Prospect Report: Corbin Carroll Keeps On Hitting

Corbin Carroll, OF, D-backs: Given one of the more aggressive assignments in the minor leagues, Carroll has thrived. The 21-year-old Arizona prospect, who had played in just seven games in full-season ball entering this year, has been electric in his first two series. Carroll had two hits last night, walked twice and stole two bases as well. He’s gotten on base in each of his first six games, has three multi-hit efforts and two home runs. If as many of the Top 100 Prospects graduate this year as seem likely, then Carroll could, as Ludacris might say, be coming for that No. 1 spot.

Grayson Rodriguez, RHP, Orioles: There’s a bolt of electricity headed Baltimore’s way, and it might not be long before it gets there. His name is Grayson, and he’s wasted no time putting the screws to the International League. The game’s top pitching prospect carved the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders on Thursday, striking out eight over five three-hit innings. In his first two starts, Rodriguez has struck out 15 and walked just one, giving hope that he could be helping the Orioles sometime this summer.

Kahlil Watson, SS, Marlins: Years from now, we might need Sherlock Holmes to figure out exactly why Watson slipped all the way to No. 16 in the 2021 draft. For now, we get to watch as the man with the prodigious bat speed lays waste to pitchers around the Florida State League. Watson slammed his fourth home run of the season on Thursday, putting himself in a 12-way (!!!) tie for second place in the minors. If you remove Triple-A players (who got a head start on their season), Watson’s tie is with only four other players.

Felix Valerio, 2B, Brewers: The contact machine from 2021 has kept hitting in 2022. Valerio, who came over from the Mets in the Keon Broxton trade following the 2018 season, slashed .290/.401/.468 between both Class A levels last season. This year, after being bumped to Double-A, he’s started hot. Valerio is 10-for-24 to start the year (including a four-hit effort last night) and already collected three home runs. That last part is particularly notable considering he hit 11 homers in 425 at-bats in 2021.

“Junior” Volkswagen Amarok shelved… again

Volkswagen has once again ruled the possibility of the Tarok bakkie entering production despite having previously hinted it could become a reality by 2024.

The second delay after being axed in 2020, only for an apparent reversal to occur months later, the Tarok had been tipped to enter production at the General Pacheco plant in Argentina, plans that now appear to have been scrapped despite Volkswagen announcing a $250-million investment into the facility this week.

“The Tarok compact pickup is a beautiful project, but today it is impossible to make it in Argentina. (Production of it) is humanly and technically impossible,” motor1.com Brazil quoted Volkswagen’s President for Latin America, Pablo Di Si, as saying at the investment announcement.

In a surprise turnaround, Di Si confirmed that most of the investment will go towards production of the next generation Amarok, though more than likely only for Latin America after it was confirmed in 2020 that production for key markets would be transferred to Ford’s Silverton Plant outside Pretoria.

The unexpected u-turn, also motivated by Volkswagen’s decision to build the Taos at General Pacheco for South America, has seemingly served as the final blow for the Tarok after Di Si confirmed that the São Bernardo do Campo plant in Brazil would build the Polo Track once production of the model it replaces, the Gol, ends next year.

ALSO READ: Volkswagen Tarok becoming a reality but…

In addition, production in North America has been denounced despite interest being shown in a possible rival for the Hyundai Santa Cruz, Ford Maverick and Honda Ridgeline.

“If you look at what Volkswagen did with the Rabbit/Golf, with the Jetta, those segments really drained, it got significantly smaller. Could we bring that back to life with a pick-up/lifestyle vehicle? I think we could and we will look at those opportunities,” Wolfsburg’s North American President and CEO, Scott Keogh, said back in 2020.

Shown in concept form four years ago, the Tarok has long since been billed as the replacement for the ageing Saveiro, with Volkswagen, at the time, branding it as a world vehicle capable of being offered with left-and-right-hand-drive.

Based on the same MQB-A0 platform as the Polo and Nivus/Taigo, the concept utilised motivation from either a flex-fuel version of the 1.4 TSI or a 2.0 TDI, the latter being the biggest hint of exportation outside of Latin America.

Called 80% ready at the time of the concept’s launch, the Tarok has been expected to rival the Fiat Toro/Ram 1000, Maverick, Renault Oroch and Chevrolet’s incoming all-new Montana, though this now appears unlikely given Di Si’s comments.

