While summer in Rhode Island tends to be a time of beaches and clambakes, there is still plenty of art to be seen in locations across the state. Whether interested in the talents of emerging and local artists, museum-quality exhibitions of art historical significance, or bold works of public art, viewers have plenty to choose from. In July, there are four opportunities to experience art that are not to be missed. Each of these art excursions provide both locals and vacationers with ample opportunity to get creative as summer comes into full swing.
Through July 23, Wakefieldâs Hera Gallery is hosting a compelling group exhibition drawn from its roster of talented member artists. The show includes works by Molly Kaderka, Elizabeth Lind, Michelle Henning, and Viera Levitt. These four skilled artists offer up distinct takes on contemporary issues and their work is being showcased in the context of one of the nationâs oldest womenâs cooperative galleries.

Throughout the show, the gallery will host special programs on Thursday evenings, each starting at 7pm. On June 30, there will be a Meet the Artist Night, on July 7, visitors can âStitch and Bitchâ with Viera Levitt, on July 14 Molly Kaderka will host Make and Take paper Marbling, and on July 21 there will be a stone carving demonstration with Elizabeth Lind.
Hera Gallery is located at 10 High Street in Wakefield. Its regular hours are Wednesday through Friday 1-5 pm and Saturday 10 am – 4 pm. Admission is free. Full details can be found at www.heragallery.org.
From July 2 – 31, DeBlois Gallery, a longstanding cooperative space in Middletown, will host a ten-person exhibition titled “Between the Sea Foam and Over the Sand”. With its title borrowed from a Simon and Garfunkel ballad, the exhibition promises to celebrate everything Ocean State, all within walking distance of the beach. The wide-ranging exhibition will offer works in a variety of media by local talents. Featured artists include Shawndavid Berry, Ellen Blomgren, Laura White Carpenter, Izabella Casselman, Juliette Casselman, Frank Fishburne, Karen Nash, Suzie Pacheco, Virginia Fishburne Stone, and Joyce Zipperer. From two-dimensional paintings to three-dimensional ceramics and sculptures, this show will offer art for many tastes.
DeBlois Gallery is located at 134 Aquidneck Avenue in Middletown. Gallery hours are Wednesday through Sunday from 1-5 pm each day. Admission is free. Full details can be found at www.debloisgallery.com.
Beginning July 16, the Newport Art Museum will host an exciting Georgia OâKeeffe exhibition. The show, which will run through October 16, 2022 is not the first time OâKeeffeâs work has come to Newport. During the artistâs lifetime, she showed work at the museum in 1938. With drawings, watercolors, and oils on view by one of the preeminent artists of the twentieth century, this show promises to be one of the best of the summer. When visiting the Newport Art Museum, art-lovers can also partake of a handful of commercial galleries located nearby, enhancing the experience of art history with views into contemporary making.
The Newport Art Museum is located at 76 Bellevue Avenue in Newport. Current hours are Tuesday through Friday from 10 am – 5pm each day, Saturday from 10am – 3 pm, and Sunday from 12-5pm. Regular admission is $15 for adults. Full details on visiting can be found at www.newportartmuseum.org.
For those who find it tricky to make it to a museum or gallery in between other summer activities, public art provides an inspiring outlet twenty-four hours a day. The public artworks managed by The Avenue Concept are widely accessible on walls and sidewalks throughout Providence and beyond. When out and about this summer, they provide an artful accompaniment to seasonal activities in the city. For those spending a sunny afternoon around the popular Michael Van Leeston Pedestrian Bridge, several Avenue Concept works occupy sites nearby.

Artist Lena Mac has recently completed a bold and symbol-filled new mural on the facade of Tiny Bar in the Jewelry District. Kendel Josephâs âOde to the Artist in Spray Paintâ is a series of compelling artist portraits at 35 Weybosset Street. Older, but no less exciting artworks in the neighborhood include Andrew Hemâs âMisty Blueâ, an enormous figurative work from 2017, and perhaps Avenue Conceptâs most well-known commission, Gaiaâs âStill Hereâ, which faces the river and can be enjoyed from popular WaterFire vantage points.
Full details on all of The Avenue Conceptâs projects as well as fun interactive maps of their projects dotted throughout the city can be found on the groupâs website at www.theavenueconcept.org.
With so much to see in venues across the state, there is no excuse for excluding art from a summer itinerary. In July alone, these four art opportunities show off Rhode Islandâs creative excellence.
Michael Rose is a multi-talented fine art professional based in Southern New England. Since 2014 he has served as the gallery manager at the historic Providence Art Club, one of the nationâs oldest arts organizations.

