RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Brazil’s Congress on Monday, February 1st, chose lawmakers endorsed by President Jair Bolsonaro as speakers of its two chambers, giving the far-right leader a base among center-right politicians with whom he had once vowed never to ally.
Senator Rodrigo Pacheco won the two-year term to head the upper chamber by a vote of 57-21. Another new Bolsonaro ally, Arthur Lira of the right-wing Progressive Party, later won the speakership of the lower house by 302 votes against 145 for his nearest rival.
Bolsonaro’s support for Pacheco and Lira underscores . . .

Marvel has teased it for months, we know the stakes involved, all the tie-in titles, variant covers, and other Marvel event extras through September, so now it’s time to finally get AXE: Judgment Day rolling…
… well, before a prelude one-shot that is.
On July 13 Judgment Day begins with AXE.: Eve of Judgment #1, a lead-in one-shot special by the’s event series’ writer Kieron Gillen and artist Pasqual Ferry with a cover by Carlos Pacheco.
And as you can see by the image above and the preview pages below, Marvel doesn’t waste any time setting up the conflict. Druig (currently Eternal Prime despite being an a-hole) wants all mutantkind dead and doesn’t beat around the bush about it.
As the preview shows, Druig even comes up with a means with the help of Domo (who’s an actual Eternal in the comic book and not a huge ship like in the movie), and it looks pretty dead-ass serious to us.
So come for Druig’s genocidal plans. Stay for Tony Stark’s Iron Waffle 3000 … no, that’s not a typo.
But that remains to be seen. For now, check out the first five pages of the conflict before things start to get heavy.

AXE: Judgment Day proper kicks off July 20.
Judgment Day could go down as one of the biggest Marvel events in some time – but how will it rank among our list of the best Marvel stories of all time?

Twelve years after debuting as the brand’s first in-house developed bakkie, Volkswagen, after global sales of 830 000 units, has officially unveiled the all-new, second generation Amarok.
Ending more than three years of speculative reports and recently, a barrage of exterior and interior teaser images, the initiator of the premium segment bakkie outside North America returns to the roots of its predecessor, the European-market only Toyota Hilux-based Taro, by being based on a different vehicle, in this case, the new Ford Ranger.
Volkswagen exterior
The first non-Blue Oval vehicle to make use of the updated T6.2 platform, the others being the Everest, Ranger Raptor, Bronco and Bronco Raptor, the Amarok has been externally redesigned to incorporate a distinct Volkswagen look, as per comments made two years ago by Wolfsburg’s Commercial Vehicles Head of Design, Albert-Johann Kirzinger.
“We are really working hard to have a 100 per cent Volkswagen, a true Volkswagen, and not only a rebadged Ford. I want you to rest assured that this Amarok will be a real beast,” Kirzinger told defunct Australian online publication, caradvice.com.au, at the time.
In a later statement, the executive remarked, “We’ve given the strength and power of the new Amarok an unambiguous expression–with clear Volkswagen DNA, inside and out”.
As indicated by the original teaser sketches in 2020 and then last year, the Amarok adopts a squared-off, less rounded look with a flatter grille seemingly derived from the Touareg.
Rear has been restyled from the Ranger. Aventura pictured
Depending on which one of the five trim levels is selected, the Amarok offers four different grille designs, with the base, life and style getting their own unique look, while an X-shaped motif has been selected for the off-road focused Panamericana and the lifestyle orientated Aventura that replaces the Extreme.
Down the side, the silhouette from the Ranger prevails, but at the rear, the LED light clusters have been restyled, the wheel arches extended a bit more and the tailgate revised with block letter AMAROK badging.
Again depending on the trim level, wheel sizes up to 21-inches will be offered, along with a manual tonneau cover or an automatic roller-shutter similar to the one used on the Ranger and the Toyota Hilux Legend RS.
For the first time, an automatic roller-shutter will be available.
Dimensions
As per its new underpinnings, the Amarok gains dimensionally with its overall length increasing by 96 mm to 5 350 mm, wheelbase by 125 mm to 3 220 mm and height by two millimetres for a total of 1 880 mm.
At 1 910 mm, the Amarok is 34 mm narrower than its predecessor, but retains its 3 500 kg towing capacity.