Prime Picks: UFC Fight Night 205 ‘Lemos vs. Andrade’

The Ultimate Fighting Championship may not be
putting its best foot forward on Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las
Vegas, but the dozen fights on the billing bring some wild betting
lines, from perfect pick’ems to a favorite above -2000. A few of
these tilts may be traps, and much of the value is found not on the
main card but on the prelims. The
UFC Fight Night 205
edition of Prime Picks eyes a play in the
length of the headliner, a pair of fighters who should be more
heavily favored against their inactive opponents and an enormous
underdog who has a far better chance of winning than the line
indicates.

Amanda
Lemos
–Jessica
Andrade
Goes Under 3.5 Rounds ()

Andrade checks into this pairing as a sizeable -220 favorite, one
that is not prohibitive but relatively dry from a value
perspective. Lemos has not faced off against someone who hits as
hard as she does or harder since dropping down 20 pounds to
strawweight, and Andrade will meet her in the middle and let her
hands fly. Both women are hittable, and they both do their best
work in the first round, with 18 stoppages in Round 1 between them.
The lone defeat for “Amandinha” came when Leslie
Smith
stormed her with unending blows until referee Rich
Mitchell
had seen enough. Smith simply overwhelmed her and did
not let Lemos get off anything in response. Andrade can do just
that, but if someone can match her power, it becomes a ballgame.
With finishing abilities firmly held by the two headliners in
spades, an under play at -125 may be more suitable than hoping one
countrywoman overcomes the other.

The ex-strawweight queen Andrade left the division in 2022 after
losing the rematch to current champion Rose
Namajunas
, and a brutal knockout of Katlyn
Chookagian
showed it might have been the right plan. If not for
Valentina
Shevchenko
, Andrade may today be holding the strap. Instead,
“Bullet” beat her at every stage of the game, sending a dejected
Andrade back to the drawing board. Although she crushed Cynthia
Calvillo
in her bounceback fight, “Bate Estaca” had designs on
returning to her stomping grounds at 115 pounds to piledrive some
opponents. Lemos may be taller and larger, but Andrade has never
had an issue taking on someone bigger; she did tap out a woman in
Larissa
Pacheco
who later competed at lightweight, meaning 40 pounds
separate them now.

Lemos sports five
knockdowns
in her last four trips to the cage, and most
recently became the first
fighter in the Octagon
to put the durable Angela Hill
on her seat. The stinging strikes from Lemos get her opponents’
attention early, and they have the ability not just to hurt but to
take others out of their game. Both Montserrat
Ruiz
and Livinha
Souza
almost completely shut down before Lemos put them away,
and Andrade is susceptible to getting cracked if the woman standing
across from her stands her ground. It might end in the first round,
but with the odds where they are now, the under at the fight
concluding before the midpoint of Round 4 is tantalizing. Lemos has
never fought that far before, while Andrade’s lone excursion beyond
the 15-minute mark resulted in a clear-cut loss to a superior
striker in Joanna
Jedrzejczyk
. A finishing sequence could come out of nowhere,
and as long as it occurs before 17:50 in the bout, the prop will
hit.

Dwight
Grant
()

A full six fights into his UFC run, “The Body Snatcher” is still a
bit of an unknown quantity. True to his nickname at times, Grant
may not so much snatch bodies as he does catch them if he lets his
hands go, but that is very much an issue. Four of his last five
appearances have gone to split scorecards, and the Alliance MMA
fighter has gone 2-2 in those outings. Instead of coasting, Grant
does increase his paltry volume as the fight progresses, but the
increase is
relative
, as he may land 10 significant strikes in Round 1 and
elevate it to 15 in the third frame. Accuracy is a huge issue for
the New Yorker, who lands just a third
of his significant strikes attempted
. Despite all of these
flaws, he takes on a fighter in Sergey
Khandozhko
that has not stepped in a cage since late 2019. Ten
strikes in a round are better than zero over the last few years,
and Grant as a pick’em with both in minus territory is not one to
be missed.

Russia’s Khandozhko, even after a long time away from competition,
is still just entering into his athletic prime. He turns 30 in May.
Younger fighters historically see significant improvements as they
move from fight to fight, and even the 33-bout vet can show marked
upgrades with the time he has been off. “Honda” did attempt twice
to take the stage in 2021, but an injury and a COVID-19 diagnosis
squashed those plans. The intangibles largely play against the
Russian, but at the very least, he will not be facing an opponent
who is traditionally a fast starter that can catch him while trying
to get his sea legs beneath him again. Neither man has dazzled with
his in-cage performances, but the size, strength and activity of
Grant should give him the edge, not to mention an ability to get
the fight down to the mat should things go awry.

