and their parents/guardians. In most cases, the student fell behind because of failing to submit assignments on time. Once they turned those in, their grades were generally quickly back up to standard. Some students consistently did well, while others needed tutoring and/or counseling. Once assistance was provided, those students were back on track.
With additional funding the next year, the Foundation took on several more students who were already in high school. The next set of students who did not go through the same vetting process as the initial ten were a little more difficult and needed constant supervision.
“Like we all have seen on the island, sometimes students’ home lives are not exactly conducive to attending high school and keeping up with homework and other classroom activities,” commented a CEF Board Member. “Some students needed more attention, while others sailed along smoothly and uneventfully.”
“Semester after semester and year after year, CEF kept a close watch on the students and how they were doing. Most of them required no assistance, but there were always one or two who could use some extra support. However, we often were not aware of that right away, because the students were reluctant/to shy to ask for help. It took some poking and prodding to solicit the admission and, even after providing the indicated support, some of them did not show up for tutoring sessions. But, “The never give up on a kid” mission of the CEF Board Members led to ten students’ successfully graduating with their class of 2021.”
The ten students who walked across the stage and received their diplomas included Marilyn Cuellar, Valedictorian and Ninel Pacheco, Salutatorian of the 2021 graduating class. Five others made Honor Roll and the remaining three graduating students are not to be omitted from the story; they played an important role in the success of the program.

Foundation Seeks Funding to Continue With Program
Now the Foundation is faced with the even more daunting task of finding ways to support the students who would like to pursue post-graduate studies.
“Raising the funds to help these students and their families is another one of those issues that keep us up at night,” commented Robbie Gonzalez, CEF Board Member. “I will continue to hope and pray that there are still individuals out there, despite financial damages incurred by the pandemic, willing to donate (no matter how small the amount) to educate just one more deserving student on the island / in the nation of Belize.”
“We would hate to see our hardworking students’ aspirations end at this point. We simply cannot allow those brilliant minds to waste for lack of a few dollars. We must find the means to continue to ignite their passion for knowledge, spark the pride of their families, and blaze the trail towards a better future for Belize.”

Martinez, CA: The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) and the Contra Costa Transportation Authority (CCTA) are constructing one phase of a multi-phased project to improve safety and help reduce congestion at the I-680/SR-4 Interchange in central Contra Costa County.
The agencies are planning closures to facilitate construction work on SR-4 over Grayson Creek. These closures will impact SR-4 and connector ramps to I-680, spanning Martinez, Pacheco, and Concord. CCTA and Caltrans have scheduled the closures during evening hours in order to minimize impacts to the motoring public.
Work during the closures will include the installation of overhead signs along Highway 4, which will span each direction of the highway. This work is being performed as the current phase of construction nears completion – laying the foundation for future improvements at the heavily-used interchange.
Planned closures include:
Eastbound State Route 4: Tuesday, October 26 beginning at Midnight until 4am on Wednesday October 27, 2021
• Full freeway closure of Eastbound State Route 4 between Pacheco Boulevard and I-680.
• Full ramp closure of Pacheco Boulevard on-ramp to Eastbound State Route 4.
• Full ramp closure of Eastbound State Route 4 connector to Southbound I-680
Wednesday, October 27 beginning at 11pm until 4am on Thursday, October 28, 2021
• Full freeway closure of Westbound State Route 4 between Peralta Road and I-680
• Full ramp closure of Solano Way on-ramp to Westbound State Route 4.
• Full ramp closure of Westbound State Route 4 connector to Northbound I-680.
Motorists are advised to be alert for on-site closure and detour signs, and to Slow for the Cone Zone
Please drive with caution through the detours and leave a safe traveling distance between your vehicle and vehicle ahead of you. Please note that the construction schedule and closure information presented here are subject to change based on weather and other conditions. About the Interstate 680/State Route 4 Interchange Improvement Project
The Interstate 680/State Route 4 Interchange Improvement Project will widen approximately four miles of State Route 4 in both directions between Morello Avenue in Martinez and State Route 242 by adding a third lane in the eastbound and westbound directions to improve on-ramp and off-ramp merging. The project also includes widening of five structures, extending eastbound State Route 4’s carpool lane approximately two miles, installation of safety lighting, and replacement of the Grayson Creek Bridge to bring it up to current State bridge safety codes. This segment of work in this multi-phased project will lay the groundwork for future improvements to connector ramps, improve traffic safety and enhance traffic flow.

A MOTHER in Brazil has been arrested by police after she allegedly sold EIGHT of her ten children in order to get money to buy drugs.
Marilza Medeiros da Conceicao, from Sao Pedro da Aldeia, Rio de Janeiro, was taken into custody on Tuesday for “promising or carrying out the delivery of a child to a third party, upon payment or reward.”

She is being investigated for the sale of up to eight children[/caption]
Local outlet Metropoles suggest that authorities only cottoned onto her horrific dealings after she exchanged her one and a half old daughter last April.
The baby was allegedly given to a family in the Saquarema, Região dos Lagos region for the for the equivalent of just £27.60.
After her arrest, the mother allegedly told authorities that she undertook the swap for for drugs, which authorities described as “narcotics.”
As a result, Police have now opened an investigation into whether the woman could sold her other seven children.
Currently they are only aware of the whereabouts of one, who is living with their father.
Police chief Milton Siqueira Junior said: “The inquiry dates from April of last year. She sold her one-and-a-half-month-old daughter.
“The child was found at the time in Saquarema, Regiao dos Lagos (Lakes Region), and handed over to the Child Services to be taken care of.
“Now, she has 10 more children, but only one was with her, the other is with its father, and we are investigating if she also sold the others.”

42-year-old Elizangela da Silva Pacheco, who allegedly bought the child, is also facing punishment over the trade.
According to the judge, she will now have to carry out community service for six months.
She will also be made to pay three months’ minimum wages to a local charity which helps to educate children.