Depending on the model, payload increases by 350 kg to a maximum of 1 200 kg and wading depth by 300 mm to 800 mm. No mentioning of ground clearance was made.
Cargo management system features inside the loadbin.
Compared to the outgoing model, the new Amarok’s breakover angle is rated 21-degrees versus the previous 21.4-degrees, while the approach angle increases by one degree to 29-degrees. The claimed departure angle now stands at 21-degrees versus the outgoing model’s 23.4-degrees.
Returning for the first time since 2017 is a single cab capable of transporting two Euro pallets, with Volkswagen claiming improved rear head-and-legroom in the double cab. As with the Ranger, a cargo management is incorporated into the loadbin itself with.
Inside
Teased in sketch form in December last year and then in January, followed by two separate glimpses last month, the Amarok’s interior has been tweaked from that of the Ranger in the guise of restyled air vents, a Volkswagen specific steering wheels, physical switchgear and more premium materials.
Off-road focused Panamericana.
An eight-inch digital instrument cluster is standard in most models with a twelve-inch display available as an option.
Kept though are the two infotainment systems; a 10.1-inch display on entry-level models and the twelve-inch setup, both with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and on automatic models, the same block gear lever as the Ranger.
Also offered is a wireless smartphone charger, dual-zone climate control, keyless entry and in the case of the Panamericana, black alloy wheels, a tubular steel roll-bar and black Panamericana decals at the base of the doors.
Unique touches on the Panamericana are evident.
Standard on higher-end models is LED lights, with the Matrix I.Q. LED being optional, along with a Harman Kardon sound system and no less than 20 new safety and driver assistance systems comprising Lane Change Assist, Trailer Assist, Blind Spot Detection, Adaptive Cruise Control, a 180-degree reverse camera, Autonomous Emergency Braking, a surround-view camera system, Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Park Assist to name but a few.
Made at the Blue Oval’s Struandale Engine Plant in Port Elizabeth, now Gqeberha, following last year’s R600-million investment, the 2.0-litre single and bi-turbodiesel Panther mills replace the TDI units of similar displacement and turbo allocation with outputs of 110kW/350Nm and 125kW/405Nm.
The standard transmission is a five-speed manual or in the case of the latter, a six-speed manual with option of a six-speed automatic.
Interior has been subtly revised from that of the Ranger.
The bi-turbo unit meanwhile also comes in two states of tune; 150 kW and 154 kW with torque capped at 500 Nm.
Both are paired as standard to the six-speed manual with the option, on the former, being the mentioned six-speed automatic and the latter, the recalibrated version of the General Motors co-developed ten-speed automatic.
Serving as the replacement for the long-since discontinued 2.0 TSI is the 2.3 EcoBoost petrol that develops 222kW/452Nm, an uptake of 22kW/32Nm on the same unit used in the North American-market Ranger. It will, however, only be available in select markets hooked to the ten-speed ‘box as standard.
New rotary dial four-wheel-drove selector
At the sharp-end of the spectrum, the 3.0-litre V6, which accounted for the majority of Amarok sales since being introduced in 2016, comes in two states of tune; 177 kW and 184 kW with torque for both rated at 600 Nm.
As before, drive is routed to the rear wheels with four-wheel-drive models having a choice of a part-time system with low range, or a permanent setup similar to the outgoing model.
Physical switchgear atop the newly added wireless smartphone charger.
Arriving when?
According to Australia’s carexpert.com, a choice of eight colours will be offered; Clear White, Light Grey Metallic, Bright Beige Metallic, Midnight Black Metallic, Dark Grey Metallic, Bright Blue Metallic, Deep Red Metallic and Mid Blue Metallic.

In this valley east of the Gabilan Mountains, it took less than 80 years for the home of the Mutsun Indians to be transformed into San Benito County, filled with ranches, farms and mines.
While San Juan Bautista was the most important city in the area—really, the only substantial city east of Salinas for most of those 80 years—the founding of Hollister brought about a critical shift in the political and economic center of the area. In fact, it took less than two years for Hollister to go from a dusty ranch to a city and the seat of the newly minted county of San Benito.
And it all began with sheep.
In 1853, brothers Benjamin and Thomas Flint and their friend Lewellyn Bixby left Maine for Ohio, then drove 2,000 sheep from there to the Los Angeles area, going into business as Flint, Bixby & Company.