Marcin
Prachnio
()

It comes as a surprise that Prachnio, who swings into this light
heavyweight contest with as much momentum as he did coming into his
2018 UFC debut, is barely favored while opponent Philipe
Lins
is even money. Lins has not fared well inside the Octagon,
with the fifth iteration of Andrei
Arlovski
outworking him and Tanner
Boser
and his mullet thrashing him. Lins will return to 205
pounds after moving there in search for $1 million with the
Professional Fighters League, and the shift
paid off as he went 4-0 in PFL and claimed the giant check at the
end. As he gets up in age and returns to a division where he will
face younger, faster opponents, it does not bode well for
“Monstro.” Getting Prachnio at anything beneath around -175 to -200
appears a worthwhile endeavor.

Lins never blew up as a heavyweight, a la William
Knight
, coming in around the 230-pound range as a shredded
light heavyweight who simply did not bother cutting weight. This is
a change for him, as it will be his first time cutting down since
taking on Vadim
Nemkov
in 2017, and he will do so at the ripe age of 36. Both
the Brazilian and his Polish counterpart are quite hittable, and
Prachnio has shown faster hands—even if Sam Alvey
punched him out in the former’s promotional debut. No matter if one
is confident in Lins or Prachnio, consider adding Fight Doesn’t Go
the Distance at -210 for a two-option parlay that would clock in at
around +161 for a Prachnio selection and +195 for Lins. With Lins
away for nearly two years while Prachnio has been active, the value
is firmly in favor of the 33-year-old, and a narrow pick of
Prachnio getting the stoppage at +150 is not out of sorts,
either.

Mike
Jackson
()

The UFC unquestionably holds a vested interest in this preliminary
card opener, as it puts boisterous Irish striker Dean Barry
against the man it dragged in to qualify to face Phil
Brooks
. “The Truth” still went on to face “CM Punk,” and he ran
roughshod over the current All Elite Wrestling star over three
embarrassing rounds, only for the victory to be stripped
unceremoniously due to a positive test for marijuana in Chicago.
Like Barry, Jackson has appeared far more comfortable on the feet,
with prior appearances in boxing and kickboxing before turning to
the MMA ranks, and he did prove against Brooks that he can change
levels if need be. Barry undoubtedly wants the fight to remain
upright unless he drops Jackson, and Jackson will welcome an
exchange of fists and feet. While his displayed skill resides
somewhere between “CM Punk” and Mickey
Gall
, Jackson is a live underdog here in this matchup.

Barry may possess four victories under his belt, all four by
knockout, but they do not entirely hold up under scrutiny. Just one
of those opponents came into their meeting with a winning record,
and the combined win-loss tallies for those four totals 15-33,
while a 2-5 sacrificial lamb in Bellator MMA tapped him in 2018. Every victory for the
Irishman has come by first-round knockout, and if one wishes to
throw some scratch on the overwhelming favorite, Barry winning by
stoppage is at -200 while getting his hand raised after a
first-round finish is in plus territory at +135. The question looms
as to what happens when either man takes a flush strike to the
dome, and with this remaining even over Barry’s head, it is
borderline unconscionable that he comes in to his UFC debut as a
-1400 favorite. To compare, the flyweight destroyer of
worlds—Shevchenko—has not eclipsed -1300 in her UFC run, and that
comes in a division where a “puncher’s chance” rarely presents
itself.

WA Ballot Measure to Decriminalize Drugs Has Narrow Poll Lead

As a signature drive kicks off in Washington State to qualify a drug decriminalization measure for November’s ballot, newly released opinion polling from advocates shows the proposal with a slight lead. But nearly one in six voters, the survey suggests, are still on the fence.

Initiative 1922, if passed, would remove Washington’s penalties for drug possession and direct more than $140 million annually in state funds toward expanded outreach, treatment and recovery services for people with substance use disorders. Similar to Oregon’s Measure 110, which voters there passed in 2020, it represents a shift away from the criminal drug war toward a harm reduction model.

Commit to Change WA, an ACLU of Washington–backed coalition of advocates and organizations, has already raised more than $1.5 million to support the would-be initiative, according to the state Public Disclosure Commission. To qualify the measure for November’s ballot, the group needs to gather at least 324,516 valid voter signatures by July 8. It recently posted job listings for staff at six offices across the state.