From Nancy Stohlman:
Wow! The Spanish retreat was an incredible experience. The combination of novelty, space, time, and total immersion with other creatives, spending a week with your tribe, pushed and encouraged, detoxing from the usual distractions to enter that space of raw creativity is both deeply healing and deeply inspiring. On a retreat we remember that everything is a story waiting to happen.

We had a wide range of amazing writersâfrom published to unpublished, brand new to flash all the way to flash veterans; we had a pair of friends reuniting from two different countries, a pair of sisters reconnecting in the yurts, and people representing California, Baltimore, Texas, New York City, Portugal, France, Spain, Qatar, and of course Denver, doubly represented (by Nancy and Kathy).

There was a group hammock, fiery sunsets, and (multiple!) spontaneous performances of the Grease soundtrack. There were massages and hikes in the Sierra Nevada mountains. And there were surprises of course, part of any good adventure. From the exploding chairs to the nudist beach to the historic heat wave that swept Europe during our retreat (!), all that material filtered through our bodies and onto the page. We risked both vulnerability and connection and we bonded and played and ate and wroteâa lot.

And we were fedâoh yes. The food was as beautiful as it was delicious and all vegetarian. We were so inspired that we wrote a group poem (and sang a song!) to the many cooks and kitchen angels who spoiled us all week.

We were the first group of writers to visit House of Light, and they learned as much about us as we did about themâincluding the copious amounts of coffee and wine consumed (sangria happened!)âand we were delighted that the owners joined us for our final night reading.

We reconnected with our writing and remembered that inspiration often comes at the crossroads between novelty and play. If we are too comfortable, or too serious, the words get stuck. After a week in Spain the words, ideas, and friendships are flowing!
Iâm so grateful to my co-facilitator, Kathy, and to each one of the amazing writers who said yes to an Andalusian adventure. I raise my pen to all of you!

From Kathy Fish:
The House of Light in Ărgiva was a unique, magical space for us to gather. We were fed meals almost too beautiful to eat, we woke to birdsong, and ended our days with late sunsets bathing the hills in gold. Our group quickly gelled and became friends and encouraging cohorts. I found myself inspired by their energy and enthusiasm and all the beautiful stories they created, and cheered by the conversation and laughter at mealtimes and around the pool. The highlight for me was (as always) our salon night. The resident cats and dogs came around, too, as if theyâd been invited or they were just curious about what us humans were up to. The readings that final night were superb. All in all, this retreat was an amazing experience I wonât soon forget. Thanks to everyone who took part.

from Cheryl J. Fish:
From Cherylâs blog: âThinking about the flash fiction workshop I just experienced feels like a re-birth. So much of what I know about story was reinforced, and yet thereâs much more to realize and expand into. In flash you donât explain. Inunendo rules in fiction that comes in under 1,000 words. Itâs an opportunity to prove less is more. After twice-a-day workshops and prompts with Kathy Fish and Nancy Stohlman, and a wonderful group of writers from all over the place, I am ready to up my game in the micro and flash fiction worlds.â

From Philippa Bowe:
The Andalusian retreat with Nancy and Kathy was a delight from beginning to end. Workshops were enriching, enlightening, fun, creative, productive. Add in fabulous food, sunshine and company and you have an experience that, as a writer, is pretty near heaven on earth.

From Pedro Ponce:
You will leave this retreat well-fed, rested, and, most importantly, inspired! Thank you Nancy and Kathy!

From Marina Pacheco:
I learned a great deal at the retreat. Nancy and Kathy were fantastic tutors who took me on a journey of discovery that resulted in handfuls of new flash writing for me.

From Dorothy Rice:
What a wonderful group you brought together! I had such a great time and I feel really good about the writing I accomplished as well. The stories I wrote are so different from what I usually do, and there was something very freeing in that.