They would soon join forces with William Welles Hollister, a man with a similar story. Known as “Colonel,” a nickname he inherited from his father, in 1854, Hollister and his brother Joseph and sister Lucy Brown drove 6,000 sheep to Santa Barbara.
Flint, Bixby and Hollister all became rich selling wool and meat. But the men had something in common besides sheep—they all gained and consolidated power by purchasing Mexican land grants around the state, including the 34,620-acre Rancho San Justo, which encircled San Juan Bautista and covered a large part of present-day Hollister.
When Mexico gained California from Spain in 1821, they dissolved the missions and divided up the church lands. Mexico intended for half the property to go to the Mission Indians, with the rest to be used to lure in settlers. Unsurprisingly, the Native people got nothing, and the land mainly went to military officers and friends of the Mexican governor, Juan B. Alvarado.
Alvarado had given Rancho San Justo to Jose Castro, Governor of Baja California, in 1839. Castro sold it to Don Francisco Pérez Pacheco, one of the largest landowners in the state, in 1850. Pacheco Pass and Pacheco State Park are both located on land he once owned.
In 1851, California was now under American control, and Mexican grant owners were forced to prove the legitimacy of their claims. In many cases, it was more expedient for claimants to sell their land rather than fight for it in court, creating a lucrative land market for prospective ranch owners.
Pacheco sold Rancho San Justo to Flint, Bixby and Hollister in 1855, with Hollister putting up half the money for the purchase.
Rancho San Justo was remarkably successful. An article in the California Farmer in 1859 placed the holdings of the ranch at around 20,000 sheep, “all No. 1 and extra quality stock.” The author set the wool production at 100,000 pounds a year with a value at the time of $25,000.
The partnership dissolved in 1861, after a disagreement between the Flints and Hollister. Flint gave Hollister $10,000 in exchange for choosing the half he wanted. They divided the land and sheep evenly, and the Flints took the land located east of the San Benito River, leaving Hollister with the land to the west. Hollister soon became unhappy with the deal, claiming tens of thousands of dollars in losses. The Flints offered to swap parcels and Hollister accepted.
In 1868, Hollister moved back to Santa Barbara, where he still had a ranch. He sold his 20,773 acres to the newly founded San Justo Homestead Association, which then split it into 50 parcels. The lots sold quickly at auction; the first lot sold for $6,500.
They called the town they created “San Justo” at first, until association member Henry Hagen objected, saying “the saints monopolized the name of nearly every place in the state.” He proposed “Hollister” and, over John Hollister’s objections, the name was voted on and accepted.
Once Hollister was formed in 1872, it quickly outstripped San Juan Bautista of its importance to the area. San Juan had been the supply base for the mines, farms and ranchers, but Hollister was closer to a lot of these interests. Many of the merchants who had made San Juan a success were now moving to Hollister and opening businesses there.
An advisory election was held in 1873, and by a 200-vote margin, it was decided that San Juan would no longer be part of Monterey County.
As it happened, city leaders in Salinas privately agreed to throw their support to this move in return for voters in the prospective San Benito County supporting Salinas as the new county seat for Monterey.
After the vote, an editorial in the San Jose Mercury News published on Oct. 4, 1873, made a simple case for the change. “Monterey County contains 9876 square miles of territory, 1584 of which lies east of the Gavilan mountains. These mountains form a natural barrier between two sections, the local interests of which are widely divergent.”
Another explanation is more self-serving. With rich agricultural land, vast ranches and one of the most productive quicksilver mines in the country, there was a strong desire among civic leaders and business interests to keep the riches east of the Gabilans closer to home rather than share it with the rest of Monterey County.
In January 1874, when E. C. Tully’s bill to create San Benito County passed the state Assembly, opposition to the county split increased out of a concern that by creating a new county, the residents of San Benito would escape their share of debts owed by Monterey county.
Following the passage of Tully’s bill, San Benito County held its first election in March 1874 to appoint city leaders. Frank Rose became sheriff, M. C. Briggs became district attorney, H. M. Hayes became county clerk, and Thomas McMahon became treasurer.
San Juan Bautista, which just 10 years earlier had been proposed as the seat of Monterey County, was left behind, becoming a ghost town as Hollister, by an overwhelming majority vote, was declared the seat of San Benito County, guaranteeing the growth it has seen ever since.