In a call last week with reporters before the signature-gathering launch, I-1922 proponents said Washington voters broadly recognize that the state’s drug laws—which until last year classified most simple drug possession as a felony—have failed to address problematic drug use while at the same time perpetuating discrimination and racism against Black, Brown and Indigenous communities.

“If I can talk to a, you know, dyed-in-the-wool, old, Eastern Washington sheriff’s deputy, and they look at me and say, ‘Yeah, what we’re doing isn’t working,’ I know we’re ready to address this,” said Everett Maroon, a member of Commit to Change’s steering committee and the executive director of a Walla Walla health care nonprofit.

“Washington voters are eager to embrace a new approach.”

Dave Metz of California-based FM3 Research said the group had conducted about a dozen polls over the past few years to gauge how voters feel about drug policy reform and related issues, “and the data has been very consistent.”

“Washington voters are concerned about substance use disorder in the state, but they believe that the approach that we are currently taking, of criminalizing drug possession, has been a demonstrated failure,” Metz said. “They’re eager to embrace a new approach, one that takes a public health path toward addressing problematic drug use, and this initiative well embodies the values that Washington voters would like to see enacted.”

According to a survey from March of this year, 46 percent of respondents would “definitely” or “probably” vote for the initiative based on its ballot summary, while 37 percent would “definitely” or “probably” vote against it. Another 17 percent answered that they were undecided, with 6 percent leaning yes, 2 percent leaning no, and 9 percent entirely undecided.

Taking into account the leanings, the campaign described the initiative as having “slim majority support” of 53 percent as the signature-gathering drive launches.

The description of the measure used in the survey is taken from the state attorney general’s ballot title for the initiative. Last month the title survived a legal challenge from an opponent who described drug use in the state as “out of control” and claimed the proposal would “legalize” drugs outright.

The proposal would also expunge past convictions for drug possession and use.

While the possession of drugs would not be subject to criminal penalties under I-1922, police could still seize illegal substances they encounter, and most other drug-related charges—including commercial sale and trafficking—would remain prohibited. Rather than charge people caught with drugs, law enforcement would refer them to treatment and other support services.

The proposal would also expunge past convictions for drug possession and use, removing criminal records that can prevent people from finding jobs, securing housing and going to school.

In terms of treatment, I-1922 would route more than $141 million in new annual funding to services. Of that, $115 million would go to the state health care authority to pay for substance use disorder evaluations, prevention, outreach and engagement and recovery support. Another $10 million would pay for “harm reduction services, supplies, and staffing support at local harm reduction organizations.” Other spending would fund public education campaigns, testing drugs for law enforcement and members of the public, law enforcement training and the staffing of a state advisory committee.

Proponents have worked for years to draw attention to what they say is a need for the state to step up outreach and long-term recovery services to treat people with substance use disorders. While Washington funds treatment services better than many other states, they say, outreach and long-term recovery support are lacking, meaning many people who need help are unaware of available resources or can’t find sustained support after leaving treatment programs.

Polling released by the campaign showed high concern among Washingtonians around areas such as homelessness, problematic drug use, housing costs and drug overdoses. But concerns over other issues related to I-1922—including high arrest and incarceration rates as well as police violence against low-income people and people of color—were comparatively low.

The poll also found that 71 percent of respondents believe that “the best way to address drug use is through engagement, healthcare, treatment and recovery services addressing the root causes of addiction,” with 23 percent saying that the best way to handle drug use is to “keep it a crime, letting police take drug addicts off the street.”

Carmen Pacheo-Jones, a Commit to Change steering committee member and founder and executive director of the Health and Justice Recovery Alliance, said on last week’s press call that she spent several years cycling in and out of incarceration before finally being connected with support services.

“At no point did anybody say, ‘Would you like to go to treatment?’” Pacheo-Jones said. “And when I finally did go to treatment, I was able to get clean, restore my relationship with my children, begin working and live a functional life.”

Excellent message from our Steering Committee Member Carmen Pacheco Jones. We need more bridges, and less barriers to recovery! #Yesoni1922 #CommitToChange pic.twitter.com/khfXQZm5ue

Nationally, support has been growing to end criminal penalties for drugs. A poll released last month by the progressive groups Data for Progress and the People’s Action Institute, for example, found that a strong majority of voters, including most Republicans, favor decriminalization. More people also support harm reduction efforts, such access to naloxone—which can reverse opioid overdoses—and overdose prevention sites, where people can more safely use drugs and be connected with treatment and other services.

In Oregon, Measure 110 has already more than halved total drug arrests and created more than $300 million in funding for services—including treatment, harm reduction, peer support and housing and employment assistance—of which at least $31.4 million had been paid to providers as of February.

“It’s time to stop destroying the futures of our young people—especially Black and brown kids—over a small mistake,” Michelle Merriweather, president and CEO of the Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle, said in a press release. “Initiative 1922 will not only provide treatment and recovery services for those who need them most but also reduce racial disparities within the criminal legal system and the lifelong consequences that come with an arrest.”

Commit to Change WA has tried repeatedly in recent years to shift Washington’s approach to drug use from a crime-control paradigm to a public-health model. In 2020, when it was known as Treatment First WA, the group attempted to qualify a separate decriminalization and treatment measure for that year’s state ballot. But the outbreak of COVID-19 interrupted the signature-gathering effort and organizers shifted their focus to the legislature.

After months of delay, state lawmakers last session introduced House Bill 1499, which included many of the group’s suggestions. But the bill failed to advance out of committee before a legislative deadline.

Shortly thereafter, the state Supreme Court overturned Washington’s felony law against drug possession completely, sending lawmakers scrambling to replace the law with little time left in the legislative session. Ultimately they approved a modest reform, reducing the state’s felony charge for drug possession to a misdemeanor and earmarking more money for treatment. But the law’s criminal penalties will expire in 2023, an effort to encourage lawmakers to revisit the policy.

The law, which took effect last May, was widely seen by advocates as a half-step toward meaningful reform. Many called on lawmakers to further invest in outreach and recovery and urged further dismantling of the criminal drug war.

Washington State lawmakers also briefly considered a bill this session that would have legalized what the legislation called “supported psilocybin experiences” for adults 21 and older. That proposal, however, failed to pass out of committee by a deadline earlier this month.

A separate prospective ballot measure aimed at qualifying for November’s ballot would legalize psilocybin, the main active component of psychedelic mushrooms, for use by adults 21 and over in settings with trained facilitators. That proposal, Initiative 1886, is backed by a different group, the political action committee ADAPT-WA, and is similar to the legislation introduced earlier this year. That ballot drive has raised far less financial support than the decrimalization proposal, however—about $10,000, according to state records.

On the local level, Seattle recently became the largest US city to decriminalize psychedelics following a City Council resolution in October.

The #1 Best Vegetable to Prevent Bone Loss, Says Science — Eat This Not That

Your bones are fascinating and always changing. But unfortunately, they do begin to get weaker with age. And what many people don’t realize is that this begins to happen as early as in your 30s, which means that it’s never too early to start caring for your bone health.

Doing things like exercising regularly, eating healthy food, and making sure you get the right nutrients are all things that can help you have stronger bones. For example, because of the calcium and levels of vitamin K, one of the best vegetables you can eat to help prevent or slow bone loss is dark leafy greens.

Learn more about leafy greens and bone health, and for more healthy aging tips, check out The #1 Best Food to Keep Your Bones From Aging.

Which leafy greens are best?

There are many different types of leafy greens out there. Things like kale, spinach, microgreens, collard greens, spinach, cabbage, romaine, and Swiss chard are all considered leafy greens. However, dark leafy greens with calcium are what you want to look for when it comes to healthy bones.

Dark leafy greens with high levels of calcium include kale, broccoli, cabbage, and bok choy. And according to the National Health Society, although spinach is extremely healthy for you, it unfortunately contains oxalates. These can actually negatively impact calcium absorption, so spinach is not a good source of calcium for your bones.

Sign up for our newsletter!

Why is calcium important for your bones?

Your body stores most of its calcium in your teeth and bones, so calcium is vital to keeping your bones healthy and strong. But here’s the truth: by the time you turn 30, your bones are already starting to lose calcium, which over time can lead to the loss of bone mass and things like Osteoporosis.

Not only does age naturally impact your bone strength, but being calcium deficient in general can weaken your bones as well. This is because if you’re not getting enough calcium, your body naturally will pull it from your bones and teeth.

Vitamin K can help as well.

Along with calcium, many leafy greens like kale, cabbage, and broccoli are high in vitamin K as well. This vitamin is most known for maintaining healthy blood clotting, as well as helping to keep your bones strong.

Research has shown that vitamin K can improve bone mineral density and help decrease rates of fracture in people who have Osteoporosis. It’s also been found that vitamin K and D together can have potentially positive effects on your bone health.

So to get a bone health boost during your next meal, try making Pork Chops with a Kale Salad or a Peach Kale Smoothie Bowl.

North Bergen amateur boxers bring home team trophy from Boonton

State of Fitness Boxing Club earned the Top Team trophy on April 29 after a night of sensational fights at Aces Boxing Club in Boonton.

The North Bergen-based gym at 508 73rd Street had five fighters in action, winning two bouts and dropping razor-close decisions in the other three bouts. The gym has previously developed numerous amateur boxers who went on to compete in tournaments such as the Golden Gloves, Diamond Gloves and Battle on the Beach.

“We won some and we lost some but the losses don’t define what this team is capable of,” said State of Fitness Boxing trainer Mike Pacheco. “You’ll be surprised by how far a little heart and courage can take you. I promise you, my team has a lot of heart and courage.”

Josh Vivar and Gianmarco Marin set the tone early, earning their first amateur victories.

Vivar, a 15-year-old student at North Bergen High School, used a stiff jab and sharp counterpunching to outbox Miguel Banegas Lopez to a decision victory in the 130-pound bout. Vivar, who is 1-1 as an amateur, scored a standing-eight count in the second round, rocking his rival with a left hook and right hand along the ropes, before boxing his way to the decision.

Marin, 20, utilized pressure and serious punching power to pummel Nicholas Wilson of Williamsport, Pa. to a second round stoppage win. Marin’s aggression was too much for Wilson to handle, as the 26-year-old repeatedly turned his back to escape the punches. The fight was waived off before the third round, awarding Marin the victory.

Jair Calixto scored a standing eight count in the third round, but it was not enough, and he dropped a decision to the more experienced Israel Alvarado of Steelton, Pa. Calixto, a 16-year-old junior at North Bergen High School, drops to 2-1 as an amateur while the 17-year-old Alvarado is 5-1 in the amateurs.

Tommy Gutierrez of West New York showed great courage in a decision loss to Ahmed Ouedraogo in a matchup of boxers competing in their first amateur fights. The 15-year-old Gutierrez, who worked his way up from State of Fitness Boxing’s kids classes, overcame a bloody nose in the second round and was the aggressor at the final bell.

The unanimous choice for Fight of the Night came in the main event, as State of Fitness’ Emmanuel Martinez went to war with hometown fighter Anthony Chaparro. Both fighters had their moments, but the local crowd quickly adopted Martinez as their favorite, chanting “Manny! Manny!” in a heroic third round which saw Martinez nearly stop his 34-year-old opponent.

In the end, the judges scored the bout for Chaparro in a decision that was met by a chorus of boos. Martinez, a real estate agent from Keyport, was competing in his first amateur bout.

Marin, Calixto and Martinez will all be back in action next Saturday, May 7 when they compete at Kingdom Boxing Gym in Philadelphia.

Prospect Report: McLain, Crow-Armstrong Have Big Nights

Pete Crow-Armstrong, OF, Cubs: It would be an understatement to say the Cubs should be pleased with the early returns from their trade with the Mets. Crow-Armstrong was dealt from New York to Chicago in the move that made Javier Baez a Met. He impressed early in 2021 before requiring shoulder surgery that ended his season. He’s returned healthy in 2022 and has raked from the get-go. He’s gone hitless in just three games this season and has recorded two or more hits in each of the last five games of his current 10-game hitting streak. On Wednesday, Crow-Armstrong went 3-for-6 with his fourth home run of the season in the Pelicans’ 24-6 win over Salem.

Alexander Canario, OF, Cubs: Another Cubs trade piece, another hot start. Canario, who came to Chicago from the Giants in the Kris Bryant trade, led the most recent version of Hot Sheet, and this week has kept right on hitting. He slammed his seventh home run of the season on Wednesday, giving him four straight games with a longball.

Matt McLain, SS, Reds: The story of the 2021 Reds system was dominated by pitchers. Specifically, the Hunter Greene–Nick Lodolo show that swept through Chattanooga and Louisville before breaking onto the main stage this year in Cincinnati. In 2022, at least in the early going, the Reds’ bats are doing the talking. McLain in particular has started particularly strong. The UCLA product added two more home runs on Wednesday, bringing his season total to seven, including four in the last three games. But he wasn’t the only Cincinnati prospect to break out the longball on Wednesday …

Rece Hinds, 3B, Reds: Hinds, of course, is known for his prodigious thump. The Isley Brothers might say: It’s His Thing. Hinds walloped two homers for High-A Dayton in the first game of its doubleheader with Lake County. Big night aside, Hinds has struggled this season. By day’s end, he was hitting .203/.286/.406 with 36 strikeouts against just six walks.
